Loved your comments. Been riding RTs and GSAs since 1997. If fact, I've now got about 340K miles on all of these bikes. I just bought my latest RT, a 2019. I specifically did not want the large TFT of the 2021.... I've only started the bike three times since I picked up. Hopefully can ride some tomorrow! Steve, Newport, OR, USA

I will be tempted when the RT is upgraded to include a TFT display (like the RS and GS), LED main headlight and ‘wonderwheel’ functionality fully integrated with the navigator (like the GS and RS). If all those items were sorted I would have been heavily tempted to trade my 1200 on the 1250. No doubt the engine is better but the rest of the bike is exactly the same as mine. Keeping my 1200 for now. No more $ for BMW yet 😂

2018 BMW R1200 RT Owner comment: I am perfectly content with the power output on my bike and have no desire to explore more horsepower or torque. However, I have heard that the engine is a little quieter with the new changes and THAT would interest me but I would not upgrade on that benefit alone. Back2TheBike Fair enough, it’s that kind of bike, just an observation since shift cam comes into play (according to BMW) at 5000rpm or pretty wide open throttle. I don’t think of 6000-7000rpm as thrashing it when the red line is at 9k. Whilst the R1200 does encourage shifting early, it does seem to enjoy the occasional holding onto the lower gears. I wish the fog and sos buttons weren’t an after thought hand me down from the GS with the mirror stem cut outs, in fact there’s a lot about the bike that makes the statement that the GS is the primary target of their attention.

Hi Neil, Have been subscribed since I found your initial test ride vids on the v storm,bmw etc some 18 months ago. You did say you were a returning biker but I believe if my hearing is correct,in this vid you say your last bike was an FS1E. That puts you in the same age bracket as myself, my last bike being the RD50. I never took my test (in those days stick on the L plate and you were good to go forever) and last November decided to take take my full "big bike" as the instructor called it test. I passed first time. What interests me in watching your return, did you simply get off the fizy some 30 years ago,go to sleep and then wake up and decide to call in at your local bwm dealer and ask for a test ride,(very brave man) a couple of years ago, or did you take some instruction on some larger bikes before walking into the show room and asking for a test ride. Would scare the life out me doing that to be honest. I'm finding only the main dealers will give a test ride ,the smaller Indies will not offer one due to lack of experience, I can understand that though. Looking at the 650 versys for myself in a month or so. Enjoy the vids,Thanks.

Hi Stephen, that's a great question. I put a lot of thought into it and decided it would be unsafe for myself and unfair to a dealer if I just walked in after 37 years and 'jumped on' their bike. I watched a lot of YT video before I got anywhere near a bike. I visited and chatted with a few dealers just to take a peek at what was available. I sat on a few, and thought - wow, that's big! Next step (having bought all my kit) was a back to biking day which I did with Honda in Bedford, 2 hours in the car park then 2 ride-outs. The instructor mentioned a Suzuki Cafe Ride a week later, so I booked a ride on a Vstrom 650. Only 30 mins, but more time on the bike, and the dealer was happy for me to do it. Confidence building, so rode the Vstrom 1000 as well. I asked Suzuki for a 'preper' demo, so visited them and rode both bikes again the following week. Next stage was, in one day, to take out the R1200GS, then the RT from the BMW dealer, but taking it very gingerly. All this is videod if you want to check it out. The sensible (and my initial favourite) choice would have been a 650, but having waited so long, and not wanting to have to trade up after only a year, I dived in for the RT and have no regrets - it was the perfect choice.

Nice review. I test rode the 1250RT and you definately notice more power at the top end but not at lower to mid range which is where you'll be nost of the time unless you dont like your licence. I bought a really nice 2017 R1200RT which has the updated gearbox, which is still the same on the 1250, and that makes things a lot smoother. Output shaft end has damping so if you compare the '17 to '18 models to the new 1250 there's not much in it. Gold forks denote the Dynamic Esa but the 1250 goes another step further by auto preload too. Gearing is a bit different on the GS but the RT is more planted at speed. The rest is simply a case of horses for courses. I dont like the games console style Tft on the GS. New RT's and K1600's, from 2020, will most probably get a nice car like Tft where you still have seperate speedo and tacho on either end but they will be virtual like on the new Bmw cars with various info and sat nav in the middle with option for full screen etc... Nice cornering but it didn't exactly raise your pulse..😉. Only kidding..Entry speed = control. Simply love the RT. Does everything you could want and you never see one in a mishap on KZbin.... Good old Roger Moore...

