Nice to see the Dynamic Duo back. A very fair review. I've had the Versys 650GT for a year and done 8000 miles, including a 2500 mile tour round Europe. My previous bike was a Honda VFR1200X Crosstourer, a great bike but, at 275kg, heavy. The Versys does everything I want from a bike and I don't regret changing from the Honda.

It's the corolla of bikes. I'm interest in this bike yet I kinda want something with more low end torque. I already have a corolla so I want my bike to be a bit violent. Thinking about getting a naked bike and slap on a fairing for wind. They corner well, usually have some pep, in market so competitive pricing. Haven't decided yet. Currently i have DRZ400sm that I refuse to take on the highway. It's a sprocket lowered now highway feels like abuse.

I've owned over 17 bikes and have ridden many miles in my riding career. I love my 2008 Versys and have put over 40,000 miles on it ripping twisties here in western North Carolina. I also throw on saddlebags and take a few long range trips each year. Fantastic all around bike. The fact that Ari bought one and has been a long term ambassador for the Versys says it all.

Your Versys 650 review a few years back sold me so I got one 3 years ago now and never regretted it. I'm 6'3 275lbs and I've ridden 10 hours in a day no problem. I threw on a hefty skid plate, crash bars, and some pivot pegs and most importantly some Avon 90/10 tires and the thing tackles northern CA gravel, logging and 4x4 roads no problem. ABS does fine on pretty steep hills. The stock tires were super sketchy for some reason on anything soft. It truly is versatile or a Jack of all trades kind of bike with just about $1000 in Mods. Mud, deep sand, or gravel not so much but I still slip and slide through it when I have to. I've only had a couple stop drops and can pick it back up solo without too much struggle at all. Thanks Zach and so glad you are back! 😉👍

It was a big influence on my looking at the bike a few years back as well. Having had a Tiger 1050 (similar power to the Tracer) I find the Versys 650 is just fine with benefits of economy in mpg, tire life, no need for TC and 87 octane fuel. This bike is fun and does everything you need well. It's not a great dirt road bike but it'll get you where you need for camping and checking out places. It took me everywhere I wanted through Alaska.

Glad to see you back, bro! Yes, good choice of a bike as a benchmark. You and Ari were good hires by RZ, I think. 14:20 - No, it's Tar Snake Pass. 16:39 - The Ninja 650 would CLEARLY win for filtering! 26:50 - Re. Versys 650 vs. 1000, I'm a 2019 1000 SE LT+ owner. I would add that the 1000 is one of the best two-up bikes in all of road bike-dom. Really big comfortable passenger seat and enough power to still be fast, while hauling the old lady around. 30:10 - GREAT answer. 31:45 - Leaderboard is right out of the old Top Gear. Nice nod. One additional comment. I have the same bags on my 1000. The white top is painted over black plastic, and it is not the "self healing paint" it gets chipped up pretty quickly from rocks and stuff, so get your white-out ready. Nicely-done as usual, Zack.

Finally got through the break in and first impressions says this bike isn’t perfect in any area, but is decent to good in touring, adventure, street, and sport. Great to have Zack back! I was shopping for a new bike in 2016 and had a difficult time choosing between getting a Versys 650 and FJ-09 (1st gen Tracer 900). Test riding both sold me on the FJ. The engine has so much more charm and it's a much more exciting bike. Beyond that, I'm only 5'9" and the FJ is not only a little bit shorter than the Versys, but also a lot thinner in the middle. I tip toe both bikes, but could at least get one foot solidly planted on the FJ without leaning over too much. I think if you're a moto journalist with the opportunity to ride all kinds of crazy bikes throughout the year, the tameness of the Versys might not carry the same penalty as it does for the average rider. For a person limited to owning and riding 1 bike for a few years, the fun factor of the Tracer 900 should not be undervalued, and it's still a plenty comfortable tourer (well, at least with a decent aftermarket seat on the FJ's -- Tracer seat is better).

Loved the review. I'm now riding my second Versys 650 after buying an 09 with 50K Miles and selling it with over 80K I bought a 2017 Versys 650 with ABS 2 years ago...I can't recommend this bike enough. I really wanted all the goodness that came with the upgrades- gear indication, smoothness at speed, better looks (my opinion). I looked at many bikes before coming back to the Versys, but nothing could compare. I really wanted to like the Tracer or back then the fj09, but I felt there were issues I couldn't get past. This bike (Versys) is fun to ride at any speed and always feels stable and sure-footed. It's predictable and confident. Not to knock the Tracer, but I believe it has a speed limiter and I concluded after reading a bit that it was possible that Yamaha did that to prevent stability issues at high speeds without fixing the real problem with suspension or rake, etc.. There were also questions about the reliability-some plastic internals with the timing chain. I could be wrong so do the research please, I'm just going from memory. So many things about that product from drive by wire etc taking some years to work out. So anyway back to the Versys... it's simple, it's dependable( I mean Toyota like reliability-I rode it hard and fast all the way to 80K miles and sold it to a kid in Atlanta who is still riding it two years later. Changed the oil...I think the valves were done at 25K and that's it), it's fun and it does a ton of stuff way better than any other bike in its price range. I ride it every day. I also would go with the CB500x. I'm a Vstrom fan as well. I've thought about the new 1050xt for more comfortable longer rides(cruise, more power, hauling more gear) however the Versys 650 will get you there in comfort any day. It just doesn't have as many legs as I'd like as compared to the 1050xt or other larger bikes - but that's just it - it's kind of in a class of its own. The short wheelbase and peppy engine give you a lot of flickability that I just don't think you'll get with the Versys 1000. This bike seems more balanced for fun rides. Enough power to be fun, but not too much or little...just about right. It's still fast enough all the way up to triple digits and will put a grin on your face every time you ride. It excels as a road bike and will perform decently if you decide to hit some dirt every once in a while. Here in south Florida, I do beach rides and it's great. If you read this HMU if you have any questions and I'll be glad to share more information. Also if you live in the Tampa area I'd love to meet up and ride sometime. Thanks, Zack and Revzilla for all the great reviews!

