Really enjoyed the bike and ride. Havent had a bike in about 40 years, thought I wanted a Harley but these Triumps just...call me. Either this or the bobber black....an uncle had a Daytona 500 when I was a boy, I guess thata why they call me. Thanks again, much respect from Texas.

The bobber is a slightly more leaning forward position and looks awesome, the speedmaster is more comfortable for longer journeys though.
@madvar

Had my Speedmaster 8 months, really enjoying it too. Mods i’d recommend are: Dart Classic screen instead of the Triumph screen if you’re thinking of taking it for long trips on the motorway. For 6’ tall rider, the Triumph screen takes the wind just to the top of your head and for me caused a lot of buffering at 60+ mph - made me feel ill. Dart works well to keep enough wind off your body that you’re not holding on for dear life... and i wear an open face year round so appreciate small mercies. I took off my Vance and Hines and got some British-made Trident exhausts, which with the baffles removed makes the bike sound good and certainly lets car drivers know you’re coming through. I too opted for the panniers, and although a bit small, with no rear passenger there’s plenty of room for a bag on top of the seat replacement plate. I got rid of the big indicators for some Triumph small LEDs (used on the Thruxton i think). I also opted for the mid range controls which are still ok for cornering and make low speeds very easy. Oh, and I swapped the standard mirrors for some Triumph ovals, which look a bit better and work well (no vibration). I’d say the only small gripe I have is the clock, which should be metal and better designed, but all in all i’m loving the bike and glad i swapped it for the Bobber Black which although alot of fun, let me down with fuel capacity, comfort and the pillion option.

@fozbox 4 жыл бұрын
Yea I had to put an extender on the top of my triumph screen because my head was being knocked around so much! Thanks for sharing your list of upgrades, sounds like a gorgeous bike. I'll have to look up the Trident exhaust options. Not surprised you exchanged the Bobber Black - very cool for urban riding but not practical. Great thing about the Speedmaster is you can adapt it to look like a bobber and keep the practicality for when you need it.

I love my 2018 black Speedmaster. Only major changes I needed were a foot control swap with a bobber set, and a handlebar and mirror swap from an older T100. The stock bars were a chore at speeds over 70mph. Since I am on the crazy LA/Southern California freeways quite a lot. I find 6th gear very useful at 80+ mph and I have a dart classic screen too., along with xpipe and British Custom Sleeper Pros exhaust. Darn near as perfect a bike as can be now. I sold my Haley FXR and a Victory Judge. Thanks for your review and glad you beat the covid!

British Customs do seem the after market pipes of choice. Though just doing the X-pipe is less obvious in look with a good sound change.

About the mirrors, wouldn't it make sense to have spot mirrors on the handlebars, not on the end of the bars, just somewhere where they are not hanging out like antenna? Usually all I need to know is if somebody is in the lane next to me as long as I can see somewhat back a way, and I think an appropriate size spot mirror can do that, and it wouldn't have to be out in the wind like that either.
@fozbox

They were the bit that I was most unsure about when I first bought the bike. They’re so much more obvious and obtrusive than the ones I had on my Kawasaki but I’m actually now pretty used to them. Trying to get the reverse angle round the body is why they’re so stuck out. You can spec the teardrop shape ones which aesthetically works slightly better.

@@fozbox I rode the bike around town on Rain Mode and it made a definite difference, from seat of pants I think it cured the bike by around 75% of the snatchiness,the clutch adjustment was good as was the chain adjustment...a few days later I fitted the booster plug and rode the same roads around town,once again there was improvement,I still had a small amount of the snatchines,but there was a 90 to 95% improvement,the bike although performed well, it still (to me) felt a bit on the lean side prior to the booster plug,I have also noticed a hell of a lot less popping on decel,that to me says it was lean.. the booster plug has not delivered neck snapping fire breathing performance but it has improved the bike,it is a lot smoother on acceleration around town and to me no longer feels as if it is running on the lean side :/

Had mine for 2 and half years now and pretty happy about her. I put comfort rider and pillion seats, backrest, Dart Classic screen and mid controls (which I highly recommend for an increased maneouvrability and lean angle, although kinda expensive). Personally I don't really find the comfort seat to be all that comfortable and after riding for about an hour my coccyx is sore, although this varies depending on the trousers I'm wearing. Mid controls help to alleviate this issue actually as you can use legs to a much greater extent. I wouldn't, though, recommend putting all your weight on the pegs as the mounting plates and brackets are aluminium and don't inspire much confidence in terms of strength (I might be wrong here). I can confirm the headlight requiring some adjustments, mine was shooting straight into the sky and was of no use to actually illuminate the road. Could depend on how much care the dealership put into bike preparation though.
@fozbox
@fozbox 4 жыл бұрын
Yea, great choices for the updates - I wouldn't go midrange controls myself as I have long legs anyway so actually the forward controls aren't that forward! The headlight is definitely a recurring issue - I think those who only ride in daylight probably have never noticed or thought to check.

