Dating back more than a decade, the Nissan Frontier remains mostly unchanged; but in a world of increasing technology over engineering, this type of simple truck might be exactly what some midsize truck buyers thirst for! This PRO-4X Frontier is the off-road variant and that fits with it's wheel/tire combo, skid plates, and 10 inches of ground clearance. The 2019 Frontier is a simple truck but offers several creature comforts, just not fancy ones. To me..it takes me back to the days of when I had a 90's Dodge pickup and I felt right at home with something on the simple side. Let me know what you think of the 2019 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X compared to the new Ford Ranger, Tacoma, GM trucks, and of course the Honda Ridgeline for midsize trucks.

What's wrong with push button? I can leave my key on me and the engine running while I run into a quick run? The car also shuts down if anyone tries to take it without a key. I have this truck. But my Infiniti M37 is a Push button. I don't see how it's gay. It actually eats more gas if you keep taking out your keys and starting up the engine. So I leave the engine running rather than turning it off just to run in the store to grab a snack.

Ac switch cutting out every time it’s turned off now, electric door lock button going out, airbag light blinking started this week, rust where there shouldn’t be.. illogical under hood layout, difficult to work on.. never felt confident in this truck. never again Nissan.

In terms of reliability and value the Frontier is not getting the respect that it deserves. Great running and dependable is my experience. The way I see it, after the onset of the apocalypse and after electromagnetic weapons have decimated everything high-tech ... my Frontier will still get me around at least untill the tank empties ... which in a Frontier will happen fairly quickly but great MPG was never part of the deal.

@A M - Your right, it's not all that bad, my 07, well maintained since new, manages about 18 mpg combined. Don't put that much mileage on it and so the mpg not a huge concern, and is offset IMO by the positives of dependability , solid construction and otherwise low operating costs. Just purchased my 2nd generation Frontier. I've also had a '03 Xterra SE with the old Naturally aspirated V-6 which only put out I believe 176hp for a heavy truck. This, by far, is the best product I've bought from Nissan. I own the SV 4x4 Magnetic Black and couldn't be happier with it. The motor is strong, the truck is stiff...just no nonsense. In this day and age people are soft....this truck isn't. Great product. No need for sensors that will go south in the end....we live in the country and this beauty does it all. Even drove the Tacoma before I made the choice on this one. Durability, longevity, and btw we also own a 2013 Siverado Z71. Thanks for the video, good stuff.

She spun a bearing two weeks ago at almost 300k miles. I only ever had to replace a coil pack, serpentine belt, and a wheel bearing up until then. Bought my dads 2020 pro4 today. I’ll miss my manual trans but frontiers are solid trucks. Can’t hardly find used ones for sale.

I recently bought a 2019 Pro 4x with the premium package. I got the dealer to throw in a bed extender and B-B 84 month 100k mile warranty. I ended up getting it for 5K off of MSRP. I've been driving a 2013 Silverado Crew Cab Z71 and really loved it, but it was not a reasonable daily driver and was difficult to maneuver & hard to get in and out of (had a 1.5" front lift - my wife, kids and I are all sub-average height). I also grew tired of trying to maneuver the Chevy into the grarage. The bed height of the Silverado also presented some issues for me (short dude). So Far the Pro 4x has been great! Amazing off road capability! I did own a 2000 Jeep Wrangler sport and I have to say that the Pro 4X with the rear locker climbs better and is better in the soft sand than the Wrangler and is a lot more comfortable and infinitely better on highway. The Frontier fits in the garage without any issues. I test drove the 2019 Tacoma Base and TRD models. Amazing that they did not have a moon roof (available on the TRD) or power adjustable seats. The TRD was priced around 47K. I liked the drive of the Tacoma, but not the looks--particularly that extensive nose projection. I prefer the power train in the Frontier. It felt more responsive and the torque advantage of the Frontier made a big difference in its performance. Off road the Tacoma was more smooth and refined, but the traction control system was obnoxiously intrusive at times off road and may be a technology nanny that may offend and annoy experienced off road drivers. The seating position of the Tacoma was not flattering to my short stature and was the ultimate deal breaker. I couldn't adjust the seat enough to eliminate feeling like a 5 year old sitting in the Tacoma's driver's seat. The bed height of the Tacoma was nearly identical to that of my Silverado. The bed of the Frontier is low enough that I nearly reach to the center region of the bed without a step latter or having to climb into the bed. I do wish the Frontier offered lane keep assist, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, Apple CarPlay, better MPG (although I'm averaging 18+ overall) etc. etc. My Pro 4x so far seems to be an honest, albeit old, truck. Just a raw, tough old truck that hopefully will be there for my grandkids to drive. One more thing, for my size, the seats in the Frontier are perfect. My wife and two teen kids were in it today for 6 hours (3 of them off road) in reasonable comfort - no complaints.

