2020 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid XLE Daytime Running Light/Turn Signal mod Install/tutorial

In this video, we are adding in some DRL/Turn Signal add-ons to the front end of my sons RAV4. Thanks to u/jgarmor12 in the r/rav4club subreddit for first doing this and giving up the idea to do it as well.

Dude, The idea to pull that plug is ingenious. I'm about to purchase one of these cars and all I ever see if people tapping into the wires. That's the last thing I want to do is cause corrosion in the line years from now creating a bigger problem. This way stops that from ever being an issue!

Just got down adding the lights to my 2021 Rav4 XLE. Premium. My turn signals had 3 wires going in, but the upper left tested out to be the one I needed. I used tap splices to connect. I also had to do a little reaming out to get my wires thru the grill. The plug in was too big. My light kit was a little different then yours, but your video helped a lot thanks! I also installed sequence lights on my mirrors. Really looks cool!

You don't have to drill a hole in the fuse box housing to install these lights. I have seen another video where the guy drills a hole downward in the fuse panel near the big red cable and you wont have to do that either. All you have to do is if you have an air compressor blow gun with the long metal extension you can insert it downwards in between the big red cable and the black cable. What it does is it loosens the black electrical tape around all those cables. With the blow gun inserted I ran a red wire into the center of the blow gun from underneath and slowly retrieved the blow gun while pushing up and advancing the red cable to keep it from getting stuck on the tape. Then when it is inserted through i basically went back and made sure the tape was secured again around all the cables without the need to drill.

I have the ‘check mark’ Lexus-y fog light housing version for the ‘19 Rav4 Adventure and the instructions were in Chinese so they have been sitting in the garage for a few months. Now I feel comfortable wiring them since the harnesses are the same.

Update: Just finished a similar mod of DRL/Turn signals to the rear. Since I was taking out all the rear door trim to work on the project, I decided to use the opportunity to purchase and do the cargo area lighting mod as well. Both turn out great and look fantastic. I have one last thing to do, and that is to get a new rear Toyota emblem to mount on the new rear trim. The new trim with the animated lights did not come with one. Rather than remove and transfer the emblem from the old trim, I ordered a new LED backlit emblem in blue, to match the color of the R4P. Hopefully it will be in this week. On your 2022 Prime what did you connect red wire to? Did you connect into fuse box and if so which fuse slot did you use? Also did you connect white wire? Did you tap into turn signal wire as they are led on 2022 Prime and headlights and marker lights are in one headlight unit. Appreciate your reply.

@@GregSwenson-lb3bw Sorry I missed this reply. Initially I had connected the red wire to the fuse box. Testing around I found a circuit/fuse that became active when the car was turned on. A few months I installed an 8 channel switch control panel. I connected the DLR to that controller so that I can manually switch it on or off from inside the car, along with my other mods. The yellow signal cables still connected just behind the left and right signal lights. So the signals will animate regardless if the DRL is turned on or not. As for the white wire. It is a dimmer signal. When you apply 12v to it, it seems to dim the DRL by about 50%. If my original setup, i left it unconnected. Keeping the DRL at full brightness. After putting in the control panel, I connected it to a pulsed channel on the controller just for kicks. Activating that channel causes the DRL's brightness to pulse. The pulse rate can be set in the control panel.

I put these on my 2020 Rav4 Hybrid. As you show, there are several places you have to cut the plastic to make it fit. Mine fits a little further out than I would like even after the trimming. The pieces are a not of the best quality and seem to have gaps around them between the lens and the lamps. I did not use the add-a-fuse method like you did. Seems to me your way they would be on all the time whenever the car is on; and I go to a lot of drive in movies, that would be a problem. I hooked up to the directional lamps for the directional wiring directly instead of using your through the socket method too. I got the power and ground from the outer most left lamp, as it is an incandescent lamp and these LED's use very little power so the added amperage is really negligible. So now my ADD ON lights are not DRL but Nightime Lamps that come on when the auto headlamps switch on. The sequential directionals still work during the day without the DRL function. I like the way I set mine up better, but I did solder into the wiring right next to the factory lamps. I also put the control box & wires underneath the plastic instead of on top of it, so it does not show. I placed the control box behind what I think is the 'radar unit'. If the 'radar' can handle the heat/rain there; hopefully the lamp control can handle it too. I will find out. Nothing is overloaded according to the vehicle or the meter I used, and the radar works perfectly.