Lovely video... I think my brown quilted seat is much more comfortable than the standard! :-) My wife manages a couple of hours on the brown quilted pillion pad but yes, wouldn't like to tour using it. At 6'3", I thought that you'd be more cramped with the beach bars. I'm 6'1" and got the straight bobber black bars... I got the denali horn as well... My left exhaust silencer keeps coming out of the cat box. I think that the bolt keeps getting vibed out... I happily do 130 miles a tank... That's hooning from standstill and overtakes but chilling at about 80mph... I managed another 25 miles after the range went to 0... 1st gear up to 50 2nd gear up tp 70 3rd gear up to 90 etc etc... 4th takes you further of course... According to Stuart Fillingham, it's mostly the T120s and standard bobber... So far I haven't heard of any other issues with speedmaster, speed twin or thruxton... Do you find that you have to press the cruise control button another go sometimes... I forgot I had modes until it was hoofing it down in Wales in September! :-) Otherwise I don't use it... Being a ponce I got the black and white with the coachline but they don't do that as an option anymore? I also got the engine cases black from point of sale because I had issues with the brushed aluminium engine cases corroding on my Thruxton 1200R Anyway, thank you, a very nice, comprehensive update. I'm going to be doing a luggage review during lockdown... What do you use? Tally Bally Ho!
@fozbox
@fozbox 4 жыл бұрын
I thought I'd be more cramped too but it seems to work - I want to get hold of a comfort seat from somewhere and test that again. No exhaust problems yet but I think the bolts in generally do get quite a lot of vibes...think that's where my brake pedal went! The cruise control needs two presses if it's the first time you've used it that ride - first one sort of wakes it up and the second engages it, as long as you're going over about 30mph. As for luggage I've got the stock panniers and an old Kawasaki tail bag from from my Vulcan. I need a new one though so would be interested in what you come up with there...I thought this might be an option www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/motorcycle_parts/content_prod/438928

Thanks for the video. I’ve recently purchased a Speedmaster so I’ve been looking into the gearbox issue myself. It seems to primarily affect the T120 and doesn’t seem to be very common, though exact numbers aren’t available. From what I’ve found, it’s not a gearbox issue per se, but rather a gear *selector* issue in which an important component can get worn down in such a way that it can’t catch properly and fails to shift (usually down). The gearbox itself is fine though. This can manifest in the T120 because of how the shifter peg is mounted directly to the shifter mechanism. The Speedmaster’s forward controls are connected differently, however, which means the issue should manifest less frequently (if at all?) To be honest, I couldn’t find *any* reports on this issue with Speedmasters, only for T120s. Component quality may be at play here too, it’s really all quite vague. Triumph are tight-lipped on it, but apparently they do frequently cover repair costs if/when this pops up.
@fozbox
@fozbox 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that. You’re right about it being more of a T120 issue. Somewhere there is a list of the VIM numbers of which bikes are effected so if I find it I’ll put a link on the video.

I can ride my America all day long on the stock seat and I love the 300 km plus range before the fuel light comes on. If Triumph increased the tank size and made a better seat for the Speedmaster it would more of a draw. Maybe the fuel efficiency of the Speedy gives you a similar range? Great review thanks. I'm picking my new speedmaster up on Friday and one of the first things I want to do is remove the nasty stickers from the tank. I looks like you have removed yours, was it simply a heat gun job or did you have to be more aggressive?

Wow, you have had some dealer prep issues I'd say . The handlebar issue almost brought a giggle, thinking three stooges or in your case, Laural and Hardy. Not up on too much Brit slapstick. Cruise control sounds cool. Mine on my old CB 750 was a handlebar mounted throttle lock. Hey, it worked. Never had a motorcycle with the bicycle seat looking seat. Is that comfortable shifting and braking? Standard bike seats are so wide, u get used to that and switch to a big bicycle seat, just wondering. I have a t100, so the 1200 does have a bigger speed range I know. I used to have a Yamaha VMAX, with a 1200, and I know the difference is nice. I'm debating on a 1200 Bonnie trade but at 68, don't know if it's a smart move. The 900 seems enough. Take care my friend.

@@fozbox Id say that s fine, after 90 minutes riding, I'm ready for a break anyway, ha. Also after about 90 minutes, its about time for a fuel stop anyway,,, depending on bike. May as well make the stop count. The handle bars are definitely old cruiser. We used to have beach bicycles and those bars were the same contour. Thanks again.

Great real world review. I've had my speedy nearly 2 years now and am still infatuated by her. Reading the comments, I see you are considering an x-pipe. Do it! The V&H option pipes do not improve the looks, sound or performance of the bike enough to warrant their cost. I have yet to find an aftermarket set of pipes that please me aesthetically. The x-pipe however, is an "invisible" upgrade and leaves the standard cans in place, which in my opinion is a good thing, as they suit the bike well. The sound rises to a very pleasant level without being obnoxious or irksome on long motorway rides. Bonus feature, there is a slight performance gain, not massive, but pleasingly noticeable. I'm interested to see what you do about the mirrors as its one area I'm looking to improve. Look forward to seeing more content in the future, take care.
@fozbox
@fozbox 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you. The best aftermarket pipes I've come across are British Customs but I really like the look of the standard ones so if I do anything I think it'll be the x-pipe for a little extra deep throaty roar.
