First impressions of the 2020 KTM 300 XC TPI are in. At first, the bikes power was very mild and timid. I then decided to back the power valve screw out slowly and see what happens. After about 1 turn out, this dirt bike came back to life similar to the others that I’ve had in the past. I’m very happy with it now. No, I’m not happy with the loss of the kickstart, or the smaller fuel tank, but the bike feels superb overall. It’s very smooth across the RPM range. Brakes, clutch, suspension, and chassis all feel really good.

It blows me away that people want to stick with carbs over tpi. I grew up on two strokes , constantly fiddling with jetting. Now we just want to get on and go. Love my 350 and 500 Ktms. But I will be purchasing the new 300 XC TPI bike this fall. It will be the 1st 2 stroke I've only in years all because of the fuel injection. Thanks KTM, I'm looking forward to it

@@mikedeyoung7219 cat tirds are no joke lol. I don't know, man. The beauty of a 2-stroke to me is simplicity. There are 4 or 5 different sensors on the TPI bikes. I know those are going to start going out soon, and the big computers are going to start dropping like flies soon, as well. I wanted to see direct inject bikes, but that totally went away for some reason.

@@mikedeyoung7219 Yes, when they work they are flawless. When they don't, they're at the dealer. I have two direct reports from a neighbour & coworker of the headaches they are having with there TPI's. Extra electronics= extra weight & complexity. There is probaby a reason beta copied KTM'S counter balanced motor, but not the TPI. It's great that the TPI's are bringing some riders back to the two stroke fold. I just hope very few get jaded by the technology when it has running issues.

Going down a tooth in the rear actually gears it higher man, raising the number of teeth requires more turns of the front sprocket to complete a turn of the rear sprocket so lowering it makes the gearing higher because it takes less turns of the front to complete a turn of the rear, making it turn faster with the same number of revolutions!

Kyle, could you sometime please try toggling between maps on one of your bikes and let us know your observation? I realize this more difficult to do on the orange bikes, but maybe when you do some maintenance or a tank swap... I have a hunch about the order in which the two maps are loaded to the ECU makes a difference which one you get in so-called "hot" (closed wires or position 1 on bar switch). On my 19 300i, position 2 (open circuit, i believe) on my bar switch is the stronger (not really very hot) setting, opposite of what the book says. It was a pleasent surprise to play with the switch and get some missing zoom! Thank you for all you do and share!

So.. bought a 2020 tx300i husky. noticed the same thing you seemed to.. power lull.. but I didn't unscrew anything.. after 2 hour mark suddenly... boom. The PIPE came on. I suspect it may be a pre set in the mapping during break in period. Now the second map is still similar to that gentle early hours, with the ignition delay and seemingly no high end or "pipe", which catches a bad wrap but it is great in first and second for slow nasty steep shale scale rock on incline with loose rock and football sized clusters... Any way I suggest to others wait till some of the break in is done.. before adjusting. like I say... 2.1 on the hour counter and the bike just exploded and started screaming. After 5 hour it seemed to be broken in and man... its honestly just a perfect storm. Cheers!

@MGTOW CAT FOOD SALESMAN you absolutely can, but it is still not modern by KTM engine design standards. It's roughly the same engine from around 2000. While it is the best of Japanese 2ts IMO, it is not nearly as refined as the KTM engine. And just hang on it's days are numbered. The fact that Yamaha has not even hinted at adopting an injected 2t looks pretty damning that when that bike can no longer make the emissions they will just drop it. If you want 2 strokes to continue into the future they have to change and KTM is doing a great job with it.

I'm starting to lean more towards a 250x. The removal of the kick start is a deal breaker for me. I've heard nothing but positive reviews on the YZX's and very little negatives on the 300'$. Your not going to find a 300 in either brand on the used market! Believe me, I've been looking for 5 years. If they have, they are sold the day they were posted. As tight as the trails are around here where I live, I don't think the extra 50cc. is going to be missed. If I want more torque, I can always change the front & rear sprockets and a complete FMF exhaust. Your about my size Kyle what are your thoughts?

Zechariah Stanley this is on google, because I can’t explain it that well haha. :The TPI system in its 2018 EXC two-stroke range that it claims makes the engine smoother and reduces fuel consumption, but how does it work? ... In the KTM system, two-stroke oil is pumped into the throttle body, to lubricate the crankshaft, barrel, and eventually the cylinder bore and rings.

Should you buy it? Not only NO, but hell NO. KTM’s decision to ONLY offer fuel injection on the new 250/300 XC and XCW’s was beyond stupid. KTM’s decision to drop the kick starter was beyond stupid. These bikes are still sold as a Closed Course bike in the US, so the TPI decision is OBVIOUSLY not about the emissions. Do you like getting stranded in the middle of nowhere? Imagine having a Rekluse clutch (meaning you cannot bump start), and being stuck 20 miles from the truck because your battery dies. Or maybe the fuel injection has decided to stop working (as has been WIDELY reported on the ’18 and ’19 bikes). I have 3 KTM’s, all with carbs and a kickstarter. All 3 have been awesome and reliable, but they are the LAST KTM’s I’ll buy, assuming KTM doesn’t come to their senses. And the only way KTM is going to do that is if people outright reject KTM’s poor decisions.

I thought these new bikes had two maps. One more aggressive than the other?
@TagTeamDream
@TagTeamDream 4 жыл бұрын
This is true. But you have to take off the seat and unplug it for the 2nd map. You can hook it up to a button if you want. Most people say map 2 is horrible anyways and to just stick with map 1

xc or xc-w...
@BrianLampright913
@BrianLampright913 5 жыл бұрын
babur.karaoglu I had that same debate and it depends what you ride. I ride the same stuff Kyle rides here in Utah and I got an 18 300xcw which is amazing for singletrack mountain riding but in the open desert suspension holds it back. I sent the suspension off to Kreft last week to make it closer to a XC hopefully that will give me the best of both worlds.

Also, the XCw suspension was actually better than I expected in the desert I thought it would be a marshmallow and it wasn’t. I could still hit whoops and other high speed obstacles fairly well, but I had to be more careful than an XC or my Honda which has ProAction modified suspension for desert/MX. If you are a fast rider (you race) you might want the XC. If you are more of a trail rider that isn’t as fast and aggressive you’ll like the w suspension in stock form. The w is amazing in rocks and roots.

I ride both, 300 is actually more mellow and super wide powerband with more torque. It’s better for technical riding. The 250 revs quicker and hits a bit harder and is really fun in more open riding.

Lol. You say everyone wants to nitpick & split hairs. Just after talking about a one tooth difference in the rear sprocket & other things. Lol Plus that really didn't tell us if we should buy it? Sounds like you should just buy something used. With bike prices being stupid high.

Not really selling the bikes there.... Out of the box slow, no real advance over the model it replaces and air fork on an Enduro bike is completely crazy. Never mind not having a kick start, at least you can run start the engine. What happens when, not if, the air fork collapses? All this for $1500 more than Factory model Sherco or fully loaded Beta in Australia. Lots of gullible orange people out there. 👍
