As an Albon fan, it just pains me to see him like this. Last year Albon where he was so confident in the car and really set that Red Bull seat on fire in his rookie season compared to this year where his confidence just seems shot and performances poor is like night and day. I wouldn't mind seeing him going back to Alpha Tauri and potentially regaining his confidence just like Gasly did. Hope he can do better in the future.

I think it expose a deeper problem Red Bull has had with second drivers ever since Max came into the team. Ricciardo was good enough to make up for it but both Gasly and Albon have massively struggled. Clearly they need an experienced driver to come in and help set up that second car.

He doesn't have his families support this year. Having no support networks, regardless of who you are, is a quick slide to Bald Brittney town. Next year, when things are back to normal, we'll see a change in our drivers. Even our top 3 teams have been struggling with mental states this year.

@Yandz The man you may be right. But I think Redbull needs to reassess what it is that they actually want. They have the Redbull juniors, followed by Torro Rosso (Redbull Junior F1) and then the main team. What this model tells me, is they want to find that young talent, and mould them from a young age into 2hat they want. The same as Mercedes and Ferrari do. But, his decisions have made it appear more like "we don't care about the other teams. We are running out of time. We need the best NOW!" And "why are our young drivers so shit, we need 2 Verstappen in these seats". Redbull are expecting too much, and not giving enough back. Ie. Their business model doesn't match Christians desires. Albon and Gasly just need to grow, which they could do with the right leader (As proven by Torro/Tauri). If Redbull actually supported and talked to their drivers, Gasly would have been entirely different, and would have likely maintained the seat. Don't expect the maturity of a 40yr old, from a 20yr old, the first time they've ever been put in front of a camera.

Lewis is not my favorite driver, but I think he is mesmurizing to watch sometimes. The fact he was casually on to lap everyone bar Max on a track they haven't been to in years and then pull 4 seconds out his arse on the restart... Granted that Merc is on another planet but his talent still dragged a dog (2009 mclaren) to 2 wins. I cannot come up with enough superlatives for him.

@Vice Ćuška Yes it was. McLaren and Ferrari were so focused on their 2008 title fight that they didn't properly develop their cars. So when the new aero regulations came in 2009, both were horrible cars which were struggling to even score points. Basically both were the SF1000s of their era. How Hamilton dragged it to wins in Hungary and Singapore and how Raikkonen won in Spa with that car still remains a mystery to me.

@@nassaubahamas5494 You do know that a driver's ability isn't just set for their whole career, right? Hamilton is a considerably better driver than he was 10 years ago, mainly owing to his sheer consistency. Hamilton beat Button in two of their three seasons as teammates; when Button beat him in 2011, that was probably Lewis' worst season of his career. Let's not forget Lewis has had three world champion teammates (Alonso, Button, Rosberg) and he beat them all. How many other drivers on the current grid have had three teammates who have been world champion? I don't think there are any. Red Bull's car is basically Max's ride. Anyone else in the second seat is having to adjust to drive Max's ride. If the driver does not adjust, he is getting the sack. Red Bull may as well just wait for Max's younger brother to grow up to fill the second seat at this point. Hopefully Albono goes to Alpha Tauri with Pierre and they both have success and lots of fun. Albono looks drained of his positivity. Turrible environment for him.

No driver is going to be as good as verstappen so any comparison is gonna make them look like crap so its kind of a toxic position to be in. Red bull I feel needs to get a veteran known quantity driver to drive alongside verstappen and be a clear no.2 to help the team get verstappen challenging for race wins

@Phillip Leite Perez beat Hulk every year they were teammates (except Perez first year at Force India) Neither Perez or Hulk got a podium worthy car (Force India and Sauber), yet Perez managed 8 podiums with those two teams (P2 on Malaysia, but could have been a race win against Alonso, in his rookie year). They are both great drivers, really solid base for a team, they could be the most complete and strong driver line up. But Perez always got the upper hand against Hulk, even in their junior formulas (and even Perez stated in jr formulas that Hulk someday would be his greatest rival because of his talent). So yeah, it’s pretty even, but Perez clearly had showed how he can beat every teammate he has. All of this, plus his amazing financial backup, is a no brainer.

