For 2019 Jeep updated their compact utility vehicle with a new exterior, a new engine and the latest uConnect infotainment systems. The new 2.0L turbo engine is one of the most powerful in the segment delivering and the existing 3.2L V6 remains one of the last 6-cylinder options in the segment. In addition to the extra oomph, the Cherokee is the only truly off-road capable compact crossover in America. Each of Jeep's three AWD systems is more capable than the competition. The basic system offers a full center lock and user controllable software, the next level adds the segment's only 2-speed transfer case and the Trailhawk model tosses in a rear locking differential for the maximum in traction.

I have a new 19 Wrangler Sahara, and taking delivery of our /wife's new 19 Cherokee Limited on Saturday. I've had Jeeps, Toyota's, Honda's, Land Rovers, Kia's. Fords, Chevy's, you name it I've had it. Always loved my Jeeps, from 1990 new to 97 new, to now and Never had any major mechanical issues. My Toyota Tundra electrical system was horrible. Honda Ridgeline I loved but had quite a few brake jobs. VW Tiquan was excellent even though it had a horrible reliability history with Consumer Reports. My Ford F-150 was bulletproof. My 4 Land Rover/Range Rovers were all unbearably unreliable from start to finish. I could go on and on. Jeeps have a spotty reliability history, but I've had great luck with them, as did quite a few people I know. This new Cherokee is really nice!!!. If you feel like complaining about something you don't own and haven't owned, do it somewhere else.

I still prefer a v6. More durable than a four cylinder. Especially a turbo

@Tommy C yes but it will have a lot more issues down the line. You are over working that tiny 4 banger which is taking a significantly higher level of abuse compared the the Naturally aspirated V6 with port injection.

Well, I have always wanted to own a Jeep, but year in and year out, consumer reports shreds the relibility of Jeep brands. Even now I am looking at Jeep but knowing what I know from consumer report and from friend thought the years, I don't think I can pull the trigger and buy a Jeep.

I've watched numerous vehicle reviews, but this one is the most professionally filmed, informative, and crisply edited presentation I've encountered thus far in my youtube meanderings. Fantastic Jeep model by the way. My favorite 2019 model Jeep Cherokee is the Trailhawk from both an aesthetic and offroad capability perspective, but the entire Cherokee line for 2019 and newer are both visually appealing and very capable from a performance standpoint.

This is why we held off on buying the current version... it seems that they finally fixed that problem with this 2019 model. All reviews that we have watched make it a point to call that out. Many improvements... I like that they went up on tow capacity from the 2,000 to now 4,500... Can't wait to see it in the dealers and take it for a test ride.

Jeep nailed it with this version!! I love the upgraded look and the size is perfect for my tastes!!! I love the 2.0 Turbo, I've had that engine in my last two cars (SUV and Coupe) and it was perfect in it's speed for my needs. I was seriously considering the Volvo XC40 but this one may be my next car. Safety features are important, you didn't mention too much about that or maybe I missed it.

Great review. They did a very good job addressing the cars shortcomings, but the optional 2.0 turbo isn't cheap. And why bother with 3 different motors? Also the cargo area is puny compared to Rav4 / CR-V, and pricing overall sure is ambitious.

I just looked at another review of the 2019 Cherokee, and they said the ZF 9-speed was still an issue. They tested a Trailhawk and an Overland, both with the turbo 2.0 4, and they said " this nine-speed’s lag problem is far from cured by the new engine; it’s merely less frequent and less noticeable at lower speed" and for passing, there was a very noticeable 2 to 3 second lag when hitting the gas pedal that "tests the limits of what’s safe and reasonable." Looking back, did you notice any of what they reported?

Good review. I drove jeeps for over 20 years. Unfortunately had very bad luck in terms of reliability. Last one was a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Sold it a few weeks ago. My daily driver is a Tesla Model S. On my second now. Sad how a company making cars for less then 10 years can make a car more reliable then Jeep. Hopefully Jeep will get better some day! Loved those things other then the reliability!
@ColonelMarcellus

Back in the 1990s, Jeeps got a bad rep (especially among law enforcement types) for being unreliable. Encumbered, rather than blessed, with technology, the would just up and quit, and for little or no reason. Took forever to figure out what was wrong with them and maybe you could discover the problem and get it fixed within a month or two. Now I see Jeeps all over the road and am being led to believe that their reliability and technology are far superior to that of previous models. Any comment? (I'm considering buying my first AWD or 4WD in my 50 years of driving experience. Maybe they'll give me an "old-fart" discount!)

