I agree with Katy saying there needs to be a fixed set of stewards including an ex-driver, and interestingly enough she mentioned Alexander Wurz, who is the Co-commentator for the Austrian ORF (which is a blessing for us Austrians really!) and he, during this race, commented that he was a member of the steward-council twice a few years ago and he would never do it again because the other stewards never listened to him although he was the only one who knows situations like this from inside the car. It is quite telling how someone like him who seems to be fairly diplomatic could not stand being a steward, not because the decisions were difficult, but because the other stewards didn't listen to and respected him and his perspective as a former driver

The comparison is not a good one because Alonso never put his car in position to driven off the track, Perez vs Lando was a poor decision by Perez because he should know that McLaren has better power coming out of the turn and Perez could never complete the pass on the outside. If Perez would slowed and gone to the inside like Charles did him later in the race he would have cleanly passed Lando. Alonso knew he had developed the position and the power to come ahead out of the turn ahead. I feel the same way about LeClerc’s first tangle with Perez because RB has the power to close the door on the Ferrari coming out of turn 4 - bad move by Charles putting his car on the outside.

@@mattbilello6229 You've missed the point. By Russell and Alonso being more respectful in their racing and knowing when to leave space, back out of a move etc., it lead to an extended, exciting battle rather than it ending immediately due to a collision or someone being forced off track. I don't believe he is comparing the exact scenarios that played out during the race.

For the yellow flags, i really like the code 60 rule at NBR. It's very clear, well defined. You slow down before the yellow, maintain speed for the yellow sector (have to engage pit limiter), and floor it at the first green flag. All the battles (and all gaps) are preserved. Maybe F1 could use some adaptation of that

I seem to be in the minority because I thought the lando - Perez - Leclerc penalties were justified and correct. My view is what alonso said on the radio a few years ago “you must always leave a space”. If someone’s alongside you have to give them room which neither Lando or ironically Perez later did. You can’t just leave them no room, forcing them off the track and not expect a penalty.

this race was very wierd. it has always been clear you can take the racing line if you're ahead and push the driver off if there's a runoff area, but absolutely can't do that when there's a gravel trap, grass or a wall. i also think perez should have gotten a higher penalty for the first incident with leclerc because leclerc was clearly ahead. a lot of younger drivers in the midfield doing this to each other is the problem. if lando pushes hamilton off the track, can you imagine the backlash? midfield needs world champions for others to learn fair racing.

@albertwarren6917 3 жыл бұрын
@@mclarenF1race I think the rules need to state and list what actions count as a minor penalty and what counts as a major penalty and the corresponding penalty for each action. Then the stewards job is to determine whether the drivers broke a rule, what rule they broke, whether the action was minor or major depending on the circumstances and hand out the penalty written in the rule book. This should improve consistency in decisions made by the stewards which is what I want to see most by the stewards. If the penalties seem unfair for the actions then they can always be adjusted later on. Also there’s a difference between being squeezed and being pushed off. I think it was Gasly and Perez approaching Eau Rouge a few years ago and one of them was squeezed very tightly next to the wall. That’s squeezing which is allowed. They gave just enough space. But what Norris and Perez did in the race was pushing others off the track. I agree drivers should think about being squeezed but they shouldn’t have to think about being pushed off. Perez and Leclerc had nowhere to go other than the gravel when they were pushed off. If they were squeezed they would have been able to have all 4 tyres on the track still but very close to the gravel.

Penalty points I feel should have two categories major and minor, majors hit your license and three minor hit your license. Minor would be track limit and what happened to Gasly starting slightly off and pit lane crossing, and major being speeding through yellow and causing a crash. I feel that will make it where you still get penalized for mistakes but they aren’t severe enough to where you might get banned unless you do it multiple times.

I think that this was the best day this season for the stewards. After some F-ups in some of the previous races, and even in saturday (Vettel), they appareantly decided to be as sharp as a knife and be absolutely on it. Every penalty was correctly applied according to the rules. If they were to allow running people off the track, you'll get no overtake at all because the risk will heavily outweigh the benefits. The penalty points need some review though. I'd say keep penalizing everything according to the rules, but be carefull with the penalty points. Only serious infractions should give penalty points.

