I am awaiting a leased Arteon, to be delivered in January 2020. I live in Germany. I tested multiple Arteon versions (and of course competitor vehicles) before ordering. This is a great car. It is larger, but so maneuverable that you do not recognize the size when driving. 4 can sit in great comfort and the cargo space is more than many SUVs in this size category. I have also ordered what you cannot get - a 170 HP version. This engine is 2 seconds slower 0-60mph, but I cruised at 110 mph in both and the 170HP version can reach 140 mph, so why do I need so much more? On our very curvy slalom-like roads, which I drive on every day, both cars drove great. When passing, the smaller engine did great - the torque and kick-in of power was just fine (and I got even better mpg than you did with that smaller hp car!). Anyway, it is a great car, but too expensive here and there. I got a very discounted rate for mine, otherwise I might not have made the deal. Both 4-cyl. are smooth and I cannot see a need to put a 6-cyl. in here, except for prestige or exhaust-sound reasons.

I'm a current 2015 VW CC R Line owner. I LOVE my car. My only gripe with it is the fact that it's fwd. However you can only get 4 Motion in the v6 model. With a few basic mods my 2.0T is much quicker than the available v6. I am in love with the Arteon (especially the R Line trim), BUT... that price is just ridiculous. If I'm spending that kind of money on a VAG product, I'm getting an Audi. Honestly, I don't understand the target demographic for this car. Those who can afford it are much more likely to get an Audi. Great job on the Arteon, VW! It's a shame that you won't sell many.

Forrest, first of your reviews that I've watched...dude you do a great review!! Thanks very much!
@stephenhendricks1035 жыл бұрын
Kudos for a comprehensive, detailed, and unusually perceptive review, Forrest. I was especially impressed by your comments about the performance of the Arteon as a true Grand Touring vehicle designed to be driven comfortably for hours at high speeds, often more than 100 mph, on immaculately maintained highways in Europe. You didn't have the opportunity to drive the Arteon on the Autobahn where they are a frequent site but you did get to drive of Texas highways that are probably the closest imitation of the Autobahn in America. Unfortunately at nowhere near the speed for which the Arteon is designed. I'd add that true European GT's like the Arteon are designed to be driven on back roads, often paved over the winding cobblestone roads laid down as long as 2000 years ago by the Romans. Our wide open spaces and the fact that much of the country has neither frequent curves in our roads nor mountains to climb make those requirements less critical for many Americans. All that illustrates a fundamental difference in the way Europeans and Americans tend to define "performance." There's a reason that Americans invented drag races and stock car racing on high bank oval tracks while Europeans invented rallies, sports cars, and road racing on actual roads or tracks designed to emulate them. To Americans "performance" is measured by 0-60 and quarter mile times. That's not the perspective of Europeans especially in reference to Grand Touring vehicles. Your review illustrates the difference well.
@labradoodleparadies5 жыл бұрын
I don't know where you see them frequently - not here in Germany. This is a seldomly-seen car, probably because it is overpriced for here (I am in Germany and have ordered an Arteon for January 2020) and VW forgot to advertise it (really - you NEVER see ads for this car!). Most people do not know this car - the comments I got while testing different versions proved this well - so many came up and asked me what I was driving. Your comments about where the car is driven are straight-on. This car maneuvers wonderfully and you do not feel the size at all and a 170HP engine is just fine for 110 MPH cruising and 140 MPH top speed and it is only minimally slower 0-60 than the 270 HP version and uses even less fuel!
@stephenhendricks1035 жыл бұрын
@@labradoodleparadies Saying the Arteon is a "frequent" sight in Europe was probably hyperbole. Nevertheless, the Arteon has sold well in Europe. The recently installed VW CEO has said they don't expect it to be a big seller in the US but it's hoped that it will lend a premium air to the VW lineup. Considering the spotty performance VW has experienced in selling their Euro-spec vehicles in the US, I suspect the company has their collective fingers crossed.

I agree with you. Every one of the other car channels tries to compare it directly to an A7. It’s not an Audi. I went and test drove one and was highly impressed. Most dealerships that I went to had it mark at least $8000 under MSRP. $38,000 for an SEL Premium R-Line is an outstanding value IMO.

I had the same question. Based on my GTI with the same engine, however, I'm surprised but not shocked by the MPG's Forrest was seeing driving steadily on the flat well maintained Texas highways. Even if his entire trip fuel economy of 38 mpgs or so is a bit high it is extremely impressive for a vehicle that can be driven comfortably at speeds well over 70 mph.

