Because the lack of detents, the door motor holds the door in place so it doesn’t fall back closed when you’re parked on a slope. The motor feels when you start pushing the door and lets go. What you need to do is give it a short little push, then wait half a second while the motor feels that and lets go, then you can move it freely. If you push continuously the motor just thinks it’s the wind or gravity and holds the door in place. It’s the ‘you’re holding it wrong” of doors.

I live in a part realisation of this (Edinburgh), and a few years ago lived in a full realisation of it (London)... It is awesome. I genuinely forget that I have a car at my parents house when I'm able to just walk to everything I'd ever need and take a train or tram to everything else. It's so walkable here that before I went home at christmas last year on winter break from uni that I hadn't set foot in any mode of transport save for my bike since August and honestly hadn't missed on anything (probably because everything was shut). The point I think that is being made is that the hot air about EVs being the future that some cling on to is very evidently not true. They're just like normal cars and this video shows that normalisation and rationalisation like no other. They aren't some herald of a world saving future, they're a desperate cling onto the status quo to justify its continuation. Don't get me wrong, rural towns and sparse areas will need vehicles like this, but everyone living in suburban and urban areas should see the OP's post as their future, not some chintzy electric crossover.

My big question with Teslas and other new cars with extreme cutting edge tech, is will they make it to the used market and actually be feasible to drive? Not to mention batteries being a concern, (although in ten or fifteen years when a car like this becomes "affordable" I hope we've at least sorta figured that out) but what about the complex computer systems? What happens if a screen or two goes out? Is that gonna be a thousand dollar part? Those door motors can't be cheap to replace, and what if it turns out they are a part that fails like power window regulators from the nineties? What if Tesla decides to stop doing software updates for old models and the car gets all buggy? I had a couple cell phones that have done that in recent memory. Nothing wrong with the phone, just no more software updates so features just stop working. Tesla is probably not too worried about this now, but it's a huge concern for renewable energy vehicles. If cars become a throwaway item like cell phones, most of the environmental advantages to driving them will go away, and then what's the point?
