I just sold my 997.2 GT3 RS and bought a pristine 2.5 Boxster. Why ? In a world filled with other road users, police, etc., taking out the GT3 was a perpetual exercise in discipline and self control. I yearned for a simpler, less powerful, momentum car, that I can drive with abandon in the modern era. Yup, these early 986 are my driving nirvana. ❤

Great review. I have 01 S. Its 100 percent track car with rear wing and front aero. Performs like a GT4. But when I got it 7 months ago in stock form, I felt like it was the funnest car I ever drove. The original was a naturally aspirated 6cylinder may not have had double the “power” but that turbo 4cyl does not have the torque of the flat 6 which lives high revs and is very lightweight on its feet with almost perfect weight distribution and CLASSIC styling! The gears are close enough with perfect tuning from Porsche that makes any driver smile from ear to ear! Some times it’s not all about numbers or power but class, character n experience and that’s what the 986 delivers!

I think I have watched this video at least 4 times over the past year and enjoyed it every time. I am the original owner of a 2002 Boxster S - Arctic Silver/Boxster Red. Every time I think about selling it to buy a new one I think of all of the things you have said in this video about the purity of the design and driving experience. Mine even has the better 3 spoke steering and PSM to save me. LOL. Its a little more tempting these days as the selling prices have gone way way up but even so I don't think I could part with it. Thanks for all of the great videos about the brand that you create.

I loved your comment about how Porsche has stayed true to the original Boxster’s DNA with each subsequent generation. I had a 987.1 S and now have a 981 S. And while the 981 is larger and has electric rather than hydraulic steering, it still FEELS like a Boxster! Can’t say that about many other sports car makers.

What a great video and fun contrast, two Boxsters separated by 25 years. To my eye, Porsche has certainly stayed true to the Boxster's origins. To my ear, the 986 sounded a good bit more sporty. Nice video, always a treat to hear Nathan's thoughts and insight. Agreed that the 986 holds up quite well over the years. I would have liked to see a more fair comparison, perhaps a 1997 986 versus a base 981 or 718, and then compare the new GTS 4.0 against a 2004 550 SE Boxster.

One of the best films to watch and listen to regarding the 986 .... 'purist expression' .... such a key statement and it takes the years to roll by to earn such favour. It is a retrospectively gorgeous car and I am so happy with my 2003 'S'. Also with Porsche still developing the car after 25 solid years is a testament to how good the concept is or always was. They are probably kicking themselves that they didn't keep going from the original 550 and 718 as they did with the 356 and the 911.

Obviously, the old cars cannot compete on fit & finish and outright performance. BUT! The one thing I can say for sure is that the 986 offers a bit more tactile feel than the new cars. Great review! 25 years is a lot of time and is only logical that cars get quicker year by year. But in the end is speed what makes a car great? Remember that old 911 are some of the most desirable cars out there, and still some of them are slower than an old 986. My 2000 boxster base model is for the track, for a daily driver I use my 1980 MGB. The boxster is so stiff and hard I feel every bump in the road. Some one suggested that I need to get a model with the active suspension control to smooth out the bumps, any experience with that? I also heard that the 2010 had its own doors as opposed to the 911 doors they had been using and also gave that generation a little more leg room and no IMS barring and they also introduced the PDK transmission in that generation. Sounds like the second generation might be, the extra sweet spot.

987 with Porsche Active Suspension Management (active dampers) will offer better ride or stiffer damping depending on which mode you're in. 986 did not have PASM, and there's only one setting with analog shocks, which Porsche tuned for a mix of sporty handling and comfortable ride, erring on the sporty side. For some the 986's stock suspension may be too stiff, for others it may not be stiff enough. 2010 model year 987 doors are nearly identical to 1997-2004 986 doors (with the exception of the aluminum ones on the Spyder/Cayman R).

The Ultimate History of Porsche (Gallagher/Smith) pg 132 (specs 204hp). Porsche trademarked both Boxer & Speedster (pg 131) and used the amalgamation of both to name the Boxster. Roadster had nothing to do with it. Why on Earth would Porsche use roadster when everyone else did (Mazda) when they owned Speedster? Your argument is wrong, inaccurate and misleading. The whole idea and styling of the Boxster is a tipping of the hat to the original Speedster (550 Spyder). NB Sturt Gallagher is a former editor of GT Purely Porsche.

The design changed A LOT from concept to production. It grew more than a foot, it lost the defined air intakes, the headlight shape changed, the interior is completely different, almost every detail was changed and only the basic soap bar shape was retained, but that was inspired by the 550, not original to the concept. I believe wt dist on the 986 is 45F/55R. Steering feel was lost by the electronic assist more than anything else.

the 25 year Anniversary edition, fair or not people seem to prize "limited" editions (albeit some of them aren't really that limited!). The Anniversary car is a GTS 4.0 so mechanically they will be the same.

In my opinion, if you’re choosing a car (any car) based on which one MAY appreciate more in the future, then you’re buying it for the wrong reason. Buy the one that will give you the most PSYCHIC rewards - today and tomorrow.

