In October 23, I purchased a 22 SEL Arteon in blue. I tried Audi Q3 and Q5, Volvo XC60, and BMW X1. The VW was clearly a better drive than any others and had more boot space than both Audi's and the most rear leg room of any. It was a compacy car with 7K miles so it came certified with more than a year longer warranty than a new one and I save 7K.

@Steven Strain It just seems ridiculous that if they use the EA888 engine from the Golf R that they at least keep it at the horsepower values - especially since the Golf is a lighter vehicle. VW has been burned repeatedly trying to sell models designed to appeal to European tastes in the US. European Passats and Tiguans were both redesigned for American tastes to boost sales, and the well regarded but expensive Touareg was replaced by the Atlas, a vehicle built in the US and not sold in Germany. Neither is VW's best selling US model, the Jetta. Even the US version of the GTI is offered with fewer features at a substantially lower price than in Europe. (A fully loaded Autobahn trim DSG GTI has an MSRP of over $50,000 in Germany.) The bottom line is that American compared to Europeans want larger, cheaper vehicles and resist seeing VW as a premium brand. But there is another, more subtle but important difference in the US. Though the crossover/SUV craze is worldwide, Europeans still value true GT's, i.e. vehicles designed for roads that have been in existence for hundreds of years snaking through rural areas and in towns and cities where the idea of destroying buildings built 500 years ago to accommodate a freeway is heresy. And the freeways on which Europeans drive are often well maintained and designed for vehicles traveling well in excess of 100 mph. "Performance" to Americans often begins and ends with 0-60 acceleration. To Europeans it means a car that can sustain triple digit mph's in comfort for hours at a time and follow rural roads that respect ancient boundaries among farms. With all that in mind VW doesn't expect to sell many Arteons in the US even though it's been on sale internationally for almost two years and sells very well in Europe. My local (relatively high volume) VW dealer in the Seattle metro area expects to receive as few as two and no more than five Arteons for the remainder of 2019. Its most obvious rival, the KIA Stinger, will undoubtedly outsell it if for no other reason than KIA will export far more Stingers to the US. But for those who value European driving dynamics and the premium feel of a roomy European GT, a fully loaded top trim SEL version with an MSRP less than $48K is an appealing alternative to a Stinger, much less a BMW, Audi, or Mercedes at thousands more.

What really bothers me about the VW is the fact that the interior looks only mildly different than the 2006 Passat, the gear shifter surround even on the fully loaded SEL Premium is full of blank buttons, there's no heads-up display, the engine is a little underpowered for such a heavy car with GT looks, it costs as much as a Tesla Model 3 but will never get better with software updates, the fuel economy is pretty poor and the front looks garish.

On the other hand, a minor fender bender in an Arteon is unlikely to require a $10,000 repair and four months in the shop. (See TFL)

Stephen Hendricks Our 2014 NMS 1.8t Passat had an accident almost identical to the one TFL had in the same place, but not as severe. It took a month and a half to repair (shop didn't break things), and cost over $6000 to fix. It didn't have any sort of sensors in the bumper, a charge port or LED taillights to replace. The Arteon is made in Germany so parts would likely be far more expensive than bargain basement US-built Passat parts and would likely require longer to fix as parts are only going to be available in small numbers since it's going to be such a niche vehicle in the US. Considering the shop breaking not one, but two windows the $10,000 repair bill on a brand new luxury car wasn't that high considering my experience with the Passat or even a Honda Accord. My Accord's front windshield cost about $1200 plus $300 for sensor calibration.

More power, a digital cockpit, dual injection (the result of government emission requirements) as well as configurations that allow a buyer to pick and choose individual options rather than settle for a few predetermined trim packages. Both the Stinger and the Arteon are fine cars. (And I'm a fan of both KIA and VW. I own a KIA Sorento and a GTI.) But despite their similarities the Stinger and Arteon are somewhat different vehicles with different strengths. The Stinger is an American interpretation of a European GT. (And a good one.) But the Arteon IS a European GT meant for twisting roads that have been in place for a thousand years and well maintained highways that support 100+ mph for hours on end. I've driven both the 4 cylinder and the V6 Stinger. And while the 4 banger is adequate, it's nowhere near as satisfying to drive as the Arteon. The twin scroll V6 Stinger will certainly bury an Arteon on a dragstrip but that's not the intended mission of a GT.
@scottthompson58555 жыл бұрын
Stephen Hendricks Drove the Arteon. You can talk all damn day about the HP being adequate, but it IS underpowered for a vehicle of it’s weight. 1. It is not as practical as any "good" SUV, but is is close. 2. Why there are no Japanese liftbacks on the market? Come on! 3. DSG is often problematic long term. VW did a good decision of standard AT. 4. This might be one of the best reasonably priced sedan.
@MotoManTV5 жыл бұрын
To your point two . . . I agree, a HUGE blindspot for Lexus especially. I get it that Asia is not a big 5 door sedan market but most Japanese OEMs are VERY good at creating products for local markets. Here's one example of an Asian OEM's interpretation: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rqTWh4Z_Z5KtaMk

I agree about SUVs, but I think that sedans are just as bad because of their impractical trunk space and generally bad rear visibility. Wagons and hatchbacks are the best. So the Arteon doesn't allow the back seats to be put down?

