Ford updates the much loved Explorer SUV for 202 with mixed results. The Ford Explorer originally arrived in 2001 and has been a staple in family transportation but now the competition is fierce. The latest Ford Explorer is built on a new rear wheel drive architecture for improved handling but the ride is rather rough. Power now comes with a standard 300hp 2.3L turbocharger, or EcoBoost, 4-cylinder engine or an optional 3.0L turbocharged V6 in the top trims. Power goes to standard AWD through a new 10-speed automatic transmission that does a good job but at times it searches for the correct gear. The interior of the all-new Ford Explorer still has room for 7-passengers over three-rows but the third row isn't very comfortable and others do a better job. The front seats, however are amazingly comfortable with excellent padding. The Sync infotainment system is a standard 8-inch unit or an optional 10.3-inches. The instrument cluster can also be equipped with a virtual cockpit. The materials inside this new Explorer are what let it down the most. The plastics and fit of the materials is second rate compared to other new entries in the mid-size utility space like the Kia Telluride and Hyundai palisade. Overall, this new Explorer is a missed opportunity, it should have come with a better interior to compete in todays market.

I bought the Ford 2020 Explorer XLT. I am very happy. I had a 2017 Ford Edge. I had no complaints but my wife wanted more room. Prior to the Edge, I had the Ford Taurus. I loved the Taurus. What was so great about the Taurus was despite its size, I got up to 32 MPG on the highway. The Edge was a good vehicle but a bit bland. I had the smaller screen with no navigation. The seats were cloth. The Explorer was a big upgrade. I have leather seats. I have the 8 inch screen which has Android Auto. The extra safety equipment really is welcome. Wha tI really like about the vehicle is that I can easily get 28 MPG even with all the space. I bought the Explorer with 0% during the COVID 19 outbreak. I got several thousand dollars off the MSRP. While the base price might be higher than other vehicles, the actual purchase price for the Explorer was less. With kids and bicycles and everything else I have to worry about with this car, the last thing I am concerned about is whether the silver plastic fits tightly against the black plastic. The Explorer is pretty zippy with its over 300 HP. It gets great mileage. Everyone is comfortable -- particularly me in the driver's seat. It is what it is -- a great family vehicle.

This is an Atlas Blue Explorer XLT with the upgraded 20” wheels -the exact Explorer I bought and drive every day. I knew it was a 4-cyl EcoBoost before buying - and I did so because it’s a great blend of power and efficiency and it can tow 5,300 lbs. (Many consumers don’t need a V6 or V8 anymore). I enjoy the acceleration too - it gets to 75-80 very quickly when joining traffic. Recently went to the beach with this Explorer at full capacity, and the two hour ride was comfortable, mpg efficient (~19 mpg), and enjoyable. Glad they pointed out the left foot standing rest pedal provided for the driver. The interior gets a lot of hate, but what they didn’t show is the interior light blue accent lighting that shines down on the silver panels in the console. It’s obvious when the sun is down. For the second row, there is an entry step next to the seats for ease of access and the middle console is floor level so passengers can easily pass through the middle. The closing factor for me was this: even though it is a base model, the 2020 Explorer XLT looks tough And sporty, but also is more than capable and efficient, too. Something I’d drive.

Agree! If someone owned a 20 year old Ford, and had never been inside another vehicle, they would probably like to trade up to this one. Otherwise, nope. It needs an emergency refresh to the interior.

1st thing USA shud do is just stop thinking they r best n everything like how Drump sayz.. first b humble. Watch the competition carefully. First competition to look out for is Germany.. errr ATLAS... I mean U ve to sit inside to see how damn spacious it is 2nd the Koreans they ve become masters of interior designs, heck even Lincolns don't feel as luxurious as Hyundais. 3. Marketing, Ford cud ve given a diesel Explorer... fools at Ford don't think wise... when all competition is banging on mpg just give a 3.0v6 diesel or at least a 2.0 twin turbo diesel option... the mpg will just give Ford a new dimension. Ford is full of fools. Even common man has more intelligence than people at Ford.

