Hey Shay, glad to hear you're doing fine for the most part, I really hope 2021 steps up more than just a number from 2020. I couldn't help but notice you mentioning Star Craft II several times in this video and was wondering if you ever considered to make an analysis not about the whole game, but about some of the story elements or the characters. Tychus Findlay for example is my favorite character in Star Craft II, maybe even in all of Star Craft and I think he deserves some more ramp light, as I feel many people hate him without fully understanding him. But hey, it's just a KZbin comment from a guy you don't know, don't feel pressured into doing something like this. It would be great tho, since I really enjoy your videos, even if they tend to be slightly longer than 10 minutes.

I know I’m way late on this and you’ll probably never see this, which is completely fine. But my curiosity has reached the point where I really want to ask anyways. You sorta eluded in this video that you like metroidvania games. But what led to you preferred Metroid over castlevania? Is it just nostalgia/personal attachment? Do you prefer scifi over fantasy? I’m just curious

You absolutely should go the emulator route. I'm as much of a perfectionist as you are, but it's never a good idea to sacrifice time and energy and money for something that ultimately won't make a modicum of difference in the end product. I'm extremely excited for your Sun & Moon review, your ORAS review is how I discovered your channel, I watched the entirety of the video :)

Hey man, don't be self conscious about your accent when you record, personally I enjoy it because it differenciates you from other channels who might make similar things and coming from someone who obviously has a different dialect, it adds more entertainment to your videos because since you utilize a large vocabulary, your words can pack a lot more punch with an accent than if it were just spoken like everyone else. I know its a cliche to say yknow its what makes you unique but it is and no matter how you slice it, your videos will always have that and embracing it will only help you and your channel. Love your stuff!

for what it's worth, your omega ruby video was probably my favorite video on all of youtube. never before have i found somebody who was able to so perfectly sum up my thoughts on piece of entertainment media while at the same time bringing a fresh angle to them. people don't appreciate these days that not everything in the world can be fully explored in a 280 character tweet. as someone who thinks a lot, often times way too much for their own good, it's inspiring to see somebody channel a personality trait i've never liked about myself into amazing analysis of my favorite pieces of artistic media.

Others may think of the '7 hours!' thing as click bait, but I would always prefer to listen to longer videos so I don't keep having to look for something else. (Among other reasons) while I'm working and especially while I'm doing the dishes. So to me 7 hours wasn't so much click bait as tailored to my exact interests.

Man the Pokemon rant was cathartic. I think it's incredibly unreasonable to direct blame towards the developers of Pokemon at Gamefreak who'd honestly rather not have so little time to make their game. Especially in documented stress and incredible difficulties in terms of these console moves with time constraints. I'm really looking forward to any Pokemon videos you make because there's a large amount of people who overlook a lot of good changes and interesting ideas. It's sad upon release SuMo was incredibly liked, but now it gets dismissed often. There's a lot there I think Pokemon games should keep building on. Despite the pfp I myself place SuMo about middle of all Pokemon games as well, but a lot it's peaks when it's going are extremely impressive. To me there's so much life and genuine ideas shining through that it's just blantantly untrue to say Pokemon doesn't change or isn't trying. Even with people's dissapointment in regards to SwSh and personally being kinda eh on it, I've never gotten that sense of Pokemon being on a downfall and that one game I'm not keen on meaning the series can't do good things.

I have to disagree, although I’m not sure about time difficulties and stressful deadlines, I feel like Pokémon needs to evolve way more. Sun and moon imo were a good step, changed up the structure of gym challenges, focused on a better plot, and are aesthetically maybe my favorite Pokémon games. Sword and shield really disappointed me because despite some quality of life changes for competitive players, the main game was so linear and boring with nothing to explore. It really felt like they just said fuck it with sword and shield, the whole game feels like less than games that came out ten plus years ago. Sorry for the super long texr TL;DR sun and moon were good, but sword and shield made me lose faith in game freak for sure
@alfo2804
@alfo2804 3 жыл бұрын
Sun and Moon was one step forward, but USUM, Let's Go and SwSh were three steps back. And for as much as Sun and Moon shook things up, the fact that it took 20 years to make those changes is proof of the absolutely inert state of the franchise. Even with as much as it altered, the game is still about you travelling through a region, doing 8 big events, defeating an evil team, encountering a legendary Pokémon, beating 4 more people, beating one last person and then the game is over. Pokémon does not have to follow such a rigid structure, and yet it always does. Having all of those elements in place is not integral to a Pokémon game - the only thing a Pokémon game needs is Pokémon and the ability to make them battle. Beyond that, the game can do literally anything it wants with its story, structure and world layout, and yet they never have - that's pure stagnation.

