I forgot to mention the 2020 Svartpilen 401 also offers switchable ABS for those who want to get a bit more serious about their scrambling. The Svartpilen runs tubeless tyres (Pirelli Scorpion STRs) however they do still run tubes in them, something I missed in my excitement of seeing tubeless tyres fitted!

I saw this at a dealership in the US for the first time last year and was amazed at the value. It offers a lot of premium features for an entry level bike and I actually really like the unique styling. If I wanted a 300-400cc bike again, this would definitely be my top choice.

I think it's just people not even knowing they exist honestly! And if your local dealer only had one, I bet some people would assume it's a one-off special and would be super expensive, not even realising it's a Husqvarna standard.

Your market has a great spec. They just launched it here in the Philippines for around AUS $8100 but we don’t get the adjustable suspension (except for rear preload), and we get cheap cast alloy wheels. The spoked wheels are an upgrade option.

Great review Kris! Awesome as always. I know the Kawasaki 400 makes a fraction more power and torque however it is slightly heavier, more expensive and doesn’t come close to having all the features you have mentioned. The adjustable suspension, larger diameter up side down forks and a quick shifter will appeal much more to an experienced rider. Plus you can get a set of bar end mirrors for around $20. For me however I’d be buying the VITPILEN purely for the ergonomics and proper road biased tyres to maximise its cornering ability. Also with the smaller capacity tank than the Kwaka you will need to get off the bike more frequently, which, let’s face it neither the white or black arrow versions are designed for touring... 👍😎

I was hoping to check out the Vitpilen 401 to see how it compared but it wasn't available on the day. There's definitely a lot of features on these that no one else is offering, apparently they've been selling like hotcakes with these new 2020 versions as well, which isn't surprising.
@marcusgeorge1825
@marcusgeorge1825 4 жыл бұрын
Moto Journo Kris Really? The original one had extremely poor sales even after the price was significantly reduced. Please correct me if I’m wrong as my understanding (apart from the tiny length increase) is the 2020 now has adjustable front forks and a Quickshifter, slightly different colours than the 2018 model. This is huge in terms of a bonus 2020 vs 2018. However a newbie won’t know how to make the one, two or three click adjustments to the forks to set it up correctly for the person riding it. I’m 6’3”+ with boots on, so the seat height isn’t a problem. However I always thought the 835 mm seat height was an actual deterrent to the newbies, especially the “vertically” challenged riders, where the R3, MT-03, Z400 and Ninga 400 all have a much lower seat height which should make them more appealing and easier to ride. Plus, all new riders (in my humble opinion) need to first grasp throttle, brake and clutch control. A Quickshifter in car terms would be the equivalent of gaining an automatic car license only. Setting up compression and rebound dampening is an art in itself. I’m now seriously considering buying one, as I know how to set up a bike and just use it for an additional weekend toy! Nothing puts a bigger smile on your dial than riding a bike to its full. This bike, on the right hands, will out corner and be quicker in the twisties than basically any big bike ( if you want to keep your license). Seriously these look awesome and to be able to go around someone on a litre+ Sportbike, for me that’s where it counts. 😊

@@marcusgeorge1825 Apparently the 2020 version have been going very well. The early versions certainly had issues getting buyers, with the original pricing being so much higher than almost anything else in the category, and then I'd say probably capturing people's attention once the price dropped, which kind of left them in limbo - not a new release, but suddenly really competitively priced. Also motorcycle sales are very strong at the moment, which would certainly help. I don't know that that means they're leading the sales charts the way the Ninja 400 has in the past of course, as this is a niche machine. It's all relative! One the one hand the adjustable suspension is probably often underutilised (on most bikes), but it's nice to have, and new riders can always google to figure out how to get it set up or adjust it properly, but the suspension has always been fairly premium. I think the big advantage is the overall package on paper is very impressive when people do their research to figure out what captures their imagination, and that does convert across to the ride - although that was true prior to the updates, I thought anyway. I know a lot of people think a quick shifter is like an auto, but honestly I don't think so. The biggest advantage of an auto is no clutch for starting and stopping, which isn't true of a quickshifter. The big downside is you no longer get to choose when you change gear, which is also not true of a quickshifter. It's like with ABS, if someone is the kind of rider to rely on it badly enough to effect their general braking ability, I doubt not having ABS would see them being a better rider.

