Although not available yet, we know that the upcoming TRD version of the RAV won't add much in terms of off-road ability. It's more of a styling package on the RAV4. Still, this is all the off-road ability 90% of CUV shoppers will ever need.

Seems like a missed opportunity and diluting the trd name. Would it really be that hard to have a different intake, exhaust, and tune to make maybe 15 more hp/tq, as well as give a better departure angle, a front skid plate, as well as the tires. Hell go even further add a rear diff skid plate and you'll have a vehicle with 95% of the stock jeeps capability.

The upcoming Trd package actually comes with different spring and damping package that is to provide more wheel travel over the current adventure model. The wheels get a decrease in diameter while being wrapped with all-terrain tires that have taller sidewalls for more impact absorption and flex. One thing I'd like to note that I didn't hear mentioned in your review and in most other reviews, is that the adventure trim does come with a softer tuned suspension package compared to the rest of the lineup. I own an adventure and absolutely love the driving dynamics of this vehicle especially in the sport mode. Great review as always Alex, keep up the good work!

@@bern9067 for me it’s not about off-roading. It’s about the grill on the “adventure” model looking better than the grill on every other model. of course Toyota Rav4 wont dethrone the 4 runner. But all generation Rav4 were very capable. First Gen at some insane departure angles for offoading, some claim it is the best offroading Rav4 because of those departure angles and weight. I had a 3rd Generation, that was a tank. It snowed in Canada 15 inches, all the car were getting stuck. My Rav4 went out in that deep snow with the trucks. They are extremely versatile units, and New Generation is getting over 30mpg and has torque vectoring. It is an impressive direction for the Rav4. Mine saved me many harsh winters. I would buy one again.

I’m waiting for delivery of my Adventure, or Trail as they’ve called it here in Canada. I’ve had a Subaru, Tiguan and an AWD Lexus. They’ve all served me well. I live 35 km out of town on seriously nasty roads, then up a steep, twisty, canted hill road. I’m confident the Trail will be fine. If I needed more muscle, I’d buy a truck or serious off roader. Thanks Alex for all your helpful reviews.

Right Lane Hog It was a choice between the CRV and the RAV. I try to buy Canadian when I can and both are good vehicles. Then again, other manufactures have only just caught with (and some cases, past) Subaru S-AWD system this year (within the price range of 8k).

Maybe someday that will change. I like the look of this adventure model but when we can the wife says we need a van. Van's are practical but probably not as fun. Six weeks ago I took a Forester base model out for a drive, about five months ago sat in a new Rav4, the Rav4 felt a bit tight inside compared to the Forester, but I still liked it. Between the three my first pick would be the Forester, but I picked another option and leased an Outback base model for a little less. I don't off road more than a rare trip down a dirt path that even a front wheel drive CUV could handle. My reason for having AWD is snow, our winters on the shore of lake Erie can be very difficult.

I am inclined to disagree slightly. I have taken mine to "that next level of capability". It's called aftermarket parts. Installed a 2" lift kit and a metal skid plate from TORQ Engineering. Installed a tow hook through my local custom shop. Put beefier tires. My Rav has been rutting, mudding, crossed streams and climbed super rocky hills; almost everything just shy of rock crawling. It is very possible. Know your vehicle and understand it's limitations and purchase a few aftermarket parts and you can pull out some amazing stuff in a TRD. It does not have to be just a soft trail vehicle. Do not buy a Jeep or you will Just Empty Every Pocket.

A 2015-2018 AWD Rav4 with a lift and tires is a very very capable vehicle. A 2019 AWD Rav4 with a lift and tires is also very very capable. If you want to be different on the trails, get one. It will also last forever. I drive a 2015 Forester now but my next rig will definetely be a Rav4. A hybrid Rav4 should stay in the city tho.

Does anyone know how this handles on the sand? Looking for a beach driving SUV but would not want to shell out over 40k for the 4Runner.

How can a 203 hp, 4 cylinder RAV4 even come close to the price of a genuine, 4X4 4Runner? The LE #Hybrid is the best choice in the RAV4 lineup by a mile. It is relatively cheap to buy, cheap to run and offers more than enough AWD capability to travel through its natural territory of suburban malls, suburban boulevards and suburban driveways. If Toyota really wants to compete with the Cherokee it needs to offer the power of a V6 with an upgraded undercarriage to match. Having said all that, the Adventure will probably sell like hotcakes to image unconscious consumers.

"Not a MIni-4Runner" - and doesn't mention the 4Runner in the entire video :( I wanted to know what the 4Runner has that the Rav4 does not regarding Off Road traction technology. And in practical terms, not just the spec sheet at toyota.com

Cool vid I appreciate the fact that you guys are testing less obvious vehicles. I love big trucks and SUVs but don't love the mpg. The Rivian is not a real thing and most likely too expensive for me for at least the next 3 -5 years so do you have any suggestions for actually capable off road vehicles that don't need to be filled up every 10 seconds. Also very aware of Subarus but looking for anything else out there old or new. Thanks!

We are renting an Adventure for all of next week, (Vacation) We just picked it up today but have not really driven it yet. It seems nice enough and the seats are pretty comfortable. I wish they had a Heads Up Display' though. I am still not sure WHY the Adventurer can pull more then the other RAV4's. Same Engine (2.5L) and Transmission (8 speed)...Correct?

Right Lane Hog It’s not just an issue of the engine. The suspension, frame and transmission would need to be able to do that. Plus, it’s still a front-biased vehicle. That tongue weight would reduce front wheel traction at higher speeds when the rear disconnects.

Doesn't need 19 inch wheels. An 18 inch option if not a 17 option would have been much usable option if it sees off roading. Dont know if there was a option to choose a different wheel and tire combo from the factory or not.

The Crosstrek costs less, or the new all wheel drive Prius for better gas mileage and uglier. I would buy an old Jeep Cherokee with an inline 6 engine for real off road use, and modify it. I would not want to scratch and dent a newer vehicle off road. Better tires and plastic or steel tire chains can help with not getting stuck. The CX-5 looks and steers better than the RAV4. Car & Driver has a good article comparing the 2019 RAV4 and CX-5.

I own a 07 RAV. The "all wheel drive" is not that capable. Okay in the snow, but not much else. My vehicles must have 3500 lbs or better towing capability, so that will be a factor in deciding what I purchase. The new one with an improved 4WD system is worth considering. It does look nicer than the previous model.

You can definitely take the Rav4 adventure more off the road than just a gravel road. I have a Pontiac vibe and i have gone down 2 tracks with it. Driving is limited by the driver and the car... I also would not trust a jeep any farther than i could push it cause jeep has so many electrical problems now days.
