SUVs are absolutely revolting to many of us and there really isn't anything you can do to change that. @@cartilagehead The performance is not the problem; it’s the image. If Ford branded this thing as the ‘Escape ST’ or something, it would have the image of a peppy little crossover for soccer moms or other people who otherwise have no interest in cars. Fine. Whatever. But by calling it a mustang, Ford is trying to convince you that it’s something that it is not. For the last 50 years, Ford has marketed the mustang toward a younger audience as a fun, budget-friendly performance vehicle, with practicality being a secondary or tertiary concern. The byproduct of both this marketing and the actual demographic of people who drive mustangs is an association with young, usually irresponsible hoodlums who are likely to get your daughter knocked up and try to skip town…Or by middle aged guys trying to recapture their youth - but I doubt that’s the image Ford is trying to convey. Now, all of a sudden, this ‘mustang’ is being marketed as an eco-conscious, practical crossover that happens to have a respectable 0-60 time. So when you see this ‘mustang’ pull up to your house, instead of worrying about your daughter getting in a family way with the local self-branded rebel, you’ll think “I hope those kids have a nice time at Applebee’s.” It’s incongruous with everything Ford has been trying to convince consumers the mustang represents and to me feels incredibly disingenuous. I get where you're going with this but we all know the ONLY reason this vehicle, with its smoothed over Aztek profile (yah, I went there) got any substantial attention was it used the 'Mustang' name. If Ford gave it any other name, no one would even notice it. So, a great short-term sales move. BUT if the Mustang nameplate is considered iconic, the danger is dilution in the long term. Frankly, I think it would have been braver and smarter to make an electric version of the current Mustang.

There is no denying the fact that the Mach E is a well thought out, well engineered and futuristic vehicle. However, this is where i disagree with Roman, call me a mustang perfectionist or someone who doesn't move with the times, but to me if a mustang doesn't have a 2+2, RWD, short trunk long hood coupe or convertible design it is not a mustang. And no, I dont disagree with the Ghia or Fox body or new edge, because they fit this criteria, 2+2 long hood short trunk RWD. These are in fact mustangs. The Probe was FWD, so no. This was no a mustang, and this was why people were up in arms, and if I'm honest, I'm a little disappointed that the mustang community allowed this monstrosity to happen. The electrification is not the issue. Mustangs were never originally meant to be muscle cars, they became with time, but they were always meant to be THE pony car. It was meant to attract people who wanted something different, and unlike anything else on the road, in Iaccoca eyes, that was his vision. The Mach E is the 100% opposite of this. the Mach E is a car that appeals to the masses. Its a generic looking SUV with Generic looking wheels with a generic 4 door design with a Generic infotainment system. This is has nothing to do with that it is electric. For example, I'm a huge fan of the electric Cobra Jet. I feel that Ford was threatened by the rise of Tesla. So they made a copy of what they make, and slapped a mustang pony on the front, because, lets be honest, nobody would give a shit about an electric ford SUV otherwise. Now people are trying to redefine what a mustang is. Which is wrong. Mustang has been this way for over 50 years. To me this is the "Vegan plant based burger" version of a mustang. It is meant to be like the real thing, but it is far from it. So lets just stop pretending. If you completely change the recipe and miss out all the key ingredients, how is it supposed to be the same thing? Look, maybe I'm just another whacko who is over-opinionated, and i know that in the grand scheme of thing my comment will make fuckall of difference. But seeing the brand I have been loyal to so long sell us out really leaves a bad taste in my mouth. And all I can say is support this if you want, but its not the real thing. The other day a man with a mach E pulled up next to me and waved at me in my s197. I just looked back, looked him in the eye and drove off. You are not one of us, and never will be. If you own a Mach E dont expect to get along with mustang enthusiasts, who have put all their blood sweat tears and money into thier cars.

You're totally right. RCR is really great at completely missing the point. The Mustang was always about being different and unique and its own thing. The Mach-E is just an Escape EV and the name is just plain disrespectful to people who grew up with Mustangs and loved them.