Is the red dash light in the 986 a Seat Belt or Convertible Top not all the way down?
@nathanmerz3 жыл бұрын
The owner of the car was apologetic as the airbag light came on during the video, was diagnosed as a bad seat belt buckle. Good eye!

Great comparison! You have to love the simplicity, and classyness of the 986. The new one is way better performance-wise, but all that carbon fiber looking trim, and electronic bling kills it for me (as does the price tag)! That said, I sold my 2000 996, and was glad the IMS didn't let go in the 10 years or so I owned it! Would hate to go down that rabbit hole in a 986.

Let's be honest, the electric steering of the current Porsches have absolutely no feedback. Bring back the type 986 hydrauic assisr steering, which was the best there ever was!

The allusion to the notion that had the boxster come on the scene earlier, the 911 might have been lost to the model line. The 911 became a bloated GT car while the boxster, with its mid engine is the true evocation of the marques sporting heritage.
@tome90093 жыл бұрын
Totally agree with your observations. Of course, there will always be some people who are enamored with owning a 911, but folks who are more interested in driving the best Porsche sports car will be driving a Boxster or Cayman.

According to the Ultimate History of Porsche, the name is an amalgam of Boxer and Speedster. Not Roadster. And it's 204HP, not 201.

Those cars have never been under $40000.. Back in the nineties when that car 1st came out a fully speck loaded boxer would cost you a close to 60000. I don't know where you got your numbers from but they're not accurate . Because I remember seeing them for sale on the dealership floor

Once the Boxster hits the 30yr Antique mark, where will prices go? Current best bang for the $ in a used Porsche. Enough current technology but affordable for $15k and under. To bad they are now showing another defect in engines, the timing chain guides and tensioners failing causing detonation! Add that to the IMS fear in people it just sucks Porsche can't build an original long lasting reliable car. Even the current GT3'S having issues with cooling. Every model ever made has needed updating to make them more reliable. Not built like a Honda Toyota or Infiniti. Example, you buy a Boxster S, 2003 with 65k miles, you think wow, fast, handles superb all I need is $ set aside for normal wear and tear like brakes, alternator, water pump, battery, thermostat, things like that. Now you have in top if that, power steering reservoirs that melt n leak, the chains guides, alternator, chain tensioners, IMS bearing, a coolant expansion tank reservoir which are expensive to replace when they break n leak. You don't worry about stuff like that in other sports cars. Ridiculous they can't build one good car. But if you want a Porsche, you have to be willing to spend the money to make it more reliable and to enjoy longer.

When driving a convertible, please put the side windows down! I own a 1998 Guards red, tan interior Boxster. Thanks.

Side windows were kept up to help keep the lapel microphones from picking up wind noise.
@davidkellogg91763 жыл бұрын
If the side windows had been down, along with road noise that would have disturbed the audio track, if not making it wholly inaudible, and the camera would have been subjected to considerable wind buffeting, diminishing video quality. And the unusual feeling of intimacy that characterizes the Boxster cabin would also have been lost. I love the feel of the car with the windows up, And with the windows down. Despite being very tall, I've always been a coupe guy. My wife, also north of 6 feet, has taught me the virtues of top-down driving. I like the Cayman tremendously: it's a Brilliant road and track car, but we both Love our Boxster. It's akin to the difference between the Rolls Royce Owner's Club and the Bentley Drivers Club. Cayman and Boxster both beg to be driven; for us, the wind-in-the-hair dimension and the contrast between the intimate cabin and unlimited headroom make the Boxster our ride of choice. The Cayman makes me feel like a better, more competent and competitive driver. The Boxster makes me feel more fully human. While neither leaves me wanting, I know which one I will take...

@@davidkellogg9176 Wow Dave, you wrote a long comment. Do you own a Rolls Royce and a Bentley, or are you just name dropping? I made some experimental videos in my Boxster using a GoPro Hero 7. My Wife and I can be heard talking just fine, no problem. The side windows up on a convertible is like saying "I bought a convertible, but the wind bothers me". My motorcycles don't have side windows. Sorry, I'm laughing while writing this. All in good fun. Thanks for commenting. I'll upload some of the Boxster video on my channel soon. 👍😀

I drive with the top down and the windows up all the time. Aside from being none of your concern what someone else does in their car, The 986 has phenomenal air flow with the windows up when the top is down. You can talk to the passenger in a normal voice, listen to the radio, talk on speaker phone, and even drive with the top down on really cold days. In my 986 the top is rarely up and the windows are rarely down.

I never got the appeal of the 986. Taste aside, there's a reason they depreciated hard. With the 4th gen / 718 4.0 (with aftermarket exhaust) they finally nailed the concept.

What a bore! And the comparison doesn't hold for a second, between a 25 years old model without personality, without power and a fabulous machine of power, reactivity and balance. What a boring waste of time. The 718 Gts 4.0 is fabulous!