@MichaelSmith-kr9qw
@MichaelSmith-kr9qw 6 жыл бұрын
Actually it is a Mopar designed engine when Fiat took over they took the engine and had Alfa modify it for their needs. Even though the two engines are of the same design there is quite a bit of differences between the two...... It is like some of the engines from Global Engine Alliance which was Mitsubishi Kia/Hyundai and Chrysler same architecture but completely different engines all together. This has been frequently discussed on Allpar forums... The 2.0l Alfa engine is a closed deck design whereas the one Jeep and other models to come is of a open deck design. Just to clear up some of the misconceptions Kevin !

Its not worth it though. Why get a Cherokee if you aren't going to tow, since its class leading. But you can't get the tow package with the turbo unless you get the top transmission choice with the crawl gears, which together with the turbo upcharge makes it extremely expensive. @mountainhobo
@mountainhobo 6 жыл бұрын
The European fantasy mpg ratings are cool. You can keep the diesel (more expensive to buy, expensive in maintenance, and nightmare to repair), but manual transmission would be nice. That I am jealous of.

@weedmastersr
@weedmastersr 6 жыл бұрын
It's the real world mpg. The official fantasy rating is 45 mpg. As I said, it gets 35 real world mpg. Diesel is about 30 cents per liter cheaper to buy here. Maintenance is also no issue as the 2.0 diesel from Fiat is very common. The repair can get expensive if something like the injectors fail, but it won't as Fiat makes some of the most reliable diesel engines. It's the electronics that I worry about. The manual is what makes this Jeep acceptable in my view. It's dead reliable and gives full control, unlike the ZF9 speed.
@weedmastersr
@weedmastersr 6 жыл бұрын
Sorry but I've never seen a Muslim here in Eastern Europe. They're extremely rare.
@mountainhobo
@mountainhobo 6 жыл бұрын
No, sorry, still not buying the diesel bit. Diesels are great if you want to tow. Also, the diesel fuel is more expensive here (US) than gasoline, by a good margin. In passenger cars diesel just does not make financial sense here. Manual transmission, however, would definitely make it nice. Also, since I do not live in Colorado and don't have to worry about driving at crazy elevations, I would rather skip the small turbo in favor of a normally aspirated V6. In the end, however, this is all rather academic. I don't think I would buy it anyway. The only Jeep I lust for is the Wrangler. Jeep == Wrangler. Since I live in a big city (at least until I retire), Wrangler makes little sense, though. I will give it some time. If the Cherokee improves its reputation for reliability at least to Honda's level, I will consider it. -- What part of Eastern Europe?

I have a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit. I love the vehicle and absolutely hate the stop/start technology. My friend told me that it's now on his Ford and I see the 2019 GMC/Chevy Silverado will also have it. I had a 2013 Toyota Avalon hybrid and it was seamless from electric to gas. 5 years later...... I have a new vehicle that has this terrible stop/start technology. It changes your driving habits and you will soon learn how often you will turn your car off and this thing auto resets. You will start taking your foot off the gas at intersections to make sure your vehicle doesn't turn off and you will then take your eyes off the road to see if you turned the dumb button on. I will either need to go European or back to Toyota as they mastered this. I can't tell you how much I hate this feature!

We had a 2016 Cherokee. Worst vehicle we’ve ever had. 4 trips to the dealer to fix a rattle in the sunroof, differential blew and had to be replaced after 10k, automatic lift gate wouldn’t shut a few times, heated seat wouldn’t shut off twice - even after turning the car off, and the final straw was when a pile of smoke poured out of the exhaust on a cold start once. Never had any issues or jerkiness with the 9sp, but way too many other problems that made this our first and last Jeep.

yeah I know they all won't be that bad, but after having owned 20 different vehicles over our lives, this one (and my 95 Dodge Neon) were the worst. We've had Saturns, Fords, Chevs, Pontiacs, Toyotas, Mazdas, Audis (well, one Audi), and never had a gremlin like this one. Plus the dealer service experience was terrible. I'd love to check out the new Wangler, but it would take a lot to get me to consider another FCA product.