I just feel bad for Albon. He is literally in his 2nd season in F1 and people want him to be out of F1. Quite a lot of people forget Albon came into Red Bull with just half a season in Torro Rosso. Half a season. Just to give you a comparison, Vettel and Verstappen both spent 1 and 1/2 years, Gasly spent 2 years and Ricciardo had 4 full seasons in F1, 2 of them with Torro Rosso. And he has done great for someone so inexperienced. Look at his races in China, Belgium, Brazil, Austria and Mugello. He just needs some support and confidence. Demoting him to AlphaTauri could (probably) make him go the Kvyat way and perform even worse. Whether he deserves his seat in Red Bull, probably a yes from me. He has done quite good for someone so inexperienced, but I admit this season he has been underperforming. You can't compare him to Verstappen, he has 4-5 years of experience, is incredibly talented and dragging the car to places where it has no right to be. But to say he doesn't deserve a seat is just plain dumb and stupid. Of course, the radio message was stupid, but this is too much. Anyway, I wish him the best for the future and hope he becomes successful, he is so nice and humble. Oh, and to whoever who read all of this from the beginning, thank you for your patience.

I agree with some parts. RedBull definitely screwed up on how they managed things after Ricciardo left. They should have given Gasly and especially Albon more time in Torro Rosso and look for a driver somewhere else. However, I do think it would be the right move to demote Albon to Alpha Tauri (yeeting Kvyat out). Albon is just doing a bad job (you can literally not deny this) and maybe back at Alpha Tauri, where there is not so much pressure on his shoulders, he can finish his 'developing time' and have his chance later, as RedBull should have done from the start. Also it would be really exciting to see Albon side to side with Gasly! Anyway, Max deserves a better number 2 driver to limit the strategy options of mercedes and I don't see this happen with Albon any time soon. Again, I would wile to emphasise the fact that RedBull put themselves (and Albon) in this situation and they definitely f'ed up.

I agree with you on most points. i have to be honest i thought that Albon was doomed to fail as soon as they announced him. Mainly due to him being inexperienced and, this may seem harsh, but China aside he didn't seem any better then Kvyat who in my opinion would've been the better choice. Red bull would be far better off hiring an experienced second driver like perez or Hulkenberg. I don't see Albon surviving there much longer. He's costing them points

@Prophet Guru There is a big difference between Formula Renault, Formula 3, etc., and Formula 1. F1 cars are a different beast compared to these cars. Even the jump from F2 to F1 is rather big. So even if you are experienced in single-seaters, it does not guarantee you can be successful in F1.

I think the thing people don’t understand is that albon is actually doing a lot worse than what Gasly was on most tracks, Gasly would always have 2 Ferrari cars in front of him putting him 2 places behind, at the moment if albon is behind a Ferrari he is behind another midfield car & at most he is behind 1 Ferrari. If Gasly got 8th place last year, that’s the equivalent of albon being 10th, so in my opinion he has to go unfortunately.
@gamehuis
@gamehuis 4 жыл бұрын
Ferrari has indeed moved down, but the midfield has caught up quite a bit to Red Bull. Even Verstappen has to give it his all to qualify 3rd and even that isn't always possible (for example he qualified 7th in Hungary). This doesn't excuse Albon's poor race performance but in the age of dirty air track position is king. At the Nürburgring everybody bar the top 3 was stuck behind Leclerc and lost a lot of time. That being said, time to bring the Hulk to Red Bull.

Why is everybody just talking about the race simulations on friday. What about the testing of new parts? If you ban friday testing, and you got a team with a massive margin to the others, they won't be able to close that gap. Also where do you get the support races in?

A top team have the resources to get the job done even if they lose a few hours of practice so you need to do something more drastic and that will only make the sport feel manufactured. Lower performing teams need extra concessions, so extra test days, maybe more component allowance before penalties then they can lift the field and as soon as they start becoming podiums threats take away the concessions. Look at MotoGP they use this method and with 9 races so far this year there have been 7 different winners and 15 different podium finishers of a 22 rider grid.

