I wouldn't be surprised if the c8 with z51 package beats the gt500 in a lot of categories. The gt500 still needs to put up faster times than the zl1 1le which completely obliterated the gt350r. Even in stock zl1 form with all the luxuries it whooped the gt350r. You can say all you want about the hp disparities but I bet the gt500 barely beats the 1le if it manages to. But to compare this car to a c8 is pointless and there's a reason why they have never been put head to head. Why, because the corvette has always been in another league of performance than the stang. At the end of the day I hope all these American cars start sticking it to the euro and japanese cars as they have been doing lately.

@@highjix I completely, going by what was actually said. They tried to compare the C8 or possibly a higher spec. version, possibly to the SHELBY GT500. Not a run of the mill Mustang. Also, like the engineer stated, this Shelby GT500 is close to a supercar because of it's HP, it's handling capabilities and it's being built for endurance, ie; cooling, braking, etc. It will be tested against it's competition by every car reviewer and magazine under the sun. Comparing this car to a run of the mill GT is like comparing diamonds to cubic zirconia. The two cars may be cross-shopped to some extent but in this particular market, buyers tend to be brand loyal, to say the least. Mustang buyers are very loyal. Chevy buyers are as well, particularly Corvette owners looking at an entirely new and exciting direction for the car. This car will also attract first time Corvette buyers. It is revolutionary. BTW, with all of those folks whining about the lack of a manual in a C8, it's going to come as a shock to them that Ford, too, has passed on one, as well.

The C8 is to be compared to all sports cars and mainly exotics. Ford had no intentions of competition with Ford. They were looking at the big fish. It’s track time might beat the GT500 as it’s a more balanced car with superb traction. The C8 will be quicker 0-60 than the GT500 due to better traction and superb balance. It’s quarter mile might be a few tenths slower than GT500. That’s if the GT500 gets traction on a good track. Look at the Hellcat. Dodge threw in a ton of Horsepower and it still gets beat at the quarter mile and track. Just wait till the Z06 comes out. Then the ZR1 with 1000hp all wheel drive. They are going after Bugatti and everything under. They will be the most dominant company. They now have the recipe to kill everything in every category.

@Harry. B. Renner. jr. Ford is not going full electric with the Mustang. they are making a hybrid version and also a mustang "inspired" crossover that will be all electric. The mustang itself will remain a gas powered car. As far as Ford killing off passenger cars, it makes sense from a business standpoint. They do not sell very many anymore and in fact they do not even sell enough to offset R&D on new models. They focus their energy on where sales are, which is crossovers, trucks, and sports cars. They're also being smart by getting on the all electric wagon now, having at least one model that is full electric is key for an automaker right now. Also, touching on your first reply to my comment... I'm a Chevy guy, but I have respect for many other brands and models out there. While I drive a Chevy my wife drives a Nissan. To be honest in this day and age most manufacturers are really putting out good vehicles. Some are better equipped than others but overall they're all decent and priced competitively.

I still agree, the corvette should be pitted against cars in its own class. The mustang is a pony car, the comaro is a pony car. The corvette is a sports exotic and should be compared with Astin Martin or ferrari. Sure, you can compare American cars of similar value, and that's what is happening here. But all too often you hear people comparing Corvette to Mustang and its not the same thing. It's kinda like comparing a minivan to an SUV because they both have 7 seats, four doors and a lift gate.

Haven't since the 50's. Unless of course you want to play by Chevy rules and just match it up with the next highest competitor, the Ford GT....and....well....we all know how that would turn out.

Thought I have to say, for the first time in years, I think the Ford Mustang is a much nicer looking car than that eyesore GM just put out. A GT40 is a better match but it's still of higher level than the petty corvette Ford needs to remake the Thunderbird to fight the Corvette or as it was also known the Corvette killer. Yeah, Roman is a Ford fan so there is no surprise if there is some Ford bias here in this video and I expected that and most of us are a little biased toward the vehicles we like anyway. But not sure if they could get a C8 for the video so can’t be sure it was full on bias because TFL is usually good when it comes to getting comparable vehicles for such comparisons (and usually they will say if it’s not comparable) so they do conduct fair testing. However, this did come across as a Ford GT 500 infomercial, I can’t lie lol 😝

IMHO the GT 500 is more likely to be cross shopped with the Challenger Hellcat Red Eye. Fully loaded they're pretty close price-wise, and have similar HP / Torque numbers. I think that the Mustang has the more premium look and feel, especially on the interior, where the Challenger is Walmart cheap, but the Challenger is the more practical ride due to it's usable back seat, and generous trunk capacity.