I think you are the only man capable of holding my ADHD attention span for 7 hours straight Edit: pokémon Gen 7 is my favorite, but yeah, the intro is quite rough Edit: if I could re-experience any game for the first time again, it would definitely be Paper Mario: Origami King. I love that game to bits, even with the flawed battle system. Edit: I have also been interested in dipping my toes into making video essays. Ideas that come to mind include something along the lines of “Why _______ is an Underrated Classic”. I wanna make videos that I myself would watch and enjoy, like such. My big problem is... well, myself. My motivation past just brainstorming is more often than not scarce. Another thing is how I naturally hate my own voice. In mid December, I did a French project where I had to record myself talking about various subjects in French. I could *not* go through the audio without wanting to pull my hair out.

Been over a year cince this Q & A was posted, and decided to go back to it because I wanted more Shay content :v (no offense, you got your own schedule). Upon going back to it, I have a few things to comment on. While I try writing those thoughts out, I'd like to make timestamps, because why not (hope no one minds :V ). P.S. After an hour or so, I decided to make timestamps into two parts, just in case I run into the text limit (has happened to me before) PART 1 0:00 Introduction 1:37 Channel Update 10:10 "Will you ever do an in-depth video about another Pokémon game?" 13:51 "How do you like Gen VII compared to other mainline Pokémon games?" 16:12 "Have you played Subnautica?" Need to play this myself, honestly. 16:41 "If you had to erase a video game from existence, what would it be?" Share the same thoughts on the first part, but would choose either Dual Destinies or Persona 5 17:59 "If you could forget a game to re-experience it for the first time, what would it be?" Same 18:34 "How long did it take you to make the Omega Ruby video?" 18:50 "Is there anything you wish you had gone over in the Omega Ruby video?" 19:23 "What possessed you to make a seven hour video in the first place?" 21:15 "Top 3 games?" 24:39 "What's it like having your accent?" 31:11 "Retrospective thoughts on that Brexit video? Do you think it was worth the time investment?" 35:49 "How do you feel about being seen as the seven hour Omega Ruby video guy?" 36:57 "What's your favourite part of video making?" 37:52 "Current thoughts on Pokémon as a whole?" 45:21 "Which video are you most proud of in terms of production?" 46:11 "How long will we have to wait for your DYKG feature?" 46:22 "How many Exhaustive Looks do you think you are going to make?" 47:51 "What have been the biggest misunderstandings in your videos?" 51:22 "Any game you haven't played yet, but you want to?" Yeah, you'd probably like SMT... At least I'd imagine that you'd like it (though the series or company, Atlus, hasn't been as great cince the jump to 3DS). Seeing as you like Metroid for how it uses its gameplay/game design/atmosphere/etc. to evoke certain things from its players (I.e. Fusion and 2), as well liking Pokémon, I'd find it somewhat off if you didn't like it at least somewhat. Each of the alignments reflects a different mentality the people have towards different circumstances, and (when the games are good) they sorta encourage reflection on that, as your perspective defines which ending you choose. One of the reasons Nocturne gets lots of praise in the series is because it goes for more of a minimalistic storytelling approach that helps make its world feel realized and encourages the player to think about how they view the events in game, etc. One of the problems with modern Atlus is tied to how they handle alignments... and that ties into the *many* problems with P5 (hence what I said earlier). 53:11 "Thoughts on Oxenfree?" 53:29 "Any video idea you want to take a stab at, but just can't find a way to make it work?" 1:00:32 "Prequels video when???? /s" 1:00:39 "Why is your Metroid II/Samus Returns video no longer public?" Shame it isn't public, but a quick google can get it. Still would be nice to be unlisted, as I think it is one of the best videos on Metroid 2 and Samus Returns I've seen, and it'd be nice for more people to check out to at least get a better understanding of Metroid 2. I also agree that it didn't give Metroid 2 the criticism it deserved, as I think the biggest reason people might get lost in the game is because it doesn't actively teach you about one of it most important mechanics. If you pause the game, you'll notice a number where the Metroid counter usually is. This number represents how many Metroids are left in the area. If you don't know how many are left, you might feel inclined to second guess where you are/have been, which doesn't help when put together with the intentionally repetitive level design. I can see the earlier areas of the game being off-putting for all of that. 1:02:43 "Do you have any thoughts on Sonic Utopia?"

