I'm about to do something like this but doctor a shift boot adapter making to small drills into the housing and making it work like a regular "reverse lockout" switch

The original shifter looked like a grampa shifter. The new one that you replaced it with looks like something from the future. (AWSOME) I'll just wait until a company makes one with springs. I'm not as creative as you. Hopefully they'll make cool ones. Like the one in your video.

If I just want to replace the top plastic knob should I just use the same spring assembly and push it back? Thanks

I don’t think you can use the same spring with a different knob. I hope this answers your question.

Both answers are correct. You can install a universal one but one that is specific to the car would be better