A word about the VW's pricing. $44-$48K may seem to be pricey for a VW sedan but it's worth noting that the Arteon in a trim comparable to Forrest's test vehicle in the United Kingdom has an MSRP of over $57,000 at current exchange rates. The Golf R's MSRP is roughly $40K to $42K in the US versus $55K in the UK. And a top trim Autobahn GTI in the US with an MSRP of about $38K has an MSRP over $50K in the UK. All these differences are similar in other European countries. They stem in large part because Europeans see VW as a premium brand. Not so among many American consumers. As a result VW has designed several vehicles specifically aimed at the US market where many consumers want larger, cheaper cars. It also means that US spec versions of the same cars often have fewer features than their European counterparts. As far as the Arteon is concerned, it's worth noting that the most comparable vehicle available is the 2.0L turbo "Premium" trim with AWD. As closely equipped as possible the MSRP is $42,385 compared to the Arteon's $44,555.* The KIA is an impressive vehicle with an equally impressive price. But it lacks the upscale interior touches of the Arteon and has 22 cubic ft of cargo space behind the second row compared to the VW's 27 cf. Folding the rear seats in the Stinger provides a total 41 cf of cargo space vs 55 in the Arteon, a differences that are significant in a "grand touring" vehicle. I own both a KIA and a VW and have driven both the Stinger and the Arteon. If I were choosing between the two I'd take the Arteon over the Stinger 2.0L turbo. If the choice were between the Arteon and the GT2 it might be different but the GT2 is significantly more expensive than the Arteon. In that case, the choice would likely be between the Stinger and the Audi A5 or A7 and other factors would come into play. *Arguably the Buick Regal Sportback is another competitor to both the Arteon and the Stinger. Based on reviews, however, the Buick is more an alternative to midsize family sedans than to a true GT. Others may differ in that judgement.
@JonathanShefftz5 жыл бұрын
"[...]*Arguably the Buick Regal Sportback is another competitor to both the Arteon and the Stinger. Based on reviews, however, the Buick is more an alternative to midsize family sedans than to a true GT. Others may differ in that judgement." My conclusion was that the Arteon is closer to the Regal than to the Stinger in terms of overall appeal. But I can see someone trying to choose between all three of them (especially the GS version of the Regal). For me personally though it came down to some specific add'l features in the Arteon that are lacking in the Regal, the Arteon in general have an edge over the Regal, and a fear of having to deal with GM overall and also the sorry state of my local Buick dealers (plus the uncertain status of GM's arrangement with PSA and the uncertainty about future spare parts availability).

I have watched a ton of reviews on this and the common theme is that this is nice car, but for the MSRP, there are better options. The interior looks nice, and driving impressions have all said the driving dynamics are ok. For 50K though, everything should be close to great! Plus, this car was shown more then a year ago, so the new car appeal might have wore off for car people like myself There are some better values out there. A fully loaded Honda Accord for me then 10k cheaper, would be the way for me. With that said I hear these things are being heavily discounted from dealers, so for the right price, this might still be a win!

The interior is super quality, but VW forgot to add some pizzazz for a flagship, that is true. But I am in Germany, and drive a 170HP version (does 140 MPH just fine, cruises at 110 MPH when the Autobahn is free). OK, I have to accept 0-60mph at almost 2 seconds slower, but when overtaking on curvy roads I feel no disadvantage (I test drove both versions). Go test this car on the curviest road you can find (if you can find one). Here, I drive on great slalom roads every day, and the Arteon feels nimble and great - I do not feel the size at all. So, it DOES feel great and perform superbly. Further, 4 people can sit VERY comfortably in there, and it holds more than many SUVs in this size category.

I would take a KIA Stinger GT2 AWD instead.

And you'd pay quite a bit more for it even with KIA's extremely aggressive pricing. A GT2 AWD has an MSRP of $52,400.

@stephenhendricks1035 жыл бұрын
Not happening. This is a European Grand Touring vehicle aimed at driving in countries where fuel is over $8 a gallon. There will be a hybrid or a full electric version of the Arteon before there's a V6. Of course, if you're addicted to off the line acceleration you can move to Europe and get an Arteon with a diesel engine.

Others have probably noticed this, he was bragging up the 40 MPG fuel economy, BUT 18-wheelers were passing him!
@forrestsautoreviewsofficial4 жыл бұрын
Well I was on a 2 lane highway having driven over 5 hours at that point. I was in the right lane with cruise control set to about 75MPH. Occasionally I had trucks that would fly by me going at least 80 and one of these instances was captured in the review.
@robrandall19444 жыл бұрын
That’s the main reason for him getting 40 MPG...because he was on cruise control! Obviously even if anyone going 77 mph, they were gonna pass him. So your comment is irrelevant.

You have to be kidding me..You just said that `virtual cockpit is not that good because its volkswagen and audi is better` WHY ARE YOU DOING A REVIEW ON A VOLKSWAGEN IF YOU SAY THAT THIS IS WORSE THAN THE AUDI ITS LITERALLY THE SAME THING BECAUSE VOLKSWAGEN OWNS AUDI THEY HAVE THE SAME ELECTRONICS. what is wrong with you. i just unsubbed because of this and your `knowledge`
@acchaladka5 жыл бұрын
Actually no, the VW digital cockpit is a little different to the Audi’s - maps don’t show as high resolution and the dials aren’t scalable moveable in the same way. I’ve seen some infotainment reviews that talk about this in some detail; it appears you are the one wrong on facts here.

@@chocolatewheelchair I've had a lot better luck over my time owning Volkswagens than what most seem to report... like any brand things can break but I personally have gotten more for my money with the VW'S I've owned and I have had quite a number of vehicles over the last 35 years of driving .... the dealer actually offered the upgrade tune from APR tuning ... the stage 1+ is warrantee approved so apparently it's not much more radical than what the Audi version of the 2.0 turbo that they share has from factory
