Replacement of heater coolant bypass valve on a 2019 Toyota Rav4. This was due to an Engine Maintenance Required See Dealer message on the dash while driving.
One way to check for this is to turn off your AC. Restart your vehicle. The Engine Maintenance Required message should not appear. If the message returns upon turning on the Air Conditioning, then it is this heater bypass valve most likely.
I struggled with the removal process. Eventually I was able to take off the entire assembly with the coolant hoses. Had to make a new coolant hose to replace the press fit one from the valve to the tee fitting. Still works months later.
I am not a professional mechanic. You should only use this information to assist you in determining what you can handle for your own vehicle maintenance. I encourage you to seek professional mechanic's assistance before attempting any repair on your vehicle.

Just did the replacement, took less than 50 minutes, watched my security cameras after to see. I DID not remove battery, first I pulled off the engine dress up cover, removed the 12mm bolt that secures the other hose next to the bypass valve to gain access to the bypass valve 12mm bolt and then removed that. used a pick to pull out both sides of the white clip that holds the hose to the bypass valve and removed the hose, coolant spills out, no big deal. Then from the video above I removed the wire that is held on with a 10mm bolt and move it out of way. I wasted probably 10 minutes looking for a mirror to see the clamp on the hose that is the short end of the hose down below the bypass valve. Once i seen it i knew what I was working with and felt it to get a set of pliers on it. I used a square end set of pliers that had about 3/8 wide jaws. Other pliers would slip off. Hose slid right off. Next was the lower hose, there's a plastic bracket on it halfway that holds two other hoses, just unclip the bracket from the other hoses. Once that was done I turned the wheels as far right as possible. I lied on the ground and could easily see the lower hose and clamp. The clamp ends were facing up and all I did was use a pick screwdriver with a hook end to grab it and spin it around. Then it was very simple to grab the clamp and slide it off. I slid this one onto the mount instead of back onto hose, made it easier for install. Reversed everything you did and top up coolant in radiator through radiator cap, not overflow bottle and run engine to get air bubbles out. rinse away any excess spilled coolant and done.

such bullshit that its not a service bulletin yet. Just went to the dealer and literally told them this was the problem based on thousands of complaints online. They confirmed 30 minutes later, still charged me $150 diag fee and another $500 (including 2 hours labor) to do this job

Hello, Is this the part that is bad when the car tells you that the engine requires maintenance?
@Lancer0989
@Lancer0989 2 ай бұрын
It can be. If it goes away when you turn the ac off, car off, then car back on with ac off. It probably is. Otherwise you can check with a scan tool.

Yes, I just had mine done by a small garage and the labor was $120- the engine maintenance light was coming on even if the A/C was off. I bought the valve with the hose attached (part #16260-F0010) from the dealership and it was $137$ - even though it looks like the MSRP is $117.22 online. I really don’t think you need the whole hose/valve combo - the only reason they have it as a whole unit for the Rav4 is because the place where the hose connects to the part is pressure fitted instead of clamped. On a Corolla it is connected by a clamp and the piece that connects to the hose is smooth instead of barbed. If you take a small flathead screwdriver and jimmy the hose over each barb you can disconnect the hose without damaging the hose. Then just use the Corolla part - reattach the hose and put a clamp on it. It will save you money on the part and the labor and the coolant. The Corolla part # is 16671-F2010. I am not sure what kind of clamp they use to secure it on the Corolla.

@@suddenzone It is easier to change with the hoses. I was not able to get the part with the hoses and had to fabricate some heater hoses. The hoses are pressed fit onto barbs on the valve and a tee connection below it. I was unable to get them off without destroying them.

autoparts.toyota.com/products/category/parts You can order the parts and have them shipped to you. Or if you order it from a nearby dealership, through the website, you can pick up the parts in person and save shipping costs. If you have the 2019+ Rav4, the part numbers I used are: The bypass valve with the hoses is 16260-F0010. The bypass valve by itself is 16671-F0020. I recommend the one with the hoses.

I have a 2019 Rav4 LE with 57k miles Sometimes when idling in traffic and the A/C was on, it stops blowing cold air and hot one starts coming from the A/C vents Someone told me it's a known problem in Camrys and Rav4 due to heater valve! Is this a possible cause?
@Lancer0989
@Lancer0989 9 ай бұрын
With this particular issue that I am remedying, it caused a service engine soon message to appear on the display in the instrument cluster. There was no way to remove the message besides fixing the valve. If you have a message on there, then yes. Otherwise you could be having a separate issue.

@@Lancer0989do I have to replace the hoses??

@@northernneckoutdoors3136 You do have to, but I highly recommend buying the one with the hoses as it is easier to replace the whole assembly with hoses than trying to take the hoses off. If you find a way to remove the hoses, let us know. I broke mine taking them off because they are on 3 barbs on the bottom of the bypass valve without a clamp.

@@Lancer0989 I cut the hose around the existing valve. I made a half inch cut and then was able to pull the hose off the bottom. But I see where you said it would be easier to replace the assembly than just replacing the valve. Why do you think this?
@Lancer0989
@Lancer0989 11 ай бұрын
@@omarmata73 Because the stock valve has barbs that the original hose gets molded to. I wasn't able to separate them by pulling and twisting. Instead in the process I ended up damaging the hose and had to cut them off to remove the valve. It would be easier to remove the hoses where they connect, with oem tension clamps, to the engine block, transmission cooler, and valve and replace as one assembly.

@Lancer0989
@Lancer0989 8 ай бұрын
The main issue I had was there was no way to turn it off. It is very annoying. Another issue might be if it is stuck open, it will provide heat to the cabin even if you don't want heat there. So reduced efficiency of the heater/air conditioner. I guess it would also take longer for the engine to warm up if it needed to warm the coolant that is going through the heater core. It could slightly reduce engine efficiency. I doubt it would be noticeable though.

It should be like many of the other Toyota connectors. It has a tab that you can press with your fingers or a small screwdriver. With the tab pressed, slowly pull the connector out of its receptacle.
