@kenmaruska58185 жыл бұрын
I think you are right about range but it's so tied to assist level, average speed, terrain, rider weight, etc. I think that 95% of all ebikes fall in the range of 10-20wh / km so why not just state that for the standard battery and optional batteries. The industry seems to still want to hide range facts from all potential customers but the range is what it is and it's not bad in my opinion. I do think anyone wanting to do say 50km or more per day should look for batteries as high as 1kwh. I would love for someone that does reviews get the facts right on the good / bad for both mid drive and hub drive motor. If you know the facts it becomes clear that mid drives have a technical advantage if you cummute ride and spend a good % of your riding time over 15-20mph. Mid drives really shine on mtn bikes because the weight is centered and does not impact the unsprung weight of the wheel if there is a suspension. Most of the marketing $s seems to go into trying to convince very buyer that a mid drive is best regardless of how the rider plans to utilize the bike and that is just not TRUTHFUL.

I received the front and rear racks for my 5 week old 2019 Rad Rover yesterday and installed them both a few hours later. I live on the high Mojave Desert and ride my bike in the remote surrounding area which consists of a lot of deep sand. I'm an old guy in my 80's and I can honestly say that this bike is about the best piece of machinery I've ever bought. It's engineered and put together with a lot of intelligence and fine craftsmanship... The bike runs like a charm and I've had zero problems with it.

Stumbled on this review after I had already pulled the trigger on a 2019 Radrover. Excellent review and about the most unbiased one at that. I have been away from any type of biking for many years and have decided an eBike a perfect way to get back into it. I'm 70 and retired, in need of a fun way to exercise. When I started my online comparisons and visiting many different local shops (i live in north San Diego County) I ran into 4 letters that struck fear in my heart...MSRP...At that moment, I said to myself "Ahh! buying a new bicycle is exactly like buying a new car." 95% of the shops I visited had particular makes and models that were "the best you can buy." The only difference I saw was bicycles instead of cars. All of these "shady salespersons" were your best friends as long as you buy their product. I visited one store selling a model for 4k. A different shop across town selling the exact same make and model for 3.2k on sale. So typical. I own a 2018 Nissan Frontier that I paid 21k for. Is it the best truck out there? Hardly. Could I have bought a fully loaded Ford Raptor for 60k? Maybe. I think you see where I'm going with this. It's all about what the consumer considers good value for their money. I love my truck and it will do everything a more expensive truck will do. I'll tie down my Radrover in the bed and off I go to new adventures. And trust me, the money I saved will finance a crapton of adventures. You save quite a bit by buying direct and eliminating the middlemen. Sure, a 1.5k bike won't be as nice as a higher end one, but the tradeoffs are well worth it...IMO!

I have a 2019 Radrhino which is the European version with mudguards and and a rack included for eur1699. Delivery to Spain was fast, 4 days. Assembly easy. Bought bike to replace local car journeys. We live in a mountainous area and the local villages are joined by tracks/gravel fire roads. I'm 5'10" and my wife is 5'2". She has no problem riding the bike. I was concerned that the advice in the manual was to use power assist level 2/3 for steep hills. However, I have found it has no problem delivering 750w in level 5 on steep hills - from 10-15% gradient. I put my hand on motor after and it was only slightly warm to the touch. 750w seems like a reasonable compromise. I would like to go up hills a bit faster, but then I don't want the extra weight and cost of a bigger battery.

Wow...what a fair and unbiased review! So many ebike reviews make me wonder if some kind of kickback is happening. Where they go over the features but the only negative thing said is that the kickstand should be in the back rather than in the middle. This reviewer did not hold back on on the legit negatives. Thank you! I did ride this bike and did not like the stiffness in steering. Probably because of the fat tires. So before you order any fat tire bike ...try one out before you order one. The sweet spot for me is 2 to 3 inch wide tires for riding all the great trails that are so popular.

I have the 2020 radrover 5 and enjoy it very much. The factory/retail support is exceptional. My bike had a little glitch where it would lose power seemingly at random. Rad sent me a replacement controller, throttle, display and battery tray - all items that their tech team thought might be related to the fault. No charge for any of it. This kind of support is rare in my experience. So if you are a buyer that needs/wants good support for your bike then I recommend Rad power bikes.

