On my 03 bmw the valves had to be right on and then with every change the throttle bodies had to be re balanced to avoid a vibration problem. Bmw boxers are beautiful engines but very meticulous. Thanks for all the great videos . I've been dreaming of a Ural for years .

A slight drag on the blade w/o binding is what you're shooting for. If you don't have a proper gauge, standard printer paper gives a reliable .003" reference (0.1mm/25.4mm/inch = .0039"). In any case, slappy valves are happy valves.

A old bmw master I used to tech with would always say.... slappy valves are happy valver

Don’t know how I missed this one. Good video. I always find it easier to adjust the valves (after loosening the lock nut) by hand and then tightening the locking nut. For some reason, it is easier to control the adjuster nut with my fingers that with a wrench - probably because the moment arm is shorter, especially with shaky hands. Thanks!

A loose valve is a happy valve. Someone is channeling their inner Bob Ross here.

I've been adjusting valves on cars and bikes since I was a kid. There is no reason to have to add additional gap. But if you don't a Ural will cook . The factory tight setting is wrong, they know it but that's most likely to get emission certified. Kind of typical of many 3rd world countries.

I've always wondered about the "fine art" of proper valve adjustment; When you slide that feeler gauge between the valve stem & the rocker; What's the proper "feel" when you check your clearances...Too tight, too loose, or" Just right"...

Maybe someday they'll come out with hydraullically adjustable valve clearances for all motorcycles, just like on cars..

It requires just a little drag, that's the right feeling you should have!

Too tight, and you can't insert the feeler gauge leaf. Some people "hang" the leaf while adjusting the tappet, but that's also too tight. Slightly too tight will make a mark, or dent in the feeler gauge leaf. Just right is when you feel a little drag, but there's no mark on the leaf.

Why go above the recommended clearance? Would it relate to the local climate (I'm thinking higher clearance in cold climates because everything doesn't expand as much)?

My 2011 Tourist has two arrows on the flywheel. They're less than an inch between. Which is the one I use? Is one BTDC and the other TDC?

1st mark is the timing mark 2nd mark is tdc

Question - I have noticed you tend to prefer snap on tools. Perhaps this is reason your 13mm socket fits easily. My socket can’t fit on the nut because rocker arm too tight and doesn’t provide enough clearance for the socket.

Found a socket that fits finally

Various companies make thin wall sockets that can fit, or one can grind down his/her own