Timestamps PART 2 1:06:48 "Do you have any wishes or worries about Metroid Prime 4?" Wish I could say I didn't have any worries, personally... But Nintendo and, from what I've heard/seen, Retro Studios haven't been the same cince Iwata has passed (May he Rest in Peace). I do have one *WISH* for the game. I am not the biggest fan of the Prime games, especially Prime 1. My issues with Prime 1 actually have some of the issues presented in ShayMay's Sequelitis Response video. The one wish I have towards Prime 4 is that I want them to make the controls a bit more cohesive. I think the controls on the GameCube versions are *GREAT*, but I think the handling towards Beams and Visors was sort of unnecessary and less seamless than I would need to fully enjoy the game. For the Beams, I don't think there is a lot of value in forcing me to use different Beams, as they function the same way from a Mechanical standpoint (Prime 2 tried to justify this more and Prime 3 got rid of it, so this is mostly a Prime 1 issue). As for the Visors... For example, whenever I would Scan an enemy after entering a room, I would have to disengage my Lock-On to exit the text blurb and switch to Combat Visor. I should be able to switch Visors at the end of a text blurb to seamlessly get back into the action. Not being able to do that led to me getting hit by an enemy multiples times. This might not seem like its too big a deal, as the game is pretty easy.. and I know that seems like the most MINOR detail, but this is reflective of a lot of the problems I have with Prime 1. 1:10:05 "What's your most unpopular Sonic opinion?" 1:11:06 "Do you plan on covering Archie Sonic and Sonic the Comic?" 1:12:49 "What are your thoughts on the drop dash?" 1:13:23 "What are your thoughts on some STC-exclusive characters" 1:16:27 "If there's anything you don't like about STC, what is it and how would you change it?" 1:17:33 "What was your first STC Online strip about?" 1:23:10 "What happened to the audio?" 1:23:40 "What's your favourite STC Online story?" 1:24:16 "If you could change anything from the original STC continuity, what would it be?" 1:24:40 "How do you plan things at STCO?" 1:25:33 "What's a game you'd consider an unpopular or underrated gem?" I have my problems with TW101 and to a greater extent, Platinum Games, but that is something I am going to try and cover a bit in another comment, as that is the big reason I am even writing out these timestamps (to get myself into the mindset to write up my thoughts on this and that), plus that'll be a more detailed comment... Not that anyone'll probably read it, but, eh... (oh and I'm mostly writing this as well to get my mind off an upcoming appointment) 1:33:49 "What advice would you have for someone looking to get started making critical videos?" 1:35:48 "What's your process for making videos?" 1:37:51 "Who would win, one of each Pokémon or one billion lions?" 1:38:00 "What other creators have you drawn from?" On one hand, a part of me likes Matthewmatosis... And I do agree that he is probably one of the best when it comes to understanding a lot of the aspects of game design and analysis... but that is sort of why I can't help but feel annoyed/frustrated with the direction he started slowly shifting towards (probably unintentionally, considering his "Meta Microvideos") before he would, inevitably, burn out on making videos. Not interested in going back to his videos, sadly :/ . Not too big on The Geek Critique, but generally like TheGamingBrit, which I find amusing as its because of the similar energy they share that I feel that way. Other than that, you introduced me to hbomberguy and B-mask, though. Which is great, nice to discover "new", good KZbin channels/videos. 1:46:45 "How has your sweet child, Lava Reef Zone, been doing?" 1:46:55 "Have you ever wanted to work in game dev, either as a designer or an artist?" Ahh, haven't we all partially wanted to work on a game? I mean, if we like games enough to think about them to this extent, I'd imagine it naturally lends itself to wanting to work on one. 1:50:37 "What is the thing that most frequently captures your imagination, and how do you use it in your creative endeavours?" 1:53:11 "What would you change in the games industry today?" Lots of things that be nice if they changed, aren't feasible considering how the industry and society works... Which is a frustrating shame :/ 1:55:51 "You get free reign to resurrect a franchise or game that's not had a new entry in over a decade. What franchise?" Do the MegaMan StarForce and Battle Network series count (as they are technically MegaMan)? (If not, Shadow Hearts comes to mind.) I'd go for a more Rhythm-focused StarForce game and rework a lot of the systems to be better balanced and add a music system on to the cards... That way you can time your attacks to the music, creating great moments in the gameplay. (Imagine having your finishing attack land and the sound effect it causes lining up perfectly with the ending of the song.) 1:58:03 "What are your opinions of moths, and why are they superior to butterflies?" 1:58:18 "Favourite book of all time?" 1:58:39 "when is next vidya comin out?!!1" 1:59:00 "What kind of books do you read?" 2:01:16 "Who was your favourite teacher in school, and why?" 2:02:58 Outro Hopefully I can get my other comment out really soon... Hopefully someone actually reads that one.