Brian - I am considering to purchase an Overland. I drove the 3.2L V6 last week, and I drove the 2.0T today. As we left the dealership, the tank was about empty, so the salesperson put in about 1/2 a tank of Regular 87 octane at a Shell station. I drove it for about 10 miles, and IMHO, this engine was way more responsive than the V6. I did a couple of 0-60 runs, but of course did not time them. I also contacted Chrysler, and DL'd the owners guide. The car will operate safely on REG gas, and that is all that is required. They do recommend premium for the best performance. I don't think I would bother unless I was climbing in the mountains, or towing.

I parked my 98 ZJ next to a new Cherokee a few weeks ago, both are practically the same size as far as length and width, however the new Cherokees just sit lower to the ground more car-like than an SUV...they're nothing more than a car with a couple inches more ground clearance. Need to find a new Grand Cherokee to park next to and compare.

It's so heave because its engineered for the regididy and durability needed for it to be capable off road and hold up. The compotion is lighter because it is no where near as capable and thus neededs nowhere the extra body material and structure that the Cherokee does as they are meant for soft roading ie a rough dirt road with a few small rocks and a tiny bit of mud, not rock crawling etc like the Cherokee is designed to do.

When talking about the rear cargo. You make it sound bad to have a compact spare tire! Maybe you didn't mean it that way. But, it's great that jeep is still putting a compact spare tire in the vehicle. I wish they would engineer the vehicle to support a full-size spare tire. I think it should be highly noted when a vehicle comes with a spare tire considering manufacturers are using our safety or lack of, to justify fuel savings and cargo capacity.

Yes Ive had 2 a 2011 and a 2013 both Overlands. Both with the 3.6 V6 and zero issues. they were both leases so they were gone by 40K miles so I can't speak to reliability for the long term. But for me they were excellent vehicles and got me through the worst snowstorms the northeast could dish out. Also ran them on the beach in the summer and they were great. Never got stuck once. Loved them so much I got a 2014 Ram 1500 hemi and a 2015 Durango Citadel V6. Those 2 also leases and zero issues. There was a time I would say that I would never own a Chrysler product but that time has long past. Can't wait to order a 2019 Ram 1500 next month!

A lot of it depends on how well you maintain the vehicle. I had a 96 ZJ and had 230K+ miles on it and many of those miles were offroad in some pretty nasty locations, never had any problems other than it takes hours trying to get several inches of mud off the under carriage. Just regular maintenance and it did just fine best vehicle in the snow/ice here in Idaho. I now have a 98 ZJ with 153k on it and so far no issues with it either other than a pesky door switch that is failing causing the interior lights to turn on randomly, fixing that this weekend with a $1 switch from pick-a-part.

It's not that the transmission is different Alex, it's about the number of failures and also the fact it was tested on us. Here's how bad it looks: www.carcomplaints.com/Jeep/Cherokee/2015/transmission/ I had to change my transmission at 5000 miles. They first almost took out the second gear in a software upgrade to stop the transmission to fail, but for me and many others that didn't stop it to fail anyway. Horrible experience.

The 2.0 is direct injected the 3.2 is not. The 2.0 has a shorter oil change interval and requires 0w20 compared to the 3.2 which takes 5w20. Also worth noting is that the 2.0 has a recommendation of premium fuel, if not using premium it loses some performance and won't achieve the hp and tq figures listed where the 3.2's figures are based on the use of 87 octane. We just bought a 2019 Cherokee and we decided on the 3.2, if is a proven engine that makes good power and gets decent mpg's. I am Leary of any with a turbo and direct injection seems to have a ton of issues with carbon build up so we went with the "keep it simple stupid" approach when making or choice...lol
