Not sure why people are comparing this to an Emonda and complaining about the weight. The whole purpose of the Emonda is to be a super light climber. The purpose of the Domane is to be a good longer distance endurance bike. If you are trying to decide between those two bikes, then you haven't figured out what kind of rider you are. I've own two Domanes (and would love this new model), but I mostly ride centuries and double centuries. I would never ride an Emonda on a double. 18 lbs is not heavy for this type of bike.

@@user-ur5tc4bf3j The BikeRumor review I just read for the 2019 Roubaix put a size 52 at 18.1lbs (w/ Force eTap). Seems pretty similar. If weight means a lot, then the Domane is not the perfect bike for your needs. Hell, I run a 400g leather saddle because I prefer comfort over weight.

Its not the comparison to an emonda, its that its the SLR with DI2 is north of 7,500$ and for that kind of money you'd expect lighter. however, I understand its hard to get there with Disc + the heavier frameset.

At 8.34kg (as stated in the video), this does seem heavy for such a high spec bike. My 2018 (I think) Domane SLR6 weighs about 7.5kg, although it is the rim break version, which I went for because it was lighter and to save a bit of cash. I can't believe a disc brake setup is so much heavier!

I have an Emonda and yea, when you hit mile 80, on ok roads it beats you up. Just loose 2-3 pounds and your right back on track. Deff looking at this bike!

Good review. I have the 2018 version of this bike. It’s an ok bike. It never gets the credit it deserves. Rides like a champion. It’s great for long rides. For short rides I use my emonda. That’s my 2 cents.

After 2 years of owning a 2020 SL7 Domane, I absolutely love it despite it being a little heavy. I personally couldn't justify the large price jump to save 200 grams to get the SLR version, I opted to use that money for a lighter wheel set instead. When I get done riding, my legs might hurt but the rest of my body doesn't feel 'bludgeoned' like it used to when riding a race bike over lumpy Wisconsin roads

In 10 days I get my SLR7. Yes there are lighter bikes, less expensive ones, but few if any more comfortable for medium to longer journeys. Being on the wrong side of 70 I truly appreciate that.

Nice review. Almost 19lbs with no pedals!!! That’s concerning for a costly high end bike. Sounds like plush comfort can be heavy. I have an older gen Domane with Ultegra DI2 and it’s no where near 19lbs, right around 17lbs with pedals. But I have more conventional sized tires and Mavic wheels and rim brakes which are lighter than discs. This Domane could probably lose a few pounds with a different Project Build spec and still be fairly comfy but not as plush as this stock spec. Ride On!

Great videos man. Thank you for making them. You found a niche. No one is taking the time to put these bikes on a scale. It is appreciated. Is it possible that you not hold the scale ? It looks like the numbers keep changing on the screen of the digital scale.

I dont have another way to hold it. It does move around but we get to within a 1/10th. I retake my shots until what I say matches with what the scale finally settles on. Otherwise you would be sitting there watching the darn thing hunt for a while.

Trying to decide between this and the Émonda. I am a talented climber but I do end up getting uncomfortable when doing long rides on rough tarmac. I have a 2015 Trek one series rn

My trick is two different stem setups. I’ve got a 130mm 10-degree stem for my normal rides on a 2010 Felt F1 (very light rim-brake bike with very aggressive geometry.) I went with a flipped 100mm, 10-degree stem for the 207 mile Seattle to Portland ride. I tilted the bars up a bit too, which looks really geeky. So much more comfortable with the short, tall bars! But definitely faster when long and low. Like two bikes in one - and both weigh 16 lbs - with pedals. But the Domane would be nice too. With 38c tires, it would do gravel well. 28 or 30c tires for crummy, rural pavement. Discs for wet weather - plus mud-guards/fenders. Seems like a nice ride when the roads and weather aren’t ideal. The Emonda, like my F1, would be best on smooth, dry roads.

Nice review though. I am thinking about buying a second hand slr7 from 2020., The same as this one. The price is around 4500 $, in very nice condition. I was just wondering, since it is size 60 cm, and according to Trek, it's for riders that are 180-190, would it be small if I am 193 and long legs? Thanks 😊

interesting I have a 2017 SLR with dura ace di2 and 600oclv and weighs three pounds less. I spec'd out a domane SLR9 and it's still 2 lbs heavier than my 2017. Interesting how with better tech the weight can still be heavier overall.

