@fukthegoog I'm not really sure they do "hate on Subaru" as so many of you guys claim. They are right in pointing out the failings of cars, Subaru or not. The biggest weakness with Subaru is the shitty tyres they recommend. No car is perfect, in our house we always have one Subaru and one bigger 4X4. Currently an Impreza and it is a cracking car to drive but there are issues with it. Biggest for us is the complete lack of engine breaking, just like every other Subaru we've owned. Living up in the hills of North Wales on twisty little roads in winter the Subaru is a tricky car going down untreated frozen steep roads but we still love it.

For the wheels though, I'll probably save the stock 19" for dedicated winter tires and get some decent off-road rubber for the summer. Wonder if 17" wheels will fit?

First, this is not comparable to a "true" 4WD vehicle--if you need a 4WD vehicle for off-roading, this isn't the good choice. That said, the 2019 RAV4 is aimed directly at competing with the Subaru Forester and Outback. Subaru should be worried. The Subies are a generally good AWD for mild backcountry use, EXCEPT that they are equipped with the unreliable and expensive to repair Jatco (owned by Nissan) CVT. Funny how no one in the auto journalism field mentions that the Subie CVT is made by the same company that builds the CVT with a horrible reputation in Nissans. With the 2019 RAV4 Adventure, Toyota has 1) made the ground clearance competitive with the Subies; 2) built an AWD system competitive with Subaru's X-Mode; 3) achieved fuel economy numbers competitive with the Outback or Forester; and 4) done all that with an automatic transmission that should be way more pleasant and reliable than Subaru's CVT. Oh, and the 2.5 Toyota 4 is a very bulletproof engine; the Subie's boxer continues to have oil consumption issues for some owners. As for the Honda CR-V, they are still trying to solve the fuel-in-oil issue in their turbo 1.5. Too bad about that, otherwise it's a pretty good vehicle.

@@itr0863 Crosstrek is definitely smaller. The Crosstrek might be comparable to the first or second gen in size. I have a 2010 RAV4 and it's way bigger than the Crosstrek. The new RAV4 is bigger than my gen. Forrester is the right comparison, but I suspect (haven't checked the numbers) the new RAV4 is bigger than the current gen Forrester. I've been looking at an Ascent to replace my RAV4, but if the adventure is big enough I might go with that. I'm really digging the new look. The previous gen looked like a Hyundai or something. Just wished they reintroduced the swing door with full-size spare (but proper swing direction for NA). Swing was better.

If you drive off-road extensively the brakes will overheat with these types of system, but are useful for tractiion. The first statement he makes is correct, the system applies braking to the spinning wheel. It DOES NOT "distribute torque to the tyre that NEEDS grip" as he states. Why on earth would you send extra torque to a wheel that needs (i.e. does not have enough) grip? It directs the across axle torque to the wheel THAT HAS GRIP (i.e. the one that isn't spinning).

It's coming sometime in the early 20s. The current 5th gen runs great and really isn't that dated.

If you've never take the Toyota factory tour in Georgetown Kentucky I'd highly suggest it, they make a solid well built vehicles and their commitment to quality shows in the plant.