Moto Journo Kris I agree with you 100%! Instead of using bike technology, I’ll use cars as an example. Mine, stock standard has all the driver enhancements. Out of the box it achieves 0-100 in 4.8 seconds and you don’t need to be A talented car driver to achieve that as the computer’s take control. Today, modern cars are quicker than a manual with an automatic box. Yes bikes are a bit different, even today, as you still need to use the clutch and synchronise for the fastest start (unless your on a scooter).

Are you sure those are tubeless tires? I own this bike, exact same one you are showing there...mine has tubes. I was told by the dealer, only the 701 is tubeless. The spoked wheels require tubes on the 401, but do not on the 701. I haven't taken the wheel off myself to check, but the valve stem looks like a tube, yours in the video are the same as mine (looks wise).

Just makes you think how much money they made with those things and still make after dropping off 4 grand. Still wouldn't buy one of these things. After servicing Husqvarna bikes I know for sure I stick to Japanese brands. The shop I work in is a Husqvarna/KTM and Suzuki dealer and what I see returns for warranty work on those Husqvarna/KTM bikes is mind boggling. Specific VIN ranges of 701s need new plastic tanks. 701 Vit and Svartpilens are are coming back left and right for tank swaps and electrical problems so bad, we have to send those bikes back to Husqvarna. And they don't say what's wrong so we can't figure out what we can do to fix those problems in the workshop. I don't know how many Husky engines I saw that were totally destroyed still under warranty with not a lot of mileage especially the Supermoto and 2-stroke Cross engines that came back in the time I worked there compared to the Suzukis none had come back for engine rebuild/warranty work. Leaking WP suspension parts, leaking engines, non functional clutches all in brand new bikes. These bikes are trouble. Can remember one customer came back four times with his 701 each time with a new problem and yes he was pissed... xD and we don't even sell a ton of these. I hope for all the customers that the biggest problems emerge under warranty and they can have at least a few trouble free years with their pretty expensive bikes. Buying a bike for 10 grand and then have to let a shop have to get work under warranty done would drop the confidence in this bike, at least for me. No Husky for me. But to be fair, they are fun to ride, that's a given.

@MotoJournoKris
@MotoJournoKris 3 жыл бұрын
Honestly I don't think there's a bike I've ridden which I'd say wasn't plenty capable of doing a highway ride for that kind of period. Being a nakedbike there's limited wind protection, but you should have no issues keeping up with traffic. As long as you're comfortable on the bike, I can't see anything that would stop you. It's not going to be as good as something like a mid-capacity tourer, but that's where those bikes excel.

Didn’t know that the 2020 now comes with tubeless wheels as the previous model years came without. That was one of my initial nitpicks and glad they got that sorted out. Do you feel the 2020 rode any differently to the 2018 you last reviewed following some of the revisions?

I actually need to double check that, as I'd forgotten they'd run the tubeless tyres (same as now) on the old model, but actually run them with tubes, which actually seems to be the case here again, double checking all my photos of the bike and looking at the valve stems. I think I got caught up in the excitement of reading tubeless on the tyres on that one which is my bad! I didn't feel like there was any significant change, but the quickshifter certainly adds to the fun factor when you're having a fang, however it's hard to pick up the more subtle differences without testing the new and old models back to back.

@MotoJournoKris
@MotoJournoKris 4 жыл бұрын
Yep that pricing update really puts them in the mix now, which is great to see! It's rare I'd be able to do a long term test unfortunately, unless I'm personally buying the bike for my own use, or am able to arrange something directly with the manufacturer, as in this case I'm lucky enough to be given a Moto Hub demo bike for the day, but that's time the bike can't be tested out by prospective customers, while a long term test turns a bike from a demo into a second hand bike, and is a pretty big investment from whoever lends me the bike. Not that I'd ever say no if the opportunity presented itself, as it's great to spend more time with the machine, and get an idea of all the quirks of ownership, plus hopefully be able to fit some accessories and kind of personalise the bike. I have been pretty tempted by pick one of these up, or a 390 ADV to be honest, but I've got to make some room in the garage by selling other bikes, and there's a few options that would be vying for attention if that all works out and frees up some space. The aim is actually to be able to do that probably with a different beginner bike each year, buying it, doing a long term test, accessories and such, then selling and trying something different out, but I'm not quite there yet.

