My dad only drives BMW tourings and we where forbidden to eat in the car. Drinks out of these spill free sports bottles where okay, but for everything else we stopped and sat down outside on a picnic table. He didn’t had a problem with loosing half an hour on a roadtrip, to make sure his cars stayed nice and clean. I retrospectively very much respect this decision and learned to take proper care after my cars from an early age on. Hell I even liked washing his car in the driveway after he taught me and every repair he made, he got my out in the garage and made me do a minor thing like tightening a bolt etc, to learn about car maintenance. I’m so grateful for this! The knowledge I gathered was just standard for me and it took me years to understand why people bring their cars to a dealership to do the maintenance when it’s so easily done by yourself and a 10 year old kid.

This reminds me of this old Zizek anecdote about the authoritative father: The traditional father is the subaru Impreza; yes, it is brutal, it punishes you for doing bad things, but it lets you do them, perhaps out of spite. The permissive, postmodern father is the Ascent; "ohhhh yeahhh sureee you can be an inconsiderate father with the WRX, but why not use me, with my forced hypermiling and my cupholders, and my sovereignty for children, because it'd be the right thing to do?" It actively takes out the element of rebellion from its traditional counterpart in lieu of a superficial sense of permissiveness; the result is that you are even more trapped in your life's inertial forces than before, and have no choice to say "NO, this is NOT what I stand for!"

I worked at a Subaru body shop when these came out, and worked on one that got rear-ended hard, a month after they drove it off the lot. They're built well, and they're packed with safety features. Not my favorite SUV/minivan-adjacent crossover, but still a great car (even with the CVT, add that to a turbo and it was pretty fun).

My family always drives Subarus. I trust Subaru with my life because last year my family and i were in our 2017 Outback Limited 2.5 and we were T-Boned hit on the passenger side by a Nissan Titan half ton truck while he was going 45 MPH. we walked away from the crash with not a scratch. the truck was totaled and the driver was injured. Our Outback was repaired and looks good as new. Good job Subaru!.

The QUENTESSENTIAL Regular Car Review! A perfect example of why I first subscribed years ago, went back and watched every review from the first Dodge Caravan, was so frustrated with the style departure that took hold while you all were reviewing cars in Europe (forcing me to seek solace in Doug DeMuro vids), why I am so dissapointed whenever 6:00am Monday rolls around and a new video hasn't been uploaded yet, and why I am convinced that channels like Donuts write the way they do (as if inspired by you). THIS, gentlemen, is what makes you great. Keep up the great work. I will be watching.

I have a 2018 crosstrek with the manual and it does that same throttle hang thing (as did my previous '14 Crosstrek). IT SUCKS SO MUCH. Either you shift fast and every shift is jerky and unpleasant for your passengers, or you shift it like its a 1970s truck and wait 5 seconds between gears and piss off everybody behind you who has the attention span of a fruit fly. I am told there are aftermarket ECU options that eliminate that, and I plan to look into them because DANGIT.
@oneopinion68066 жыл бұрын
This is breaking my heart! I had to trade in my 2014 Outback MT (yes it had some rev-hang but I forgave it for the 6th gear and the fact that it was a big 'ol wagon) so the better half could roll a 2015 Outback CVT and what with the Forester giving up the MT this year my main contender as fallback for when I am unsuccessful in my bid for WRX indeed being a reasonable blend of dad-fun MT with space for kids/crap was to go Crosstrek. I get that thing isn't exactly built to be ripping it up, but I was hoping it'd at least give me some rowing enjoyment. Here's to hoping your quest for mod-fix is fruitful.
@NFSCalex6 жыл бұрын
My 2012 Hyundai Veloster's manual transmission sucks like that too. Its nanny ECU will bog down 2nd gear hard, and sometimes it won't even go into gear at all from 1-2, all for fuel economy I suppose.
@asaturn6 жыл бұрын
The "throttle hang" can be tuned out with an ECU remap/tune, the throttle is completely drive by wire. You can also change the throttle response so it doesn't stop at 80% throttle (which most newer cars are set around) and goes to 100%. Did this on my '08 WRX and it made it feel much faster and responsive.

