Thanks for the video. My wife and I are seniors so I've been looking for a good non-carbureted outboard for our jon boat. We also want the electric start and I'm going to go with power tilt/trim. Your videos helped me decide on the Suzuki 9.9. Suzuki should sponsor you for all the outboards you've helped sell for them. Happy boating!

Really enjoyed the video. Been researching outboards for a while now. I was very pleased when I read the engine specs on the Suzuki website that the engines are the same displacement. The fact you can easily convert these to a 20 hp is perfect. I've always had a soft spot for old mercs but I think I've made my decision in thanks to your videos

I have a DF20 from mid 2018, still half a year of warranty. Very nice motor, BUT has a big issue with clogging of the (too) narrow cooling channels. Mine has been serviced professionally before (and last year even after) winter storage, but I just had 2 days of frustrating flushing and cleaning because my DF20 was overheating when we launched our boat for the new season. It goes into limb-home mode when the cylinderhead temp is 80-90°, which is a good thing of all the sensors (I have the SDS cable and software, so I can monitor the temperature). But after having spoken to a lot of mechanics who service outboard engines, they all agree that they’ve made the coolingchannels to narrow. Suzuki service centers now say you have to pull the starter cord a few times AFTER fully draining the engine (after the storage procedure as described in the manual), to get rid of the last drops of water, which could be the cause of the clogging. This is not described in the manual, and non-Suzuki mechanics are very surprised by this step (as the pump is not turning fast enough, and the impeller is too low....). I’m now “in battle” with Suzuki Marine Netherlands, what they are going to do with this: a special extra procedure, a modification, etc. So be very alert with fully draining every bit of water before storage. The water in our area (Netherlands) is fresh, certainly not salt, although some people claim it is getting a bit more brackish.

@@lukass8711 not really. I now have to flush the motor every year, also using some household vinegar with a little aquarium pump, which circulates it through the cooling system. I also use some compressed air, with the thermostat removed, as there is always something left behind. If it runs ok, it runs ok for the rest of the season.

Great video! Thanks so much for posting. I was going to go with the larger engine, but actually much cheaper to upgrade yourself. I also found out from Saturn, that 10 hp is pretty much maxed out, although they say you can use a 15 hp two-stroke on the Kaboat. I'm actually thinking I'm going with the 13 footer, so would probably not be wise to put a larger engine than 10 hp on it. I was really hoping to put a jet on the 20, which would work out to about 14 hp, but too heavy for these boats. The Suzukis look really well-made.

Very nice explanation and walk through. Is there a fuel shut off valve anywhere inside the cowling? What’s driving the “high pressure” fuel pump? Is there a simple way to determine fuel presence at the injectors? I’m trying to get one of these running again. It ran fine then wouldn’t start or run. The cut out switch (lanyard) operates normally and the engine has oil and a supply of fuel.
@laingej
@laingej 3 жыл бұрын
@@apackwestbound5946 no theres no fuel shutoff. The hight pressure fuel pump its electric. Try to squeeze the hose going to the injectors it is always pressurized 44psi should be rock solid you cant pinch it. If you can squeeze it then there no fuel there but if its hard it is good. Did you check the spark? Check this othe vid i got : Suzuki 9.9hp/20hp problem fixed - Fuel stabilizer issue part 2

I guess the only downside of the fuel injected model versus the older carburetor version (Suzuki DF9.9a) is the giant number of sensors that could go wrong, time will tell. But not having to deal with carb clogging up is a big plus side.

The 321cc 9.9 is at the price of the 20 +/- 50$, with small boat, better buy the 20 AND the restriction plate to have it limited to 10 hp for 11ft boats and then have all power with a bigger hull. Plus, gas shock loaded flaps at the transom are better that those hydrofoils as they don't rob top speed.

Can you just unplug the gas tank and run it dry like a carb before transporting? What does the manual say to do?

Is not good to do that for the injection system. manual says drain it out.

Such a good video man! learned a bunch, will probably watch it a few times. I'm nearly ready about to purchase a Suzuki 9.9 but am curious to know if the one I have my eyes on is able to convert to 20hp if necessary in the future. It's model Suzuki 9.9 HP DF9.9BTHS3. Can't find any info about it in particular anywhere. Any ideas? Thanks!

Are you sure its a BTHS3? Dont see that model in the part catalog available in America.. theres a BTHS2 and you can do it on that one. What year is it? As long as its the 327cc EFI 9.9 motor you can

The only difference between the 9,9 ECU & 20 ECU is that you gain 400RPM. Dont bother spending $400 on it. Just remove the restrictior and change the prop to a 11 or 12'' so you don't get rev-limit. Just changing the restrictior gives you around 18HP. But if you want to spend $400 on an extra 2hp, go for it :D

So you just remove restrictor all together or but the 20hp restrictor and 11” pitch prop?

@@mikencrew8885 Indeed. If you have a light boat, 12'' should be good. if the boat is heavier than a lower prop is needed.

What about the ethanol in the fuel, wouldn't it wreak havoc on all the fuel line(s) and other components? Or because it is fuel injected vs being carburated, this is essentially a non issue..?? Awesomely thorough video btw.. thanks.. subscribed and will pay close attention to your upcoming maintenance videos as I'm planning on getting one..