@@ml8022 race control =/= race stewards Masi doesn't give penalties. This race exposed the hypocrisy of people who posts that meme from Alonson: "all the time you have to leave a space" but now are complaining about the penalties in situations that nobody didnt leave a space. All the penalties were deserved, Lando ruined Perez race and Perez ruined Lecrecs race twice, period.
@John-ok8ts
@John-ok8ts 3 жыл бұрын
Alonso was wrong at the time and knows it. He even joked with Vettel about it at a later race. The space rule only applies when returning to the racing the line from a defensive line. This isn't the case here. Lando is on the inside at the apex and therefore on the racing line.
@victorcolacios2802
@victorcolacios2802 3 жыл бұрын
@@John-ok8ts No, what happened was: - Monza 2011, Vettel was about to overtake Alonso and he, Alonso, squished Vettel almost off the track. - Bahrein 2012, Roseberg forced Alonso off the track then Alonso complained, at the post race interview Vettel puts Alonso in a awkward situation joking about "leave a space" because Alonso didint leave a space in Monza 2011. Based on what you said, the defensive driver just need to be at the apex so he can force the other driver off the track 100% of the times, which means we will never see a overtake in the turns, only in the straights which is non sense.
@John-ok8ts
@John-ok8ts 3 жыл бұрын
@@victorcolacios2802 That's exactly what the defensive driver needs to do and you see it all the time. If you can't make it to the apex ahead then you have no rights. This also applies on the inside. You can't hit the side of the car on the outside if you are coming from behind. If you are ahead and on the inside and they turn into you it's then their fault. The rules aren't as complicated as people make them out to be. F1 has never been easy to overtake around the outside in the corners. That's why it's such a great thing when it does happen and why it was really shitty of Hamilton when he took Albon out but that just shows it's still possible however it's the highest risk move a driver can make. As for the Alonso incident. Yea sorry I got the two races mixed up in terms of time but the point is the same. Drivers are hypocrites when talking about themselves. It's part of the sport.

@@victorcolacios2802 You aren't quite getting it. Lando as a result of being on the inside is not on a defending line. The question then becomes should Lando have to over slow his car and move of the racing line to give him space. Why should he when he's ahead or at the very least level?

@@theglitch312 Yeah, but you have to remember a couple of things. It's the teams complaining that usually gets the race director to send an investigation to the Stewards. This almost certainly was the case here. It seemed strange that it took so long for the notice to come up for Lando's investigation (it didn't happen until lap 13) so I went back today and looked for a reason why. It came about a lap after Lando and his race engineer had the chatter about his left tire being over worked and Lewis being too quick. Red Bull knew Lewis was going to get by pretty soon so Lando wasn't any use to them any more so complained and it was sent to the Stewards.

When Max overtook Hamilton on the outside of turn 4 in bahrein it was considered illegal. If there was gravel on the outside of that corner the stewards would say Hamilton pushed him off. Yesterday if there was a run off at turn 4 and Perez overtook Norris, the stewards would probably say it was an illegal overtake. The run off being gravel or asphalt should NOT impact the rules. If the driver in front has the racing line, the driver at the back needs to back off. If it ends up in the gravel that’s his fault Edit: I’m not saying Max’s overtake was legal or that Norris didn’t force Perez off the track. I’m saying penalties have to be consistent independently of the run off. Penalize offense not consequence.

With all due respect, that's a bit like saying that there should be no difference in how you play field hockey and ice hockey, because it's basically the same game and the surface on which it's played shouldn't matter. It's not like drivers aren't acutely aware of the kind of surface on the runoff of a corner, and it's perfectly reasonable to expect them to treat each other differently because of it.

Verstappen went wide after a snap of oversteer but if he had been able to just drive the line he wanted without the oversteer, he would have been able to complete the move without leaving the track. For Perez, that was not even an option, as his possibility to overtake was taken from him by Lando forcing him off track.

Something to think about with Danny Ric. The first four races, he out-qualified Lando 3-1 and, in the races scored 2 P6s, a P7 and a P9. Then Lando's long term contract extension was announced. Since then, Daniel hasn't out-qualified Lando once in 5 races. He's finished out of the points twice and only finished in the points at Baku because of Max's and Lance's bizarre tire failures and Lewis's "Magic button" brake issue (he finished P9). France was a given because of McLaren's out right speed of the car. This has been his only decent race since then and even this race he couldn't pass the Alpha Tauri for half the race (which if he had, he probably wouldn't have been overtaken by Carlos at the end).
