Just wanted to say THANKS DEL!! I just built my very first cigar box guitar (a simple 25" - 3 string - single strat pickup - fretless slide guitar because he's a blues/rock guitarist), a piezo stomp box and a blues slide from a wine bottle. All for someone as a secret santa gift. We could only spend 15 bucks so I used a lot of recuperated materials and your tips and tricks to make it work. And the guy it was for absolutely loves it! Needless to say that I'll be building some more for myself and some friends and hopefully get better at it with every attempt. Thanks a lot!! and keep up the good work ;-)

I love Purple Heartwood; although it has the drawback of being a respiratory and skin irritant, and the purple color usually fades to brown over time. But it sure looks nice when freshly cut. Great info... building my first CBG with your videos as and information source. Wish me luck!

I’m Only half way through this 1st video and had to stop and say thanks, and how true this. I’m on my 4th CBG and it’s been my hardest, even though it’s similar to my last one. I keep making stupid mistakes and doing certain steps too early or too late, because I didn’t really have a plan, even though I knew what I wanted. From now on, this will be my first step. And just maybe I’ll document as I go. Hey guys, if your new to building CBG’s, follow this important step. It will save you a lot of time, money and frustration. Thank you so much brother Del for sharing all that you do. Looking forward to the series. 👍👍👍👍👍

The biggest one for me is fretting a fretboard and properly adjusting the nut slots and the bridge slots so the strings tune properly.

Intonation is a struggle worth winning
@JohnSiedleski
@JohnSiedleski 4 жыл бұрын
@@PuckettCigarBoxGuitar yep that's why I am hoping this gets addressed so I can finally win this struggle. Doing the fret slots by hand with a fret saw, using ordinary wire cutters to cut the frets to somewhat proper length, using a jig I made so I can file them down to perfect length, using a clamp to set the frets into the slots snugly. Don't have cash like most people doing this so I have to make due with what I got. Using welder cleaners to fine cut the nut and bridge slot's but just not getting it perfect yet. The frets are the biggest one as I only have a metal file to use to bring them down with and am hoping for some tips maybe on making a jig that will help me with that. Love your videos and you are the guy that I first came across that got me into making these beautiful instruments. Once I get these done proper (fretting and intonation) I gotta learn how to play them better. Love your instructions on music too. So guess who I'm watching to get better at playing? Lol I do have an online cigar box guitar business and have made a few I sold and my customers were happy with but I don't sell many here in my city in Canada.

Making a nut is an art that takes practice to prefect. If you noticed Gibson went with a 0 fret because they can't afford lutheries anymore.
@JohnSiedleski
@JohnSiedleski 4 жыл бұрын
@@erichuff6945 ok just I didn't understand that fully. So the 0 fret acts as a nut then. Ok. Will be interesting to see it done though. I usually make a nut out of wood to simulate a bone manufactured one. If this will make it easier for me then cool.
@erichuff6945
@erichuff6945 4 жыл бұрын
@@JohnSiedleski yes if you look at a lot of builds people will use a fret larger than the ones they use on the fretboard where the nut goes. Then use a nut that was quickly made, usually cut deeper, just to space the strings. It works fine and some people prefer it. I have guitars that have a 0 fret. For a good example go to CB Gitty's sight and look at those guitars he has for sale. He found out about them four years ago and he thinks it's better than sliced bread.

This is defenitely a series I'm going to follow, interesting to see all of your "loose canon" tips in a comprehensive order. I've seen a lot of them so far and they are very infomative but some order will give it a bit more structure. The alternative title might get you some more attention, I do like that one. Keep up the good work, looking forward for the next one . . Regards, Pim

You said the sun was shining and it's raining, I live in Oklahoma, it does that all the time, I can be standing in my yard where it's sunny, and a couple houses down , it's raining and it has cloud cover. Oklahoma is funny like that. I lived in South Texas off the coast and it did the same thing down there.

Howdy Del, I’ve seen in other videos you suggest to double the thickness of the lid to calculate your measurement for the back angle. Here however, you said lid thickness was 1/4” and you made the back angle 3/8”, which is not quite double. I am building my own bible box guitar with a lid thickness of 3/8” so should I double that to 3/4” for the back angle or is there a different way to calculate it?

I know how to make things and can follow your videos to do the job. The problem I'm running into is how to design a CBG, like how many frets, scale length, how high of an action, piezo/single coil/humbucker pick up, I have know idea how these things relate to the sound of a finished guitar. Does that make any sense? PS Your videos and playing are awesome, I love what you do. Thank you.