My 2019 radwagon that I ride a tough paper route with every night had the main bearing in the motor fail at around 2900 miles. Except for their support being a little slow due to the Covid situation, they receive a solid four out of five stars from me . They are shipping me the entire rear wheel with the motor , brake disk, freewheel, all laced with spokes and ready to go. They also said I should just keep the old wheel for parts . I was also having a throttle issue , but as I was removing f the old rear drivetrain I discovered a damaged cable which I soldered a severed wire solving it. Anyway cudos to rad power support. you don't have to suffer/put up with the limitations/inconvenience of the shifter location/operation "issue"....simply swap the location of the shifter for the brake clamp location....you will need to grind/file a bit off the top (one side) of the brake clamp but that's easy....when you're done the shifter will be right tight to the throttle body...so you won't have to move your hand to shift anymore (big improvement)...rear brake application will now be a 2-3 finger operation but that works fine. I have a RadCity and a RadMini. I did that mod to both bikes....as well as crazy-gluing little "buttons" to the up/down arrows of the PAS pad (little furniture bumpers or kitchen cabinet door stops)....makes changing PAS level easier and more deliberate. To get the most out of these bikes you have to shift gears and change pedal assist levels a lot...sometimes together...just like a vehicle/truck with two transmissions. And on top of that this one has two engines! LOL

Replaced my Radrover 2018 motor with a real 750W motor from Bafang. You can see the difference in the magnet size and the performance, what comes stock from Radpower bikes is what I would call a "lower tier" 750W motor or a 500W motor overclocked to 750W. I imagine they do this for two reasons. 1) To keep the cost down. 2) To make it easier to sell one motor to multiple countries with different motor power limits at the same price. In Canada they can control the motor output to be at 500W from just the controller software but also sell the exact same motor in the States and have it function as a 750W motor. America gets the short end of the stick.
@skip123davis5 жыл бұрын
hey steve, thanks for posting that! how much hassle and money is it to r&r the motor? is it REALLY worth the roi? i mean, realistically, i've been riding liter class motorcycles for 30 years, and i'm having trouble getting enthused about hot rodding an already acceptable bike. for what: a teeny bit more acceleration and no higher top speed? meh...
@smckinnon5 жыл бұрын
@@skip123davis Yeah its a great question. I wouldn't upgrade the motor by itself. What I would recommend is upgrading the motor (aliexpress has a few options) and upgrading the controller to the one that Bolton sells. Combined you get a bike with much more torque and higher top speed. Sounds like Kyle is going to do a video on this exact thing in the future. For me what was important was going faster and accelerating faster. I have a pretty large commute, so if I can shave 10 mins off one way every day I'm sold. It cost me around $400 for the two upgrades. There's also some additional benefits, the controller Bolton sells has way more options on how to customize how the motor functions, also a temp sensor and cruise control! The controller upgrade is plug and play, the motor is also pretty straight forward but getting the freewheel off can be a little tricky. Goto electricbikereview.com forums in the Rad power bikes section you'll find these upgrades discussed in detail. I also upgraded my battery to a 52V 17.5Ah battery. It hot rods it to a new level. Couldn't be happier. I don't always run it at max speed, but if you want too you have that option which is nice. Also having the additional torque allows you to quickly escape dangerous situations, like cars running reds or hairy intersections.

I just would like to add my two cents to your great review. I bought a rover . it hopped all over the place and I found the tire bead on both tires was not seated. So I took the wheels off put some dish soap around the bead and pumped it up to 85 pounds to get them to seat but in doing so one of the tires came off the rim due to the X excess of air pressure and soap. I finally got them seated and then immediately got a small puncture after riding for 10 minutes. The tube is very thin as is the tire and I am probably going to have to buy better tires and tubes. Just thought you might want to know

Full disclosure, I have already bought one, and I am just waiting for it to be delivered, but I would like to see what you think of it. I've been watching all sorts of ebike videos on KZbin, everything from reviews from pro's like you to individuals who decided to document their unboxing and first rides of their ebikes, all sorts and models of ebikes. I learned two things from those videos #1 - No one reads the instructions before putting their bike together. No one. If it is important that the customer does a certain thing in a certain order - put that instruction on a separate piece of paper and tape it to that specific part. and #2 - The most commonly used phrase among those posting ebike videos is "This is fun!" I'm hoping I will feel the same way when my bike gets here in a few days.