The frontier may not have all the bells and whistle‘s that the newer trucks have but it is simply hard-core truck. The engine has great torque and is strong even for towing. The nice thing about this truck is it has the five speed and unlike the newer trucks isn’t always searching for gears. If you’re looking for a truck that is decently equipped and can take anything you want to throw out it, then this is the one. We’ve had Frontier’s in the family since 2007 and never had a problem in any way. They work, haul, tow all the time and have been flawless even at higher mileage.

I own a 2017 SV 4WD, bought it from a dealer last July for $21.5k w 35k miles on it. Great truck, haven't had any issues with it yet and drive all over VA, NC and SC with it. The 4 wheel drive works great in the snow too. I've done a couple of minor mods (backup camera, led fog lights). Yup, it's 'outdated' but compared to others and is in need of a redo in the states, the price is a steal and honestly, a truck should be a truck, not a caddy with so many bells and whistles its like driving a space shuttle. They seem to have worked all the bugs from when they did the 2nd gen design in 2005 with very minor updates, as stated, like the bluetooth, dual climate control, etc. I would have bought a 2018 Taco ext cab 4wd SR5 but that was more stripped down and the price on that was $27k.

When I saw this video posted, I said to myself “great, a nice no nonsense truck!” Then I watched it and you said the same things. Haha. The Frontier is great in my opinion. It’s not the prettiest, most luxurious, best riding or best handling truck out there, but it still looks good and gets the job done by doing what it was meant to do. I wish it had keyless access, and the safety tech, but it takes ya back to a time when trucks were trucks. I’m sure the next Frontier will have all the updated tech though. I agree with you about the color, it’s sharp! Great seeing this video!

I own this truck (a 2017 manual) and I love it. It's actually my 2nd Frontier, so I'm obviously a fan of this truck. It is BY FAR the best midsize truck option because of its proven reliability and capability, as well as just easy to use simplicity. Perhaps most importantly, the Frontier doesn't cost a fortune like its 3 competitors, which each have issues. I paid $32k otd for my truck, which is at least $7k less than a comparable Taco or GM twin, and the Ranger is even more absurdly priced than those. The Frontier is the only midsize truck I would own right now.

At 18:49 you mentioned a very important differentiating feature of the VQ40 5 Speed tune. "It does NOT short change shifts and gets every bit of rev out" This is because this engine/trans tune was done way back in the days BEFORE oems were pressured by the EPA and CAFE goals. Yes this was before adaptive learning transmission that like to shift early, kill torque, or search gears endlessly (looking at you toyota) to get a couple extra MPG's. This transmission unlike the GM/Toy has NORMAL shift behaviors and is reliable. The Ranger might be the first modern transmission that offers good performance but it costs 10K more to get the features that this Pro 4X has. Plus it offers a MT. So IMO, both the 5 speed and MT offer decent performance on the Nissan. With the Tacoma, only the MT offers good performance. Their 6 speed auto is a hot mess. GM quit making the MT this year and only offers the problematic 8 speed that can shudder and have torque convertor failures. Yes there is yet another fluid fix for that but I have my doubts as for the longevity of that transmission. Its a dud if you ask me. Plus both the GM/Toy products are now less reliable then the Nissan. This is proven with the 2018 long term reliability ratings. This is a bullet proof truck. Only the Tundra will get you this kind of bullet proof truck. And that too is an old school truck that has not been updated in years.

Just ordered a white Pro-4X - for the purpose of daily commute and overland trips. After a long discussion with me, myself, and I, torn between Tacoma TRD Pro vs Pro-4X vs ZR-2 vs new Ranger FX4 (and Yes, I've looked at Gladiator too...at $60k..that is too much for questionable quality of Jeep), I've decided I needed something that can tank through Los Angeles traffics as well as sand dunes and rocks of the Death Valley desert. FYI, I've test driven all - and have driven alot on 2017 TRD Sport from work. Winning points are as followings: 1. Dana 44 rear and locker - cant beat that! 2. Beefier Transfer case (ZR-2 one is better but ZR-2 does NOT have sunroof~!) than Tacoma. 3. Yes, Sunroof...did I mention sunroof? Nicely tucked between roof rack where I can tie down Mad Max victims 4. Bilstein shocks. Personally I prefer them over Fox because of comfort (yes i will be spending over 90% of time on paved road). Fox is good on off road, but so as Bilstein - and its way more coushier than Fox. Personally! 5. Price - its reasonable...I wouldn't call $35~37k a low price but, it sure is better than close to $45k ~ $50k for TRD Pro or ZR-2...almost $10k cheaper. 6. No non-sense infotainment system (Toyota...you listening?)...well it really doesn't have one. I don't need one from the manufacturer. I can upgrade the infotainment system myself with 7" Samsung Galaxy and root it with CyanogenMod or SlimRoms - which will perform better than ANY infotainment system out there in the market - GUARANTEED! (it will cost me about $2~300 including a bracket - and few hours tuning it). 7. Reliable - nearly 15 years of design which is unchanged allowed Nissan to work out all the bugs - sure, it still looks pretty...I guess...it's like you are still dating your girlfriend from highschool into your mid-40s...oh, wait. 8. Ride quality - Much better than Tacoma for sure. Could be as good as ZR-2 if driven properly. On par with Ranger...and anything is better than Gladiator. 4.0L engine is much more livelier than that of Tacoma. Even though Ranger and ZR-2 is smoother (on 3.6L GM), Frontier is close enough...but it gets thirsty easily I hear. Anyhoo - you cannot go wrong with any of 4 trucks mentioned above - Gladiator too...just my take on it. May the 4X4 be with you.