Just a concept, is the current weakness of the Red Bull driver program a bit of karma for their treatment of drivers who are not their darlings. During the last decade Red Bull have had two darlings (Vettel and Verstappen) who were clearly given preferential treatment at the expense of their team mates. Red Bull denied it constantly, but the way Horner managed disputes made it clear that if you are not the darling you did not matter to them. If I were a young driver and I had the option, I would join any of the other programs from other teams as I would not volunteer to be treated so poorly. This would also explain why the Red Bull program has so many drivers who had no other option (Kyvat, Hartley, Albon) and why their pipeline has dried up.

One of the reasons I thought they might of retired the car is Albon was extremely poor, locked up a handful of times & after locking up against Gasly they had to retire because they had no tyres left to give him & it was for a safety reason. A nice way to introduce a variable to the race would be to require the use of 3 tyre compounds. This would generate many different solutions to run the race and allow for more options on strategy. It would also take away the usual tyre conservation to save a pit stop and also allow more teams to gamble or force a strategy change to apply pressure to a competitor. Just my thoughts, what do you think?

Agree on Albon, but one thing which has been confusing me about the talk of who gets the Red Bull seat is this preference of Hulkenberg over Perez. This has been happening with fans but also now seems to be creeping into media, with Tommy stating his preference for Hulkenberg. Surely when choosing between two drivers who have been teammates you evaluate them against each other in those years. Perez came out on top twice (2015 + 2016, Hulkenberg once in 2014, Perez comes out on top on overall points, also during that period Perez scored 4 podiums to Nico's 0, counter-point is that Hulkenberg outqualified Perez over the three year period 35-24 but of course points is what matters and with the current gap between 2nd and 3rd quickest car, Perez's slight underperformance in qualifying may still put him P4 on grid most races. I would also to point out that Matt said Hulkenberg always "won f1.5" by finishing 7th every year, Nico was 7th once (2018), Checo 7th twice (2016, 2017). I just don't understand, on data and track records why Nico is spoken about first in this conversation, let's also not forget Perez has just had back to back 4th places so is also on great form. I do rate Nico and really hope he has a F1 seat next year but if that Red Bull seat is available then it surely, popularity aside, should go to Sergio Perez.

I don’t think he’d sign for Red Bull to be honest he doesn’t like teams with high profiles that much, because they expect him to do advertising all the time, he even got a special clause on his last Ferrari contract that stated his advertising would be limited. Red Bull is nearly as bad as Ferrari when it comes to this. So unless they offered him an exorbitant amount of money and said he could do limited advertising I doubt he’d go to Red Bull or a top team in general, in his words “Leave me alone I know what I’m doing” he just wants to race.

In 2016, the Merc was developed to suit Rosberg's driving style. There were many elements of it that Hamilton didn't like. It wouldn't surprise me if the Red Bull has been developed around Max's driving style which is no doubt very different to Alex's and probably Pierre's racing style as well. The same can probably be said of the current Ferrari, being set up to suit Leclerc rather than Seb. With Hulk being a particularly tall driver, would be interesting to see if the car can be set up successfully for both drivers at RB.

If its only down to the car why Lewis is winning, how come Bottas is marginally ahead of Max who has had 3 DNF's? the problem with F1 is not Merc dominance, its clueless pundits and clueless podcasters reading from this script they pass around to each other where they are only allowed to say "If Lewis is winning F1 is boring".

I think that speaks more about Bottas than the car. Car is several tenths ahead of the rest on average, which puts it in a class of its own. That's problematic for fun competition for the top step.

@@bartonez123 No the real problem is F1 is absolutely full of lazy incompetent journalists who rather than getting their fingers out and engaging the fans, have decided to slag the sport off because they don't like to see this amazing history that unfolding and they have manged to gaslight the fans into going along with this narrative. In years to come when we're out of the EU begging for relevance and moaning that we don't have any British drivers challenging for titles, we will look back on this time with envy and rightly feel anger at the useless lazy journalists that are currently ruining this moment of national pride.

