While the sophistication and complexity of rivals continues to expand, the Pajero sticks to the ‘keep it simple’ mantra favoured by regional and remote buyers, and carving out its own niche in the process.
No model can run forever, though, and with production scaling down for overseas markets, eventually Australia is likely to follow suit. #Mitsubishi Australia tells us #Pajero production will soldier on for a few more years but won't yet commit to an end date for Australia.
Drive takes a look at why it's popular with 4x4 buyers.

Its a shame Mitsubishi. due to their financial woes have stopped developing the Pajero. The Pajero was once a class leading and (still is) a most capable 4WD. One of the first affordable "real" 4WD to go to a monocoque chassis, coil springs and fully independent suspension. Add to that its SuperSelect 4WD system, bullet proof reputation, excellent built quality and proven reliability, as well as a rich history and success in motorsport such as the Dakar Rally, makes it one outstanding 4WD package. The Pajero was killing it, so much so that Toyota developed the Prado to compete against it. I'm a big fan of the Pajero. I've owned two in the past, an NJ & NL. The latter I wish I never sold. Long live the Pajero.

The Pajero will always be a true icon in my opinion. 12 time Dakar rally winner and proven mechanicals have all seemed to work well in its favour. “If it ain’t broke, why fix it” I’ve owned 2 Pajero’s and they are fantastic machines. People who know the real value will only understand this. It will be a shame to see a true legend become extinct.

There is a reason why Pajero doesn't house too much automation but rather rely on mechanical fancies. In one of the episode of adventures by BBC expedition team, they got flooded with water inside the Pajero and man, that vehicle kept going and finally crossed the river. The TV guy just said this "If there were too many electronic components inside then those would be affected by water and finally the car would have come stand still though it was a SUV" and that's the reason they chose Pajero - Take it anywhere you want.

I remember back in 2009 seeing a brand new 2010 brown Pajero Exceed at a car dealership in Melbourne when my parents were picking up my mother's brand new Vitara. I fell in love with the Exceed the moment I saw it. Honestly was such a good looking SUV (and still is). I turned to my mum and asked her why she didn't buy the Pajero, to which she said the Vitara was cheaper, which it was.

I live right in the bush and I'm a Pajero fan. I've owned Hilux, Landcruiser (Troopy) and several Land Rovers including the Defender, and IMHO the Pajero 3.2 diesel auto is the best of the lot. Comfort, safety, towing ability, pretty good off-road, and above all reliability.

Purchased a new Exceed model last month. Love it. Have been on a few long road trips over xmas. Super comfortable, fuel economy was better than I was expecting, great sound system, massive luggage space. Engine is powerful, plenty of low rev torque. I know how to drive properly so all the missing accident avoidance tech didn't bother me at all. Really like the understated look of it, I'm not into super flashy so it suits me. I wanted reliability and comfort, it ticks both boxes.

If you really need a good and practical 4x4, reliable, with good on road manners for family trips and enough grunt for off road challenges this is the one to go. Just gonna put it out here. I've grown up around Pajero's, got one myself now. All were 2nd or 3rd users but really, it never breaks a sweat. Currently my dad and I both drive one, both 15 years old at this stage. I'd argue that even though it lacks a lot of modern techs, you don't really need those and all they can do is break down. It's simplicity also helps with reliability. It can also go places most modern day "SUV's" can't go anymore, and it outperforms most of them when really put to the test. Numbers don't always mean anything, but it's legacy and name speaks for itselfs

I wish I could import one of these to the US right NOW!!! 2015-18. I currently have a 2003 Montero "US" spec model with just shy of 200k on the clock. I've had the vehicle for about 4 years and it has offered me so much fun off road and adventures. I LOVE how simple it is to operate and the gadgets I could care less about. The 2WD to 4WD options and low range is perfect and has taken me all over the place. I use mine with a roof top tent and I took out my 3rd row seats and use the place where they would go with storage for longer trips and essential amenities.

Remember the main reason car manufacturers started changing car bodies so frequently was just planned obsolescence, to make you want give up your cash for the next fashionable thing while changing little under the skin. I think it is respectful that Mitsubishi stuck with the Generation 4 for so long. The Gen 4 is a really well refined machine. Plus the parts interchangeability and availability is going to be great going forward.

Now have done 167000km. Yet never failed me. Still running smooth. Love the machine. Simple yet reliable. What more do you want. I've had 1994 Pajero Intercooler, 2006 Pajero Intercooler, and now this. What a great vehicle. PS: please don't compare with landcruiser. Mitsubishi Montero / Pajero are in their own league.

They continue selling well in Costa Rica, until 2018 they sold with the 4M40 2.8 turbo diesel engine, along with the 4M41 3.2 diesel common rail and 6G75 3.8 MIVEC petrol, being the most popular the 4M40. We agree that it's outdated in some new tech, but the lack of that fancy stuff makes it more reliable and cheaper to maintain. The Montero / Pajero / Shogun rocks