Good review! I've been vying for a midsize for years now. Have an suv and a year old Elantra for commuting purposes but am looking to trade it in for something more trucky. The Tacoma caught my eye early but it sits too low and it's a rough ride. The Colorado is my other choice and not entirely sold on the Ranger yet. As simple as the Frontier is, the price is attractive (maybe not on fuel) but it has the essentials I want in a truck plus a sunroof. And it looks pretty customizable if need be 👍

I feel like the cons most people list about this truck are actually the pros. It's a low tech, no-nonsense truck. That is what I love about it. If you want luxury, there are plenty of other options. If you want a "truck", the Frontier is awesome. I used to own a 2004 Armada, which was a tremendous powerhouse of a truck at $35K. Now it got popular, and you can't touch a new one under $60K after they added all the creature comforts. Nissan priced that vehicle outside what I'm willing to pay. I hope that doesn't happen to the Frontier.

These trucks are great! I had as many as 6 in my fleet of farm, ranch trucks. All Pro4X, 4 crew cabs with leather and 2 King Cabs with fabric. The leather holds up way better. All automatic transmission. They are dead reliable! No issues over the years, routine maintenance is simple, no timing belts to replace, just easy. I still look at them as I drive by the lots. Maybe get one last Pro4X before they change them. I have liked the off-road models since I bought my first one in 2001! It really is a design that is getting long in the tooth, but off-road it keeps up with the best except the Gladiator Rubicon and Colorado ZR2. All the rest only have rear lockers the same as the Pro4X but none have the Dana 44 differentials ( Gladiator has Dana differentials, but no lockers on the models other than the Rubicon, stupid if you ask me! It is basically a dedicated off road vehicle, should have rear locker). The video is well narrated and accurate, except that they do have lumbar adjustment as you have already noted in your comment, thanks. BUT! There always is one. Haha. When you are driving you very often, almost constantly, and at any speed, let go of the steering wheel TOTALLY! What are you doing? A tire fails, something pops up, your reaction time is seriously delayed. What if a kid runs out in front of you in town? Every fraction of a second counts and you are wasting almost a full second by not having at lease one hand ON the steering wheel. You are not alone in this bad habit. I call out every KZbinr that does this. I can’t even fathom why people don’t hang on to the steering wheel anymore. You are driving! Not in your living room chilling out. Driving is a serious endeavour and not to be taken lightly. You nor the fastest person alive can react faster than if you just have one hand on the wheel. You can talk with the other hand all you want. You will just be mono instead of stereo. It’s ok! Most of us watch on our pads or phones and the stereo doesn’t exactly blow you away anyways! Hahaha. So please be safe out there for you, your family, whoever’s path you may cross, and keep at least one hand on the steering wheel. Eh! Best wishes from Canada, Eh!

Seriously please keep it up! 👍 I’m 46 y.o. and looking to buy my first pickup truck and this is my 1st choice (this variant or SV or SL) over the Ridgeline. Oh I do hav a burning question- out of all the midsize trucks you’ve driven or reviewed, which would you say is most kid friendly? For example, are there any with rear seats that can lean back a little so kids can rest or sleep somewhat comfortably? And with booster seats? Thx.
@PrimeAutotainment
@PrimeAutotainment 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much, I truly appreciate it! Mmm good question! That’s tough. I can’t remember exactly how much space each truck has back there, but I think Tacoma is the smallest in terms of legroom and car seat friendliness. The Ridgeline has the softest ride and feels more like a car if that matters, it also has “stadium seats” so the backseat sits up higher relative to the front seats and gives people more visibility. I don’t believe any of them slow the backseat to recline at all unless you move to a full size Ram (not sure if anyone else does that). I really like the frontier simplicity and power train. You could probably take each one home for a night and throw the family in there to get a good feel for them. Good luck picking one!