@@waiwong7996 I definitely think it's a good option, the main thing to look at is the seat height, as ideally you want to be confident getting a foot down securely. As you get more experienced it's less of an issue, but as a new rider in the early stages an easy reach to the ground really helps. The upright seating position is also great. There are some easier new beginner bikes, but in a lot of cases that means less power and potential, and also generally lower specifications too.

i have even a tinier one- 200. same bike with a different engine. For city ride even the smaller baby is a hooligan bike and can get u in trouble. A 401 when pushed to full power will give more satisfaction than having a larger heavier bile running in mid rpm 90% of its life...one thing which I find shocking with this bike is how easy it is to split lanes, i almost go blidly splitting with it. Another thing to notice is that is is not just a face lift, then have really worked on the transmission. It is far better feel than clunky setup on the Duke. if u can live with the looks, it is a damn good bike for the price

What kind of riding and roads do you think you'll be doing? If it's lots of dirt and you want something really rugged the TW might be the better choice. If you're thinking more road and like the idea of something a lot sportier the 401 may fit your needs a lot better. The 401 has quite a bit of performance for a small capacity machine, but that also means more potential to grow into as a rider. You could also head down unsealed roads or do a bit of gravel, but if you want to properly explore the TW would be more ideal for single trails or really gnarly fire trails.

I'd agree Kris. I've been harping on about how good this bike is to ride over everything else in the new sub 10k bracket (and a lot of other bikes well north of that!) The KTM 390 platform is such an engaging bike to ride and offers that sweet spot of power/economy as a daily road bike. It's properly light, handles superbly and goes and stops with enough conviction to question why you need anything more for the road. Indeed everything on it is premium bar the display. A bi-directional quick shifter and adjustable suspension is just icing on the cake. To consider anything else is like thinking whether you should get a Mr Whippy vanilla ice cream cone over a tub of triple chocolate premium gelato (for the same price) Unfortunately they are now on back order just like so many other bikes and morons are trying to sell their old junk off to desperate buyers.

@MotoJournoKris 4 жыл бұрын
Definitely, and while I think the styling won't be for everyone, along with the 390 ADV I think we're seeing these machines raise expectations, which if they have enough of an impact could help push extra features through the whole segment. I do kind of think Husqvarna must be taking a bit of a hit selling these motorcycles at this kind of price, but even if they are, that's an investment in future customers and building their reputation for street machines, which is a win for riders, and should be a win for them in the long term.

@@MotoJournoKris It's one of those bikes you just need to properly test ride to appreciate. This years models look beautiful up close. Yes Kris, The bar has been raised by quite a margin. I can't see KTM/Husky failing due to them being built in a densely populated country with relatively low overheads. Indians predominantly ride small-mid capacity over any other type of vehicle. Their volume of sales is extraordinarily large and they have a huge market in developing countries where KTM is killing it. If it's a hit in India, which I have no doubt it will be for the new generation of riders, we can expect this trend to continue. Other manufactures will have no choice but to follow suit or sink

@@MotoJournoKris, awesome!! I love the look of the bike. I’m EXACTLY same measurements, at 75 Kilos. I just hope it’s not too weak. I just came off Yamaha Road Star Warrior at 1700cc. @@tjam4229 It may be a bit of a transition going from something with crazy low down torque, to something more revvy like this, but honestly you can have so much fun on the 401. You might get left behind in the straights by big machines, but the fun factor in the tighter stuff is unbelievable, and they really are a lot of bike for the money.

It’s my first road legal bike, took it for a run today with you guys in mind, again dash is fine, any bigger you would want colour and maybe a steering wheel. And it took me a little while for my body to adjust to the riding position and I thought of risers, but I wouldn’t now. In the process of slowly waking it up with breathing and maybe a chip. But only when I’m comfortable. Cause it has plenty