My 2005 3.2 auto GLX has over 300k on the clock and has been the most reliable vehicle I have owned and I have owned a lot of vehicles, build quality is superb, the 3.2 serviced correctly is a very reliable and torquey engine albeit a little noisier in early models, more soundproofing added in later series, very economical for size and the Aisan based Mitsibishi super select auto system is brilliant. The knockers are nearly always those who haven't owned one. No turbo lag off mark, good spread of torque, comfortable seating with excellent vision the Pajero has often been underrated and overlooked by those hooked on the Landcruiser and Patrol hype, (I have owned 79, 80 and 100 series cruisers and have a GU Patrol utility amongst other 4WD vehicles on our farm property) also the Paj is a much more reliable vehicle than any Landrover product, although lacking the wheel travel of the aforementioned, a 2 inch lift, locked centre differential and locked rear diff on later models the Pajero will go to just as many places as the others however has very good road manners and does indeed tow well with suspension mods (Old Man Emu 2 " lift and slightly heavier rear coils in my vehicle). I came upon my Pajero by accident when looking to purchase an HJDR 100 turbo diesel, the LC were very ridiculously overpriced and a local dealer had a very low mileage Pajero for sale at a reasonable price, I was nah, not interested, however hve suggested "just take it for a spin" nothing lost in a test drive" I was pleasantly surprised and have not regretted the purchase over 13 years ago, I also own a late model utility but somehow for a long haul comfortable drive Or the 100 km round trip shop I find the Pajero still comfortable, economical and above all reliable!

My dad owns two Montero (pajero's alternative name) a 1991 2.5 turbo diesel and a 2.5 non turbo diesel, both in manual transmission, and guys, they are extremely reliable SUVs, I'm surprised on how minor the changes are in front of a 2020 pajero, other than the touchscreen display and a few more things on the inside and outside, I see just the same SUV, even under the hood it looks basically the same!! I love how it still keep the spirit of its ancestors, it might be one of the few vehicles that keeps its mechanical vibe. Even though I own a 2015 Mercedes Benz and a 2020 Kia sportage, I still love to drive those old school monteros, there's nothing like the feel of a vehicle with no electronical help

Had NT diesel base model for 6years done several off road trips in Australia and has shown to be capable off-road aswell as a comfortable daily driver.I value reliability rather than the latest tech when I'm in remote areas.Regular servicing with quality products and a decent mechanic so far has resulted in no mechanical issues since ownership.

Your review was quite POOR, the majority of the time you criticised the car. No mention of tow capacity, approach angles, departure angles, etc......... all your focused on was gadgets, dont know how Mitsubishi let you review their vehicle.

It's unfortunately the current motoring journalists way. They buy nothing. Always have a very short term outlook on things. The real proof of these cars is if you do a comparative test between a Pajero, Prado, Discovery & Grand Cherokee in 10 years time. Get 4 similarly owned examples with 200 000km on the clock and full service history, then check for condition & total cost of ownership. The Pajero & Prado will be streets ahead and the Pajero might even edge it.

Being an owner of two Shoguns, one after the other, I like to contribute my comments too. In two ownerships the Shogun has performed flawlessly except in one occasion. One Shogun developed a leak. It was caused by an alumimium washer used in conjunction with a steel bolt in the fuel tank drain plug. Technically dissimilar metals in contact with each other can develop a corrosion problem with one being a sacrificial annode to protect the other. In this case the Aluminium washer corroded and the fuel leaked out. When I asked for a replacement the part wasn't aluminium but the fabric type. So the factory must have used the wrong washer when it ran out. This is a fundamental bi-metallic problem taught in every university and to me a clear error in the assembly. Apart from the single flaw my two Shogun ownership, spanning about 8 years, was perfect and trouble-free in every way. The car has a slow top end and rather heavy. It is very well built, ages well and did not get me any corrosion issue because I had to park it ouside unprotected all the time. Its essential duty in my case was to travel from UK to the European Alps for skiing. This is a perfect vehicle on skiing resorts. I did carry a snow chain just in case but with a set of newish all-season tyres the Shogun, with its super-select 4-wheel drive system, proved to be a car to beat on snow. It is trult a reliable work horse and good value for money especially on its 4x4 ability. I would have more of it had Mitsubishi not stopped selling diesel cars in UK.

I own a 1996 Gen2 Pajero 3.5V6 LWB. It has close to 300 000kms on the clock, is 24 years old and every single switch & light works on it. We just completed a 4000km road trip with my wife & 2 year old daughter through the South African Eastern Cape, Transkei & Lesotho. Most days we were on the road for 8 hours or more, driving seriously rough roads. We even had to use low range just to drive down the slope to the Transkei beach for a swim. Yes...there are many off-road capable vehicles that can handle obstacle courses with electronics, but there are very few off-road capable vehicles that are built to last, to cross continents and the Pajero has always been one of them. I love mine and I will easily replace it with one of these 3.2DiD Gen 4s and drive it for decades to come.

A very practical and reliable car. In the gulf it comes in 2 variants, a 3.5L v6 and a 3.8L v6, the 3.8L variant produces a whopping 245 HP !! That is just superb with the price point and reliability. Don't even get me started on it's off-road capabilities ! I go for Dune desert drives every week every season, and the stock configuration never disappoints, there was a reason why it was a rally car winner for such a long time, its DRIVETRAIN ! The off-road system on this car is soooo under rated !! it's a gem which not many people explore, once you do, you will be surprised how easily it tackles dessert dunes (the only off-roading I've done). Not the best among all the high tech fancy cars in Dubai, but it does exactly what those fancy cars do, and that's just amazing.

The Mitsubishi Type 73 Light Truck (Shin) which is exclusively manufactured for the Japan Self Defense Force since 1996 is based on the 2nd gen Pajero. So technically the Pajero is still in production in Japan, but probably if you are lucky enough you might be able to obtain one from JSDF as long as it has been retired after 25 years of use and hasn't been scrapped by then.
