The 2001 BMW 750iL is a special car -- and I think it's the most beautiful luxury sedan ever. Today I'm reviewing the 2001 BMW 7 Series to show you why I think the E38 7 Series is such a great car.

In America you don't do roundabouts and barely do corners... In Europe and GB especially we're all about roundabouts - turn signals and Spaghetti Junction - Gravelly Hill Interchange, better known throughout the UK by its nickname Spaghetti Junction, is junction 6 of the M6 motorway where it meets the A38(M) Aston

iversonloco Not true, I have a 95 740i with 298k miles. The turn signal would not cancel on left turn. Still felt like new when turning it on, but it would not cancel. Took the switch out and it was heavily worn, still felt solid but was worn and barely catching on the clock spring.

I believe it’s the best 7 series ever my father had the 728i and at the same time he had an E46 318i and also a clk 320 but i remember him saying the 7 series was so good he only sold it because of how much it drank. At the end he sold them all except the e46 and after 10 years of owning it a drink driver hit him. Was the end of that. Now I have an e46 318ci and I’ll never sell it. The real problem is not that new cars have tech, the real problem is that 99% of the time they have shitty tech, lack of fluidity, insane input lag, frame drops, everything is slow af, just look at the new 7 series key, yeah it’s cool that it has a screen but what a shitty unresponsive low-resolution low refresh rate laggy screen. At these price-ranges they could have easily included high quality hardware but they didn’t. Also for new french cars for example who though it would be a good idea to control radio sound and climatisation through a laggy touchscreen ? Buttons are required for things that are THIS important, so that we can turn the volume down without crashing the car into a wall, so that we can control climatisation without hitting other cars etc.

You can spot the trim in the car during interior shots. 750s are full leather - stitched door panels, dash, etc. 740's are vinyl/leather inserts for airbag area on doors, but otherwise vinyl. I glad so gladDoug finally produced a video review of MY favorite Luxury car of all time. I have owned somewhere over 137 new and used cars in my 55 years and I purchased my 2000 BMW 750iL brand new in 7/2000 for the sum of $104,772. It has all options except executive rear seating options (could not locate one with that option at time of purchase). It came with 16" BBS wheels but I purchased a set of 18" factory wheels as a dealer installed option so I had an extra set for bad weather. The everything still works on the car (including all pixels, cup holders have never been used because i do not allow eating or drinking in any of my cars), and the only thing fixed outside of normal maintenence is replacement of the factory Navigation with a new Mark IV navigation computer after the original quit working this past spring and the fan and shroud and radiator after the fan decided to explode. I have maintained all factory service intervals and any issues were taken care of immediately. The only thing currently at issue is the roof clear coat has started to peel and just the last weekend the check engine light came on and threw a code for "cam positioning sensor" which will be fixed before putting the car away for the winter. Since 2006 the car has been stored Oct 1 through April 1 and since then has never been driven in the rain or snow. From 2000 until 2006 I lived in VA and was never been in snow. The car currently has 131,000. Out of all my vehicles this is by far my favorite and that is why I kept it. The new cars are nice but none have the timeless styling of the newer (98-01) face lift E38s. From the full leather dash to the attention to details, this car is IT! I am reluctant to repaint the roof as the car is otherwise 100% free of even the smallest scratch or dent and I like to keep it all original. It will be a big decision to paint the roof. I actually considered previously asking Doug if I wanted to interview my car, but figured it's better kept a secret now that these are beginning to rise in value. Only about 1,000 V12 E38s were brought to North America each year 98-01 and they are getting more difficult to find. I hope this is because of people realizing the rewards of this car and not because they are not worth fixing. I will keep this car as long as I can drive. I'll sell my 95 S600 (love it because it reminds me of old Mercedes quality)before I sell the BMW and I love that car almost as much.

I had a 99 750il in Germany in the early 2000's. I got it dirt cheap because of a big oil crisis. Loved it. Drove it for three years and sold it for what I paid for it. Only downside was doing the 100k km service. 4k Euro and there was nothing wrong at all. I laughed about the trunk. I always thought mine was broken! And yes... The Nav system was as bad as you expect. Mine was in German and it took me months to figure out how to get it to stop telling me to go to the last destination that the original owner put in last.

