Dude, I bought a $500 entry level hardtail MTB just to ride around the city. I eventually took it to the mountains/trails and I loved it. I started tinkering with the hardtail, upgraded the fork, pedals, handlebars, stem, grips, bought a chain guide and then I decided to buy a dual suspension trail bike Trek Fuel ex 7. I took my entry level hardtail through some gnarly stuff though: some black and technical double black diamonds thinking, I'm going to ride it till the wheels fall off. It took all that abuse (Fuji Nevada 1.9). At that time, I still didn't believe in spending the types of $$ that these bikes cost nowadays... I'm keeping my hardtail for street riding. I love that I know how much abuse my hardtail will take and that I can ride crazy on the street if I so choose. I hit every jump that I come upon on the urban setting lol.

Going tubeless helps a ton by taking a lot of rotating mass out of the plus-sized wheels and also helps with grip and smoother vibes on small stuff like gravel. I have the same bike as Matty and I'm telling you that tubeless is almost as big a deal as the dropper post. The stock rims and tires with Trek store valves and Stan's sealant lose about 3-5 psi (18 front, 20 rear at 165 lbs.) if you top them off weekly in my experience. For trail, I drop the pressure to 16 front 18 rear. I commute and carry weight most of the time.

I have a Roscoe 8 and wanted a 29er as well as the 27.5 so I preordered the 2021 Marlin 7. It finally went to a one by drivetrain. Now a Deore 10 speed and I have a reverb dropper post all ready for it. It’ll be fun to have both. BTW. 2.6 tires on the front and 2.5 on the back is my jam. I use the Maxxis Aggressors.
@denismacfarlane2554 жыл бұрын
Do yourself a favor and ditch the reverb unless its the latest gen. I’m a service manager and I get so many calls to bleed and service that post. My sales manager had one, he got fed up and bought a Fox. Even a tranz x or brand x is far more reliable and all around better post than reverb at a fraction of the price.
@SaltyMaud4 жыл бұрын
Got the idea that i could probably replace many of my shorter car rides with a bicycle - started looking into road bikes. Realized i live right next to a good network of gravel forest paths, and there are some semi-serious trails locally accessible too - started veering towards mountain bikes. Dialed back to Marlin 6 because it should still be relatively decent for casual riding while making trails at least traversable, without breaking the bank. Further rationalized it so that _if_ i get more interested in the offroad side of things, it should be a decent frame to bolt upgrades on, and if i just end up riding pavement and gravel mostly, it'll be perfect for that as it is... Or if i get _really_ interested in this stuff, i can keep it as my daily bicycle and get a dedicated trail bike for that kind of stuff.

You can do lots of things with the marlin 6 with low money to make it more fun. First the seat (WTB is a good brand), footpegs with pins, change that long Stem (Tee) and put a very short one, the bike is gonna change drastically because is gonna be very nimble and fun to ride... I mean, why they put those long stems, they are destroying the fun, you can add a handlebar with a little rising If you want even further fun... you can save for a dropper, then a better transmition, brakes. Burn the tires having fun until making more changes, you can even put a Rockshok later and got a great hardtail for fun. You got a nice frame to do what you like.

I was in the same predicament as you where. I brought a hybrid bike thinking I was going to ride mostly in the neighborhood and a little bit in the trails. Little did I know how much I liked trail riding more. I brought an Trek Excalibur 8 still thinking I was mostly rinding in the streets and less in the trails( the hybrids are really not good for mountain biking) that why I got the Excalibur 8. But I am not crazy about the 29 in tires maybe I am not used to them or something. I like the smaller tires better seems like the bike more nimble. In the near future I am looking to buy a Farley or a Roscoe. If I had to do it all over again I would find a shop that rents mountain bike and paid to use them a see which type of riding I like better and research the bike I like best. Good job on the videos I will keep watching

I’m much older than you and am jealous that you could advance and upgrade so quickly but I still appreciate this video. I’m enjoying my Marlin 7 for more XC style riding where I can get some speed but not lose grip on loose gravel. I think it wasn’t enough for trails though and I’m of the age where I don’t heal nearly as quick so when I crashed on a rock garden in the woods it really got in my head. I think Trek has been hearing similar things from Marlin 7 riders, prompting them to upgrade it to a 1x10 with a better fork so that it’s almost like an entry level X Caliber - but it’s still a 29er so it will always be a different beast than a Roscoe. I’d love to rent a Roscoe 8 for a day and see what I’m missing and if I can make some upgrades to my Marlin 7 so that I can have the best of both worlds and get a little more adventuresome on my rides because I’m getting kinda bored doing the whole “on your left” thing on MUPs.

I got a 7 and hit all kinds of trails, not black diamonds or nothing too crazy. But download the app "Alltrails" and check around your area. Do the intermediate ones till you get better, because like you said those greenways get boring and crowded. Just get some knee pads, gloves and a helmet.

I still have my 2020 Marlin 6. I agree it's very fast; would be great as a commuter. And it can handle basic, relatively flat single tracks easy. I've only upgraded the pedals; I don't want to put any more $ into it b/c I want to ride more aggressive trails and even street (drops, etc). And at 5'10" a 29er feels way too big for me. I want to upgrade to a bike with 27.5's, dropper post, more travel, a 1x drivetrain. But once you start looking at nice hardtails, it's hard not to look at dual suspension bikes in the $2,000 range.

Some beautiful sky lines !! have to disagree with you regarding the Marlin but likely its just your 29ers. I have a 2019 Trek Marlin 6 which has a 3 x 8 drive train (24 speed) with 27.5's and its a dog on pavement/asphalt. I bought it for trail riding but will use it on rail to trails and around town a bit and often feel like I'm fighting myself as a result of the beefy Bontragers (27.5 x 2.20). Excellent for a trail riding - I take it on moderate rated trails but wouldnt trust it on expert trails. I'm currently looking for a FS bike as the Marlin is holding back my riding and likely will be a YT Jeffsy. Keep on pedaling.

Does the Roscoe have the same gear range as the marlin / does it make an ok enough commuter as well?

Would you say that the marlin 6 is an easy bike to pedal kind of like a road bike where you get a lot of distance per pedal?