Neil. According to my local BMW dealer, the 2020 RT is to have a TFT display. A larger one than the GS has. 10"I believe. I love my RT but hate the asymmetric dials. The 2020 version will be very welcome. I do worry about your straight lining of roundabouts! Were you taught that too on the AIM? You would certainly fail your driving test if you did that on the day!.
@Back2TheBike5 жыл бұрын
The IAM do teach it, as well as my mentor SeaFlyFisher. As long as the lanes aren't marked (say for a right turn), you've checked your mirror and there's no following traffic, and done a right shoulder lifesaver, the straight line is the cleanest, quickest route out of the hazard.
@guyholt37575 жыл бұрын
@@Back2TheBike Neil. My argument to that would be that the information you are giving to any approaching vehicles at the next exit, is that you are turning right, that's what tour position on the roundabout says. If that is the case then someone at the next exit might think it's ok to pull on to roundabout as they are turning left! Any thoughts?
@Back2TheBike5 жыл бұрын
@@guyholt3757 I'd argue that because I can now maintain a straighter course (always good on a slippery surface) and higher speed I'd be out of the situation well before they would come into conflict with me. Assuming the RAB isn't split into marked lanes it's my right of way as well. As always, I should be able to stop in the distance I can see to be clear so I'd be watching him to see if he's going to do something daft.
@seaflyfisher5 жыл бұрын
Hi Guy - theres no problem with taking a straighter course through roundabouts as long as the lanes aren't directional and specifically marked and that you're not coming into conflict with other road users - if its unmarked and clear, then the straightest course is quickest and safest particularly in adverse weather and road surface conditions - the bigger the circumference of your course, the more upright you can keep the bike which gives you stability and helps you carry speed safely. Your course will still show other drivers where you're going and if its needed, a signal as you pass the penultimate junction will confirm your intentions. With the bike more upright, if you do need to brake or take evasive action for any reason you are automatically in a much safer place being more upright, to be able to do it. There are no harsh changes in direction taking that straighter course which will allow you to put power in earlier and leave an area of high potential danger quicker - its also a good opportunity to create that gap between you and any following traffic as you negotiate the roundabout quickly - if you watch Neils course through the roundabouts, its nothing drastic thats going to confuse other drivers, its just a smooth, no fuss, flowing course through the roundabout and away quick. Roundabouts are no different than taking any other bend and the bigger you can make the circumference of your turning circle on all of them, the safer you'll be keeping yourself - you'll still be leaving the roundabout at the same exit point, you've just taken a slightly straighter course to get there - stay safe out there - Dale

Having owned a 2015 FJRes and having ridden Wollaston’s R1250rt, they are totally different styles of bike, the FJR in my opinion is more manageable, the engine more powerful but needs to be revved harder (torque level) than the RT, I found that when stopping there’s not a lot of room for your left foot to touch down, which just made me slightly nervous with it (loan bike) probably something you would get used to. I would say the FJR is a closer match to the R1200RS (soon to be the R1250RS) as the RT feels physically much bigger.. horses for courses. Good review though.

hi buddy from south Africa. I am considering trading my k1600 GTL for the 1250 RT. Biggest reason is the less weight. you did mention that an aftermarket touring screen will sort out the buffeting problem, any particular make you can recommend?. o personally prefer the analog dials with the little LCD in the middle, like my k bike, to an all out tft dash. I find it much more classier and easier to read. I also think adding all those electronics to the bike will push the prices much higher, like what happened to the GS. thanks for review buddy

Thanks for this Neil. I'm going to take a 1250 out when my 1200 is in for service. It looks a nice upgrade, but not one I need to dash to Mr BMW to buy before the 1200 has reached it's normal time to change. And you still can't lock the damn GPS to it with central locking (I think). I've heard the quickshifter is smoother though?
@Back2TheBike5 жыл бұрын
The quickshifter, rather like the gears in general, is marginally slicker, but nothing like that on the S1000XR where you hardly need the clutch.
@SaladDodger42215 жыл бұрын
This RT upgrade hasn't done enough for me compared to the 1200 - BMW should ( and probably could) have gone further but they are no mugs when it comes to selling bike units.They will sell this upgrade by the barnful and the next, and the next.... If you are looking for an upgrade at this moment in time go with the new 1250RS ( the mini-bus rather than the bus ) - a slim line RT if you like. For me personally - I would hang on a bit longer and keep an eye out for the upgraded s1000XR with TFT etc. The 4 cylinder engine is quite buzzy but fantastically flexible - can be a sheep or lion depending on how you feel ! The bike I miss the most is the k1600 GT - just wow but too heavy for me even though it had a reverse gear and had every gizmo you could shake a stick at.The ultimate riding machine but don't drop it.
@Back2TheBike5 жыл бұрын
Agreed Gordon with the S1000XR and new TFT. AS you say BMW have cornered the market here. The RT is IMHO the world's best touring bike and I'm delighted with mine, but the 1250 unit by itself is not sufficient reason to upgrade ... yet!