I have a 2022 RAV4 prime XS and it has LED turn signals that apparently dealer must replace the bulbs when needed. To tap into turn signal wiring for sequential switchback DRL would it be best to use Posi-Products wire connectors rather than t-tap connectors since wires are so small? Also since you have recently removed these lights from your car, would you even recommend installing them?

Hi from Holland. Great job done! I’m in Holland and the lights differ from US specs models. Now I’m commissioned to the US Army for two years and I want to bring my RAV to California. In order to be able to import the car I need to convert the lights. EU spec models do not have the amber parking lights, so that section of the housing only serves the turn signal. That section for the US models double for both turning lights and the amber parking lights. The European models have just two leads leading to the section whereas the US versions have three. And the plugs are also different. Now if I want to change that all, where do I get the power from in order to power the bulb? Obviously I’m gonna need another socket for the bulb and another amber bulb. Same goes for the marker lights (front and rear) that also lack on other than US spec models. If done properly I would have to replace all four housings but that would be a costly affair. So if I start from there, maybe importing the car would be no hassle. Later on maybe further changes must be made, it all depends to what US regulations dictate or allow. I have plans to leave the car in the US when I leave again.

My guess is you are dealing with a completely different wiring harness. You will have to pull power directly from the fuse box as we did in the video. You will have a power lead for the amber parking lights you will have to splice into your new plug.

Yep. I ended up taking them out after about 6 months only. One of the the white LEDs started flickering on and off or just staying off and it looked kind of tacky. I can't really recommend the ones that I bought, but since then the quality of the products could have gotten better.

If you mean the daytime running light/turn signal mod for the fog lights, I do not plan on doing that. I've only seen one video (and it was pretty low quality with almost no explanation) and it is a much more intense process than this. You have to complete remove the front end plastic to get at and wire everything up with those. I did this because I knew it was going to be a pretty simple modification without having to take anything apart too much.

That rubber plug you removed for the yellow wire just poke a hole and insert the yellow wire then use that as a sealer for the wire

I have a question, it comes with black, red, yellow, and white cable. The black is ground, yellow goes with turn signal, and red to acc fuse box, to what did you connect the white cable to?

The white lead should connect to the headlight positive feed wiring. It dims the white light when the low beams are on. The red wire should be connected to the feed wiring for the front amber running bulbs (side lights in front, not turn signal). You can attach the black wire to the ground wire in the same feed. The side light is a better place to wire the red so the new front lights are only on when the "running " lights are on, not when the accessory fuse is hot.

Make sure your fuses match the wiring you are trying to protect.

Interested to know if yours are still working correctly? DSide on my set lost LED section and was acting erratic after 1 week. They replaced DSide only with a newer version and as a result the white color wasn't quite the same. 2 months later the PSide lost a section of LED's now. Great job on the video but I'm not thinking this is a quality product. I ordered from the same vendor as you.

I’m pretty sure they’re built into the unit. I believe if they ever go out, the whole headlight would have to be replaced. That’s at least the case with the 2014+ Corollas.

The Headlights on the 2019 RAV4 is a single unit! Yes Toyota screwed those of us who would like to either change out the current bulbs or even look for an aftermarket headlight unit to replace the current one! Since the 2019 is still considered a (New Auto) after market distributors haven't caught up yet!

You can connect the white wire to a feed wire to the low beams. The white wire will dim the new white lights when its hot, not really necessary in my opinion, I like it bright even when the headlights are on.

Unfortunately, I don't plan on doing this to my RAV. I thought about it, but there is just way too much work to get to the wiring you need to connect to, and to just install the reflectors. You have to pretty much remove the entire bumper and then some interior trim pieces to connect everything.

​@@martmalicdem1139 The video that I saw showed the wire running through the clip part of the connector and when the bulb is put back on, it just pinches it into place. Here is a link to a not great quality video, but they put the wire in the connector this way, kzbin.info/www/bejne/nKCzf4eCq8poY5o I would recommend playing it back at 50% speed as it goes pretty fast. This was the only other video I could find of someone putting these lights on and figured we needed to do this in-depth video on how to do it.