Gorgeous bike. Too bad Trek puts the Di2 only on bikes that are 5K plus. The Roubaix gets it on their comp model for $4400 however not with carbon wheels. Can you review the Canyon Endurace?

@@kentlunski4421 a 6' rider? possibly. you should really get a bike fit or at a minimum try to ride the frame you would like. if you have never ridden a road bike before, this is a nice one to get as it has a relaxed geometry. but don't buy the bike at X size because you are X feet tall. it depends on flexibility and inseam and arm length and a whole bunch of other factors. good luck!

Hi James, just came back from the bike store where I ordered a Domane SL7. This bike also comes with the Aeolus 3V. The only thing is, I ordered Continental gp5000 tires with them in size 28mm. Do you think this gives problems, them being a bit smaller than the standard included 32mm? Thanks in advance.

"Worth it" is subjective, but my path was to buy a non-SLR model and reduce it's weight through lighter wheels, saddle, and various other parts. I use the stock wheel set for CX riding and the new wheel set for road.

I ordered the SRAM Force and it’s on order. This bike has the most tech in any road bike which makes it above the rest. Also made in the USA so you can’t go wrong there either. Was hoping to see a vid on the SRAM 12 speed but, I guess I’ll do my own review when I get it.

After many more miles and at higher speeds. I WAS WRONG. Trek got it right. I took it to my local shop and they refined the RETUL fit I had for a previous generation. The numbers were close, but there was a difference. The wider setup makes the bike feel even more grounded at sustained speeds. After many, many road bikes over the years, this is by far the best bike i've ever owned.

@@Jamesthebikeguy It's a cleaner design overall and it also puts the frame resilience where it's more effective for performance. I don't like the front shock(s). I think it's better to build some resilience in to the fork and then fine tune with tires. I actually think that the early Roubaix models (that Trek responded to with the Domane series) were better than the current model. But the current Domane beats them all for my standards.

I have ridden both the S-works Roubaix, and the SLR 7 Domane. I bought the Domane hands down. I’m 58, 6’5”, and 240lbs. I ride every day, and the Domane is just the most comfortable bike I’ve ridden. That said, it is NOT a road race bike in the conventional sense. You really feel the longer wheel base, slacker head tube, etc. If you like to suffer, and still enjoy a super twitchy front end, the the Domane is not for you. However, it is a bike that you can throw a leg over every day and hammer out some serious milage. The arthritis in my hands and wrists are much less affected, and the riding position is far easier on the lower back, all the while keeping 95% of the speed of a conventional road bike. Build quality is top shelf, but some of the first bikes had an annoying carbon fiber “creak” somewhere in the head tube area. Trek came up with a fix for it that seems to address it, but I don’t know if it’s a bad omen for what it might be doing 3 or 4 years down the line ? Time will tell. I’m not one of those guys that gets a new bike every year. I rode my LeMond Arivee titanium for 17 years before trading up !

This handles 38c tires, which means that you can take it off-road. Given that, the extra weight/robustness makes sense. This is no pure road racer.

I’ve ridden single track on 30c gravel tires (on a 22 lb. aluminum endurance bike.) It depends on the road and the rider. I also have a 16 lb. rim brake bike. It stays on the smooth stuff. Too delicate for gravel. At the limit of 38c tires, robustness makes sense. (Probably makes sense for the warranty department too.)

Yeah, totally different things. A sports car today weighs 50% more than what a sports car weighed in 1990. In both bike and the car's case thats because they have a lot "more" in them. The tech, shock absorption, frame storage, aero, ect all add weight but also make the bike faster and more efficient.

I have both and would not ride the Emonda 2019 over 40 miles. It’s a beautiful light bike and I love it but it will hurt if you A, don't have a athletes core strength and B, cannot touch your toes. The Domsne is heavy and comfortable and eats up long distance because you don't get as tired on the bike. The new emonda is DR2 only as well and I prefer to have cables mechanical on long rides away from a base.
