We all know what a hot hatch is, don't we? Well what about a warm hatch? The new Kia Ceed GT is a warm hatch. It has more power, better brakes, tweaked suspension and stickier tyres compared to a normal Kia Ceed, but less power and less performance than something like a Golf GTI. So is it any good? Does a warm hatch make sense?

Great review. It's fascinating to think where Kia and Hyundai have come from in the last few years. From cheap and cheerful to (very nearly) mainstream products.

Great video, been a while, funny bits too, got a Hyundai i30N performance and you're it's a very good car. This looks good too but like you said disappointing they didn't try to go go for a hot hatch. Maybe because they have the i30N they may have felt they don't need to bother ? Not sure

Good review and always good to see something other than the German offerings. Was price and fuel economy mentioned? If so I apologise but even so I enjoy these reviews but struggle to believe you had a driving licence two years ago 😬

I think any car with a bhp/ton figure of around 150 is a 'Hot Hatch' (with the correct styling and suspension). cars with 200+ bhp/ton are a new category of 'Ultra Hot Hatches'. For example and EP shape Civic Type R is a Hot Hatch but the current model Type R is a Ultra Hot Hatch. I don't think 'Warm Hatches' exist.

it's so weird. i did buy one and it arrives next month and i got a virtual cockpit also a ceed gt from 2020

what is the average fuel consumption in everyday drive and when you trash it ?

Normal driving mid 30s. Breaking the law on the motorway mid 20s. My current average over 7k miles is 36mpg. My commute is a mixture of roads and then in city and lots of traffic.

I know what a hot hatch is, but I don't think NewMotoring does. 'Warm hatch' is not a thing. That's a term typically used by journalists, and in most cases is used to describe a hot hatch with less power under the bonnet than models from other manufacturers. Car manufacturers never describe their halo / sports hatchback models in a range as "our latest warm hatch'. They DO describe their hottest version of a particular hatchback - regardless of engine power / performance - as a 'hot hatch'. Back in the day, a hot hatch, was a hot hatch - regardless of what was under the bonnet. An MG Metro Turbo, with what - 94 BHP, was no less a hot hatch than a Sierra Cosworth with 220 odd BHP. Admittedly, one is faster than the other. But they were both deemed hot hatches - the 'hottest' version of a particular model in the range. Take the Escort Cosworth from the 90's. No one would ever describe that car as anything less than a hot hatch. Well, check out the Fifth Gear videos of Jason Plato taking an Escort Cosworth around Anglesey, and in a later video - the latest Suzuki Swift Sport. A few journalists described the Swift Sport as a warm hatch. But, the Swift Sport was something like half a second quicker than the Escort Cosworth around the same track, in similar conditions. So does that now make the Escort Cosworth a 'warm hatch'? No it doesn't. It's still a hot hatch, just like the Swift Sport and the Kia Ceed GT is today. Despite those newer cars having less performance than the fastest hot hatches available today - they are still no less a hot hatch. The same silliness is used when journalists describe faster hatchbacks as 'hyper hatches'. It's ridiculous, again - they are describing engine power / performance as reason to label a typical performance oriented hatch. I think journalists should stick with the traditional thinking on what makes a hot hatch. In most cases, that is a mass market hatchback that has been upgraded with a bigger or more powerful engine, sports suspension, alloy wheels, exterior and interior sporting flourishes. Anyway, great review.

Gatekeeping what a hatchback can be, that’s a new level of stupid. Of course a warm hatch exists if people make the classification. It’s all an abstract idea anyway!

@@ResevoirGod Ok, that's your opinion, and I'm happy for you. What annoys me is that EVERY journalist regurgitates the same nonsense 'journo speak'. 'Scratchy plastics' is another stupid one used by nearly ALL KZbin so-called journalists. Well, no car manufacturer ever put in their glossy car brochures - "our new car, with our finest scratchy plastic dashboard". Scratching plastic is a physical action that a person does with their finger nails. A car never comes supplied with 'scratchy plastics'. Why not say it as it is? It's either a hard plastic dash, or a soft plastic dash... and that is the thing. Both types are PLASTIC. It's just that one is a harder compound than the other. As mentioned in my original post, some journalists label the Swift Sport as a 'warm hatch'. But the truth of it is that many a Rent4Ring Swift Sport has managed to shame cars with more than 5 times the power on the Nurburgring. This is because engine power output is only one factor. The car has to be judged as a whole. Most German performance cars are fast in a straight-line, but stick them on a tight and twisty back road - and you'd soon find out that for all of their performance - they are no quicker than a well driven, lightweight hot hatch with a 3rd of the power under the bonnet. That's the truth of it. Anyone who doesn't believe this is likely not a good driver in the first place. Just my opinion.
