Fresh to the boulevard for the New Year is Indian Motorcycle’s Challenger bagger. Positioned as a performance-oriented bagger-style cruiser, this Challenger ($27,499 as tested in the Dark Horse edition) picks up where the now-defunct Victory brand left off, giving motorcyclists a more macho alternative in the American-made V-twin segment.
--
The Challenger’s heart is a new 60-degree PowerPulse V-twin with 108ci (1,769cc) of oversquare muscle. The liquid-cooled engine was developed in-house, by Indian, and backs up its meaty bark with 114 pound-feet of Metzeler tire-smearing torque at just over 3,000 revs.
ABS-enabled triple disc hydraulic brakes keep speed in check, however the calibration of the rear brake’s ABS could be enhanced, as the back brake cycles excessively when applied with moderate pressure.
Going hard on the throttle unleashes 103-hp (as measured on the dyno) of acceleration, which makes for a more thrilling experience as compared to other traditional heavyweight cruisers. As opposed to a traditional cable throttle connection, the Challenger uses a ride-by-wire throttle setup, just like the FTR 1200 S street tracker. Conversely, the clutch employs a cable-actuated configuration which neither feels as smooth, nor as responsive as a modern hydraulic setup. Another gripe: There isn’t a barrel-style adjuster atop the clutch perch making routine cable tension adjustment a pain.
Three selectable combined engine power and throttle maps are offered (Rain, Standard, and Sport). While we appreciate the adjustability, the throttle has a sweet spot. Here response is peppy, and well-metered, especially in the Sport setting. However, off idle there is a degree of throttle play before the engine responds. Not a big deal, but something that could be improved. The tactile functionality of the switch gear should be better too.
Rev it out or short-shift through each of the six gears and the Challenger happily complies, delivering a smooth yet punchy experience behind its oversize fixed fairing. A standard electric-adjustable windscreen provides even greater protection from the elements.
Make no mistake about it, this twin loves to spin, and rev it does, belting out an authoritative exhaust note that fills the cockpit. Vibration is muted at low rpm, but creeps strongly through the controls at higher revs. The buzz is powerful enough to open the latched front right storage compartment, where the USB input is located. Important note: Don’t leave the wireless ignition key fob in that pocket.
With its 6-gallon fuel tank topped off, the 839-pound Challenger feels sizable especially at low speeds. A reasonably low center of gravity, a 26.5-inch seat height, and light steering feel keep it from feeling clumsy, yet it isn’t as composed at parking-lot speeds as other bikes this size.
Conversely, at speed, the Indian’s cast aluminum frame delivers a taut ride. Ample ground clearance during spirited riding maneuvers is another big plus, as is grip from the Metzeler Cruisetec tires. An inverted fork and Fox-sourced shock provide upwards of 4.5 inches of suspension travel with damping that is neither too wollowy nor firm. Indian certainly did its homework, striking the right balance between sport-oriented handling and everyday comfort.
Speaking of comfort, the saddle is one of the best we’ve sampled. It cups the rider’s behind near perfectly holding them in place during spirited riding. Yet, it remains plush and supportive during 100-plus mile tours. A wide handlebar and floorboards make it easy to stretch out on, however it would be nice if Indian included a touring-friendly heel shifter. Standard and ultra-precise cruise control is another welcome feature as are the lockable hard cases which swallow 18 gallons of gear.
In addition to blacked-out styling pieces replacing chrome hardware, Dark Horse versions of the Challenger add traction control. Like most liter-class and above sized sportbikes, the system includes a smartphone chip-sized IMU. This gives the bike positional awareness, and can potentially mitigate loss of control by reducing engine power and brake pressure during certain riding conditions. GPS navigation inside the 7-inch touchscreen-compatible Ride Command display is also included. Curiously, heated grips are only available as an option.

I'm pretty sure that reverse throttle action is the cruise "cancel" function. At least it is on the air cooled Indians. I like it. Cleaner than tapping brakes or having yet another button. Well, it took you over ten minutes to say anything not orgasmically fabulous about the bike, but then you hit almost every thing bad that I noticed during my test ride from poor throttle response to thin plastic wobbly saddle bags. You don't need to pay ~$2000 more for the Harley though. They're about the same price. I think the fairing looks grossly HUGE and that helped me feel more comfortable with my decision to keep my bike from the OTHER motor company. Just a quick, small suggestion to Adam. I doubt he will even see it, but here it goes anyway: Right in the beginning, when you talk about the jacket, the gloves and the pants, would it be possible for you to point the camera at them for 2 seconds? Because when you say "if you want to know more about them, click the link in the description", I never click because I didn't get curious enough just by hearing the name of a product. But seeing such product makes all the difference. Cheers, buddy. Keep up the great work. 👍

