Trouble with that is when that is fitted (as its not a road legal system) and they upload the KTM Akra map the bike wont start if indicators are connected. Like most things there is a work around by fitting a 10 sec relay loom but we shouldn't have to do that. Having said that the Full Akra system is a complete game changer! Picked mine up earlier this year as an ex demo for a great price. So, so happy with it & compares very favourably to a previous Ducati Monster 1200R. It had all the packs included & dealers appear to be including these now & the quick shifter is great. Disagree about the riding position as I find it very comfortable & I don't get on well with sports bikes at the age of 53. Its way more comfortable than my previous Kawasaki H2 SX SE+, which was putting me off biking due to its lack of comfort. Fitted with a SC Project slip on, it sounds & feels better than the very pricey Akrapovic for much less money. One real gripe is the turn by turn nav doesn't work as KTM changed the app for it, which now doesn't support the pre 22 versions. Your mention of the switchgear being good , I agree except for the indicator switch as cancelling them is not very positive at all, but otherwise a great bike I intend to keep for years.

Not sure if you’re aware but there are two positions for the handlebars. You have to undo the handle bar itself and move the mounts back. There are two sets of holes machined in the top yolk. KTM recommend the forward ones for racing, and which I believe is the standard factory position or you can bring them back slightly which gives you a slightly more upright riding position. I myself found the factory position too far forward. And contemplated bar risers until I stumbled upon the other handle bar position.

I was very much a victim of the marketing department when I bought my second gen in '18. Just had to have it, so I did. I agree on the sentiment of the electronic packages. Despite that, I bought the quickshifter and Akra mapping. The track pack is still on the list. No I don't like spending several hundred for a coded paywall, but holy hell, that quickshifter is GOOD. There's a lot of complicated tech involved in smooth downshifts. Nonetheless, I think KTM is doing themselves a disservice selling these things separately. If they were standard, they'd have a MASSIVELY strong sales argument over the competition. The grand or so that these packages cost combined probably aren't that big a deal on top of the MSRP when you look at the prices of the Tuono / SFV4S / MT10, but they DO annoy everyone when purchased separately. That same grand could be used on a stiffer steering damper or better fork internals. Areas that aren't quite as good as that absolutely bonkers addictive engine.
@lovelessissimo3 жыл бұрын
I understand that manufacturers are in the business of making money, but it is quite telling that they paywall an electronic code. They had to go out of their way to equip the bike with a quick shifter, then make the conscious decision to simply make it inaccessible.

@Trevor_Austin3 жыл бұрын
@@eubikedude I disagree. All of these features have been installed but disabled. Their cost of manufacture has already been taken into account. No extra components will bolted on, no additional parts added, no work required. An example of this greedy chiselling was IBM. In the 1980’s they were the biggest computer manufacturer in the world. They’d install a computer system and a year or so down the line “rent” you an upgrade. Depending on how much you paid you could quadruple the capacity of your hard-drives and cut access times down by 75%. This work consisted of removing inhibiting jumpers on control panels and an a upgrade of the O/S (which was merely inserting a few characters) to enable the “improvements” to take place. IBM are no longer the biggest computer company in the world. Their customers found better (more ethical/less unethical?) suppliers.

A big Thumbs Up on the correct pronunciation of the Ah-Krap-Oh-Vitch pipe this time Mr Flyer. Whilst I like that KTM focus on the high performance aspect of their bikes (something that personally appeals), the things that put me off buying one (either new or secondhand) are the numerous and well documented reliability problems they get with gearbox issues and porous crankcases, even at very low mileages. Those are most definitely not easy or cheap fixes, so I feel KTM need to get their act together on that score before bringing out the next new whiz bang model with a big price tag.

The Track Pack I understand more, not everyone wants it although it is a fantastic 'mode' and not just for track, I hope you tried it. Price wise, you can get a brand new one OTR for about 14.5k including the full tech pack (QS, track etc). Personally I highly recommend the SDR, I'm on my third, great bike.

Paint is very thin on this bike, its damed by electrical problems. you have to pay for everything, Quickshifter, techpack track pack etc.

I've fancied a 790 Duke as a second bike for a while but a friend had an SMCR that went back to dealer after proving so unreliable. Same friend also got rid of his Multistrada for low speed fuelling issues which is totally acceptable with modern engine management systems (as KTM has proved). I think the exhaust, being an OE option probably still has to meet certain noise regs (at least in the eyes of KTM, if not the customers). Also agree about the charging for options that already exist on the bike - they should just add a nominal amount to cover it and have it as standard. If I could afford a 1290, I'd have one though (as a second or third or fourth bike :D )

I went from GSXR Suzuki to a Kawasaki Z1000 being 48 as i wanted more comfort and a more upright riding position with that fun factor and for my next bike I was seriously looking at a new Superduke R but now you have deffo put me off one as I do a lot of miles when i am out riding and don't want that sports bike riding position anymore

It's nowhere near as extreme as a sports bike - just a reach if you're short of arm (like me) - have a sit on one yourself......or wait for my upcoming StreetFighter videos ;0)

I think the Akra exhaust sounds great! Sound is as subjective as looks I guess 🙂

Personally I think Akra are overrated, sound too similar to oem . AR +SC sound Awesome !

