Perez HAD PACE. Can we stop being so biased against the guy...literally when Checo was pushing, he was actually pulling away from Hamilton. The commentators even mentioned this a couple of times, like right after the safety car in the Stroll incident. Not to mention, this is the 6th race in a new car...he's been doing better than the other second RedBull drivers at this stage.

Matt has some weird anti-Perez vibes going on, even when he does well he's always focusing on the negative. Perez could've been ahead of Verstappen if it wasn't for the 4.5 second pitstop.

When Perez wins, he's still shit apparently. Was holding Hamilton off for half the race not good enough? Was ending up in front of Max without his pitstop problem not good enough? Guy managed to do what Albon and Gasly couldn't (before halfway through the season no less) and it's still not good enough? Maybe he should cure cancer just so he gets SOME respect around here.

@@k1ngcab00se I don't think so actually looking at the time deltas but it would have been close. He'd be 2 seconds closer with a 2.3s pit stop (he had 4.3 I believe) and Verstappen was 2.5 up the road or something. So he'd have needed a 1.8 or something ridiculous. And then still, Max would have the overspeed and warm tyres. I think it would have been very close but Perez probably wouldn't have divebombed into turn 2 trying to keep it or something on those cold tyres and Max would have kept it. Still takes nothing away from your point about his great pace.

I’d have given Vettel an A* for the P4 alone, he got that purely on merit with a great drive and a great strategy. That he came 2nd because Of Verstappen and Hamilton dropping off and could’ve won if Perez had cut out a corner earlier is just gravy. He will never have Lawrence Stroll in his pocket but he could easily have the team behind him like Checo did. So happy to see happy Vettel

True as fuck and he deserves it. People have talked shit about Seb and how he's only good in a good car. He's a good driver period. When you watch his onboard during the race, you can tell when he switches all of his driving skill on and off. Engineer tells him let it out and that's what he does, then he keeps good pace and comes P2 in an "average" F1 car (which it kinda is). Sebastian Vettel deserves his place in history.

@@CR-iu2zt tbf, Leclerc is just different gravy in extracting 100% of the car in qualy. You could see that last year, the Ferrari had no business qualifying so high up and so often. Vettel wasn't so far off him most of the time either in 2019. If Ferrari wasn't Ferrari, 2019 might've been a great year for them, both Leclerc and Vettel looked capable to take the fight to Mercedes, but they collectively bottled so many races and points, let alone the questions about the engine performance.

I know this is a bit too late but, hear me out: everyone was so harsh with Perez in the last 5 races. But himself said that he needed at least 5 races to get up to speed. For example, in Spain he said he had a shoulder issue but they still trashed him that race. In Monaco he did a super drive, managing the tyres for executing the strategy. But no one's talking about that in that weekend his family was under danger, and one of his security guys was injuried severely by a burglar. Still he kept his head down and scored the points. Today the win wasn't just "given" to him, he worked out for it. He overtook all the drivers he should, he had the same pace as Max, and kept Lewis behind for the whole race lol. He managed to avoid him in the restart, and secure the win despite the engine. You really have to appreciate what this más is doing in his seat. For sure this doesn't secure the seat for next season, but if he continues like this there's no reason to sack him out of the team. Just my opinion 😁

No one is saying Perez didn’t deserve to win, they are just saying Verstappen deserved it as well (probably more). Max was just matching the pace of the people behind him, but could have gone faster, he didn’t make a single mistake all race. Both Red Bulls had an amazing race and did everything right. They really deserved that 1-2 podium in Baku. They were both fast and had some great overtakes, especially Perez. I strongly oppose the passive-aggressive treatment of Checo regarding how the race win was "given to him". Anyone who had seen the race keenly would tell you that the in-lap that he had before his pit stop was something else. After that, the way he held off Hamilton for half the race even though the latter got the DRS frequently and had a faster car on the straights was outstanding. He won the race because he deserved to. Period.

I mean it was certainly not undeserved as he had excellent pace and held off Hamilton. But you can understand the "given" sentiment as obviously he would have finished behind Verstappen (and Hamilton kind off had him at the start by the way). Given that he is the 2nd RB seat driver he is deserving of an A*. Challenge yourself in this way: If Max had been outqualified by Checo, and was cruising in 2nd behind him, and then inherits a win because Perez' tyre blows up, would you have seen it as completely on his own merit?
@Formula1bliz
@Formula1bliz 3 жыл бұрын
It wasn’t given to him since he did have to be in second to be able to pick up the pieces. But you can’t deny that Verstappen deserved to win this and would have won this if it wasn’t for his tyre exploding. Verstappen had better pace while was not pushing at all, he just tried to match the pace of the cars behind. Happy for Checo though, this is why Red Bull hired him

@@lostalone9320 I think you're right. Drivers thrive on winning and being the best at what they do. Bottas has the misfortune of being teammates with a 7-time world champion who is just a better driver 9/10 times. With the growing pressure and talk around the "Russell to Mercedes" move, Bottas' never-ending bad luck, and littl things like Toto calling Monac "Bottas' mistake" while simultaneously calling Baku "absolutely not Lewis' mistake", I think Valtteri is just losing hope and motivation. Baku overall is just a better Singapore with a actual straight which is exciting. Mercedes looked really weak on the straights. Can we talk about how Mercedes threw Bottas under the bus, by keeping him with the high wing setup, that Mercedes had no pace with on friday, but then with Lewis they put on the Low wing set up and it clearly worked. imo Bottas lack of pace was more the car and the set up. Cause i think we have discovered a legit weakness of the car, which is slow corners. Which is a mixture of their long wheelbase and the low rake concept. Sure Bottas could have been better not denying that, but Mercedes did him no favors with the set up.

I totally agree with Katy that somehow the environment within Mercedes has changed. On this, here's my 2 cents. I think, to Toto, the constructors championship has always been the priority and this is the first time since 2014 that it has dawned upon him that Mercs might not win the constructors. His top rival team has a future dominant WDC and one of THE most consistent F1 drivers I have ever seen in their lineup, whereas Mercs now have effectively only 1 driver performing on race days. This could be the source of all the little mistakes and frustration coming to the surface. I hate being 16 hours late to the podcast! But what can you do... Workday!!

To Matt, and those who harp on Bottas for this race: Bottas towed literally everyone behind him in quali. Both Mercs struggled hard in practice so we know the car wasn't good. Hamilton only got a good quali because Bottas towed him all the way around. Bottas had to create his own tow, and when he finally got it and was on a good quali lap Yuki and Sainz cause a red flag. The Mercs have struggled with tyre warm-up the whole season and at Baku it was not different. Bottas was in second place in Monaco, where the car had the same problems and DNFd because of a Merc mistake, not his own. Compare to Ham who made a mistake here and lost on his own. Ignoring all of these facts and just blame Bottas just makes you look shallow minded and unknowledgeable. It also makes the biases you have for certain drivers stand out like a sore thumb. Not to mention, HAMILTON actually got PASSED in MONACO. Getting passed in Baku on one of the longest straights with a DRS zone with a car that can't warm up its tyres? Not much you can do there. I'm not saying Bottas drove well, but there is a lot of unfair criticism towards him, and for people who are hardcore F1 fans and supposed to be "knowledgeable" it sometimes seem like you bash drivers, just because you want to. I wouldn't mind you criticizing Bottas if you at least managed to realize why he was down there in the first place.

There should not be 2 fixed pitstops, tyre management will go out of the window, which is a very important part of Sunday.
