I have had the Macan Base (2019) now for 10 months, zero buyers remorse (almost bought Macan S). I live in Suburbs of a BIG city (Toronto) and has plenty of power, more than efficient with torque being plenty.

When my car has gone in for servicing, I've gotten either Macan, Macan S, or Cayenne as a loaner. Never thought about getting an SUV before, but I really enjoyed these loaners. If I had to point to one thing that made them most feel like Porsches, I'd say it was the steering feel. I liked both Macans more than than the Cayenne (the one that was just discontinued). And I found the 4 cyl Macan to be the most fun to drive. It seemed more playful, more tossable than the S. Granted, it didn't sound great, and absolute power was down compared to the S, and I wasn't on a track or on roads as nice as those in Mallorca. But it was more fun on the roads that I drive on. PDK good, but wish it had a manual.

The 4 cylinder Macan can still be a car guys car. Cheaper base price lets you buy options that you might not be able to afford with the V6 and is easily tuned to over 300 horsepower for less than $1200.

Sure, the Ford can reach nearly the base price of the Macan. But even then, the Ford is significantly larger and I don’t think people would cross shop a Ford ST and a Porsche. Also, badge reputation plays a big part. The people that buy a Ford ST have a bit more pride in the Ford badge than the Porsche crest. Alternatively, people that want the Porsche also want the “prestige” of the marque. But that’s just my 2 cents.

This is absolutely false, for most people. The base Macan with zero options is very well constructed and well appointed. I am planning to get one with only ACC, LCA, and 14-way seats as options, so only $5k in options, but I could live with one with zero options and really enjoy it. Still way better than the Ford, and most other small SUVs out there.

cba tiau same here, 2019 coming in May with 5K in options. LKA with LCA, ACC, memory package, ionizer (I’m in LA), heated steering and seats, etc. and no other car drives like it. Prove me wrong, because I drove the competition at the track along with the Macan. Not on a straigh road at 20mph on a test drive.

After building a four-cylinder with the appropriate options for my daughter I’m at $66,000, a far cry from a Ford Edge. The Macans Direct competition is more like a range rover evoque

I've driven both the Macan S and base Macan (2018 models), and I don't think the S is that much greater. I'm very much a driver and have owned two Panameras, but I'm planning to save the $10k to get the base Macan over the S. The base Macan still drives very well and is very fun to drive. It's false to say that people considering a 2.0 Macan don't like to drive for fun and don't enjoy good cars -- elitist and condescending, really, even though I know what you mean. I drive a car with 462 hp and enjoy that power, but hp isn't everything. And some of us do have budgets that we have to watch. And some of us won't touch another luxury car outside of Porsche, feeling that the others aren't worth all that money. I know numerous car fanatics that just can't spend more than $50k on a car; I know considerably more such fanatics personally than I know fanatics who can spend $100k (or even $70k) on a car. What I *am* willing to spend $10k more for is a Macan E-Hybrid! Can't wait til that comes out; I'll be one of the first in line to get one.

Exactly my dad just got a 2019 Macan 2.0 fully loaded just because he doesn’t need all that power and in Italy you have to pay € for cars with more than 250hp

I bought a new 2018 base Macan 2.0 turbo. I started to have some buyer's remorse over not buying the S. I went to my dealer and drove the S. It did not feel materially better, or faster than my 2.0 Macan. I'm guessing the reason might be that for all that extra money the S is only about 1 second faster than the 2.0 from 0-60.

The ford edge ST is probably overpriced and I would rather spend the extra 12K to get the Porsche minus the multitude of options that will almost double the price...lol!

The 2L is still a very capable car. After spec-ing some essential specs the price will no longer be “cheap”. There are some reviews going around regarding the 2L 2019 Macan that it sounds better then the one before and the new 3L sounds not as good as the out going model. But of course, from a stand still the 3L delivers power better.

So after 3 years of living with a fully loaded base, I have to say its a fantastic car. I have other performance vehicles that are insanely fun to drive, but come on folks this is an SUV. If you cant afford two cars and need an SUV and need a very fast 0 to 60 , get the S or Turbo. I will say, I have driven both of those and in city driving I prefer the base, so quick and nimble but lacking sound. No regrets

I forgot to mention I got a Macan GTS a couple months ago and f-ing love it. It makes me want to go and get another Porsche. I do think if I thought about it longer I may have gotten the Cayenne because I need a little more room and a trailer hitch. That said, this thing cruises at 90 with a 400 plus pound motorcycle hanging off the back and you don't even know it's there. so whatever model you buy make sure you get the air suspension

Like it. Just a shame it’s not the 300bhp Golf R variant of the engine. I’d be happy to give us the V6 in this type of car to get the economy but it needs a little more grunt given its weight.

