Another fine review Captain! I've been looking forward to your 2018 Speedmaster ditty for a while, lovely looking bike, with exceptional attention to detail as welll as showing a healthy respect for Triumphs history. Last year I started thinking about changing the kind of bike I ride to a cruiser, immediately I disregarded HD, I looked very closely at the Indian scout, loved the look of it but when I tried one I wasn't greatly impressed with its overall performance, then the first photos of the new Speedmaster came out and the Indian was immediately disregarded. Since then the hooligan in me has had a quiet word about cruisers, so I've had a rethink and decided to stick with the type of bikes I've enjoyed for the past 40 years, maybe think again when I'm 70! 😉 Always enjoy your channel, when I can't get out on my bike for whatever the reason I find watching some of your vids is a great substitute, keep up the great work, kind regards, TBH!

I just bought mine, and it should be shipped to me by the weekend. I’m 6’1” with about the same inseam, and I actually like the “T-Rex” bars because they allow me to be perfectly upright as opposed to slightly leaned forward. I also ordered the comfort seat, because I tend to ride for 3-4 hours at a time. I do love the looks of the Thruxton, but since (as my wife tells me) this will be my LAST bike, I thought I’d go with something a bit more relaxed. Anyway, I love your reviews; this one convinced me in part to get the Speedmaster. TBH!

Hey there Captain! So glad you were able to do a review on this new Speedmaster. I just purchased mine, and haven’t had much chance to throw it around yet. What are your thoughts about putting tank pads on for the knees? I’m afraid that I’m going to scratch the paint up on the tank. I’ve got the black Vance & Hines pipes on order, as well as black wheels and the brown stitched seat. It’s going to look sweet! Took a tumble off my T-100 and was a total loss, so this is my replacement for that. Very happy to see you back in fine form Sir! TBH , and Cheers Mate!👍

I love your review of the Speedmaster and watched it many times after 29/6/18 when I got knocked off my Kawasaki Versys 1000 and broke my foot in 5 places and swore I would never ride again. Anyway there was a competition to win a Triumph modern classic here in Australia if you took a test ride which I did but I did not win. My question is I have watched some reviews where it is mentioned that the clutch felt like it was slipping. Did you experience anything like that or do you think that was the traction control kicking in? I love the Speedmaster
@CaptainRambunctious6 жыл бұрын
Good evening Tim! Glad you're still here and it was just your foot! I had a really good time on the speedmaster and if you watch my other video of the 3 of us riding 3 different bikes, one of which was the speedmaster, we didn't suffer from anything like it... One can only assume that its the traction control or there are a few out there with faults... It does have a slip assist clutch which makes it incredibly light, so maybe that was the issue? Here's the link to the other video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZqexgKttmZKNedk Enjoy and thank you for the question... Hopefully I have allayed any fears and 'heel' well! ;-) Sorry, couldn't resist... @@CaptainRambunctious I took one out earlier today. Really don't like the standard bars if I'm honest. Braking system is questionable too. Not much torque in relation to a Harley sportster 48,but I did add on a bigger breather with V&H pipes plus tuned with a fpk3 on the Harley. @CaptainRambunctious6 жыл бұрын
The speedmaster is a lot more comfortable, but won't be as comfortable as the thruxton above 70mph because you are sitting upright and not canted forwards like you are on the Thruxton. If your hands are going numb, try not to grip so tight and relax your forearms... It could be as easy as that? Otherwise it could be pressure points in your shoulders due to the position but try relaxing your hands, wrists and upper body more, maybe move around more? This could all help! Good luck and I hope that I've been at least a little useful... TBH!

Speedmaster.
@samimani84536 жыл бұрын
BUT WHY CAPTAIN!? I'm literally about to buy one of them and lost I feel the storm is of more substance. But the styling of the speedmaster....something else. Do you think it'll stand the test if time / age well ?
@CaptainRambunctious6 жыл бұрын
Many reasons, quite a few of them practical. And yes, it's a classic design, which has lasted 50 years, so why not longer? It is lighter and smaller than the storm but with similar, if not better, performance. Easier to ride. Better finish to the parts. Cheaper to run and insure. Major services are every 20,000 miles, not 12,000 miles. Less oil. Less petrol. Cheaper to insure. Easier to ride. More electronic toys but also electronic safety too. Better brakes. Better electrics. Better lights. It will be able to have the same panniers as the storm and therefore carry the same amount of luggage. The pillion seat is similar, so that isn't better. The only thing which is better in my book that the storm has that the speedmaster doesn't, is the belt drive. Inlaid with tungsten, it is warranted up to 100,000 miles. 100,000 miles of maintenance free drive. You can't say the same for a chain. However, the belt can squeak sometimes when it gets slightly out of line before popping back in line again... The speedmaster may have a smaller tank, but the fuel consumption should be a lot better, and so they have a similar range as well... That's why I would buy the speedmaster over the storm, but if you are set on the storm, I really did enjoy owning one, I just didn't like the wide tank or the abuse it gave my body when I felt compelled to pin it everywhere and throw my body around to counter the weight of the bike to get good cornering performance... Choose well, but most importantly of all, choose for yourself.

