In case you are in the market for a lightly used 19 Rav4 as I was, just wanted to share my buying experience. I was mostly sold on 19 RAV4 on paper. Great reliable 2.5l four cylinder w decent gas mileage. Good looks. No problematic cvt for a transmission, just a reliable standard mechanical transmission and no problem turbo involved. And I liked the new styling much better than the old. Then I test drove an xle and a limited. The test drive was horrible because of all the road noise at highway speeds. Not only did I have a problem with it but so did my wife. What we have to compare to is our 2017 Sorento sxl. It in comparatively very quiet in the cabin traveling on same stretch of hwy as our test drives. So we moved away from the Rav4. We ended up buying a 19 CX-5 grand touring which was very quiet on the highway, has similar mechanical reliability, plus gave us way more features than equivalent priced Rav4- android auto, leather, auto high beams, leds all way around, 19" wheels, and it drives great.

'Glad I checked here. The first '19 RAV4 review I read elsewhere (not a video) described acceleration simply as "slow," rear seat room as "cramped," and quality of interior materials as "cheap." It makes me wonder how many people will be swayed by their apparent negative bias. Thanks, Alex, for your even-handed, methodical, and extremely-thorough reviews.

Looks like they decided to cut the approach angles on the standard model compared to the last generation. That was the one thing the Rav4 had going for it. The front end cladding was sloped in a way which would allow you to clear and climb large mounds of snow. This generation's bottom skirts would just break in the snow/ice. That said, the overall clearance is 2" higher, so that's a very good development.

Dennis W A problem with all late models Toyotas is elimination of transmission fluid dipstick and need to have a lift i.e. repair shop to change fluid. Do not care what Toyota says trans fluid must be changed periodically. Waiting to 100k a mistake. Ex. After towing season or off roading or after heavy loads. My CRV is easiest vehicle to maintain with near 200k and only routine maintenance. 2nd gen CRV hard to surpass. 32mpg hwy. Honda 2018 designs horrible. Turbos out. This 2019 RAV4 hybrid design finally may do it, but will wait until 2020.

Honda with their CR-V had this segment owned for years after taking it away from Ford's Escape. Honda tried a leap forward to keep the segment by coming out with a turbo. I don't know of any car makers who have not had reliability issues moving to turbos. You could see Honda's troubles as forced by the competitive pressure from Toyota. Toyota owns the segment now and will be tough to dislodge. In six years, the next RAV-4 may be all electric.

Also, instead of just giving cargo area sq footage, it would be helpful to give actual measurements, depth x width, both with rear seats up and down. People like to camp with these and like to know if they can sleep in back with seats folded down.

@hlcepeda 6 жыл бұрын
NVH is definitely a big deal for me. These are pre-production models. I've watched at least one other video that actually showed an engine hood with insulation, so I''m hoping that Alex's observation re noise was just due to the lack of insulaton in the RAV4 he drove.

@Norm T Most of the RAV4 reviews I've encountered so far do not give it good marks for noise. So I'm really squinting at it as far as any purchase. My expectation though is that since it's already riding on a great workable platform, it shouldn't require a huge effort by Toyota to work in the passive measures you mentioned. Whether they do that soon or not waits to be seen. In the meantime, I've been comparing vehicle dBA levels that Car & Driver report in their instrumented tests. So far, the quietest compact, non-luxury crossovers/SUVs are the Mazda CX-5 (67 dBA) and Subaru Forester (67.4 dBA); that's into luxury car territory, and those results are backed up by reviewers' driving impressions. I'll give it until mid-2019 then pull the pin on a purchase. If it ends up not being the RAV4,so be it.

@hlcepeda 6 жыл бұрын
@roadwarrior280 Hello. I can't speak to the 2018 model or the condition of the particular CX-5 you drove. I can only say that every review I've read (from Consumer Reports to R&T) says that the CX-5 is notably "quiet" (and when compared to other SUVs). That said...and going back to your experience... how loud was the overall ride in terms of wind and road noise, and how loud is the engine when you don't step on the gas hard? I think that's more or less the condition that CX-5 reviewers have been basing their conclusions on (noise at steady speed). Anyway, I totally understand your need for a quiet car; that's also my requirement... in a huge way!!

Great review and explanation of the different AWD systems. I'm curious as to why they did the torque vectoring rear axle. More for off road ability or for hammering through mountain roads? I'd have to think its the first scenario. Not many people who buy these are going to be ripping through canyons regularly. Its a Toyota and that counts for a lot but I still think a new CX-5 Turbo AWD for the same money is just more car. Too bad the space in that car is so small. They blew it there but are still selling pretty well now after all the great reviews. That car is now pretty quick with that turbo. Under 6 seconds 0-60. Mazda people asked for a turbo in that car and they got it.

Hopefully this sells well and they make an optional V6 for the 2020 model. Would consider it then as all the kinks would be worked out from the release model and a V6 would be better for towing 3500 like it says the adventure can do.

JM, I agree with you 100%, a V6 RAV4 would be an excellent option. For people who don't need a bigger, heavier, thirstier and more expensive Highlander for day to day life but still do some towing, a V6 RAV4 Adventure would be just about perfect. Tell Toyota how you feel.

@10tenman10 I 100% agree with you. The hybrid RAV4 powertrain doesn't add much to the cost of the trims where it is available (I think XSE, Limited, LE??). The Escape doesn't even have great crash test ratings in the small overlap test. Fords only sell now because the company has to put lots of money on the hood to sell the products.

Good catch. My understanding is that the RAV4s test driven so far have been pre-production models. It's likely asking for too much, but I'm hoping that tweaks to the production versions will address some of the shortcomings. Better noise isolation would be a major plus as would incorporation of Android Auto further down the line (before the 2020 version).

You have the best RAV4 ever made . I don't know if Toyota is trying to force consumers to upgrade to the V6 Highlander or simply content to sell 400,000 4 cylinder RAV4s a year but a 300 hp V6 RAV4 would be a terrific option. For folks who 'need' more power or tow occasionally but want to keep the compact dimensions, a V6 RAV4 would be nearly perfect. BTW there are still some low-mileage V6 RAV4s on the market and they seem to sell at virtually the same price as the 4 cylinder models. Lastly, as a loyal Toyota owner, you really ought to tell Toyota what features you would like in your next RAV4.

@@M1Tommy Did the tech make a low ball offer for yours? Around here I see them selling at $11-15K with only 40-60,000 miles on the odometer. That strikes me as a very reasonable price and their HWY mpg is comparable to the 4. I have a sneaking suspicion there might be a TRD RAV4 V6 in the future. As Alex and others have said, the new chassis can easily handle more power and the new AWD system would put that power down much better than the FWD V6 Camry. I am not a fan of turbo engines so the 3.5 V6 would fit the bill perfectly. Hopefully you get another 100,000 miles out of yours. #TRDRAV4

It's odd that the RAV4 is still not offered with leather upholstery. I'd welcome a turbo or V6 option. After all, the gen 3 RAV4 had a 3.5L V6, and that was a smaller vehicle. Since 1995, it's had a 2.0L I4 , and that was a subcompact with as little as 2 doors (even smaller than a CHR). Hey, it's been an EV twice too, 1997 & 2012, so you never know.
