Keith please graph the MAF along with the fuel trims! MAF was UNDER REPORTING the air flow due to the loose air box 😉

I don't see how?.. because it was still pre MAF: it still has to pass by the MAF.. So I would think that it would still read it. I bet the tube was loose down near the throttle body too; where air can come in AFTER the MAF and not be detected

@@calholli MAF is just one localized hot wire filament... Very sensitive to the airflow pattern!

I got recommended the popular video and now have binged almost everything on this channel. Honestly I would watch you talk about cars and their repair in longer form content for example. Like a 40 minute video on how you diagnose a certain issue or a repair or something you find interesting, would be really great. I do get that maybe you dont have time for that and thats all good, you are very inspiring either way! ❤

I have seen this on Nissan vehicles. When the air filter box is loose, it sets a P0101 code for the MAF. It seems these newer vehicles are VERY sensitive to the actual airflow pattern. One would think a pre-MAF air leak would not affect fuel trims, but here we are!! Great find and thanks for sharing!

Airflow dynamics are a real thing and the way the air enters the MAF sensor can have a major effect on its readings! Good find guys

fuel trims has been the hardest thing for me i am finally getting it in my head how important air leaks are and not just intake air exhaust as you will know is important.

I have a great case study here. A long time ago, I called on a shop with a similar problem involving a Ford. They convinced the customer to replace all six injectors. During the disassembly process, as they removed the air cleaner, the mechanic discovered a large green tree air freshener inside-not the small version, but the jumbo one. This air freshener was placed right on top of the air cleaner element, between the air cleaner and the mass airflow sensor. My theory is that the owner was trying to freshen the car's interior air when the air conditioning or heating was turned on but mistakenly placed the air freshener in the air cleaner instead of the HVAC system. What was surprising was that, instead of stopping and informing the customer about this discovery, the mechanic continued to disassemble the vehicle to replace the injectors. I can tell you, this shop is no longer in business today.

I'm not sure why or how I landed on this channel LOL but I'm glad I did super informative even though I don't understand anything you're talking about😅 but I do have a question and I hope you see it!!! Couple years ago I bought a heap a 2019 Chevy Malibu it had 50,000 MI within a week of buying it the shifter wouldn't shift into Park it kept telling me shift into park shift into Park!!! I had gotten an extended warranty 5 year warranty on it because I don't want to have to worry about anything I called about the car told them what was going on they said I need you to contact a dealer so I could use the warranty to get it fixed. And because I noticed it before I bought the car I didn't know anything was wrong with it because I have not had a brand new car since 2002 and it wasn't a car it was a truck!!! So no keys and pushing a button to get something started was super weird to me!!! Anyway they denied my claim because they said I knew it was doing it before I bought the car even though I didn't know that was something was wrong I was just being honest!!! So I had to pay for the part myself nearly $400 come to find out that's a super huge common problem repetitive problem in the Malibu!!! Riverside Chevrolet in Southern California is where I took it since then I've had lights come on check engine lights loss of power lights all kinds of stuff taking it over to Riverside Chevrolet they can never find anything wrong with it one time they kept it for a week and forgot to call me and tell me to come get it yeah I was pissed off!!! The last month guess what it started doing shift into park thing again!!! So I called them and said hey it's doing the same thing again that you guys supposedly fixed and this seems to be a huge problem I've Googled it a number of times and it should be a recall but it's not for some reason!!! So the first thing I did was start praying so I didn't lose my cool make an appointment a week out so I could just wait for them to look at it instead of leaving it for a week and not having a car😠 and I prayed a lot!!! It stopped doing it!!! So I don't know what's going on but I sure in the heck do not trust these dealers these mechanics!!! Nor do I trust people that sell these cars the only reason I got a new car was because I got new grandbabies!!! And yes my truck is still good 2002 but I needed something better for gas to go back and forth for my grandbabies but I feel like this car is a walking disaster!!! I hope you read this and I hope you can tell me about the shifter in these cars and why it's such a problem😊 thank you

What most (not all, most) shops do is to look in the data base for most common cause and replace the part, if that does not fix it, they go for the next most common cause, then third and fourth. They think the test is to replace the part with a new non-returnable new part. When the data base shows the most common cause it is just a suggestion to test that part first.

youd love to see my camaro. ive been running rich for over a year and a half and ive gone through and changed everything i could with the fuel system. misfires pretty badly and can never figure it out

Interesting that the leak was before the MAF though. Typically only see a lean condition it there is a leak post MAF. Nice find ✅💯

Off topic, starting to gather items to do reflash/ reprogramming as per request from many, I got the Mac et9200 elite scan tool, it comes with wiring diagrams and subscription as well as a Bosch j2534. I have spent many many hours on manufacturers web sites trying to figure out the best laptop. What a pain. Yes I found one that will work. Tough book cf54 mk3, seems you need an enterprise grade laptop with a dvd and other amenities like specific usb ports. Seems gm has the highest requirements, yup they really don’t want us to do it so they can continue to rip people off. now the battery tender. Another pain in the rear. powermax pmbc 100 amp. It seems people don’t want anyone to know these things. Thought I would share for those just starting out. I am sure there are many other options out there but this is what I found with the coveted information. Do not get a laptop with a Gen 6 processor. Not supported by GM

A missing MAF gasket is the weirdest one I have seen.

The mass air flow sensors on these newer gm vehicles are shaped weird. They have a tunnel that the air has to flow through, and because of this, the box and air filter must be correct. Cheap aftermarket filters can affect this. Cheap aftermarket replacement air boxes and air lids can affect this. The factory air filters have a pre-filter glued on them, and if that is missing or damaged, it will skew the reading. And of course this means the air filter lid has to be secured properly.

but,,, thats a pre-MAF air leak, that should be irrelevent, the MAF should read that air and compensate.

Might be pulling it past the air filter, air filter is part of the equation of metered air

@@brucecolonna184 But the MAF should still meter it. I'm thinking it's loose at the throttle body too. When he slapped his hand on the box, it was pushing pressure down there too. Probably just has a loose clamp (along with the loose box)

I have seen that once or twice. Would not expect mass air flow to deviate by bypassing air filter.

Yes , can someone explain, is the pcm expecting (tuned) a certain amount of air or pressure when the air filter and air box is sealed ? Because all that air should still be metered

@@jayp1013 still the MAF is doing what its job, and the ECM only trying to compensate for it, the difference is abrupt air can pass through air duct compared to sealed air cleaner box that all air will have to pass through air filter

I think it has to do with how the air flows across the MAF. Turbulent air flow will read differently on the hot wire MAF than a smooth laminar flow. I had a Mazda with lean codes that nobody could figure out. The owner had installed an aftermarket ‘cold’ air intake which changed how the air passed over the sensor. I installed a honeycomb “air straightener” to return the air to a more laminar flow which shockingly fixed the problem (at least enough that it wouldn’t set a lean code).

Yes I agree,...this may be due to unsealed air cleaner box making abrupt air will pass through MAF,compared to sealed box that all air will pass through air filter before MAF.

@@mr.technician2638 Or it's the tube leaking down where it clamps to the throttle body.. Which is what I think it is. (maybe)- :) .. If they were sloppy enough to leave the box uninstalled.. They likely didn't' tighten that clamp either.
