I have a 12-passenger, 2012 Sprinter van, because I have nine kids. It's a great van. I would've liked 4x4, but that wasn't offered in the US until 2016. I also would've liked more gears (so the diesel V-6 would run at about 2,000 rpm at 75 mph), and better towing capacity. I look forward to learning how the new Sprinter compares.

I love my 2004 Sprinter, so much, I bought it from the company I work for. A high roof, LWB SRW model, I can stand up in it, and its 22’ long, it gets 17-22 MPG no matter what. I’ve had 8000lbs of pavers in it and 16’ boards with the doors closed. It tops off at 81 MPH and will run at that, fully pegged all day. The BEST thing about it, THE BEST THING, is NO DEF. No emissions, baby! It just runs and runs and runs.

It's funny that, considering how much "van life" seems to be gaining ground here in the US, that we don't have direct access to the full gambit of MB Sprinter let alone the ability to order from all the variants.
@LouisSubearth6 жыл бұрын
Aaron W The lack of options is because it would drive the price higher to offer all the variations stateside because they all have to comply with FMVSS, and not all will sell in volumes that will make profits.
@aaronw86066 жыл бұрын
Agree in terms of "on-site" availability. I I was looking more to what Volvo is/was doing by only offering the V90 Cross Country in U.S. showrooms, but you could order the regular V90 directly from Sweden. Since the platform construction shouldn't really vary between the vans, MB could theoretically do the same thing. Over the life of the vans "generation(?)", MB could greatly widen their profit potential with the relatively "low cost" of FMVSS certification. It may take longer for me to get, but I get what I want and MB gets the sale.

Andy Hass a few automakers are already experiencing premature starter deaths thought to be contributed by the auto start/stop features. Despite being "heavy duty" there is still a good amount of wear and tear that will likely make that starter a consumable (and more expensive as a result).

Bad points I think are 4 Cup holders on top of the dashboard so your drinks reflect in the windscreen and bottles and drinks stick up in front of the driver obstructing your vision ahead and get hot in the sun. Great idea. Put all your paperwork in the open compartments in front of the driver so they to all reflect in the windscreen to. No where to put a 2 litre bottle either. No grab handle to get in. Great when your doing multi drop driving all day so you have to grab the steering wheel to get in. I drive a works 314cdi rear wheel drive 6 speed manual gearbox lwb van in the uk. Does 29 to 32 mpg. Very low first gear have to immediately change to 2nd gear soon as the van is moving as revs rise quickly. Engine is nice and torquey though.short shift it is best

An extremely poor choice for a van in North America. Firstly, expect to become great friends with your Mercedes dealer, as you will be visiting him a lot after a few years of ownership as these are not very reliable. Their service network is a tenth the size of a domestics, so always break down in a major center as you won't find one in smaller centers, plus be prepared to wait a week or so to get in as the waiting list for service can be quite long. Parts availability is poor but since the domestics are moving away from vans manufactured in North America this may be a univeral issue, unlike Amazon shipping from Europe isn't next day. Also hopefully they are not subject to steel and aluminium tariffs implemented by the President. Then there is the brand name issue, as Mercedes service and parts comes with Mercedes pricing. If you need proof, just phone a service center and request a price for an oil change. Nice women though.

Everyone I know hates stop/start and it makes them feel really uncomfortable. I was driving my 15 Jeep Cherokee this past Saturday near San Francisco. I was in a traffic jam and my motor turned off automatically when traffic stopped, the battery had died and I was dead on the freeway. Had it not turned off, I would have been parked at my nephews house and could have dealt with it, instead of in the middle of the 580.

On the 3.0 needs excess cover firewall inside to get to all the parts that will break. Also make the van with registration option from inside truck if needed to get out of limp mode . Put the turbo were you can service it not in back. Lost soooooo much money driving mine its ridiculous. Mercedes should rethink I will be glad to fly over to help them rethink then it's a great investment. Until then money pit.

One thing not commented is the lack of oomph (it shows European manufacturers doesn't care about it) the new Sprinter still has, especially compared to the Transit. Outputs seem to be 160hp for the I4 BlueTec and 187hp for both the V6 BlueTec and the new I4 gas engine. On the diesels I don't worry too much (although Mercedes has been shutout of most of the US ambulance market for its' lack of oomph and the Transit's superior stability at higher speeds, something very important on ambulances), but a "187hp T-2.0L I4"? (that's even less than the 208hp (?) of the same engine (C250 anyone?) in the Metris). In gas engines power output is king here and Mercedes cant even approach either (NA or T) of the Transit's 3.5L V6 gas engine variants, Nissan has to do with the older tech 4.0L VQ-V6 and 5.6L V8, while Fiat has to do with the 3.6L Pentastar V6 (good engine, but no power option to that). Wonder when Ford's beginning to build here the midsize Transit Custom (most likely T-2.3L I4 and T-2.7L V6 there in USDM) since it seems Mercedes specced wrong their Metris?

European brands unlike americans, tend to care that their steering wheels don t detach suddenly or their cars catch fire. regarding the 'ommph', the omph on vans is more newtons in low revs, horsepower for the type of use in these vans many times is not the most important
@crbb30996 жыл бұрын
No, what Ford is doing is a genius marketing strategy in order to convince people like you that a 3.5 litre twin turbo engine is necessary in a cargo work van. It isn't, it's fun, I agree, but at the end of the day, these are work vans that have to make life easier for you and save you the most money. A smaller Diesel engine does just that, you're not racing to job sites here, you're most likely stuck in traffic and moving slowly anyway, why do you need a huge engine? I do agree in some cases you'll need passing power, but with a torquey diesel you should be okay in most cases. As for ambulances, I doubt thats the reason too. Ambulance drivers need to drive carefully and well, not just quickly. The reason they don't use Sprinters is because generally they require more maintenance and are pricier than their "tried and true" American V8 counterparts. Those Ford and Chevy chassis with the V8s are complete dog crap in the handling department and slow as molasses, not to mention they use an enormous amount of fuel. But hey, the upfront cost is cheap and so is maintenance, and when you have tax payers breathing down your neck watching every nickel you spend, I see why they choose them.