Bottas has now had 2 races out of the points that weren't his fault as well. The engine failure this race and the tire failing one lap too soon in Silverstone. So if Max had come third instead of one of the DNFs, they'd be on basically equal points

In my opinion, Best Driver lineup for RedBull Teams next season : RedBull need drivers to challenge Mercedes consistently. Give Nico a few practice sessions and see what he can do. RBR : Max Verstappen, Nico Hulkenberg Apparently a sister team and not junior team now. Should have resources to produce a good car which two drivers can drive. Pierre isn't going anywhere and Alex can do better than Kvyat. Those two can challenge for top 6 regularly with a car that suits them. AT : Pierre Gasly, Alex Albon

@Gravity's Rainbow I'm convinced Rosberg could have won a second title. Hamilton has had some dips in form over the last 3 seasons and it's possible Nico could have capitalised where Bottas couldn't.

@@alexrobertssings Nah, I don't think he could've a 2nd title. I am a Rosberg fan, but you have to admit he was helped quite a lot by Hamilton's horrendous luck, like in Malaysia where his engine puffed out when he was leading and Rosberg came 3rd. And no, Hamilton has improved and is the most consistent driver on the grid. I admit, this season he is a bit off, but he is incredibly consistent so Rosberg probably could have capitalised only in places like Monza or Russia (which Bottas capitalised on).

My solution to Friday practice: offer the drivers with cars in the bottom half of the grid extra practice. Nicholas Latifi struggling with Turn 1 and constantly flat spinning into the gravel? Give him 8 more hours of practice, that way the team’s engineers can learn as well, and maybe he could finally learn how to avoid blocking other drivers on the grid.

If 'too much data' is the problem, and I agree, than why not prevent the teams from gathering all the data on a Friday? Just turn of all the telemetry, HDD and whatnot. The drivers and teams will still want to get out there for car setup, testing tires, new parts etc. Of course they can still take notes, but it might at least prevent the extreme predictability of the rest of the race weekend we have now.

Re: Fridays, how about sensors are turned off.. (or computers etc..) Only feedback is from the drivers. It still means, the drivers are given chance to find some sweet spots, they get used to the tyre and different setups and the commercial holders get they branding on the screen etc. The engineers and decision makers in the team are then limited to Saturday & Sunday.. thoughts?

@@shp27493 Yes, aware cares requires computers and sensors to operate. Let me clarify, cut out the feedback given to the engineers from the car. Following from WTF1 point about developing a specific tyre for Fridays, I am suggesting there could be someway of making Friday practice about driver and machine only, removing the data and engineers for one day to increase racing opportunities on Saturday and Sunday by putting drivers teams more on the edge.

Regarding Lando's podium chances, before he suffered his engine issues, he was comfortably holding Perez at 1.5 seconds. After Lando started drifting back but before he retired and brought out the safety car, Perez was catching Ricciardo at a decent pace. The safety car cause by Lando gave Ricciardo a cheap second pitstop and that saved his race. Without that I think its a relatively easy podium for Lando.

Around the 8min mark they talk about Friday practice sessions. I have a solution that most will find interesting but the viability is questionable. Instead of FP1 or FP2, could we have a reserve driver race? (Doesn’t have to be a championship). Yes I understand this is essentially F2 but a lot of the reserves aren’t f2 drivers. It gives people an opportunity to see the cars driven in anger (with current spec regs). The races don’t have to be long, are only really for bragging rights. And as much as I loved seeing Hulkenberg come back for this race, it means that should anything happen to a current driver the reserve is there with some experience to jump in if need be.

Take Tommy's idea and make Friday a standalone event. Have the morning be a practice session so drivers can get running time on the circuit and the afternoon a sprint race that doesn't factor into the championship standings. The catch is all Friday running can only be done on the C1 compound tires, or inter/wets if needed. (Yes, tire rule would even apply to junior drivers running in morning practice sessions) Saturday is one normal practice session followed by quali. Race on Sunday.

We've got some rule changes coming up to limit CFD/wind tunnel time etc based on championship position in the prior year. The FIA could do something similar based on current championship positions for how long teams can run in Friday practice. As it is now, Williams would get the most and Mercedes the least amount of time. This could be a good way of bringing the race pace closer for the whole field.