That Walmart bit is subjective...granted, I own a Challenger so I'm biased, but the Challenger interior to me looks/feels nicer than the current generation Mustang...little things, like dark, durable switchgear , and silly as it sounds, a dark background for the infotainment system, the general ergonomics of the switchgear, etc. Biggest ball dropped by FCA was the upper dash material (and frankly, after a few days in the car, that becomes a non-issue, since it's not really a touch point) and the upper door cards (which are a touch point).

@@Croak1 I never did understand Chrysler / Plymouth / Dodge when it came to interior appointments. I had three friends back in the late 60's. One owned a Hemi Charger, one owned a Plymouth Barracuda with a 383 Magnum, and the other owned a big block 440 Dodge Super Bee. They all ran like scalded rabbits, but the interiors were plastic junk, cheap carpet, and vinyl. I used to joke that my refrigerator had a better interior than my buddy's 'Cuda. I don't see why Korean and Japanese manufacturers are able to put better materials in the cabins of their $25,000 to $35,000 line-up of vehicles, while FCA is still going with bargain basement stuff in cars that cost many thousands more.

Keep in mind, and no mention was made in the video of this. The Shelby GT 500 is the top of the line performance model. They are comparing it to the "Base" model C8 "Stingray". And the Base Stingray compares very well with the Shelby GT 500. So what does that tell you? As Corvette has done before, they release the new Base Model then in another year they turn out the Performance Corvette. The C8 Corvette "Zora" should follow shortly. The "Zora" will truly be a World Class Supercar.!!! Also, the Vette is a "Sports Car" and the Shelby GT 500 is really a "Pony Car". They are comparing apples to oranges here. Compare the C8 Zora Corvette (when it comes out) to the 2017 Ford GT, a true "Sports Car". Over the past several years, in Head to Head competition (IMSA racing), the current Corvette C7R has many more wins over the Ford GT. Just Saying! Don't get me wrong, I love the Shelby GT 500 as well as the Ford GT.! At $500,000 I could never afford a Ford GT. When available, the Corvette Zora will be very similar in performance, if not exceed, the Ford GT. And the Zora will be attainable ...probably around $150,000 fully equipped.

I have a GT350, am replacing it with a GT500. I already know the base C8 will be faster than my GT500 until about 100 mph, then they will even out a little better. The C8 will definitely outhandle my GT500 as well. The Vette is aimed at the European sports car type market, the Mustang is a muscle car. Kinda like comparing a metal lathe to a sledgehammer. I also have a C8 on order but have already re-sold it to a good friend for my cost before I even get it. I prefer muscle cars and the C8 was an impulse buy. Dumb, but I get out with no cost to me. Can’t wait to get both on the road, my buddy and I have steak dinner on the line when we race each other. He likes Ferrari, I like trucks! Hahaha. That’s just the way it is.

Ford didn't want to discuss 0-60 because it's not gonna be that great, this motor makes its power high in the rpm range so it needs time to spool up. That's what happens when you go small displacement and forced induction, there's less low end torque to get you out of the hole.

I think our host mis-spoke. The Ford engineer said the engine made about 850 HP before the parasitic losses of the supercharger. Auto manufacturers have never quoted HP at the wheels (and they aren't going to start now) because the higher (at the) crank numbers sound better for marketing reasons. I think the standard assumption is the driveline friction eats up about 15% of the crank rating, so look for RWHP to be about 650.

Engineer then said you need to account for the massive parasitic loss (because it takes probably a 100 horsepower just to turn that supercharger). Which implies you need a totality of a 850-900 hp engine in order to generate a true 760 crank horsepower engine. This widely known in the car world. Same with the ZR1. You need a totality of 850-900 horsepower to get it's 755 crank horsepower.

