This week we do a head-to-head comparison of the WeatherTech and Smartliner Floor Liners for the 2021 & 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe (Trim Levels of SE, SEL, Limited and Calligraphy).
After our release of the WeatherTech install episode, we came across a post by a member of the FB group 4th Generation Hyundai Santa Fe owners where a member was asking for recommendations of all weather floor liners. A number of owners recommended Smartliner. It was our first time hearing about them and with the high number of votes for them, we had to buy a set for comparison to see if they were really that much better than WeatherTech. In this episode we do a side by side on the differences, what makes each one better than the other and how they fit compared to one another. Plus what our final vote is on them.

Personally the Smart Liner looks to be a better product in the all around comparison. Honestly, WeatherTech has been in the game long enough they shouldn't get a pass on the minor things. Thanks for the video.

Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts. We greatly appreciate it. Yes, WT has been around for quite a while for sure. With this review, if we could have returned the WT, we would have just for the cost savings but once they are used, they no longer just take regular returns. Lessons for next time. LOL. Cheers!

Both the liners stop before the gas pedal because Hyundai has that ‘upside down’ gas pedal in all their cars. The liners go all the way under the gas pedal on most other cars. For those who haven’t been in a Hyundai, the gas pedal hinges on the floor of the footwell instead of descending and articulating from the top of your footwell.

Hi Tom, thanks for watching and noting this! Yes, the Santa Fe does have a floor-mounted gas pedal which is unlike other SUVs on the market today. The floor liners stopping well before the gas pedal is indeed a safety feature so that the liner does not ever interfere with the pedal operation. We did find that Lasfit floor liners neatly fit around the factory safety buffer and allow for better protection; check out our other video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZnbKZHSir8hqgtEsi=7OWKc5wq4lGihOjU Take care and stay safe!

This was a great comparison video. I have Smartliner mats in a 2019 Ford F150 that I originally purchased for a 2016 F150 (back when they were Maxliner) and they retained their shapes and were in such good condition when I bought the 2019 that I moved them on to the new truck and they remain in use to this day. The Smartliners still look and perform like new. The "extra moulding elements" that "aren't needed" (13:12) are actually there for long-term form retention (think corrugated metal as opposed to flat sheet for added longitudinal rigidity) and are quite beneficial. As an aside, the left foot "rest mat" to which you referred (6:10) is called a 'dead pedal." Carry on!

I'm betting the extra molded in portions on the edges of the front liners is to add rigidity to the sides. Which I have seen edge rolling issues on Weather Tech after some time. Great review. Thank you for helping my decision.

Thanks very much for this review. It was very helpful. Considering the “laser measured” feature I’m kind of disappointed in the fitment on both products. Seems to me they should,fit better. I have no idea how these folks do the measurement. Smart liner seems better overall and the price is certainly a consideration. I’m also considering the step-down product from weather tech that makes them easier to pull out. We use carpet in the summer and the heavy duty plastic/rubber type in our 2013 Sonata. They were great. By the way we just took delivery of our calligraphy late January. Ours did NOT come with carpet floor mats! And, we were told that’d be the case.

Hi Rick. Thanks for watching and sharing the kind words as well as your thoughts. We greatly appreciate it. We too are amazed that with the "3D" scanning that they are not better fitting. Thats crazy yours didn't come with carpet mats. Ours did so that should be something to push for through the dealer. Likely the extra molding on the smartliner is to add rigidity along the edges. I went with smartliner in my f250 because weathertech wants $250 for their mats and smartliner is priced at $140. I was a little blown away by weather techs price. I have weather tech in 2 other vehicles and don’t remember paying that much… Looks like weather tech has some competition now, good they’re getting a lottle too big for their britches anyway
@SpiritedWrenchers
@SpiritedWrenchers 4 ай бұрын
HI David. Thanks for watching and sharing. We appreciate it. I laughed way too hard at the Britches line. LOL. We're thinking the same thing on the rigidity. Wow, that's pretty crazy for the Weathertech mats price. No way I would pay that with the solid competitors that are out there now. Between Smartliner and Husky and LasFit (if they carry them), all 3 are great and no need for us to ever go back to Weathertech for our vehicles. Hope you're able to pick up something that works for a great price. If you look at LasFit, you can use the code "wrenchers10" for 10% off the price. We love them in our Santa Fe. I'd put them in our 4runner if they made them for my year. Stay safe out there!

