I glad so gladDoug finally produced a video review of MY favorite Luxury car of all time. I have owned somewhere over 137 new and used cars in my 55 years and I purchased my 2000 BMW 750iL brand new in 7/2000 for the sum of $104,772. It has all options except executive rear seating options (could not locate one with that option at time of purchase). It came with 16" BBS wheels but I purchased a set of 18" factory wheels as a dealer installed option so I had an extra set for bad weather. The everything still works on the car (including all pixels, cup holders have never been used because i do not allow eating or drinking in any of my cars), and the only thing fixed outside of normal maintenence is replacement of the factory Navigation with a new Mark IV navigation computer after the original quit working this past spring and the fan and shroud and radiator after the fan decided to explode. I have maintained all factory service intervals and any issues were taken care of immediately. The only thing currently at issue is the roof clear coat has started to peel and just the last weekend the check engine light came on and threw a code for "cam positioning sensor" which will be fixed before putting the car away for the winter. Since 2006 the car has been stored Oct 1 through April 1 and since then has never been driven in the rain or snow. From 2000 until 2006 I lived in VA and was never been in snow. The car currently has 131,000. Out of all my vehicles this is by far my favorite and that is why I kept it. The new cars are nice but none have the timeless styling of the newer (98-01) face lift E38s. From the full leather dash to the attention to details, this car is IT! I am reluctant to repaint the roof as the car is otherwise 100% free of even the smallest scratch or dent and I like to keep it all original. It will be a big decision to paint the roof. I actually considered previously asking Doug if I wanted to interview my car, but figured it's better kept a secret now that these are beginning to rise in value. Only about 1,000 V12 E38s were brought to North America each year 98-01 and they are getting more difficult to find. I hope this is because of people realizing the rewards of this car and not because they are not worth fixing. I will keep this car as long as I can drive. I'll sell my 95 S600 (love it because it reminds me of old Mercedes quality)before I sell the BMW and I love that car almost as much.

Mine had double glazed windows, refridgerator in the back, full seat and audio controls in the back arm rest, plus second phone in the rear arm rest, a powered self opening and closing boot (trunk) lid, blinds all round, lit mirrors in the back of the front head rests for rear passengers and....wait for it... a FAX MACHINE and fax point built into the back of one of the seats. I've got an 98 740il!! In my oppinion the most loaded car for it's age was the E38. There's one called L7 or the Alpina B12. This E38 in specific as Alexander's said it's really base and the video doesn't emphasise that. You could get an endless list of features that back when it was new no one had it and those features are just coming out in the new luxury cars.

Not quite the same thing but for a few years when I was younger, my mom had a 5 series of the same vintage (1999 or 2000, I believe) and I always loved that car. I wanted to learn to drive in it back when I was like, 12. My dad once took me out on the highway when we first got it and just floored it when there was nobody around, doing 120 or 130 down the open, empty roads late at night, giggling all the way while I was planted in my seat. They sold it to some guy who just wanted the wheels off of it cause it had some sport package or something, and NOW, with me having been through therapy and prepping myself to work for the first time a lot later than I should have, I am considering one of those, or one of these, since they seem pretty attainable at a price of 3 to 6 thousand dollars. I'm honestly pretty hyped for it.

I once owned a 99 750i in Cosmos black, and I adored it. Double glazing, rain sensitive wipers, auto-tilt rear view mirror, heated wing mirrors, television, front and rear phones, memory seats, and tiptronic gear select. The steering wheel moved out of the way, and the seat moved back, to let you enter gracefully. The power was endless, and for the time, the kickdown was awesome. I could drive hundreds of miles and feel like I'd spent the day in my favourite armchair: driver fatigue was never an issue. I still miss her, and her perfect beauty. In a perfect world, I would want to be buried in her, like a Viking chieftain. I'll never own another car that would make me so happy.