Mustang always had hood problems 1996 4.6 hood flew up at 150 and flew off the car. 1999 svt cobra 4.6 hood had an induction on it it also blew up doing 75-80 and induction sat right into the wipers and crushed the windshield on road trip texas to NY and did that half way on trip and I completed it that way.

And even more tragic, we will not see it at Le Mans (WEC) either. Ford with Chip Ganassi Racing took in over 19 victories and 22 poles, and a Le Mans win in 2016. But Ford said "thats enough, we did what we wanted to do". But most of the reasons are unclear of Ford pulling out of competition, most likely due to the exuperant cost to maintain this GT program. Its a shame, would have loved to seen the new Corvette and GT going into battle, ganging up on Porsche junk!

Not sure if you know that Ford is producing 35 GT MKIIs for race only configuration that should get into the hands of qualified racers and prolong the GT car a little longer. Price tag is $1,200,000. A guy that works for Multimatic says this car on the dyno puts out well over 700 HP, and with other goodies will be a real rocket on the track. Would give my left......ear to see it run with the C8!

@@Loulovesspeed Im glad to see that Ford wasn't afraid to deliver a full blown out verion of the great GT. The MK2 version is a little over the top at 1.2 mill though. Hell, the base price for the regular GT came in at 450,000. Unfortunately, again this is really an all purpose built "track only" racecar rather than an production built sports car like the GT. Highly unlikely we'll see this car in competition meeting sanctioning body and regulation rules from the various racing series very soon. Even Ford has said " It was engineered independently of race series rules, regulations and limitations" So whose its customers? But that being said, the horsepower from that twin-turbocharged 3.5 liter EcoBoost engine is quite impressive. Have always been a fan of this drivetrain combo. And even if they made a detuned, stripped down version to meet regulations, it really would be not be worth the time and cost to see this supercar at its full potential!! I hope to see this car in action sometime. It would be a shame not to see this in competition somewhere!! What to you think? TY

Thanks for the review, Roman! Man I wish this were an apples-to-apples comparison. GT500 is Ford's flagship. No I don't count the Ford GT. So an apples-to-apples comparison wouldn't be a GT500 to a Z51 C8. It would be a GT500 to a ZR1 C8. My guess is that when Chevy drops the mid-engined ZR1 bomb, it's going to be a nuke. What I'm afraid of is that by the time Ford picks up the gauntlet to respond to the C8 ZR1, that GT500 answer will be all-electric. When the sportscar/muscle-car game becomes all electric, there won't be a point anymore. Look at Tesla. They're supposed to be the young, fresh, impassioned brand of electric car. Real world results: impressive 0-60 & quarter-mile times, but that's it. It's a one-trick pony. There's no feedback in the steering, there's no sound to send chills down your spine, there's no manual transmission to make you feel connected, oh and if driving is just too much for you, just engage the autopilot. Does that sound like a "driver's car" to you?

I can't recall exactly which source/rumor, but I think both next gen Mustang and the C8 are going to get a hybrid powertrain, not full out electric yet. But I heard (fact or rumor) that the next gen Stang is gonna be based on an existing Ford crossover platform instead of a sedan. Magazines estimate the size of the new Mustang to be as large as the current Challenger, potentially widening the performance gap between the Vette and Stang. @@kylenguyen2130 I think you're partially correct. I read somewhere (or saw on TFL Car) that the next "Mustang inspired crossover" was going to be the "Mach 1". And while that moniker has traditionally been a Mustang title, there is speculation that it will become it's own vehicle, instead of replacing the Mustang entirely. As far as the electric powertrain being partial, you could be totally correct. I was more looking at it from the perspective of current politics crying outrage over climate change. Look at how long Ferrari and other supercar brands have had "partial" electric powertrains in production, and it just seems to fit with the "feel" of today. When the combustible engine leaves performance vehicles, I'm afraid we "car guys" will be extinct. What will be left to be excited about in cars?

Research Ford GT. The only thing Ford about it this may be the engine, and the emblem. Everything else was designed and built by the Europeans. Mustang has always been a straight line car. If you want to go fast in a straight line, Mustang is the car for you. The real joy of racing is on the track. And Corvette has been the king for years.