Excited to see both you and Ari back at work again. I am also excited to see this Versys as your first entry in this series. I own the 2015 model and it is one of the best motorcycles I've ever owned, just balanced in every way. To improve its touring swag, I have added a Sargent seat, SW Motech center stand, Scosche handlebar mount for mobile devices, and an accessory outlet (buy the one for the Vulcan 650 to save about $60). The Versys LT is just one of the best motorcycle bargains out there.

I have a 2011 Versys 650 (purchased new in 2012). I've put 20K miles on it, primarily day touring in the Four Corners Region of the U.S. At that time the model didn't have the full range of OEM features on the bike you tested. The good news is the the Versys 650 has a very large range of available aftermarket accessories, which I added to bring the equipment complement up to similar to the new model. For example, the stock seat height is too much for me at 5'9". An available rear lowering link and adjusting the front forks solved that problem. I also have full Givi luggage and windshield, Barkbusters hand guards, mirror extenders, handlebar riser, engine/exhaust pipe guard (skid plate), custom touring seat, etc. I have people favorably comment on how quiet the exhaust is (noise and vibration are primary contributors to fatigue). Unfortunately, as I become older, the lack of a cruise control to help relieve right hand fatigue and the need to adjust the chain every 500 miles had made an all day ride less comfortable and pleasant. For that reason I replaced it last year with a 2019 Kawasaki Concours 14. The only thing the Concours didn't have that I wanted was cruise control and that was solved by the addition of a McCruise Electronic Cruise Control System. I expect that will be the last bike I own.

I would recommend this bike to anyone looking for a sport touring bike.

@@Snoupity Depends on your definition. It lowers redline by 500 rpm, it turns the cooling fan on at a lower temp, more low end grunt and smoother on and off the throttle. In my opinion the downside is that I didn't have a bike for a week or so while getting it shipped and flashed.

I'm so happy to see you review the Versys 650. I've been riding a Ninja 650R for almost 15 years (commuting in major cities, blasting up Mt Rainier and Tail of the Dragon, cruising interstates to Indy, touring National Parks), and my wife picked up a Z650 recently. We LOVE this platform and HAVE taken them cross-country, adding nothing more than stock grab handles on mine and Shad saddlebag supports on hers. She started riding on an older VSTROM 650 and HATED it to the point she thought she wanted a low displacement cruiser like a Rebel 500 (yawn). The VSTROM didn't agree with me either; too wide in the seat and top-heavy, plus the non-adjustable levers SUCKED. She was nearly ready to give up because of the VSTROM, but the Kawasaki was amazing for her confidence level and she's become a very proficient rider. With so much seat time on the 650, I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone, but the Tracer 900 is definitely a step up in power and comfort for a sporty tourer in my view.

Awesome review of a fun bike loved the format and looking forward to more reviews. I came to the Versys 650 LT from an Africa Twin (also an awesome bike) - for my riding (90% street/10% offroad-though including some ATV trails and water crossings) the V performs nearly as well as the AT. The exhaust doesn't sound as nice, and I miss that larger front tire/suspension offroad, but the V has been cheaper and easier to maintain, has longer range (My AT was just prior to the Adventure sport model) , and is an absolute riot in the twisties. Every time I think about getting rid of it to get something else, I wind up swinging my leg over, going for a quick ride, and the stupid grin completely erases the thought of letting it go. Mine's got over 40K on it now, and even with the factory luggage and a luggage crash bar I had no problems lane splitting on a vacation out to California last year (from the rust belt). Throw TKC80's or other more agressive tire and a skid plate and the versys is surprisingly capable offroad. Parts/maint are pretty cheap, and it's reasonably friendly to work on. I've also spent some seat time on a Vstrom 650 and CB500X - The strom was a little nicer offpavement, but on the street I wanted my versys back. The CB500X is nice, but I did NOT like how far rear the footpegs were positioned and it just felt a bit too cramped for a taller (6'+) rider.

@@karlfedoroff146 I should clarify. The rear end. Not the front. It’s like the back end wabbles - just enough for me to be like “time to slow down” and the tires were new, etc.
@karlfedoroff146
@karlfedoroff146 2 жыл бұрын
@@americandude3825 When was the last time the rear tire was changed ? There's a pair of spacers (one on each side) that fit in between the hub and swingarm, on the brake side of the rear the caliper bracket also kind of dovetails in addition to the spacer. I'd double check that area first to make sure as one of the spacers could be missing. Can you get your bike up on a centerstand/jack (even a car jack with a block of wood under will work if you're careful) if you can lift the bike enough to get the rear off the ground try wiggling the rear tire from side to side- there really shouldn't be any lateral/side to side play. You can also check to make sure it's torqued to spec though the exact spec escapes me at the moment - there's a couple you tube vids on how to remove the rear wheel of these bikes that break it all down.