A Mustang is not what you define it to be, it's what Ford defines it to be. They are the owners. And your criteria is completely arbitrary. "I'm a little disappointed that the Mustang community allowed this monstrosity to happen"? What the hell are they supposed to do? Raid the Ford headquarters? That sentence has a concerning violent undertone. You just don't get to decide what a Mustang is supposed to be. Mustangs are always supposed to be what gives Ford money. Lee Iacocca has been dead for 2 years now, and they had moved on, as should you. Ford has every right to redefine whatever they want even it had been a certain way for 4000 years. Again, they own the logo. And things are constantly being redefined in the modern world, you should be used to it by now. The Mach-E is definitely not supposed to be the same thing as the Mustang. No one is pretending here. Just because it has the name Mustang you think it's supposed to be the same thing? It's supposed to be a mainly fast and "cool" electric SUV. They used the name Mustang for marketing sake, like you know, every car name ever. You were just fooling yourself by being "loyal" to a brand. They never gave a single shit about you. They just satisfy you when it's convenient for them. It's like it's a big reveal or something. It shouldn't be. Let that be a lesson for you to see corporations for what they always have been. And finally, be as criterious as you want about who can get into you little club, it's your right, but just get over yourself, man. You're like a 10 year old boy nailing a big wooden sign in front of a treehouse saying "NO GIRLS ALLOWED". It's not like they're missing the chance of a lifetime, they most likely don't even care. It's really not that big of a deal.
@chrisrandom14043 жыл бұрын
@@HeortirtheWoodwarden I have to disagree. There are multiple things wrong with your argument. 1) Yes a vehicle is not what we define for it to be. BUT Ford has spent over 50 years defining what the Mustang as a sport coupe/ convertable. It's really hard to change that criteria now. Especially with a die hard fan base. 2) While things change in the modern world many things stay the same. A car is a car, a truck is a truck, etc. It's like growing an apple and calling it an orange. Sure things change and you own the product. But an apple is still an apple. They're both round and fruit but not the same. Which leads to number 3. 3) They are pretending that they are the same thing. They even advertise it as being a horse from the same stable. They even said they were aiming to sell to enthusiats. They claim the Mach E comes from 50+ years of heritage. They are allegedly one and the same. Ford was banking on using the Mustang name to sell the Mach E. Instead it has alienated potential buyers. Consumers can't decide what a product is named but they do decide if it succeeds or fails. Year to date sales of the Mach E are DOWN compared to the Mustang. (According to Ford themselves.) If buyers are not buying them then there is a problem with the product. I doubt it's the electric part as Tesla has no problem selling cars. My guess is the name and backlash it has received. No other manufacturer calls an SUV after their iconic sports car. There's no 911 SUV (that's Cayenne), there's no Diablo SUV (that's Urus), etc. You see the the trend? Ford did make a mistake naming this after their iconic sports car. Not so much because they called it a Mustang but because THEY defined what a Mustang was for over 50 years. And THAT success is what hurts the Mach E.

@@HeortirtheWoodwarden Imma make this quick....Unlike keyboard warriors like you I have a life. Anyways. Ok. You know what man? You're right. You are completely right that ford has the right to do what they like with the mustang name. Just like I wrote in my original comment, I am probably just another over opinionated whacko, never asked anybody to listen to me. You read my comment and got offended. That's on you buddy. HOWEVER. Let me make this point so even a simpleton like you can understand. I work for a corporation, a very big one. Not saying which, but I'm paid pretty handsomely and have good benefits. So, I can't complain. But I understand how corporate structure works. And how it likes to shit on everybody and every single day I work I see how cruel and unforgiving the world is through the corporation's bullshit procedures. I see first hand how people are stupid and will believe whatever bullshit is thrown at them, whether we are talking about cars, or products, or brands, or social media posts. I understand that Ford is this exact same depressing way. They have a bunch of suits in offices controlling the business aspect with no humanity at all. Of course this is all for money. I'm not stupid. Financially this is the best move Ford could have ever done. What if, and it's a big "what if". For once maybe the hope of knowing that a company will do what is right instead of what will make the quickest buck. Maybe people get pissed off when they see a fucking SUV when they see their passion get destroyed. Maybe it's saying the era of real car designers are gone and replaced by a bunch of idiots in suits? The point I was making, which completely went past your head, was exactly what you proved. They did it for money. Are they allowed to? Yes, absolutely. Does that make it right? No. I don't wear brand name shit because I refuse to waste my money on bullshit. In the exact same way I will not spend money on this new "brand" of mustang. The people who buy it only do because they want the brand of being a mustang. Ford makes the mustang, but the owners made the name mustang mean something man. If it wasn't for the people buying mustangs in the first place they wouldn't have as big of a fan base to sell too. It's ecactly like sports. I'm not answering back to this anymore because I have more important things to do than start a keyboard warrior. I said what I had to say, and my opinion hasn't changed what so ever. You aren't a real enthusiast, so quite honestly I could give a fuck what your ass has to say. I don't need your faggot ass to tell me how company's are evil because beleive me I've seen first hand a company destroy people's lives, cause people to divorce, to losing custody of their kids to being suicidal. "This is a Mustang." In the same way Halo 5 is a "Halo" game. Yes, it nearly has all the makings of a Halo game, but it has fundamental differences in its' design that prevent it from being compareable to other Halo games, including Halo 4 by the same developers. Car guys and Mustang fans aren't pissed because the Mustang went electric, as Mr. Regular insists they are; they're pissed because the fundamental design of this car is as un-Mustang as possible. Even with the Foxbody, one of the most unique looks for the Mustang lineage, it was still a two-seater taking inspiration from their original pony-car design. This Mach-E isn't a pony car in any sense of the word; it's the fat wagon the horse carries around like a burden on the Oregon trail. If Mustangs were about making the driver feel good as Roman says, this Mach-E fails in that department because you're driving a fatass SUV trying to fit into their old gym clothes when they were in shape, that STARTS around $50,000, far more expensive than all the previous generations. For fucks sakes that's only a couple thousand dollars away from a brand new Porsche Macan (starting around $52,000) and with that you get a Porsche that actually makes you feel special inside because the material is nice. The value is laughable, because there are much better alternatives even if you pay less cash. (The Tesla Model Y starts at $47,000, and has a slightly longer range as well.) If the Mustang isn't judged on the merits of performance and "handling" (seriously Roman, not even Mustang diehards will try to call a Mustang a handling machine), the only thing it can be compared to across generations is its' looks and style. The Mach E has neither. Yes, bodystyling is one of the more superficial parts of car design because it's just looks, but it's also the most important in building an identity within your brand. A Bronco will always look a certain way, so will a Dodge Challenger or a Chevy Camaro. Even the new Corvette, with the engine in a brand-new place and no manual transmission option, that's still a Corvette because it looks like a Corvette should. Ford Mustang Mach-E: A car that managed to unite boomers and milennials in their hatred for a new product. Mustang Mach-E: For the hipster who thinks he's better than other hipsters.