I have a 2013 Ford Explorer with over 460,000 miles on it. I purchased it as a family hauler with about 60,000 miles on it. I unintentionally had to use it as a courier vehicle for 97% of those miles. I haven't changed any major parts or had any major parts failures!?!?! I must have one of the best built fords on the planet!

I am not a Ford fan boy. I will say though that driving the twin turbo V6 version of the explorer is a whole lot more fun than driving any of the other main stream brands, like Mazda, Hyundai, Kia, Toyota. The problem is that they want about 60 grand in the US for the v6 trim level. For someone who has driven rear drive cars all their life, this is one of the truly fun SUVs to drive. I agree with everything though that the reviewer said about the interior.

Great review. We considered the 2020 Ford Explorer but ended up getting a new 2019 VW Atlas that like you said had the better interior, space, and the 3rd row was so comfortable. Plus we liked the 6 year, 72000 mile bumper to bumper warranty that the VW had.

We just upgraded from a 2013 to a 2020. Had literally ZERO issues w the old one after putting 122k miles on it. Wiper blades, tires, gas and oil is all we did to it over the course of 7yrs so we decided to put our trust in the Explorer once again.

@@seinsmeld13 Times are changing my man. Just did a short road trip into Forgetmenot Pond and got 15.3 km/L on my 2020 RAV4. That's 35 mpg. A small Corolla is rated at 38 highway so it's excellent fuel economy. The hybrid RAV4 and Venza (upcoming) easily get close to 40 mpg in all driving scenarios

The fit and finish of my 2020 RAV4 is pretty great but I'm still not completely sold on the whole Toyota is a reliability champ, certainly not after their engine block recall and two other recalls that have to do with the suspension.

The day I own a Kia will be a sad day. I bought a 2020 Explorer ST, and except for early computer problems, it's been great. The bad reviews center around the price and the 3rd row seating, which is ridiculous. Go buy a Jeep Compass or something. When I see that red ST emblem shining down on the pavement at night, I know where the money went...awesome.

Owned a 2nd gen Explorer and loved it, had it for over ten years! Tested 5th gen to change the old one, but I noticed several int. built quality issues so decided to go for a Fusion instead. Had the Fusion for two years and got rid of it as built quality was a major issue (engine and ext design were very good though). I was truly excited for the sixth gen Explorer, but after seeing it in the auto show and seeing several reviews, it looks like (sadly) it is not worth a try. I hope Ford gets their act together, in the meantime this fan went somewhere else. PS - Zach, keep an eye out for the coffin dancers... hehe

I really like the exterior design of this Explorer, especially in the top trims. Ford has made very subtle changes to the previous generation design that, I think, work well here. I had an Explorer Sport which I believe was a 1997 edition. The engine went at around 30,000 km. The engine was replaced under warranty. The dealership was involved in an accident while road testing it. I filed a complaint to get my money refunded however my claim was denied because of this accident. I received $1,000 from Ford to be used on a replacement vehicle. That voucher was eventually put in our recycling box. That was my last Ford. Would I buy another Ford? Seems the guy had his mind made up from the get go and not really budge much at all. Looking at the used car market these Explorers are holding value quite well. Apparently a lot of folks are fine with it. I see them out and about a lot. I think they look nice. I suggest you buy what you like. Most vehicles now days compete with each other a lot. As the owner of a 2021 Explorer ST I have to say I agree 100% with what Zach said, the fit and finish is still poor for $66,000 ST model. Zach didnt even speak about the SYNC3 system and how its the laziest design of all three domestic OEM multimedia platforms. U-Connect and MyLink kill SYNC3 and new SYNC4 isnt much better. If Ford doesn't improve their quality quickly they will be left in the dust by the Koreans. I have driven a full load Telluride and I do agree its nice but slam the doors and you still get that tinny Korean car sound. In 2021 they did improve interior materials and they did fix transmission "Hunting" issues with software.

