Bought my first Miata 30 years ago. Just purchased my fourth. But ya know, it goes beyond that. Here’s this rather small car company, and when the whole world is saying the little 2-seat roadster is dead - that the convertible is dead - what do they do? They come out with the Miata. And when the whole world is saying the rotary engine is an experiment that failed, what do they do? They come out with the marvelous RX-8. This company is not like the other car companies. This company has, at its core, a bunch of engineers with a passion for automobiles. Not just bean counters with MBA’s, but engineers willing to stick their necks out to pursue something they believe in. Even when the rest of the world is saying “no, you can’t do that”. I just gotta reward a company like that with my business. And so I do. ❤️

But then dealers wouldn't deal on new ones and used ones wouldn't depreciate. I prefer Mazda remain an open secret shared by 2% of the population; you're doing well to pay MSRP at a Honda or Toyota dealer. Even when the car's crap, like a 1.5T CR-V, ZF 9HP anything, or a CVT Corolla, the dealer won't budge because they know some other sucker will buy it without knowing any better, and they'll happily tell you so. Mazdas are some of the last affordable quality out there, I got 15% off my Mazda6 and I liked it better than a Camry or Accord. Mazda themselves have said they're happy with 2% as long as it's the most loyal 2%. Compare that to VW, who approach 4% of the market on a good day, but whose crappy cars lose their "premium" sheen so quickly that buyers bounce back to another brand, and don't try VW again for 10-15 years. A brand lives or dies on its ability to move customers up through the lineup. Golfs are decent cars, but hatchbacks don't sell in America. A Passat or Jetta buyer isn't moving up the VW AG range into Audi and Porsche, the way a Toyota Corolla buyer would retire in a Lexus ES, a Honda Civic turns into an Acura TLX, or a teenager driving a used base Mazda3 will eventually carry their family in a loaded CX-5. High churn is bad for a car company, you need to create identity, loyalty, and emotional investment. That's where the highest profit margins are. A Chevy Aveo needs to become a Cadillac Escalade, not a Honda Fit and then Acura RDX. Nissan has over 5x Mazda's market share, GM over 10x, VW double, but I'd rather be Mazda right now.
@DJBla2e014 жыл бұрын
Mazda is the 2nd most popular car manufacturer here in Australia
@schwenda37274 жыл бұрын
Dylan Byrne, that isn't the case here in the US... The Cx5 sells in decent numbers, but the rest of the lineup has been way down compared to the competition. It's very understandable for the 6's numbers to be extremely low, since not only is it in a class of car most likely to be traded in for a crossover the instant they get extra $$$, but despite the gen debuting as a 2014, it started selling in mid 2013. It's basically a 7 year old car, making it its oldest car in its lineup. If you don't need a turbocharged engine or air conditioned seats, then why pay $30+ grand when you can get just about the same car lightly used for around $15 grand? But on the other hand, their Cx9... their midsize 3 row... sells only slightly more units than the 6 when the rest of the competition sells infinitely more of theirs... well into the hundreds of thousands annually when every newer mazda other than the Cx5 is a pretty rare sight in many places in America.

I’ve had a 2013 Mazda 3 I touring and traded it in at 135k miles for a 2015 i grand touring. Never had any issues with the 2013 and doubt any with the current one. The only thing I’ve heard is that some people were having issues with the automatic transmission but it was very early in the cars life, like less than 15k miles and I believe it was due to the valve body at the time which was updated. That being said, it was a very small percentage of people that had that issue so not really even a drip in a bucket for them. I’ll always recommend a skyactiv Mazda

@@jasjuaquin140 As a former Mazda tech, I can honestly tell you that the CX-9 is probably THE BEST Mazda ever! Never seen any issues with them. I have seen some issues with the Cx-5's, but mostly minor things (Seat warmers/strut covers), A LOT of issues with the CX-3's, but the CX-9 had 0 issues. Also, I prefer the 3.7 V6 over the 2.5T. While the 2.5 is much easier to work on, the power and torque are not available on-demand, since the turbo needs to spool. The 3.7 get really good mileage for its size, and it accelerates like a dream. Both of them are really quite and do a great job of isolating tires/wind/suspension noises. I think the CX-9 even beats the BMW X5 in that aspect. The (HORRID) CX-7 were canceled and had a LOT of turbochargers issues (among MANY other issues). All the "Mazda-Speed" line had Turbochargers issues as well...so I'm a little worried about Mazda's and Turbos, but only time will tell since these are brand-new designs of turbos and engines.