Was going back to this Q & A (edit: awhile back that is, when I posted the other comment), and decided that I wanted to try and articulate my thoughts on something and have it written somehow/somewhere. I had said in the time stamps comment(s) I made that I wanted to make a post/describe my issues with TW101 and Platinum's work in a bit more detail, and thats what this is. I don't think I will be able to say everything I want to on the matter here, as its harder for me to write it all out (over being able to verbalize this)... Plus I doubt I'd be able to commit to writing all that for a comment that might not even get read by anyone. In fact, it took me *waaay* too long for just this, and I don't think all of this will be fully/properly conveyed with *just* text, so I wound up putting this off for, like, a month or so. Only getting back to it, cuz I want to get it done before another appointment. (Frankly, I feel as though it would be so much easier if I could just post the points and have someone ask question about some of it as a back and forth to make it all go so much smoother) 1:31:50 This has been my problem with most of Platinum's/Kamiya's games. It is the biggest detraction that, honestly, makes me not want to play them at all. And I usually feel as though that's something that might be misconstrued by some. (because I wouldn't really get the chance to explain part of my mentality as to why that is.) A) When I play a game, I want to get the most out of the game/experience. When you think about it, that makes perfect sense. If you were to spend money/time on a game, you would naturally want to get the most out of your time with said game. That extends to getting 100% (as close as possible, at least) and trying for the best ranks/etc. B) When I beat a game, I am done with it. That isn't to say that I won't *ever* play it again, but rather that I got the experience I wanted from the first playthrough/main campaign/whatever, and I want to move on to something else. Again, this does make sense when you think about how many games there are out there. There are hundreds of games I'd like to try/experience, so settling down to only replay one limits my time to something I already experienced. I think that these are mentalities that lots (most) of people might share, whether they realize it or not. I can see a lot of people falling off these kinds of game without really getting *why* they dropped them, in favour of other more "approachable" games (i.e. safe, AAA, first party games, etc.). Games like Bayonetta, TW101, DMC, etc. are designed with their ranking systems in mind. The depth of their combat is the focus and a proper scoring/ranking system is needed to both justify most of its mechanics/combos, as well as encourage engaging with the mechanics as much as possible. So obvious, if I were to play/buy a game like these, I would want to do that from the get-go. After all, that is the point/focus of the game. I have to imagine that general audiences feel somewhat similarly. Typically (from what I've seen), whenever the people who tend to like/"get into" these types of games try to "help" get others into them (recommend these games to others), they usually say things along the lines of "don't let it bother you if you get a 'bad' rank", "ignore the ranks on your FIRST playthrough" and etc. I find that thinking like that tends to be (unintentionally) reductive/dismissive towards the how I (and others) approach games and what I want from games (though tbf, it is probably a bigger deal to *me* as I have bad OCD with this kind of thing). Asking me to play the game that way just feels like they are disregarding the issues *I have* with the games, as well as *why* they are an issue. Saying stuff like that frames the first playthrough in a negative light. If I *WANT* to play the game the way I planned, which is to focus on learning the mechanics and getting the best ranks, then I *HAVE* to beat the game first and then *replay* it. This just makes the game come across as a slog to get what I wanted to get to in the first place. And at that point, I'd rather just play something else. Some might take that as "the game simply isnt for you", but do you honestly think I wouldn't like games like these? That I wouldn't *like* to *enjoy* these kinds of game, but I can't because of this? It doesn't and shouldn't have to be like that. The obvious/best solution would be to add an "Instant Retry" option, that allows you to retry the specific fight you got a "bad" rank on immediately after being shown said rank (There is a lot that I'd like to say about this, but that is best left for another time). Even people who might not "care" about ranks and stuff, as it is "optional", would be inclined to try again, and learn more about the mechanics/etc. Which would in turn, help some of the conveyance issues that can happen in games like these (I am reminded of that on "Unite Guts is useless" journalist. Can't say I blame *them* when its kind of the games fault). The problem is that games like Bayonetta 1 and Astral Chain both *technically* have a system like this in play. I'll use Astral Chain as my example, to better emphasize the problem. Let's say you want to go for the best rank on any given fight. In Astral Chain, if you get a score you don't want, then, while you are still on the Rank screen, you can go to the home screen, shut the game off and restart at your last checkpoint so you can try again. I have seen *some* think/suggest, "Oh, well, that's alright, *you* are the one who wants to try again for the best rank, which is *optional*, so its fine if you have to do that or whatever"... But the problem is much bigger than that, so let's recontextualize this. Let's say you are playing the game, going for the best rank in a fight and you wind up not getting the best rank. Suddenly, THE GAME CRASHES and the game closes out and you have to turn on the game again. This is basically a technical problem that isn't recognized as a technical problem. Imagine if there were, like 100 fights and this happened 2-5 times a fight. That'd make 200-500 crashes throughout the game. With that being said, I should hope framing my problem like that gives a better idea on why it can be difficult to actually get into games like this. Now, I could go on to make comparisons between the similarities to rank systems and live systems in older platformers, how*exactly* games punish players and why getting a GOOD score can *still* be a punishment, my problems relating to something Matthewmatosis said in his TLoU2 video (mechanical introvert/extrovert and how he didn't *actually* flesh out that idea properly) and how that relates to all this, how all this ties into my concerns towards the direction Platinum Games *might* be heading and why it should be a big concern... and I could stand to be a bit more detailed on some of what I've mentioned, but this has dragged on far enough. Besides, just mentioning this at the end of all I've said should be enough to make it kind of obvious where I'd go with all that. I'd like to post this now, before my appointment, so I am just gonna leave it at this. (So, my bad for anything that I didn't write properly)

