I drive a CX3, can’t be happier driving my little SUV, best purchase decision in my life.

OK so I am going to tell you all about my 4 and a half years living with a CX3. Let me begin by saying that it definitely not for everyone. It is a small car with adaquate space for 2 adults and two small kids. Luggage space is quite limited but if you pack your luggage with care you can actually get quite a lot in. In my case, being a 77 year old with the love of my life, my wife is the same age. So for just the two of us - space is adaquate and front seats are pretty comfortable. Build quality on this car is good. After 4.5 years there are zero rattles. I recently saw an owners comment in which the guy complained that the under side of his CX3 was rotten with rust. I whole heartedly dispute this comment. I live in an ocean front apartment in Chile. My home is literally meters from the Pacific Ocean. I recently took my car for an oil change and after reading this owner comment I actually got under my car while it was up on the lift and the only rust was on the exhaust, which is totally normal and to be expected with any car. I was very careful in my search for rust because, living as close to the ocean as I do I was concerned after ready this complaint. Now let me just talk about the general performance and driving experience of my car. While I would never claim that this is a high powered sports car - I will certainly state categorically that it is very much of a fun car to drive with pretty much athletic performance. Chile is chock full of hills and there is no way to avoid them. My car more than manages the hills usually in third gear leaving most of the other vehicles climbing alongside us behind. It takes the challenge in its stride without over-reving or huffing and puffing. It is a sporty, fun well made little car and after almost 5 years of living with it, I enjoy my car more and more every time I get into it and drive it.

We just bought a used 2019 CX-3 Touring/Sunroof Pkg. Only 9k miles on it. $20k. Soul Red. After driving a dozen compact and subcompact SUVs, including the Mazda CX-30 & CX-5, Hyundai Kona, Buick Encore GX, Kia Sportage, Honda HR-V & CR-V, new Ford Explorer, my wife liked this the best. We have no kids and this is great for her suburban driving. It is stylish, sophisticated and has great driving dynamics. We were underwhelmed by the new CX-30. The Kona is very quick, but has a low rent interior and requires constant corrections on the highway.

Just brought one of these today! I’m not sure if I agree on power/speed the both have relatively the same amount of horsepower CX3 has 148 and the Kona has 147. What surprised me was the torque the CX3 has 146 vs the Kona only has 132. My hubby test drove both and a Chevy Trax and hands down the CX3 was a better drive for all wheel. Even thou the base model doesn’t have all the features like the Kona but there are things the Kona doesn’t have either in their base model like a push bottom start. As for size of cargo they looked pretty much the same for me. And the Kona’s back seat is small as well than the CX3 as I sat in the back of both for a bit while they hubby is drive. We have two boys 11 and 7 and they will fit pretty comfortable in the back in terms of leg room well into there teen. We were definitely worried that the Kona would not. And you can basically get the next model up from the base model for about $10-15 a month and it even up more than the Kona base with the CX3 having a heated steering wheel, alloy rims, leather wrapped steering wheel and leather wrap shift bob, climate control, heated mirrors, rain sensing wipers, passenger seat lifter, and auto headlights. I haven’t pick this up yet but I’m happy we pick it over the Kona and even the Tucson for our particular needs

The Kona has 2 engine options. The Limited and Ultimate have a 1.6 turbo with 175 hp/195 lb-ft torque -- it is much quicker than the CX-3.

As usual an excellent, highly detailed and informative review, Alex. A bonus for me was your discussion of Mazda's long hood necessitated by the large exhaust manifold placed just behind the engine. It answers a puzzle I've wondered about for some time. How is it that Mazda's three row midsize crossover, the CX-9, is among the longest of the category (199") yet offers the smallest interior passenger and cargo space? It's 10" longer than the Kia Sorento, for example, but provides less interior space in all three rows and less overall cargo space. I had assumed the inefficient design was a pure styling choice but based on your comments I think there's a more complex explanation involving fuel efficiency. And while the design impacts the utility and interior space of the CX-3, it's especially problematic in the larger CX-9 where the size makes driving in traffic and parking more of a challenge without functional advantages. As far as the CX-3 is concerned, I understand that almost every manufacturer feels they have to offer a sub-compact SUV but I really wonder about its advantages over a similar size hatchback, especially considering that the revamped Mazda 3 will be available soon. Some (my wife included) may prefer the higher seating position of a crossover but in a sub-compact that makes little pretense of being an off-road vehicle it's not much of an advantage and a crossover suffers in terms of looks, performance, and handling. Ah well, to each his (or her) own.
@theconformist23996 жыл бұрын
The only "advantage" the CX-3 has over the Mazda3 hatchback is the higher seating position while driving. The CX-3 and Mazda3 share the same ground clearance, so the former isn't winning on that front. It's even stranger that the Mazda3 hatchback has more passenger AND cargo room than the CX-3 does. So why buy the CX-3? My guess is if you REALLY need the higher ride height (for some reason) or just dislike anything not a CUV/SUV (which are seemingly the majority of Americans nowadays).