That R line would be better to play options game with. So is this the replacement for the Passat CC or for the Phaeton? They seem to sell them like hot cakes here in Europe but for me it is just a little fancier Passat. Not enough to diversify it from Passat and put it in the E class teritory. The estate car beats the suv for me. The current Volvo estate, especially V90, is just wonderful and huge. Oh and just a heads up on VW, the rear brake discs are prone to rusting and are beeing changed under waranty here in Europe. They say that the material from which they are made of is of unsatisfactory quality. Nicht gut on an 35k car!
@MotoManTV5 жыл бұрын
Replacement for the CC. LOVE the V90 but *astronomically* more expensive than this.

Regarding the "step out of your suv's" topic- i think the main thing is to be happy. If they're happy in their suvs, they make their daily driving easier- its ok. I do not think handling should be so importand in cars nowadays, i think they should be softer, with higher suspension travel. Speed limits decrease, fines increase. Leave the agility to sunday cars.
@dleetr5 жыл бұрын
Keep trying to bury SUVs brother, we'll get there. As for roads though, forget that, maybe the rise in the popularity of SUVs was a subconscious acknowledgement that the West is going to collapse and with that economic and social collapse so too will go the tax base that supports the production and maintenance of roads. So people are being spiritually drawn to high ground clearance and big tyres. Heh, just a theory.
@stephenhendricks1035 жыл бұрын
Not a bad one. The Europeans who purchase cars (and many rely instead on superior mass transit) value vehicles that can be driven in comfort on roads with three digit speed limits (in mph's.) Such roads depend on a popular willingness to maintain them.

I want 400 + horsepower and rear wheel / AWD drive . My 2005 v8 Touareg May get 18-20 mpg, but the air suspension, room and overall weight and comfort beat these modern VW offerings. And it has a (8) in lift plus 4WD AND POSI TRACK TOO. ATLAS? WITH A V6? I’ll take a nice slightly used 2018 YUKON 4WD 6.2 L with power and room to spare...UNLESS YOU GIVE US BACK OUR TOUAREG, THE LAST VW NOW WITH A TURBO V8 DIESEL . WHERE? IN CHINA FOR GODS SAKE....AND THE FATHERLAND OF COURSE...BUT NOT HERE IN U.S. , THE AAAATLAS...FOR MOMS. GOSH VW, DID YOUR BA__S DROP OFF?
@stephenhendricks1035 жыл бұрын
You might want to compare the sales of the Atlas vs the Touareg in the US to understand why that excellent vehicle has been replaced with the Atlas here. I feel your pain not just regarding the Touareg but with the Tiguan and the European Passat, as well. But put the blame where it belongs. Americans want bigger, cheaper vehicles and are more than willing to sacrifices other features and capabilities for price and size.
@scottthompson58555 жыл бұрын
I owned a Touareg. What a heavy machine. ATE tires (19”) because of weight. The rear storage (without seats folded) was a joke. A nice riding good looking vehicle (V6), but flawed in a LOT of ways.
@jackdempsey45325 жыл бұрын
Again, it may get 18-30 mpg but my 2005 Gen 1 Touareg is very expensive to fix, complicated , overbuilt and uniquely applicable to all situations beyond any other SUV , ( up to 8 in suspension range) has 19in custom wheels a great real skid plate and a v8 engine with AWD, 4 WD, POSI- TRACK to pull you out of almost anything . All in a timeless design that’s now (14) years old. That’s all I wanted to say, I’m sure it has a limited market ,um..sure. That’s why VW has a v8 turbodiesel new Touareg running all over the rest of the world.

The MSRP under $40K is an enticement to draw those considering a top trim Accord or Camry into VW showrooms. You'll probably find that the only unit in that configuration was "sold yesterday" when you visit the dealer. It's a common pricing tactic among European brands. The real world price of the Arteon is the SEL 4Motion version around $45K , or so. And among its numerous upgrades, it comes with leather upholstery standard.