The 690 SMCR comes stock with the quick-shifter…. Not sure why the SuperDuke can’t do the same? By the time you buy all the extras, you will have $20,000 in the thing! It’s excellent, but that’s too much money for me… I’ll have to live vicariously through you guys and ride my little SMCR!

Great review as always, one piece of info id like to see on a review is how far the bike will go on a full tank of fuel, I appreciate this would only be possible on your long term reviews. I have an MT10 which I love but if I had known just how often i’d be stopping for fuel I may of looked at other bikes. I like the idea of a Super Duke but would go for the GT just because of the larger fuel tank. Love the channel, keep up the great work.

Price (too much), looks (horrible), colour scheme (gaudy & cheap looking), comfort (crippled after an hour's ride), software upgrades (pay more for what's there already)?? No thank you KTM! Great info Andy. That's another one off the list.

Ooops! Late to the party... Well, well, well Mr Flyer, you’ve set the cat amongst the pigeons in my world. Dilemma I’d say, noting your observations it is definitely time to take a test ride post C-19 lockdowns. TBF... not TMF! You have presented a well balanced and fair appraisal, and if I were a KTM suit, I’d be OK with the review....just need to get bum on seat to compare notes etc. Having both a BMW and KTM, I too and lets say, brand aware... loyalty? Yes in some way... but when it comes down to the choice of a bike, its as critical as your choice in comfy shoes.

I agree with most things but you can't compare the SuperDuke to an MT10 which doesn't even make 160hp or a S1000R which makes 165. The SuperDuke makes almost 180 and has way more torque. The SuperDuke also comes with better brakes, way better suspension than the MT10 and just in general has more features than the Yamaha and even the BMW in some cases. The real competitor I'd say is the Tuono V4. You can compare prices sure but in reality you need to go specs for specs. I'm not saying those other bikes with less power are bad but the SuperDuke is more expensive for a reason.

Thank you for a great review especially about the Akra slip on. I'm going to delete it from my order - what do you recommend?
@Dan-563 жыл бұрын
I think you can thank the Euro 5 regulations for the sound, or lack there of, from the Akra muffler. After running through no less than two catalytic converters and a pre muffler, there’s not much sound left even if you made it a straight through muffler....which it may in fact be 🤨.
@martiniv89243 жыл бұрын
Akrapovic exhaust, unfortunately due to the law, you will have to butcher the decibel killer out, welded in on the last one I bought, not like the 6mm bolt/circlip to remove on older exhausts.... it does remove a lot of weight though , from the Bike and your Wallet 🤣 She looks Gorgeous 👌🏻😎
@alexmorgan34353 жыл бұрын
I think you covered all bases. How much extra do KTM ask for the QS and Sports pack? As you say a bit cheeky on a bike already costing £15.5k. For me the cheaper BMW S1000R, MT-10SP, Tuono 1100 and even the Speed Triple RS are more practical or maybe even the previous gen SDR. I don't remember you being so critical of the riding position of the earlier model SDR. The warm lazy days of summer seem a distant memory. Thanks as always.

Hi Andy, thanks for reviewing the SDR. Having owned one for about 7 months it was interesting to listen to your views. As for that travesty of an exhaust, I agree with you on the underwhelming sound, but disagree on the looks. It’s awful! Just as ugly as the stock one in my opinion. With regard to the quickshifter, most decent dealers would hopefully chuck that in for free at point of sale. Mine did anyway. Totally agree about the reservoir covers. Most owners will swap those pretty quick for the anodised power parts. Anyway, totally love mine, so thanks again!

@Pete Pester I guess the main thing about getting Akro is that the warranty still stands, while if you use any other type of after-market exhaust, you may end up with a void warranty.

@Viktor Sligo What you said and showing up with yet another bike might result in my wife sending me to sleep in the backyard without a tent. (it is winter here) :) Granted my current stable is not as numerous as TMF's, but saying "honey bunny, the love of my life, TMF has a bunch of bikes. Why can't I have more? His wife lets him!" usually invokes the answer of "are you a lemming? if TMF jumps off a cliff, are you going to jump right after him?" to which I would answer "depends on which bike I am ridding". It kind of goes downhill from there. :)