I once owned a 99 750i in Cosmos black, and I adored it. Double glazing, rain sensitive wipers, auto-tilt rear view mirror, heated wing mirrors, television, front and rear phones, memory seats, and tiptronic gear select. The steering wheel moved out of the way, and the seat moved back, to let you enter gracefully. The power was endless, and for the time, the kickdown was awesome. I could drive hundreds of miles and feel like I'd spent the day in my favourite armchair: driver fatigue was never an issue. I still miss her, and her perfect beauty. In a perfect world, I would want to be buried in her, like a Viking chieftain. I'll never own another car that would make me so happy.

Not quite the same thing but for a few years when I was younger, my mom had a 5 series of the same vintage (1999 or 2000, I believe) and I always loved that car. I wanted to learn to drive in it back when I was like, 12. My dad once took me out on the highway when we first got it and just floored it when there was nobody around, doing 120 or 130 down the open, empty roads late at night, giggling all the way while I was planted in my seat. They sold it to some guy who just wanted the wheels off of it cause it had some sport package or something, and NOW, with me having been through therapy and prepping myself to work for the first time a lot later than I should have, I am considering one of those, or one of these, since they seem pretty attainable at a price of 3 to 6 thousand dollars. I'm honestly pretty hyped for it.

Re: Odd rear seat belts When my E34 was new, the dealer told me why the rear seat belts are seemingly backwards. This is a safety feature. It seems that in accidents with conventional belts the rear passengers would be forced towards the middle of the car, banging their heads together in what was called "gonging". By reversing the belt layout the passengers are better held in their seats and didn't smack into one another.

Jake Smith - I do too. 1980s BMW is a lot different than 2010s BMW, a company now seemingly run by a crazed marketing department hell bent on chasing every conceivable market segment whether they exist or not (X6M? 6-series coupes and 4-door "coupes", etc.) with less focus on brilliant engineering decisions. Peak BMW was reached in the days of the E38, E39 and E46 IMHO, and I personally have no desire to own a BMW newer than those. I'm even tempted to do like my father has done and ditch the expensive German machinery and buy a Chevrolet Volt (although I don't have the advantage of solar panels on my roof like he does...)

Ryan Stevens Whats sad is thats with many manufactuers.The 90s/early 2000s was the time to buy a car.I only have a one newer car we bought new(2014) Every car now is gonna be an older,easier to fix ,more reliable 90s/2000s car.The only exemption are the Toyotas which are still good and some Fords imo.Those are the only two companies to use both direct and port on the majority of their models. But man,I can get whats in dougs vid for 12k with low miles.Rather have 6 cars for 100k than 1 forone new 100k dollar anyday. And a voltI have read is a pretty good buy.Im actually looking into getting a used prius.Can find low mileage examples for 10k and less.No car payment,no fuss.
@ryanstevens6010
@ryanstevens6010 6 жыл бұрын
Jake Smith - I don't know about that. As my dad and I have both experienced, there is nothing more expensive to own than an older German car. A seemingly simple $350 Service II would turn into a $2,200 bill when all the misc. broken things were fixed, or they'll just eat you alive with a $700 repair here and a $500 repair there. These old cars are great as long as you can afford the myriad little failures, and with some failures (especially electronics), good luck finding the parts. Trust me, the $8-12K spent on purchasing a car like the E38 in this video is only a down payment, with no end to the payments in sight if you want to keep it in excellent shape, as the owner of this car obviously does (and as did I, and my dad as well). It is because of this that dad currently drives a Volt and I now drive a simple and humble Mazda minivan (with a manual transmission, no less, just like my E34), a vehicle that has been 100% reliable in all the years I've owned it.

Fun review. I own a 98' 750il (73k miles) and a 01' DINAN 7 (89k miles) The 750 also has dual pane glass and a larger transmission (5hp-30) to handle the V12. The NAV can be updated to a DVD driven system (MK4) and a 16:9 widescreen, all plug and play. I updated my 98' in 45 minutes. The DINAN Ive custom retrofitted the NBT system from a 2015 BMW. Love it Ive been in E38's since 2005 and will always have at least one. They are great cars with timeless styling. I always look back at it after I walk away, and still get a grin knowing its mine while im on this ole' rock floating through space. Cheers!