Quality? My ex's Rav4 with only 75k klms had a suspension link break and wheel almost completely fall off! Oh what a feeling that could of been!
@scarhart536 жыл бұрын
Sure it can go off road. It can go on your lawn, it can certainly go in the ditch next to the paved road. It can go on gravel roads as long as they're not too rough. Oops, that's not technically "off-road", is it? I kid because I care. A Rav4 is NOT an SUV, obviously. An SUV has a full frame like a pickup truck. It has lots of ground clearance so you can go over rocks or deep snow. It has a transfer case with a low range, because if you actually go "off-road", you need to be able to plow through snow and crawl up hills and over rocks at very low speeds. A uni-body like the Rav4 would literally break in half if it spent much time off-road. So a Rav4 is a station wagon, or maybe a hatchback. It's a car, in other words.
@PastPresentFuture3606 жыл бұрын
scarhart53 I agree with you for the most part but do want to clarify - is BOF really a defining criteria of an SUV? Land Rover, Jeep walked away from BOF almost three decades ago.
@valdius856 жыл бұрын
It really seems there are some ego issues working in the background... SUV = Sport Utility Vehicle. It is not an off-roader. It is for going camping in the mountains etc not rock crawling. It will take snowy roads and most forest roads well enough. With good tires it can do a lot for most people.
@alecpost6 жыл бұрын
You're not meant to take it off-roading... No one thinks this thing is the same as a 4Runner. It's a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV), put some decent tires on it and it'll handle some pretty rough roads just fine. Rock crawling? No. Old, washed out, and neglected logging roads? Yes.
@valdius856 жыл бұрын
@@alecpost A lot of people have purities issues. As you said, it will take a logging road in the forest with good tires put on. If lifted, and it is already high, it will be better if ground clearance is an issue. I assume most buyers know that and are happy with the capabilities. Unfortunately there will always be people trying to get attention by reminding everyone that RAV4 is not an off-road vehicle. It is boring at this point after so many years this types of vehicles are on the market. :)

@tmwall256 жыл бұрын
BsOnK1969 really?!? why lose all that money in depreciation. just pay off the subie and enjoy life without a car payment for a few years then buy the rav4. your family will thank you.

Yes. Subaru has a terrible CVT and a weak engine. RAV4 will be more powerful and reliable overall.
@erik15146 жыл бұрын
I own a 2017 Outback and I would definitely trade it in for the new RAV4. The interior quality of the outback is cheap to say the least. It's painfully slow, dissapearing coolant issues and CVT issues with mine already at 20k miles. I'm sure I'm not the only since Subaru forums are littered with complaints. One thing both cars have is a good depreciation value, although I could see the RAV4 beating the Subaru in that department as well.

Love your reviews, as usual.. You guys answer all the right questions. I hate the background music. I could barely hear Nathan talking through most of the video. Please stop with the loud, annoying music. It adds nothing interesting to your videos.

A more constructive criticism could be, go to Warner Chapelle Production Music. We use them in our videos and they have an incredible selection.

I really like the new look for 2019. Less of a delicate lady face on the grill. It's too bad that you have to jump to almost top of the range before you can get the Adventure package. Not everyone wants to spend an extra $7K to get a better looking grill and larger tires. The demo was a bit weak. I get that it was supplied by Toyota, but realistically the TFL Pontiac Aztek could do it. A groomed dirt road is not "off road".

Btw when you do your offroad/snow review of rav4 do not forget three important things: 1. Diff locked 2 ESP off 3 Put on “Sport Mode” ( this is what you didnt do when testing the prev. gen in comparison with the bmw x3. Sport mode give u a lot of power and the auto transm/ CVT acts in a different way

Toyota just brought me back to thinking about a rav 4. the last generation turned me off. I loved my fathers 2010 V6 but when I was looking at a 2016 for my wife, I went with a CX-5 because it had a real automatic. I refuse to buy a CVT and so does my wife. Even women hate them.

Hoping you can do a test of the awd system on the hybrid with your new rollers. I saw a video of the last gen rav4 hybrid on rollers that failed every test and basically had 1 wheel drive. I’m really hoping they have fixed that for this remodel as the mpg numbers are great but I need some decent off road ability.

it is still sluggish and this 4 cyl. noise it's really loud . Does the cry faster 0 to 60? I've heard it goes in 7.5 sec... I wish the V6 option was still available it would have been a killer SUV

Cool vid I appreciate the fact that you guys are testing less obvious vehicles. I love big trucks and SUVs but don't love the mpg. The Rivian is not a real thing and most likely too expensive for me for at least the next 3 -5 years so do you have any suggestions for actually capable off road vehicles that don't need to be filled up every 10 seconds. Also very aware of Subarus but looking for anything else out there old or new. Thanks!