Hell, half the rides he does are 50k and up and the “regular cars” that are reviewed aren’t reviewed with the same passion they once were, you’ll get a dime piece every once in awhile but for every pt cruiser, Prelude, New Yorker, shadow, and hell even raptor review, you get an explorer review (god it was horrendously slapped together, the Oldsmobile bravada got more effort). Not saying they don’t still have a passion for the business, you can just tell Mr. Regular especially has a more..”refined” taste. He doesn’t appreciate cars for being symbols of their time unless they’re quirky classics, or unless they wow him with performance, or make him feel important in a sense. Nothing wrong with it, it’s just an overarching theme I’ve noticed over the years that seems to trickle into the reviews now. I still love the show, I just wish Mr. Regular would be a bit more regular again. I'm sure a 2 door EV Mustang coupe is in the making but yeah unfortunately this Mach E is the "first" electric Mustang..🤦🏻♂️ Why didn't they name their first all electric vehicle the Model E?
@DrewLSsix3 жыл бұрын
Fundamentally that would have been wrong. "Much better" must mean high sales because that's the goal here, but $50k mustang coupes don't sell in great numbers, the Mustang coupe only sells as well as it does because there's a range of cheaper 4 amd 6 cylinder options. It's pure delusion to think that your favorite niche car is somehow everybody's favorite also. As for the crossover, I'm a huge fan. It's a return to the "right way" to design cars, some time after WWII the manufacturers decided that practical usable cars that could go most places while carrying people and stuff was old hat. So their marketers started working on you to accept the idea of a low wide swooping coupe or sedan as the ideal, and we ended up with a few generations of cars that couldn't handle a slick muddy driveway letalone a rutted back road or light off reading. No, for that you had to buy another vehicle from them. A truck or suv that shockingly was a pretty piss poor road car. You got taken by the ad men, twice! Even though each pitch contradicted the last. A crossover is just a 1954 or older sedan/wagon with modern engineering, its got enough ground clearance for a world that's not 90% highways and suburbs and doesn't massage your prostate by suggesting that a mock race car is appropriate for either lol.
@EmyrDerfel3 жыл бұрын
Calling it Model E wouldn't help sales. Model T and Model A are ancient history in car terms.
@andreanastacio95483 жыл бұрын
@@DrewLSsix infrastructure has evolved massively since the 40s and 50s... The vast majority of crossovers see next no no mud and truly poor terrain and, even if they did, I doubt the extra ground clearance would help that much if you`re still 2 wheel drive. (Most crossovers are generally just lifted hatchbacks, with the same underpinnings. Also modern SUVs are jokingly refered to as mall crawlers for a reason). You love crossovers for the utilility they add to a "normal" car, I dislike them because I find that the added ground clearance and body height doesn`t add that much, given compromize to weight, raised driving position (which I really dislike, but I know many prefer) and feeling of being connected to the road. Call me old fashioned, but at it`s core the mustang is, for better or worse, a "sports car", and the design convention for that is 2 door, low slung, and with a focus on driver enjoyment. The mach-e doesn`t adhere to the sports car formula (except maybe the driver enjoyment), and I as far as I am aware, that`s the reason for the backlash. They chose to call it a mustang, not because they deem it a worthy successor to the name, but because the name is among the most recognised "brands" in the entire industry, and will sell, and that annoys me, even though I am far from the biggest fan of mustangs, and would almost always have a camaro instead

I find it interesting how people always talk about the comparison on long road trips, how gasoline cars have the upper hand. This is true, road trips in electric cars, while usually possible, will take somewhat longer. But the vast majority of driving most people do isn't road trips, it's around town. The vast majority of trips are within the vehicle's range, meaning they just charge it up in the garage every night. This makes them better than gas cars, as you never have to go to a gas station, plus all the gas and maintenance costs it saves. A few people will do mostly road trips, and at least at the moment electric cars aren't as good for that purpose, but that's a small minority of people.