The exterior design of the explorer is gorgeous. I could never drive a palisade it looks horrendous 🤢 Also there's the ST for few people who actually care about how these things drive at high speeds anymore. Admittingly it's overpriced but still awesome... bravo Ford for keeping rwd alive.

Those that live in mountains prefer the eco boosts especially to tow because it doesn’t lose power like naturally aspirated engines do at altitude. The f150 ecoboosts both out tow and are faster then the v8 available

Keep in mind this is built to be a police cruiser. Something you wouldn't want to do with the Korean twins. Just bought the Explorer. I think it's built for the long haul.

American vehicles have always been associated with power and big engines. Even though the 4 cylinder is adequate it is kind of weird to have it in a large 3-row rear wheel drive SUV.

Ford Explorer 2021 purchased on last week of January 2021 week 1. engine block heater leak(car stopped on highway twice in freezing cold) week 2. door and window make noises week 3. window air leak. roof rail loose week 5. transmission gone total mileage to date only 6600km vehicle @ dealership for more than 4 weeks for repairs. I have asked Ford to replace it as there is obviously something very wrong with the car and it is not safe to drive around. But there response there is no lemon law in Canada and they can only repair it. I said enough is enough, in two months car has been at dealership for more than 5 weeks. It is impacting immensely my family, Health and work. So I made some signs and sat infront of dealership as of protest but instead of offering help They called police on me and my 4 years old, 8 years old and 11 years old kid. When investigated officer response was to Ford manager “I would be doing the same if you had sold me the lemon/ defective new car and I can’t interfare it is a civil matter” Please help me as I am very helpless. I never expected customer services/rights could go this low in Canada. Thankyou. I have made complaints to Ford Canada. The only 2020 explorer worth getting is the ST. It highlights the new rear wheel based platform. It handles better than anything in its class thanks to a near perfect weight distribution. The interior quality is definitely a let down for 60k...

the exterior design is A+ and has that aggressive look that the competitors lack - i.e. hyundais/kias look too bulgy and mini-van like. the engine is pretty snappy, however, the turbo-charged engine does bring some long term longevity questions. from here, unfortunately, things tend to go downhill from here.

When I drove the Explorer as a loaner I agree on the transmission its to many gears for a 4 banger. I also didnt like the driver seating as my right arm is always hovering and gets old quick. I feel as if the seat is missing a right adjustable armrest.

I used to be a huge Ford fan after leasing a 2015 XLT Crew Cab with the 3.5 ecoboost , it will take a miracle for me to gamble on a Ford again. Quality is not job one. Excellent review and it's important for Ford to get the picture. At these prices you need a competitive product. I think that it's a miss compared to where the market is moving. I think the Korean twins are positioned for the win with even Toyota caught off guard.

That 2.3L engine might be really good if paired to a strong hybrid system. Save on fuel and get the missing torque that it currently lacks. But the key here is 'strong.' Not the pathetic excuse they put in the new f-150.

Andrea and Zack, I am a huge fan! However, I do not agree with your review this time for the following reasons: - rear while drive biased and near 50-50 weight distribution mean more fun to drive (unlike palisade, telluride, and CX-9 that are front wheel drive biased) - Outgoing model had so many problems yet sales figures were very high. I expect the same for this model - Explorer third row has the highest head room compared to its competitors - 2.3 L engine with 300 hp and 310 lb-ft is not fast enough? That’s 6.3 seconds in a 0-100. It’s a full second faster than the CX-09! - 255 tires are among the widest tires (improves handling and braking) One con for the new explorer is the lack of all safety features on the base model. Pilot and Highlander offer them across the board.

What a shame! This could've been sooooo good! RWD, nice exterior design and the best engine options in segment. But the gruff transmission, lack of 3rd row space, un-competitive pricing and that interior by Fisher Price are just deal breakers. ONLY die hard Ford people would buy this.

