2020 Subaru XV e-Boxer Off-road Driving, Design and Interior

The new Forester and the smaller XV Crossover will have mild-hybrid technology - as part of the company's move to electric.
Both e-Boxer models, with their horizontally opposed powertrains, have a 2-litre (150) petrol engine and are boosted by the motor-assist technology.
Mild-hybrid technology boosts the engine when needed and can deputise for it over short spells.
Both cars have all-wheel-drive (AWD) as standard.
The Forester e-Boxer is new, the XV is not - apart from becoming a mild hybrid model. The Forester has a new platform and better driving dynamics. The level of technology is high: facial recognition, new X-Mode and reverse automatic braking.
Both are due for sale in November. The Forester kicks off from €44,495 for SE models. Prices for the XV e-Boxer start from €38,945.
The system uses a Lineartronic transmission that integrates an electric motor, powered by lithium ion battery, DC/DC converter and electric motor inverter.
The Forester felt comfortable and spacious if a little slow to respond (but the stepped CVT transmission didn't generate much 'boom') on my brief drive.
There are three driving modes: Engine, EV and Motor Assist. And there is also SI-Drive which lets you choose between 'Intelligent' and 'Sport' modes.
The 2-litre 150bhp horizontally opposed 4cyl has 80pc new components and is up to 11pc more efficient. From starting off, or at low speeds, the electric motor alone can power the car for around 1.6km. Above that, engine and motor combine and at high speed the engine takes over completely while charging the battery as well.
Safety technologies (standard) include EyeSight Driver Assist and Driver Monitoring System. The latter alerts you of fatigue or distraction. It also automatically adjusts driver settings for seat position, door mirror angles, and air-con preferences. Smart.
An important element too is the Reverse Automatic Braking function which helps avoid collisions.
Overall Forester width is up 20mm, the wheelbase is stretched 30mm, and there is 220mm of ground clearance for off-tarmac driving. It has a towing capacity of 1,870kgs.
There is also an SE Premium version (€48,195, 18ins alloys, sunroof, leather seats, sat nav, electric tailgate, heated rear seats).
The XV e-Boxer has the same 2-litre petrol engine and 'hybrid' set-up and many of the safety/comfort elements outlined.
The €38,495 SE model has 17ins alloys, electric/heated driver's seat, dual zone air-con, etc.
For €41,495, SE Premium adds sunroof, sat nav, etc.

I have a JKU (wrangler) that I take off-roading but I want something comfortable to drive and that has good mpg BUT also good off-road capability. This fits the bill and I’m planning on giving a 2 inch lift from subtle solutions, replacing the wheels and putting some 30in bfgs on it. It will drop the fuel mileage by a couple mpg but still an upgrade. Perfect car for me plus safer for my daughter

It will get better gas milage but it will depreciate quicker :\.. Atleast it doesn't have the carbon buildup pinging issue the regular ones have. Dont ask about the pinging just search around on Crosstrek forums. I got it and have found hundreds with the same. Premium fuel stops it and Subaru has no clue what to do...

Direct injection...toyota uses both port and direct to get around carbon buildup. Pinging could also be due to high compression ratio which premium fuel fixes...more than likely there will be a software fix to the ecu my guess

Subaru has no clue what to do so thats why they sell a fluid to clean up the carbon. Type "Genuine Subaru Carbon Clean" in Google. It costs 8$.

They would have to revise the engine for the fix...they don't want to admit it is my guess. Cheap fix is selling tge fluid...Honda has similar issue and so do sone Ford models.

Umbra says dealer uses a better one and they said from experience it lasts about 1500-2500 miles. It’s why Subaru was willing to front the bill to pull the heads.

So very simple to me. A medium car -nothing special like a Focus or a T-Roc- costs with some options a couple of hundreds euros less than a an almost fully equipped, well fabricated, premium quality and easy to operate XV that offers REAL all wheel drive, leather seats and eyesight stock. The snout and the ass of the XV look pretty good to me. Color range is just good. Towing capacity is beyond normal and it has clearance. Towing hook mounting included costs only 600 euros. On that comes that it is related to our allies which I find very important.. Speed does not interest me because we are not allowed to go over 80 miles an hour. It has a 1.6 gas 114 HP engine and CO 2 lays at about 146gr/km. But we have many bumps on our roads and space under your car is demanded. So that all sits good. Today, in Belgium, buyers do not know what to buy to be safe for a decade. Our government does not promote EV's nor hybrids in any way and we do HARDLY have charging stations. So there are not many options. Either, in Belgium and in the time being, you invest in the cheapest vehicle there is on the market and then within some years go over to an electrified vehicle or you cut the apple in two right away and go for the XV e-boxer. Even taken into account the most uncertain rapid introduction of EV's in Belgium an XV comfortline normal boxer 1.6 could be a valid option.Then we are talking (only) 28500 euros. The XV e-boxer allows you to have an ecologically conform vehicle for ten to fifteen years that will give you the certainty to get access to our cities at all time beside its utility. Today older gas and diesel vehicles are simply banned from the cities. Personally I do not like a full electric vehicle. I don't know it and I trust much more a conventional powered vehicle.The XV e-boxer has both to a certain acceptable extend. Subaru announced earlier this year the XV e-boxer would cost around 34.500 euros. The question remains however what electric vehicle could I buy for this price? A ZOE 20.000 euros, a Peugeot 208 30000 euros, a OPEL Corsa EV at 34000 euros and maybe a VW ID. I say MAYBE because the price ie 30000 euros for the ID announced by VW relates to the dull basic version. Mostly very small cars no? Then come the costly options on top of that. A BMW i3 costs 41000 euros. This is my way of thinking. Thank you.

Sooo to all of you that have a crosstrek,question?. I just bought a 2019 crosstrek for my wife, it is the first Subaru I have ever had it only has 61 miles on it but the AC does not get near as cold as my 2018 toyota Camry. Is this something that I am just going to have to live with or do I need to have the AC looked at. The Camry starts getting cold almost immediately but the crostrek never seems to get near as cold.

Backcountry Adventure we dont have an option in the UK. Theres still a few manual XVs for sale, last shape though. Subaru are only interested in safety and economy in this country now. Only the BRZ has a manual gearbox. The traditional buyers were farmers, and rural dwellers. The older shape Foresters were a big hit here, with manual gearboxes, but since 2013 they seem to be aiming their cars at......well im not sure really :(

If your camry lifts 1 frontwheel it is stuck.....slipping differential remember? All power goes to the freespinning wheel and you are done. Also, have you seen the bumps and ruts? You would have destroyed your front lower wing or sump. Offroad always looks alot flatter on video than it is in real life.

Nd the joke is that in the UK, 99% of these if not all, will be on PCP lease deals, and nobody would dare take it off road because of potential damage on a car they will never own. Laughable really. 4x4 enthusiasts run old Land Rovers and Suzuki Jimnys with all terrain tyres etc. This XV is a very good car but unlike the old Forester of the 90s, bought by farmers and used as a workhorse for ten years, this is a town car for people who just like to be a bit different. Nothing wrong with that, but it makes tests like this pointless.