At this price point to not have a trunk or even heated grips makes no sense. I get it, a bagger with a lot of power so what. You can purchase a Honda Goldwing with more power, more features and will out handle this bagger for far less money. -Got the opportunity to ride the Challenger several times at the Nov. 2019 Long Beach bike show. It was a bit warmer, in the upper 60's - lower 70's as I recall and I was surprised at the heat being thrown off from the engine on my right leg. I have ridden my share of air cooled big twins so I was expecting something more. My MT-10 gets warm too in the slow stuff, my Husky 701 I don't really notice anything. High compression ratios in 4 cylinder engines or this performance big twin are going to cost you some in comfort. Also, it's worth noting that this bike was a handful for me in the parking lot at slow speed in turns. I would suggest that this MC is for peeps with some past experience with heavyweight motorcycles. Although the faring mount keeps the steering light, it takes a toll with other miscellaneous factors which gave me the experience of a top heavy ride. Yes, once moving things get way more pleasant. The cornering demonstrated in this video was impressive. In the bikes I've tested like this, the BMW K1600 B excelled and really wound out through an impressive rev range. The torque was very good too but, I did miss that big twin, deep sound. Lastly, I find this MC's looks challenging. I did in my KTM 1290 too and still bought it for the performance and engineering, despite that. Today, the KTM looks better to me now than my initial feelings about it. But, from what little artistic instincts I possess, I'd wager that MC historians looking back some day are not going to be having much good to say about the appearance of the fairing.

I hate to say, but this fella does not seem qualified to critique this bike. An example is the "reverse" twist of the throttle, its there on purpose. One can disengage the cruise with a simple throw of the throttle. Further more.. He is attempting to use it more as a sport bike... not even close to a reasonable comparison beyond the front end. Sport bikes don't weigh 850lbs. So I will go to my local Indian dealer and test ride one myself along with a Goldwing and a Roadglide and figure this out for myself.

On your complaint about the throttle rotating forward, i do believe it's designed that way to turn off the Cruze Control. I just rode that bike. It was the best bagger i have ever riden,i would get the base model also hopefully Indian will listen like ducati did and improve the fit and finish.

I just traded my Vintage in on a Ruby Red Challenger, inappropriately named because Dodge has a Challenger. The Challenger Limited has the Lean control technology, ABS, traction control, highway bars, Ride Command screen. I added heated grips and highly recommend them. The clutch pull on mine is very light. My chin-mounted camera has a better view over the dash, IDK why. The throttle twists forward as one of several ways to turn off the cruise control; twist forward, the switch, clutch and brake also deactivate the cruise. This bike rides far better than any other motorcycle I've owned. It has nimble handling and a lighter feel than the Chief Vintage that I traded in, /cry I miss it, but I also love my new choice. I have just over 1000 miles on mine and I"m getting 40 mpg as my commute is 45 minutes long down side roads for 12% of my ride and interstate 88%. The audio is easy to control as is the cruise control. What is not easy is switching ride modes. You have to have a touch screen glove tip to change the settings or a bare finger. It only weighs 10 lbs less than my Vintage but has a much lighter feel and a more comfortable seat. Power out the wazoo, very smooth shifting experience. The clutch is easy to pull and there's no big CLUNK when I shift into 1st gear. I'm very happy with my purchase. The Challenger offers much more wind protection than my Vintage and this is allowing me to ride down to 20 degrees F so far with no troubles (Leather jacket with liner, chaps with liners, heated grips, polyester balaclava, full helmet (Icon Alliance), regular winter gloves. Thick palmed gloves will do you no good as the heat from the grips will not transfer to your hands as well. II rode it in the rain, rain mode, which feathers the throttle and works very well. I'm 6'1" 268 lbs and this bike is a perfect fit. Taller people may need an extended reach seat and a handlebar adjustment. Nice review. I hope this helps you. Maybe your clutch just needed adjustment. The dark horse does not come with highway bars, btw. It's an add on.

That’s the one I want. I test drove the standard one. Once I found out that the gps wasn’t in the standard, as well as that Matt Black, I think I’ll go head and get the Dark Horse. But I took that baby up to 100mph 😂, I had to. I’m planning to get one next Summer some time. And 20:36 we can’t do that here in Florida. That’s a nice ticket here I found out. I noticed after moving here, but I’m from Cali🤟🏽. Still getting used to the rules here.

@JK-tu1xx
@JK-tu1xx 4 жыл бұрын
@@atvtinker01 Like that really needed to be said..? You must either be a new rider or unfamiliar with the fact that people live in places where they get snow and ice for 4-5 months of the year and the roads always have new potholes that you don't see until you're right infront of them so on a bike like this you'd likely be paying or a new front end every 2-3 months. You don't just look 1/4 mile ahead of you btw, you should constantly be adjusting where you're looking based on road conditions and traffic around you. If you can spot a pothole 1/4 mile ahead of you at 75+ mph you must have the vision of a hawk.
