Haval is arguably the first Chinese passenger car brand to establish a strong foothold and market presence in South Africa, and their success has been largely due to this, the H2, a compact SUV that rivals players such as the VW T-Cross, Hyundai Creta and Honda HR-V. in pre-Covid times, Haval was selling over 400 of these a month; a very healthy figure indeed.
But it has one key difference, it is exceptionally well priced compared to its many rivals. In fact, you can barely get into a VW Polo for the same price.

If you came here because you are considering purchasing one second hand, here is an honest review of the H2. I purchased one for my wife as a daily drive and have driven it myself a few times and this is the most honest feedback I could give. In terms of its drive, it is very comfortable and deals well with cornering and takes on bad roads, bumps and gravel roads well. Interior is decent with what you get as standard in comparison to its class but the touch screen is very unresponsive and delayed and is most definitely not up to par with other vehicles in this class. The sound system is really not good at all. You can tune the sound settings to sound as good as possible, but its still not that good at all, and the volume adjustment is even worse. Just when you are looking to play a banger of a song as loud as you can, the volume tops out and stops going up. You can drive through a residential area with it on full volume at 1 in the morning and very few people will complain or even notice. One very annoying thing is that there is just one USB jack in the entire car sitting in the central arm rest and unless you put your phone inside the central arm rest compartment there is no where else to put your phone while driving. Another annoying thing is once a notification comes up in your instrument cluster, for example tyre pressure warning, then you cannot exit the warning and as a result you cannot view anything else on the small screen until you resolve the issue. Even restarting your car wont help. Performance wise the car has more than enough power for its size at around 110kw but the delivery of it is very frustrating. There is severe turbo lag which results in needing to calculate every single overtake you do with precision. The turbo starts kicking in only over 3500rpm and you need to really rev the car out to reach its peak power which really effects the fuel economy. The auto gearbox feels like it is about 5 years behind to other vehicles in this class. It is very slow to select gears while driving or overtaking, so would opt for a manual if you are considering this vehicle. Because between the turbo lag, and the auto gearbox, overtaking becomes a very complicated situation sometimes. If you are a regular city driver and you want something economical then do not even consider this vehicle. Some city driving and highway it is fine, but if it will mainly be city driving then its a NO. You can get about 700km on a tank if you drive highways in a very conservative fashion, but the second you sit in traffic its fuel economy suddenly becomes that of a V8 landcruiser. This vehicle does not like sitting in traffic when it comes to fuel economy at all. Still remains a good quality vehicle for its price.

Drove one to the Kruger and can't say the trip was any less enjoyable compared to most luxury SUV's I've driven to the same destination in the past. Only small for things like coolers and big luggage. Great value for money

What I love about the H2 is asking the dealership what was traded in for it. Last year I drove a lovely Astra J sedan 1.4T Enjoy that was traded in for an H2 because it needed a new clutch. Haval replaced the clutch and that drove like a steal at price - I gave it the beans. If you don't want to drive the H2, ask what was traded in for it - you might have an even greater deal on your hands.

I bought the 1.5T Lux Auto in January. Turbo intake pipe blew off after 450km's on the way to Kruger, but was able to put it back myself. Suzuki Nelspruit were very helpful and quick in checking my work and resetting the engine warnings Done another 2000km's and starting to love it. Don't put it in economy - drives like a dog, but standard mode it is great. Turbo lag takes a bit of getting used to especially when cold. Brilliant car on gravel and highway. Wife borrows it once a week to go to work now, after bitterly complaining that I had bought a lemon. Very sad its only Apple Carplay because I will never own an Apple product.

I love the H2, I remember when you reviewed the first generation in 2017 or at least first in SA. It had almost everything and it was the City model. Even the smaller T-Cross couldn't get lower than 300k for the entry level that was introduced some months ago. And it looks so basic with scratchy plastic everywhere. So this is good value for money indeed. I wouldn't mind one. Alth3it should be brand new.

You might not have heard of any complaints but Hello Peter makes me question the reliability and quality of this product. People are complaining about Gearbox problems, brake system failure, battery and aircon unit replacements in the first 6months. And im talking about consumers that purchased brand new units...not pre-owned or demos. What makes it worse is that the after sales service is questionable and people made mention that the 5/7year warrantee is a scam because the manufacturer dont take any responsibility and also dont pay out any claims. So im sorry there is your catch u were looking for😬

This Haval ( like most brands actually ) will take a huge hit when you need to trade/resell. It is mostly to do with brand perception, Toyota always wins that game in SA. Brands like these also have the tendency to leave the country after a couple of years. Its risky, if you going to get one make sure you keep it for a long time ( and who knows if the car will hold up in long run )

My wife owns the 2019 HAVAL H2 City auto...second model in its class. Hamilton white. Is there a review on the 3 different engine settings....standard, economic & snow. I dnt seem to see that that settings help fuel wise or is it just me. I also don't like where the card holder is situated just behind the gear lever. If the gear stick is in park position u can't really work with ease behind the gear shifter because it is too close to the card holder. 3rdly the wind noise on the car is very bad. You can't drive with the windows down without having effect on your ears especially the back windows effecting the front occupants. And to top it all. This engine is very thirsty on fuel. No matter how I drive it it is to heavy on fuel. I would like to know what other HAVAL H2 2019 model owners thinks and your expert advice as well .

Would you say that the manual transmission will be better option than the automatic? Fuel consumption seems to be higher than other rivals, but then again, the initial cost of the vehicle is so much lower. Been driving a Hyundai Getz now for 17 years since new. Unfortunately recently a motorbike turn infront of me and now the car is in for repairs after 17 years of excelent sevice from this little 1300cc. Pity the Getz name was changed to I20. But yes, as mentioned car prices for Hyundai is not low and the looks is ugly these days.

I think the "value for money" mystery factor lies in two main places : aesthetics of design (interior & exterior) as well as integrity of engineering. I've actually driven thís car and yes the engine is quite punchy, but not every time you accelerate - almost as if you "catch out" the turbo ánd it is HEAVY on fuel. Then you also mentioned the lack of seamless integration between engine & drive train - thís is where money is saved. But yes, the majority of people want to get from point A to B and will in all probability not even notice thís. Same with the design aesthetics - when Hyundai & Kia roped in Schreiber, ex AUDI designer, their designs & quality (ánd prices) improved DRAMATICALLY! Thís is where the Chinese brands still have to catch up - hopefully their pricing will remain competitive however.

A cheap car with a semi expensive feeling interior doesn't mean its a good purchase. Id be interested in the brand if I could see a 10 year old Haval with more than 150 000km on the odo that's still driving and holding up. Then there's also the question of resale value and parts availability.. Ill rather stick to buying Korean, Japanese or German cars, even second hand before i get burned with a Chinese car. lets see how things look in another few years...

We used to say that about Kia and hyandai, you forget most cars are built by robots, I had a new Ford and it blew a radiator in a month and it was 7000 dollars dearer than my mg3 which has no problems , Chinese cars are catching up in Quality very fast, as far as resale I don't care my car has 7 Years warranty it's a disposable car lol

Biggest piece of shit I ever brought. 2019 model, H2 premium. No power, to the point where it is dangerous, and very thirsty. Just got rid of it, expensive mistake. I would never recommend anyone buy a Haval.