So what was the solution to the disconnected cable? Basic omission from the review
@DJaquithFL5 жыл бұрын
What would have been great is to see you actually fix the problem especially if it's a problem that others have had. Otherwise great information. 😊👍

you dont fix rad rovers you warranty them
@DJaquithFL5 жыл бұрын
@@xmateinc 5:30 Did you even watch the video?! It was a disconnected cable and if he's getting some of them shipped that way it would be asinine to ship the bike back for something so damn simple as reconnecting a loose cable.

The slick tires on the 20" black fat bike on the left? Where can those be purchased. Thank you...

An honest review? Just remember any design is a compromise between performance, functionality and cost. You mentioned a few things as poor or low end. For example the display. Yes it is simple and can have one with more features, but the cost would be higher. I think the RAD bikes have found a sweet point between cost and functionality. I spend some time in you web page and maybe you have "better performance bikes" but the cost is inaccessible to most people.

Have you ever heard of the Himiway Cruiser? It's very similar to this Rad Rover.

I just ordered a color screen + controller from you for my Rad Rover, but a minor quibble with this review, the stock controller does have some configuration modes. You said it doesn’t, but you can adjust the maximum speed based on your local rules/laws and adjust for tire size.

I'm new to e-Bikes, but I really like my 2019 RadRover so far. Your packaging was in much better shape than mine. My main box had a few holes gouged into it, and the internal "mystery box" was split open, so all its items had fallen into the main box. Fortunately nothing was missing and nothing was damaged.

Thanks for sharing! It's hard to rate packaging based on one bike.

I'm so torn between RadRover and Himiway. I'm looking for something I can ride on trails with but get good distance (with pedal assist). I seen another review of the Himiway, and the battery seemed to have used half its life in 18 minutes (regardless of distance, that's not long - it was uncut footage). Then was leaning toward the RadRover, but seeing some stuff that is not appealing (bumpier ride...etc). In your opinion, which one is better? Looking for distance battery life and a less bumpy ride (I understand that bumpiness will happen, just don't want to feel every little bump).

Have you looked at the internal components of the electric motor? Maybe the claimed 750 in a 350 size factor is attributable to better/strong internal components like neodymium magnets instead of cheaper but larger ferrous ones?

I am holding out for something comparable to a fat tire 2-wheel drive dual-battery RadWagon suitable for touring and off-road with a comfortable saddle for a 77 year-old with a bad back - am I asking too much?
@Area13ebikes5 жыл бұрын
Hey Harley Neal! Nope, you're not asking too much. Check out The Bolton 2020 Bikes. We can always upgrade the saddle.

Would be nice to categorise the points system compared to the price say $600, 1000 1500 2000 then people could compare bikes in a certain price bracket.

What would be a good choice of rear motor, fat tire bike at the $1500 max? Mainly one with a real 750 watt motor. Not a 500 watt labeled at 750 watt.

Base it on the inseam not height because people have different proportions.

I like the 9 point evaluation. I think Rad should use inseam, not rider height for their fit specs. I have a 2018 Rover, am 5'8" with a 31" inseam, and find mine just on the edge of being too tall for me.

Thanks for the input!

i agree: i'm same height and inseam. i'm built like a dachshund 😑 i wear a 44R suit, but have to roll up the armsleeves and pantlegs. it's why i can't ride a KLR650 (as much as i would like to) without throwing my hip out. i finally gave up.

I am 6’2 with a 31” inseam and agree.
@TWDay-sy6nq5 жыл бұрын
I'm 5'9" with a 29" inseam and it's on the edge of too tall for me. I suspect the range of "too tall" depends as much on physical condition, rider skill, and attitude as it does anything objective. Skip, I rode a KLR650 for a few years until I "stepped down" to a Yamaha WR250X. Never threw out a hip, but I did get a fake one when I turned 64. At 71, eyesight is going to take me off of the motorcycle before the seat height does the job.