Shay you gotta know we love you, man. Best of luck in all your endeavors. I'll watch your 54 part series of sonic the hedgehog even if I can stand the pasty armed rodent because I love that accent of yours.

Re: Heroes of the Storm. To this day, it's the only MOBA I've been able to play where I'm not falling asleep halfway through my first match. Just a shame that the game has both been abandoned by its creator, and that the company itself is abjectly awful and should not under any circumstances be supported.

How ambitious are you? Do you plan on hitting it REALLY big and make videos for a living, or if you don't look at as your go-to, do you at least consider it as an option?

The way the answer and the following question are structured just makes me think this "hot Sonic take" is something related to the American Sonic comics. How bad could it possibly be? :P

Also no you don't collect demons in Digital Devil Saga, you might be thinking of something like Soul Hackers. Regardless, SMT is probably right up your alley (Heavy themes, story based, JRPG)

It was the bit where Zeratul says, "my life for Aiur." It's such a perfect bit of clarity for that character, and then it's followed up with Artanis flying around like he's on a string shooting lightning everywhere. It's the kind of thing that'd make George Lucas go, "that's a bit much."

@@shoogles_ Thank you, SC2 cutscenes start to get a little Dragon-Ball in the choreography haha. The most resonant moments come from 1 personally. Like Tassadar willingly giving himself up to fradulent 'justice' to spare his species unnessecary deaths.

The funny thing was, for me, it was the only way I got to experience some of those classic stories, since I came in post-100! Would I have preferred new stories and the chance for it to keep going? Yes. Unquestionably.