My parents had 2 of the e38 "base" model 740i's. Unbelievable cars. Like a Lay-Z-Boy on wheels but it could handle better than anything, and would go like stink too!
@jylp4u
@jylp4u 6 жыл бұрын
I actually have an 01 740i with the M sport package. There are a few things missed in this video... Some of these cars were bulletproof and had an explosive to blow the windshield out if you ever needed to get out via a window. Some had a bag for your skis... There is a compartment under behind the ashtray for extra storage. This car has motion sensors, you can open all of the windows and close all of the windows, including the roof, from the remote. You don't need the key to open the trunk if it's not locked, you just press the lock, it's actually a button... Some came with a 10.4 sound system, meaning, they had 10 speakers and 4 subwoofers, a factory amplifier and fiberoptic cables for optimum sound quality. That radio is actually the baseline, there was one with a larger display. It has heated and auto-dimming mirrors, yes, the mirrors on the doors automatically dim when someone with bright lights comes up behind you... They also have heated automatic windshield wipers, so they come on automatically when water hits the windshield and they adjust their speed as needed. All windows are one-touch up and down. There are ambient lights inside, so while you're driving at night, it's not completely dark inside the car. Auto-leveling HID headlights (1 light blub is $100)... That particular 750il didn't actually have the complete M package on it. The one that came with the complete M package is actually very rare. I've only ever seen one of them. They come with the M steering wheel and sport seats up front. They lied about the power, it's very underrated. As for handling... The best way I can put it... You know the suggested speed signs on the freeway ramps? The ones that suggest 30mph, I do well over 80mph through them without thinking about touching the brakes and the car doesn't feel like it's going to slide or flip. Remove the governor and the car will do over 170mph. As for how reliable they are, well, I bought mine because my father bought one years ago and out of all of the vehicles he's ever owned, that was by far the most well built. I searched the whole country for one and just so happened to find this one in Michigan while I was in California. I sent my father the money and had him pick it up for me. I only paid $1400 for it. Didn't have a battery, so I didn't even know if it ran or not. When my father got it home, he put a battery in and it started right up. Needed basic maintenance... Fuel filter, spark plugs, ignition coils, o2 sensors, MAF sensor, air filter, valve cover gaskets, oil change, and oil filter. The previous owner was an idiot. The only thing it needed that wasn't a part of the basic maintenance was the LCM (lighting control module). The headlight would flicker as it the car was haunted. Was about $40... Oh, I needed some suspension parts too. Lower control arms, tie rod ends, the usual stuff. Did the work myself, parts weren't even over $300... Now for the horror stories... When it comes time to replace the timing chain set, you'll be looking at about $2000-$4000 if you let a shop do it. Most people don't have the tools or knowledge or time to do it. Most people don't think this car is worth it. Most people aren't very intelligent, hints as to why the world is as it is. But thankfully, some of the intelligent few got together and built the e38 BMW. A set of tires, mounted and balanced, you'll be looking at over $700 and if you get really nice tires, you'll be out of over $1k. I opted for the W rated tires rather than the Z rated tires... The set will likely have to be ordered. My oil change, doing it myself was over $80, but that's because I did it my way. Ignition coils were about $300. Registration renewal fee in Michigan is about $300... Don't even bother trying to use the cup holders, they will break and don't hold much of anything anyways. The wood is real and the coating will crack, but you can sand it down and repair them. This car will attract all kinds of gold diggers, not just mean females that want money... They do tend to rust, so you have to keep on top of them and I don't recommend driving them in the snow. While they do go through the snow surprisingly well for what it is, the snow and salt don't do the body any favors... Letting the windows down before allowing the car to warm up will cause the window regulators to break, but no worries, they're cheap, just a bit of a pain to replace. No, I haven't uploaded any videos of my e38 yet. Funny thing, my car was actually built on my birthday... I found it in my favorite color combination and at an unheard of price. Yes, I will be uploading videos of it soon.

Bought the one I had years ago from an eye doctor too infatuated with his new car and let the 7 rotting in his driveway. In 2015 I bought it with 172k on it (01' 740il Anthracite Grey) wasn't a highline or anything. But he had purchased it new in 01, with a sticker of 67,500. I bought it off him needing rear tires, a battery, not much else for a cool 600$. Not saying anyone else could. But I've heard these cars in decent shape go for under 2500$ on more than one occasion.