That throttle lag is even worse in my Crosstrek, at least they put a turbo in this suv. BUT, it's a AWD compact SUV that I get 40 on the highway and has really low maintenance cost, so I try not to complain too much that it's also the slowest production vehicle you can buy today. But that's Subaru, you learn to love it because it makes you responsible, like a strict parent who doesn't let you do anything fun.

Replaced the CVT in our outback (2010) at 96k miles. Dealer said 2010-2015 have a higher failure rate. Not to mention some models of the 2.0 and 2.5 had some oil consumption issues. Having these appear sub 100k miles dosent impress me much. I passed on an impreza because of that.

Before I bought my 2014 Forester XT, I had only owned Chrysler/Mitsubishi vehicles, DSM or otherwise. I thought that all new cars came half broken and that all dealer service centers were awful, dirty and filled with people that tolerate their job, barely. Though I've never had to have the Forester "repaired," regular maintenance at the dealership is met with a giant espresso machine, smiling faces, complimentary car washes and SICSA dogs and cats running around, available for adoption. Owning a Subaru is pretty great.

Bakery Wizard the fact that new cars are made to be profitable for the manufacturers, rather than fun, stylish, or reliable. The laundry list of recalls on stuff that has been available for less than a year is testament to that fact. The only industry that can have as many recalls as automotive and still stay afloat is modern medicine.
@Bartonovich526 жыл бұрын
Cars don’t last long because they are reliable. They last long because of their retained value. The high retained value of Honda Odysseys and Subarus Imprezas means that their owners will replace defective transmissions (rampant on the Odyssey) or blown head gaskets (bad on the Impreza) rather than scrapping them like a Ford Windstar or a 1990s Eagle Talon with the same problem. Retained value isn’t based on quality or reliability. It’s based on how easy it is to finance a new car and how many are on the used market. Most loans for Subarus are short term and high interest... and they are almost never leased or fleet vehicles. The depreciation on Chrysler vehicles was so bad that they actually stopped leasing for a few years to correct it. But you look at an Impreza that’s been parked outside for a decade, modded, and beat to shit.... and it’s going be less reliable than the garage kept perfectly maintained low mile 2002 PT Cruiser which was owned by a retired couple

I worked at a Subaru Dealership when we first just got these in, and of course one of them was incorporated as a service loaner which we were allowed to use when we went out for lunch. This is Subaru's redemption model for the disaster known as the Tribeca, which looks as ugly as a Pontiac Aztek on the outside, and a bubbly 2000s spaceship on the inside. The Tribeca has a load of features including heated *and* cooling seats, three row seating with captain's chairs in the second row, dozens of cupholders, this car just screams "Family SUV" and while it's a bit large for my taste, I like it.

As a Subaru employee I was waiting on this review... Its honestly a fun car to drive as it is pretty quick and with Subaru getting rid of the Forrester xt as of 2019 it's great that they have a new turbocharged suv. But I feel bad for all the Subaru Porter's that are gonna get slammed at work with these for the next week cause of your video. Good stuff guy. Good stuff.

@kenneth-ke fields "Its honestly a fun car to drive as it is pretty quick " I'll admit 6.9 seconds to 60 for a near-4500 pound SUV is pretty quick, but I cannot think of why you'd want 6.9 seconds to 60 in something so huge, so completely and totally numb and isolated in so many ways. That's not fun to me, that's just a slight glimmer of hope in the dullness that is the rest of its performance.

@kenneth-kye fields "Sometimes that take off at a stop light is all you need to keep you from playing Houdini on your future child." That's hilariously unfortunate, but I get that. It ticks all the boxes the little shit-tornadoes need, and if having another less practical fun vehicle isn't an option, then having a little speed in this thing that makes moms/dads enjoy a sliver of the drive is alright. I still don't think it makes the rest of the driving experience particularly fun, but I can see someone whose eyes have turned completely backwards from hearing 3rd row/cupholder/infotainment buzzwords about every car they've seen all day actually perk up a bit at driving this and have a 'oh shit... this is a plus' reaction to a sub-7 second 60 time/shove compared to other similar SUV's, and positive emotion is a good selling point in a sea of 'I don't really want it in principle, but I kinda need it in reality...' vans and SUV's, imo.