Excellent review, really nailed it. The CX-3 is a great-looking subcrossover -- my fave on looks alone -- but its underpowered and underfeatured in today's market. Too bad Mazda didn't stick their 2.5L engine in there, but maybe it's too big for the small chassis. The infotainment should have been iPhone/Android capable long ago; it's ridiculous that they're still waiting on a software upgrade. As much as I love the looks of the CX-3, it's too expensive for what you get. I'd buy the Kona in a heartbeat.

I checked one of these out in person including taking it for a test drive. I had to cross it off my list because it's just too cramped inside and a bit too shy on the cargo space. I like the idea of the CX3 but Mazda should have built on the same platform as the Mazda3 but instead they built it off of the Mazda2 chassis which is tiny. I wouldn't expect or want any adults to have to sit in the back seats of the CX3 which is fine if you want to consider the CX3 to be a 2-seater vehicle, but in that case that really limits the appeal of the car. With an average sized adult sitting the the front seats with the seat slid back far enough for them to be comfortable, it creates such a cramp back seat area that I wouldn't expect nor want any adult to have to sit i the back seat. I know I wouldn't be able to. It's ok for kids but that's about it. The dealership insisted I check out the CX5 while I was there and I did check it out but the CX5 is just way too bulky, even the way it handles, it's more like a mid-sized SUV. So Mazda has a clear gap there as far as the it's crossover line-up goes. If Mazda comes out with a Mazda3 based CX3 for the next generation then that will be in the sweet spot range that I'm looking for which is bigger than the current CX3 but not as bloated as the CX5. There are a few things that could clinch the deal on a new Mazda3 based CX3. 1 - Shorten that hood length a bit so that more of the total length of the car goes towards usable cabin space instead of wasted front overhang. Yes I understand the whole exhaust header issue, but that can be worked around with a Mazda3 based redesign. 2 - Make the AWD version available with a 6-spd MANUAL transmission option. That would do wonders to enhance the "fun" potential of this car. 3 - Lower that rear hatch opening to make it easier to load/unload things in to the cargo area and make the hatch opening wider as well so that larger items can fit. That shouldn't be much of a challenge if the CX3 switches to the Mazda3 chassis. 4 - Bump up that HP just a bit to 155 HP. Those improvements would definitely broaden the appeal of the CX3 and get me to take the plunge.

Considering the Mazda3 hatchback has more passenger AND cargo room/area than the CX-3 does... I see no reason to buy the CX-3 over the Mazda3 hatchback... unless you REALLY need that slightly higher seating position inside. The CX-3 doesn't even have more ground clearance than the Mazda3 does; they're both equally off the ground at 6.1 inches. Maybe it's because I'm younger and don't mind lower seating positions (or have knee/back pain, etc.), but I *really* do not understand the compact crossover segment. They rarely do much better than sedans in passenger/cargo area, and usually fare worse than hatchbacks.

Mazda knows there is a demographic out there that needs & wants exactly what the CX-3 is. I considered the Toyota CH-R but they haven't listened to their customers & offered AWD. Where I live in Rhode Island those CH-R's are nowhere to be seen. They just don't sell because of the No AWD. AWD aside. The styling/drive & build quality & color of the Mazda can't be beat.

@@sic22l obviously you've never been inside a CX3. You start getting some engine noise only over 120km/h, however, the CX3's engine sounds SO GOOD it's like hearing Vivaldi while driving.
@sic22l6 жыл бұрын
Mazda engines sound terrible, they're one of the worst sounding 4-bangers on the market. Now only it's unpleasant and metallic, they sound like they were struggling. It's also not only about the engine noise. Tire roll and wind noise are even more important factors and they get pretty loud from 60km/h.

scaldon2 Curiously many of the compact offerings from all manufacturers get the same or better fuel efficiency as their subcompact brothers. I mentioned this in a comment on another Alex vehicle. I’m not sure why.

@@alliejr yeah alliejr I never understood that . It doesn't make sense. You would think that the larger the vehicle the more fuel consumption it would use. In my opinion it doesn't make sense to go with sub compact if compact will give u better fuel economy. I'm debating between 2019 rav4 and 2019 Forrester. Not sure which to go with .

subcompact suvs get old tech - they dont sell enough or have high enough margins to develop new transmissions or highly efficient engines. they are built to a price point. where a compact suv can top out at 38k and they sell well over 100k of them a year. subcompact suvs have lower sales volume and prices dont exceed $25k