Marks out of 10? I'll give the RT 8 LOL. Nice real world test Neil, though if it's anything lije the GS most of the stuff on the 1250 you mention is already on the last MY version of the 1200 so the only real difference is the engine. I might take a 1250 out when mine goes in for it's service in April just to see what ghe 1200/1250 GS differences are but I'm not looking to change anytime soon
@Back2TheBike5 жыл бұрын
I think a lot of people, me included, agree with that Adrian. For the extra dosh you'd need more capability than just the slightly faster/smoother engine. They could have added the new TFT (looks like 2020 according to Guy Holt (above); a more aerodynamic windscreen; and an LED headlamp. Now that would be tempting ...

As i recently had a 2014 RT which i px for the GS Exclusive 1250 i find the GS nimbler and the quick shift is a lot smoother (no cluncsk) , plus it comes in a lot more colours than RT Black. Reasons for my change..I wanted to upgrade to the new RT but after a test ride the only big difference i found was the engine itself and i was looking for more upgrades than that for the price . So for i decided against the RT and bought my first ever GS . I have to admit i miss the five stage heated grips and seat (one of the upgrades i was looking for along with full TFT screen).

Interesting observations Neil. It seems like the RT isn't as obvious a step up as the GS. Even there, I wouldn't update my 2016 GSA to the 1250 model as the gains are pretty academic wrt the purpose of the bike...the extra investment over a trade in simply do not stack up. Major benefits I saw were better suspension, smoother and stronger engine, great TFT and better handling. That lot isn't worth the 10K upgrade though over a trade in unless you are Mr money bags. The 2016 bikes are still superb bikes with great handling and more than adequate power. More is always welcome but not needed on the lighter GS. Things that niggle are no tft for the new RT...screens that are still not as good as they should be (GS), gearboxes which are not a slick as they could be. How did the handling compare with the 2016 RT and what tyres are now OE? Do you know what the extra mass for the RT attributed to Neil? I won't be upgrading any time soon. Perhaps in a few years.
@Back2TheBike5 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, I agree with your analysis. Handling was identical to my 16 plate RT which has the ESA but not the 'auto' function. 1250's Tyres? Michelin (Road GT??) I think the extra weight +14KG is down to the engine.

Well, here I am a few years later having sold the GS for an RS which I’ve thoroughly enjoyed and after being spoiled riding our blood bike RT’s, I find myself changing to an RT! I tried the RS as a better all rounder to the GSA, which it is. Owned it fir a while now However, the RT can be made to hustle and I can’t see past the comfort and weather protection of the RT. Turns out, it is the best all round bike😂

Thanks for the video, you didn't quite answer the question, '...would I upgrade from a 1200 to 1250'. You didn't comment btw on rearward visibility as you were back to the stock mirrors only - did you find it a problem in practice? I think incidentally 'Hill Hold' has changed to auto now so, driven off the IMU, the bike 'knows' when it on a hill! The SOS button is entirely self-contained and does not need to go through any BlueTooth link, it has a miniature speaker and microphone. You can press the button of course in a manual sense but the bike will automatically call (Barcelona, I've tried it!) should you have a fall where you might be too incapacitated to reach it. Finally I read somewhere that in suspension 'Auto' mode, the bike weighs you. Spooky!
@Back2TheBike5 жыл бұрын
To answer the question (I did when I said 'why wouldn't you') but it's clearly the logical way to go, but the delta over my LE 16 plate isn't worth the investment yet. Mirrors? The RT's mirrors are fine on a dry day but IMHO next to useless in the wet, with badly occluded vision from road grunge, particularly on the near side. The stalked units I've fitted have given me 20/20 vision all winter. I didn't realise the SoS was self contained, but didn't want to tamper in case Thunderbird 1 suddenly appeared ;-)
@kevinmobile5 жыл бұрын
@@Back2TheBike Neil, I've now ridden an RT with SOS over quite a bit of England and Wales and perhaps surprisingly (given it can 'talk' to more than one provider) there are often significant (even A road) areas where there is no service. The dash informs you of that. You also need a 3/4G line of sight connection to the cell site to get the co-ordinates out to the ECALL centre but the Motorrad hype that states: "The intelligent emergency call is active from the start of the journey and is ready for use at all times". While this is really a telecoms/geography issue of course (and 5G will not solve this), that claim above might interest the ASA!