The million pound question, you had the Storm and have ridden the Rocket Roadster. I own a Roadster, which do you prefer between the three and would you have chosen this over the Storm or Roadster and if possible, why? Thx.
@CaptainRambunctious6 жыл бұрын
I would have chosen this. It has plenty of oomph, maybe not quite as addictive as the other two, but the riding position is nicer than on the storm.. Also, as your legs aren't splayed out so far as on the other two bikes, it is also more comfortable to ride, especially at higher speeds and it is easily much better handling... The power of the rocket is exceedingly addictive but for practicality, handling, insurance and fuel consumption, and fun, this would have to be the one bike I would have out of the 3 you mention... Otheriwise, all 3? ;-)

Love the review as always,could you please tell me if the ride is much softer on bumpy roads on the Thunderbird or the Bonneville Speedmaster and is the Thunderbird really any quicker?
@CaptainRambunctious6 жыл бұрын
Hi Tim, thanks for the question. Sorry for not replying sooner. The speedmaster is better on the bumps for the back, and although maybe not QUITE the same punch off the mark, very similar acceleration, better gearing, 6 gears instead of 5 and much better at cornering... A much better bike. And I prefer not having my knees splayed apart like on the thunderbird. Hope this helps!

I very much enjoyed you braving the elements, you deserve a medal for that gallant effort. You made me feel cold just watching it. Despite owning a Speed Triple R I do love the look of this bike. Like you I wouldn't spec those handlebars either, I would have to have the straight ones.

Are Brits simply used to such rain and cold, or is there some trick to keeping your leather gear from soaking up all that water and thus freezing the average Captain? I have found no waterproofing magic in my riding years; your hands looked like they were very exposed to wetness and coldness during this video.
@CaptainRambunctious5 жыл бұрын
We are simply used to it... I do have some waterproof leathers that work very well, and I really should have been wearing my waterproof gloves but for my art (Ha!) I was wearing my union jack gloves which are summer gloves! - I'm an idiot most of the time after all! Otherwise I'm just a little foolhardy about the weather!

I've been holding off test riding this, it's entirely too tempting to get as a lane splitter for my commute. Not thrilled with the aluminum pitting issues, it's been how many years and they still don't know what clear-coat or anodizing is for? Hmm, Speedmaster Black sounds especially tasty, perhaps I should wait 6 months...? PS: Are you sure you're not related to Captain Noah?
@CaptainRambunctious6 жыл бұрын
You can get black engine cases on order if you like... The clear coat is worse apparently as it lets moisture seep in... Thats why they keep them bare... Others have had no issues as they clean their bikes more often and look after them better than maybe I do! ;-) Don't think we're related! :-) It's 'probably' going to be my next bike when my knee finally gives up... I say 'probably' because I don't know how long that will be and that I still love my Thruxton so much! :-)
@MakoVette6 жыл бұрын
I've parsed through the parts catalog and came to the conclusion it would be cheaper to order up a Bobber Black then bolt on the bigger Speedmaster fuel tank and other bits than to pay for the black bits that are on the Bobber Black from the factory. Would relocating the pegs on the Thruxton be of any help I wonder? Regret hearing in the video and in your comment above that you've a bum knee :( I'd blame gravity and that devilish turn 4 at Silverstone, but whatever caused it, I hope it doesn't decide to share with your "good" knee. I reckon few of us are 21 any more, but if you've an interest in being part Bionic Captain Rambunctious, knee joints can be replaced. A rider pal of mine just had her right knee replaced, and she's now on the mend. I expect she'll be on her bike again later this summer. So far all my wobbly bits, including the one in my helmet, are doing okay. Touch wood...

I find this version of the Speed Master at least interesting vs it's precedessor. Not my cup of tea but I can see why others might be wanting one. Fair evaluation as usual but I would rather see you review bikes that give the buzz and tingle. Your an "A" team reviewer/commentator and you need "A" team material to review. I don't mean this as a criticism but as a request.

Thanks Jerry, well the next review should be the Speed Triple RS... I'm not sure I'll be able to hang on to that! ;-)

What does "tally bally ho" mean? I understand tally ho and tally wacker. HA HA HAAH!!! Also cpt rambunctious you need to upgrade your camera and Mic setup for motovloging your audio quality is rubbish..check out "cyclecruza" youtube channel for intructional on how to improve your rig. His audio and video quality is top notch. He can point you in the right direction

Thank you for the advice. At the moment I haven't got the funds for improving my equipment as family takes precedent but will definitely look into this so thanks for that! I got Tally Bally Ho from a character in the British Comedy Blackadder where instead of saying Tally Ho (as in let's go), he adds the word Bally which is old fashioned for bloody. As in instead of saying bloody hell, they would say bally hell to be a bit more polite. So I got it from there... Just adding an archaic swear word to let's go! Just a bit of fun... Hope that clears that up! :-) Essentially trying to make it more British... Thanks again, I'll take you up on that advice when I can... Thanks for watching!

Captain Rambunctious, I'll be admitted to the VA Hospital soon, for Lung Surgery. A "CAT-SCAN" found a QUESTIONABLE SPOT, in my Lungs. The SURGERY is going to take 3hrs. I'll be "INPATIENT" for 5 days. I've been texting with a French M/Cist who rides a Ducati. He works on an "OIL PLATFORM" in The North Sea. His name is Wim Koorn. I'm going to tell WIM, ABOUT YOU, RIGHT NOW. JS