Re: Odd rear seat belts When my E34 was new, the dealer told me why the rear seat belts are seemingly backwards. This is a safety feature. It seems that in accidents with conventional belts the rear passengers would be forced towards the middle of the car, banging their heads together in what was called "gonging". By reversing the belt layout the passengers are better held in their seats and didn't smack into one another.
@jakesmith29846 жыл бұрын
Ryan Stevens Wish they could put that same thinking into the newer cars direct injection problems.
@ryanstevens60106 жыл бұрын
Jake Smith - I do too. 1980s BMW is a lot different than 2010s BMW, a company now seemingly run by a crazed marketing department hell bent on chasing every conceivable market segment whether they exist or not (X6M? 6-series coupes and 4-door "coupes", etc.) with less focus on brilliant engineering decisions. Peak BMW was reached in the days of the E38, E39 and E46 IMHO, and I personally have no desire to own a BMW newer than those. I'm even tempted to do like my father has done and ditch the expensive German machinery and buy a Chevrolet Volt (although I don't have the advantage of solar panels on my roof like he does...)
@jakesmith29846 жыл бұрын
Ryan Stevens Whats sad is thats with many manufactuers.The 90s/early 2000s was the time to buy a car.I only have a one newer car we bought new(2014) Every car now is gonna be an older,easier to fix ,more reliable 90s/2000s car.The only exemption are the Toyotas which are still good and some Fords imo.Those are the only two companies to use both direct and port on the majority of their models. But man,I can get whats in dougs vid for 12k with low miles.Rather have 6 cars for 100k than 1 forone new 100k dollar anyday. And a voltI have read is a pretty good buy.Im actually looking into getting a used prius.Can find low mileage examples for 10k and less.No car payment,no fuss.
@ryanstevens60106 жыл бұрын
Jake Smith - I don't know about that. As my dad and I have both experienced, there is nothing more expensive to own than an older German car. A seemingly simple $350 Service II would turn into a $2,200 bill when all the misc. broken things were fixed, or they'll just eat you alive with a $700 repair here and a $500 repair there. These old cars are great as long as you can afford the myriad little failures, and with some failures (especially electronics), good luck finding the parts. Trust me, the $8-12K spent on purchasing a car like the E38 in this video is only a down payment, with no end to the payments in sight if you want to keep it in excellent shape, as the owner of this car obviously does (and as did I, and my dad as well). It is because of this that dad currently drives a Volt and I now drive a simple and humble Mazda minivan (with a manual transmission, no less, just like my E34), a vehicle that has been 100% reliable in all the years I've owned it.
@jakesmith29846 жыл бұрын
Ryan Stevens As for the repairs on these...yeah most def.I work on all my stuff so I wouldnt mind one. They are expensive at the dealer for sure.But again,as a weekend car,be a decent buy and use the other cars for daily driven. Enjoy that Mazda.Good little van.I loved how they came with a stick.Way a vehicle should be!

Fun review. I own a 98' 750il (73k miles) and a 01' DINAN 7 (89k miles) The 750 also has dual pane glass and a larger transmission (5hp-30) to handle the V12. The NAV can be updated to a DVD driven system (MK4) and a 16:9 widescreen, all plug and play. I updated my 98' in 45 minutes. The DINAN Ive custom retrofitted the NBT system from a 2015 BMW. Love it Ive been in E38's since 2005 and will always have at least one. They are great cars with timeless styling. One interesting quirk is that this car was made for long distance auto bahn cruising so the petrol tanks were huge. About 90-100 litres 🙂

I picked one up last Friday 😇 a 1999 3.5L V8. Oh it drives so smoothly. Can't wait to take it thru Europe. I'm from Holland btw

I saw a billionaires house once where the house was worth at least 1 million and the car he was using was an E38.. that was in 2019... it shows how people with all the money to buy modern luxury cars prefer this 2001 car

Look at the styling of this 7 series and compare it to today's 7 series. BMW needs to hire new stylists.

Doug, you should definitely review the especially rare BMW L7, which has double the double amount of quirks and features, than the "regular" e38 seven series!!