Those raised area's in the driver's liner are for strength and to prevent deformity over time. Weather tech are one of the worst for this issue especially if you live in the south like we do. They definitely don't hold the shape in the heat on the vertical walls of the liners.

I got the smartliner for my 2001 Silverado. Fit was good. What surprises me about these liners is how thin they are. I thought they would be thicker like the factory rubber mats in my mazda SUV.
@SpiritedWrenchers
@SpiritedWrenchers Жыл бұрын
Hi dafish. Thank you for watching and sharing your experience. We greatly appreciate that. Yes, these liners are certainly thinner than your typical rubber OEM mats. They tend to break down in a different way with abrasives like sand rocks so they don't have to be as thick. I know my OEM rubber mats from Subaru are already wearing down compared to my Husky liners that have been abused with offroading in our 4Runner but still hanging in there. Stay safe out there in your Silverado!

Hi Mark, thanks for watching and enjoying our channel! Our understanding is that the 2023 Santa Fe did not change much from the 2022, and the floor layout is the same. Since it's not a reface or remodel year, these should fit the 2023, but we can't make promises since we don't have access to a '23 to test it out.

Hi Trump8ster, thanks for watching, sharing the kind words and asking. We greatly appreciate it. I did look at the OEM mats and there are a couple of points that kept me away. 1: The price $300+. 2: Not a fan of the styling due to being less effective with collecting water, mud, etc and the honeycomb could be tougher to keep clean. I'm sure they fit better in the areas that we called out though. Hope you follow the channel for more episodes. Cheers!

First time watching this- several year user of WT. Has anyone ever tried a heat gun or something to mold the liner to fit tighter? I'd bet that the outside edge gaps shown here are more of the plastic relaxing vs a laser scanning issue.

Hi Star Gazer, thank you for watching and noting this. At first, this is what I thought we would need to do, but we instead followed instructions outlined to us by WeatherTech via email. Without their approval, I would be leery so as not to void the warranty on the liners. My personal favorite in this head to head was the WeatherTech over the Smart Liners. After this video, we discovered Lasfit floor liners and have actually had them in our Santa Fe for over a year now. Here's the link to that video as well, in case you are interested: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gXOWpKuQaa-csMksi=DVFsoLBS3pncBL3- Hope this helps! Take care, stay safe, and watch out for messes!

I notice that smart liner is definitely closer to the gas pedal on the left side of it, than the weather tech that gives it a lot of space, do you think where the smart liner lies can cause a safety issue because it’s so close to the gas pedal? Great video btw! Definitely helpful!
@SpiritedWrenchers
@SpiritedWrenchers 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Forrest Gold, thanks for watching! Yes, I noticed the same thing and have the exact same concern. Given the number of people who have the smart liners, I don't think it is a major issue (otherwise the online reviews would show it) but it was definitely something that I didn't want to mess with. I do find that it takes extra cleaning in the carpet around the gas pedal with the WeatherTech liners, something I don't mind doing in the name of a good romp on the gas pedal. Hope these details help... Take care and stay safe!

@@SpiritedWrenchers these details are great thank you! I noticed why now weather tech doesn’t keep them so close to the pedal. Thank you for responding and for the video, stay safe.

Your staggering startup and long winded explanation within two minutes of startup, had me hit the dislike button and move On.d A friend told me to give it a longer try. Not everyone is appreciative of talk that means nothing. Therefore, finally at 4 minutes starts the info needed. Was the hump in the rear the same for the weathertech before it molded to the vehicle's hump for a few weeks? Not true apple to apple. Overall, ok and it was helpful.

Hi Douglas. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts and to your friend for the suggestion. Although you disliked the video, your view and comment helps the channel overall and for that to, we appreciate you. Our dialogue helps paint a picture at times when we feel it could be helpful to some. We recognize that some have shorter attention spans and it may not be helpful for them and that's ok. Some of our videos aren't that way. Ultimately we want to stay real with ourselves while providing the most amount of info when it comes to a product review especially for those that see these as a pricey/larger purchase. In the end, we're glad that it was somewhat helpful to you. With all the time we spend on making these, being helpful, is the ultimate goal for us. To answer your question, the hump was pretty significant because that's where it was bent for shipping. It took a little while for it to settle and fit to the body. Stay safe out there!