Upon inspecting the door jambs of all the models in a local Mazda showroom, I found that the only one on the floor not made in Japan was a Mazda3. But that wasn't a 2019. One nice thing about Mazda's being a small company is that they haven't been able to open plants here in the US until recently, so most of their cars are still made in Japan, like the two Mazdas I own. The 2019 Mazda3 models aren't selling as well as previous models, perhaps because 1) they've increased their price along with the quality of the interiors to compete with the likes of the Audi A3. I helped a Honda-leaning friend buy a car last year and once she sat in in the CX-5 the quality really got her attention and she bought the Mazda instead. And 2) the Mazda3 hatch has some polarizing styling, which I didn't particularly like in initial photographs but loved in person. The Mazda3 hatch is still available with a manual on the top trim. To repeat what was said before: If you're getting a Japanese car, get one that is made in Japan. If the one you're looking at isn't made in Japan, buy a different trim level or format (hatch vs. sedan vs. etc.) in order to get one made in Japan. Don't get a turbo if you can get a larger naturally-aspirated engine (e.g. get the Mazda 2.5L non-turbo vs. the Honda 1.5L turbo). Don't get a CVT for now, but hey, maybe they'll be great in a few years (get a modern automatic - or even better, a manual if you really want to be engaged in driving your car.)

I appreciate a guy who can be open minded about change. Good for you, Scotty. Toyota partnered up with Subaru and now, Mazda. That's good news for consumers. Mazda still offers a manual transmission also when a lot of companies offer automatics only.

I have a 2010 Mazda CX 9 with 155K miles, only problem I’ve had was replacing the alternator (wasn’t outrageously expensive). I have family members who drive them as well and they’ve never run into any big issues either. As far as I’m concerned Mazda is one of the best manufacturers you can buy from!
@cag92285 жыл бұрын
I have the same year with about the same amount of miles. Watch out for the brake booster failing or the water pump failing. Mazda placed the water pump INSIDE the engine. So it has two modes of failure. Mode 1 is you see some coolant leaking. Run don't walk to get that fixed. Mode 2 is the water pump starts leaking into your engine oil.
@ByDesign3335 жыл бұрын
@@cag9228 Is that mode 2 disaster pretty common in those cars?
@cag92285 жыл бұрын
@@ByDesign333 I have no idea on statistical distribution of mode 1 vs mode 2. I got lucky and had the non catastrophic failure, but if you do some light searching on KZbin you'll find videos of the mode 2 failures.

I'm on my 3rd Mazda now and very happy with all of them! Love to drive now! My 1st Mazda 3 was totaled a year after I got it because a young inexperienced guy ran a red light. That MAZDA saved my life! Then leased my 2nd Mazda CX5. When that lease expired I leased my 3rd Mazda CX5. I'll never consider driving anything but a Mazda!

My family has always had Mazdas since the early 90s when my dad bought a 92 miata, and we have always loved them. Fun cars with few problems. My wife and I have a 2016 Mazda CX-5 with almost 100k on it and we love it, no issues and a fun SUV. Happy to see some love from Scotty! Now pop out of a Miata trunk if you can fit!

2017 Mazda 3 grand touring owner. Love my car .. don’t like it love it not a single problem so far. Nicest interior and exterior Of the mid sized sedans.32k miles runs like a dream handles better than any car I’ve owned previous .. dangerously well. Avoided deer at 60mph went sideways and handled it like a race car. Biggest win with Mazda is the reliability and fact it’s not a parts car what I mean is it’s one direct steel beam from front to back not multiple pieces parted together. highly highly recommend sold cars for years and an avid enthusiast brother bought one the next year 2018 loving every bit of it .

Don’t forget Mazda Skyactiv Engines use timing chain (vs timing belt). Chains last longer, no maintenance required, and more efficient. Honda uses 50/50 Toyota uses all timing chains on their engines
@joecader4 жыл бұрын
But what are the timing GEARS made out of? I had a timing gear shear on a 71 cutlass. The gear was made of plastic, or so the mechanic said.
@98triffid4 жыл бұрын
You needn't buy a Mazda for that but yes that is a plus. Toyota had chains and went to belts and is now back to chains. I cannot think why you wouldn't design an engine that way but if you have one change that belt on time
@menofbronze91664 жыл бұрын
My old 2005 accord tensioner broke and the engine imploded. Chains do not always mean it will last forever.

Was never really a Mazda guy, but after the redesign of their cars in 2016/17, I started to take notice. The cars are simply stunning. I had a nice cadillac CTS, but really missed having a convertible, so I test drove a new 2017 MX-5 in July 2018. The dealership knocked nearly $7k off sticker and I was sold. What a fantastic little car. Handles like a demon. Last week my wife traded in her 2017 Honda Ridgeline for a 2019 Mazda CX-5 Touring. A gorgeous car to look at and even better to drive. She's happy--which says a lot because she's a truck gal. She had two Tacomas before the Ridgeline and for her to be that impressed with a small CUV says A LOT. Driving my MX-5, I've had more compliments on it than any car I've driven, including Porsche.

I did my homework and got my wife a 2016 CX-3. She's small, doesn't travel far, doesn't haul much cargo, and likes AWD. I liked it so much I finally got rid of my 2006 Honda Odyssey (kids are grown now) and got a 2017 CX-5. Gotta admit that it iss, by far, the most reliable car I've ever owned. 50K miles and not a single problem, not even annoying little glitches. But I live by what Scotty says in his videos - "PERFORM REGULAR MAINTENANCE!". Makes all the difference.