@@johnholst True. The similar transmission problem is also on Mustang 2.3t. Ford is my favorite US car maker. I really wish they come back strong. They need to work on details and car demands will then follow.

I like the fact that Ford went back to a rear wheel drive based platform and that the styling is evolutionary instead of revolutionary. However, I think that that the 2.3 Ecoboost is not really a great choice for a vehicle that will be potentially loaded up to it's maximum ability more often than your average Ranger. I also have to agree that at over $50,000 for an entry level plus crossover/SUV it misses the mark big time. The fit and finish of your test vehicle was not too hot and you're right it just doesn't come across as a vehicle that represents good value at this price point. Ford had an opportunity to capture new customers with this vehicle, but they dropped the ball and may find that the market share that they had is dwindling. Too bad because there is potential here, but it looks like it's potential that is lost.

Enjoyed the commentary and the humor LOL though I really don’t see the appeal of the exterior of this vehicle. Also, the interior is almost Fisher Price for a brand new vehicle in 2020. That vertical screen is hilarious. It’s so bad. I like the look of the ST but man for the price... no thanks.

My point is that there are people who will buy American no matter what, without doing research or test driving. This in spite of the fact that many “American” cars are built abroad and many “imports” are built in the US.

JR R...Really? From the outside, I think it looks great. Kinda reminded me of the Range Rover Sport. The problem is when you have to get in this beast. There, it looks really cheap and nasty.

You're a moron. This platform is rwd biased, with a longitudinal engine setup. Superior handling characteristics similar to many premium brands. The formula was great, approach not so much. You clearly know nothing about "downmarket". The design is literally the best part about this car.

So the big takeaway here is typical crap interior fit and finish from Ford. As usual, they find themselves behind practically every single import at the same price point. It's really a shame, because the Explorer is a sharp looking vehicle. Great review.

I think the platform is shared with the ranger/bronco in many ways which means it’s already a 10 year old architecture. Hence the subpar ride quality

I agree with this review, very honest. The interiors in these new Explorers are so cheap looking. Fisher Price interior. I do agree with Andrea 100% on the exterior looks. I’ve enjoyed the boxier, more masculine looks of this Explorer but everything else is a let down.

Well i got the 2021 ST and I never had an explorer before. Yes the Korean Telluride and the Palisade they are great cars however it doesn’t have that solid feel that the ST have and also don’t forget the Korean brothers have 291 hp. And the St has 400 hp. also Ford handles better because is a rear bias all wheel drive and the Telluride is front bias. I test drove all three of them and agree the telluride interior is better but the power and handling Ford does much better.

At the beginning of the video they call this Explorer "the base model". Well, it is an XLT, but its equipped with so many extras (comfort package, tow package, upgraded wheels, interior, 202a package with navigation) its hardly a "base" model. So the vehicle can become too expensive with pricey upgrades. I bought an XLT reasonably equipped for $37,000 U.S. And at @ 12:00 he says "I don't know why you would buy this over a Telluride or a Pallisade." I know style is subjective but the back of the Pallisade is hideous looking. I sat in it anyway and immediately had to get out to the salesman's dismay. The headrest in its furthest back position is still pitched so far forward there was no way to be in a comfortable driving position. The dashboard came up way too high and the seat was too low. And the amount of buttons (poorly defined) on the center stack rivaled button configurations from GM of the 1990's.

Hmm, no idea why anyone would buy this over Koreans and others? I’m looking at all but want a better drivetrain with rear-wheel drive. That leaves all but the Durango, 4Runner, Grand Cherokee and this new Explorer. Grand Cherokee is going to be new so maybe will wait to see what that’s like. I think this Explorer drives better than the CX-9. I’ll take a more standard interior with a superior drive and tech over front wheel drive bias and near luxury interiors. Yah it is disappointing compared to lesser drivetrains and nicer interiors, but it is a trade off. Hopefully a refresh will fix these issues.