I'm a car guy but not a CAR guy, if that makes sense. So while I can appreciate the difference between a Q5 and the Macan, I am definitely more inclined to spend ~$60K for the base Macan instead of ~$70K for the S. So here's my question: would you say that acceleration / power in the base Macan is similar to the Q5? I'm assuming handling in the Macan is better....thanks and love your reviews.

Honestly, it is easy to find lightly used examples of high dollar vehicles. A lot of people that buy expensive vehicles have more than one and don’t put that many miles on them. Find a low milage one in near perfect condition and let the other guy pay for the depreciation. That way you can have the Porsche at Ford prices.

I have done this too... bought a Panamera three years after the first buyer bought it new for $98k, and I paid about $60k less for it with CPO warranty and probably enjoyed it as much as he did

My Macan would’ve been 70k with its fully loaded options..I bought it for 39k only 2 years old at 28k miles.

The Edge ST line costs in Germany 50000 Eur and he Macan S costs 61700 Eur. This is for the base configuration. So i think the Macan is priced differently (less Margin) in the States and therefor a much better deal than in Europe.

Simple answer is Porsche Macan provides prestige and bragging rights the Ford Edge does not. Especially, to your less well healed friends and associates. My guess is very few of those who can afford the Porsche will even test drive the Edge no matter how well it compares to the Macan.

Heard it uses the new q5 engine. Sad porsche should stay where they are and should not come down. Rather they should work on fixing the engine leaks, transmission problems etc. As in make it more sturdy and durable and not get into rat race.

In my opinion if your a soccer parent and your schlepping around kiddies and really are not a car man or gal then i guess the 4 cylinder is adequate. Me, I love to drive and like a car with power to spare and am willing to pay extra for it. But some people it doesn't excite them and I guess can understand that perspective also. I think 4 cylinder cars are a compromise to some degree to try and get performance as well as fuel economy!

Same price as an ST Edge? Yeah, because everyone who buys a base model Porsche loads it up with absolutely nothing, right? Or do they add a third of the MSRP in upgrades and optionals? Any company that can charge $600 to supply the standard key fob in a different colored plastic is laughing all the way to the Kings new clothes bank... just my POV (ex Porsche owner).

not right, Richard Dunn... I'm ordering base Macan 2019 and adding in options under $5k that enhance driving, like blind-spot warning, adaptive cruise control, 14-way power seats (which include heated front seats with lumbar support and power-telescoping steering wheel, etc.), and windshield (non-air) heater. Yes, there are cheaper cars with these things standard, but you don't get the driving dynamics that you get with a Macan. So it's false that you have to add on $10k or $15k or $20k in options. And I've test-driven a base Macan and a Macan S, and I don't find the difference to be that great like MotoMan says; if you want to go really fast really quickly, I think you don't so much as get a larger motor as that you go for a sports car over an SUV.

It is understandable that both Ford and Porsche tries to expand their customer base and increase their market share by providing a wider range of models in small enough increments as to not turn away their existing customers. Fast Fords are not something new, and they are often popular with car people although they don't infer status. Economy variations of Porsche is more of a balancing act because they need to be considerably more expensive than the VW and Skoda models they share platform with in order to uphold the Porsche brand status. At the same time the Porsche must avoid to appear overpriced by comparison so the finish and driving dynamics must be superior.

Perhaps a more interesting thing to ponder is whether the Audi Q5 or the base Macan is the better buy. They have the same engine and same MLB architecture and are probably within 10% in price.

I would not have flown across the pond to drive that 4 cyl. A new GTS or Turbo maybe. On top of it, the efficient thing you keep mentioning... it’s not. Virtually the same mpg city and highway because of the weight that engine has to strain to move.

I own a 2016 MB 250 GLA that has a 2.0 Turbo. (I think of it at a big Golf GTI Almost R w/ awd) A Macan with a 2.0T at 49K. I had hopes it would come down to GLA pricing as I love Porsche. But 49K is stupid. I bet they end up leasing for $375/mo.

Ferry Porsche clearly disagreed....The very first Porsche (356) used a VW 4 cylinder engine....the early 911 had 4 cylinder engine...and the 912....and the 914......and the 924....and the 944....and the current 718 Cayman and Boxster (granted they are Porsche’s own flat 4’s) so 4 cylinder engines are actually very much in Porsche’s DNA
