42:25 You say the Sprint didn't overshadow the race but I think you can't ignore the impact the Sprint had on it. The Sprint PROVED to Mercedes that if VER was ahead after lap 2 then HAM was going to be looking at his rear wing for the entire race. Mercedes have been consistently 0.4 to 0.5 secs behind Red Bull in the pit stops so strategy was unlikely to get HAM back past VER. It made it imperative that HAM got past VER on track and within the first 2 laps. It was a contributing factor to Copse.

@alextjb 2 жыл бұрын
I agree, it definitely gave Hamilton more pressure and need to get past on lap 1. Obviously it’s just one of many factors that have been leading up to this all season, but yea I agree… the sprint race def showed that he HAD to go for it. He even did a dummy of the exact same move he did in the sprint race to go down the inside. I also think that while it was more Hamilton’s fault and the 10 second penalty was fair… Max also will become a complete world champion driver when he learns that on occasion it’s best to live to fight another day. Lewis learned that lesson and Max will get there also. But it is part of what makes Max a great driver. He is up 33 points and has a solid grasp on the lead. Even if he finishes second it’s still ok, and he can potentially still fight for the win later.

I honestly felt like that 6 second pit stop for Lando Norris and McLaren played a HUGE factor in Hamilton's win at Silverstone. That was a moment that Norris could have stayed ahead of Bottas and maybe hold off Hamilton a bit longer to give Leclerc enough time to hold the lead
@Lily1127channel
@Lily1127channel 2 жыл бұрын
That and also Sainz's slow pit stop. Sainz's pit stop was incredibly long, even much longer than Lando's. He would have been there ahead of Hamilton after his penalty+pit stop, and probably would have been given the order from Ferrari to hold off Hamilton with any means possible 😀 And the red flag to repair Ham's car. And Leclerc's engine problems. So many factors that played in his favor and against Leclerc.

Hamilton had to overtake Norris anyway though, so I don't think that would have stopped him winning. It would probably just mean Norris would finish 3rd. Not sure about Sainz but if Leclerc is anything to judge by it seemed like the Merc was much quicker on the hard tyre than the Ferrari. Maybe he'd have only been second if he had to pass Sainz too.

People say Max should be less aggressive, however, I can’t remember the last time Max caused a collision while defending rendering the opponent out of the race. Max left more than a car’s width on the inside. Lewis went flat out in a dirty part of the track on a full tank of fuel and understeered into Max. Missed the apex by a mile and yet states Max left him no space. I don’t think Max should have done more, he left more than enough space its hard fair racing and Hamilton messed up.

16:50 i don't really agree on this as almost every time the 'defender' in Copse goes a bit wider than the actual racing line to give more space they lose the position cause they cant make the corner anymore. Also when a overtake happens in Copse where both drivers stay on track(how it should be instead of one having to take the run-off), most of the times the person overtaking is on the outside. When its the other way around and the one overtaking is on the inside, they crash or the defending person is forced off-track. So i agree with Tommy that it was quite a desperate move by Hamilton.

This is why other motorsports have 'pit-lane drive-through penalties' as a form of punishment. Sure, it's harsh... But it's a lot more consistent and if even the threat of it is looming, it will make drivers more wary of their on-track actions.
@Lo33y_
@Lo33y_ 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure about that, because if it was any other driver say Leclerc at the front and that happened then I feel that this whole situation would kind of just blow over, most would say its a racing incident and then move on. Just because it's a driver you're in contention with doesn't mean the penalty should be worse, if it was then that kind of sets a dangerous precedent and we may not get that 2016 thrill.

I do wonder why are you telling that Lewis was pinned by Max, as in fact if you watch the onboard, Ham himself dived into a very tight space and Ver actually turned even more to the left and provided even more space not to say he did the corrections going into the corner while Ham did precisely 0 things and attempts to avoid this situation. Ham was provided 1,25 if not 1,5 car width to make his decision and he was the car behind which has a much better view and understanding of the car placement. "Lewis trying to be a good guy" "very mature" - screams on the radio it was his corner, changes "was ahead" later to "mostly alongside", 0 sorry, barely any responsibility taken, tried a desperate and ugly move which would never stick (also check his responses and body language anytime someone asked him about it, he was ready to explode, was so twitchy) - I'm not sure how this adds up. The problem is that what he did affects the driver and another team after the race into the future races (no matter his result) while it actually does not affect the driver and team at fault AT ALL! Moreover, the penalty in the race should make certain and drivers aware not to try to pull the same stuff again, and what?! He tried that in the race again, a bit better, but still, Lec ran wide of the track while Ham was still close on running a bit wide on the exit, which just summarizes how bad and ugly that move is... It should prevent things from happening and make drivers face the consequences of their bad decisions, otherwise, it just makes no sense, at the current rate and system everyone can just start shoveling everyone off the track and make stupid and desperate dives and surges with very minimal consequences in terms of the penalties.
@NardKoning
@NardKoning 2 жыл бұрын
From a racing point of view, 10 seconds is fair I think (agree most with Driver61s video) because Lewis was wrong, but it was not a stop-go penalty or something. Lewis was sufficiently alongside to be awarded space, there was space there, but he couldn't keep his foot in with dirty tyres, high fuel etc. to make the corner like that. He decided to do so, probably also related to the sprint race before, and understeered Max off. I understand why Lewis does not want to back out (again) at this stage, but for this incident, he didn't use the space that was given in the corner so it's a penalty according to the rules. 10 seconds is fair given the precedent, but of course hugely bitter for Max/RB as it is a meaningless penalty for them.

You cant expect the car on the faster line to go of track because you misjudged your braking point and understeer. It should have been a stop and go for such a dangerous move.

It's funny that you guys are starting to talk about Verstappen needing to take a step back because he is such an "agressive" driver when he is the one that is getting crashed by Lewis. Why is it a problem for people to accept that Hamilton was at fault in this one. It literally says it in the FIA rulebook. And for Hamilton to finish first in that situation just makes me feel a bit angry. He crashes out his title contender and is able to walk away with a racewin. I dont think thats fair by any means. Of course, we have a close title fight by now but it's not supposed to go down this way. If the Merc was that fast on the straigts compared to the Red Bull then why didnt he wait for his move?

I think the biggest frustration with the whole thing is how fortunate Hamilton seems to get. Max should be over the hill and far away but for incidents out of his control. He’s been crucifying Lewis this season. He’s not really put a foot wrong, yet Hamilton who’s made multiple mistakes has dragged himself closer than he has any right to be in this fight. The Imola red flag which allowed Hamilton to get his lap back, the Baku tyre failure, then getting yeeted off the track by Hamilton who’s then able to repair his own car under the red flag that he caused and win the race after receiving a minor penalty. Just doesn’t sit right.

For me, It's hard to live with seven years of dominance (I thought the Ferrari and RBR dominance were long enough already). And then, when the domination seems to end, good luck kicks in. I'm not even a Verstappen fan and I agree. I know that with the current rules this was the proper way to penalise Hamilton but still... it doesn't feel right. Maybe they should give position penalties (+3 positions added post race, so that he is p4 at best even if he finishes the race in p1)? Or WDC point deduction penalties? Instead of X seconds penalties during a race. 5 or 10 seconds penalties are so easily made nothing during a race, especially if you get it so early. I don't know. But some changes could be applied. And I'm not even convinced a red flag was necessary... It's usually just safety car in such situations. There was no car, no debris on track, they just had to remove a car from the barriers and rebuild that barrier, quite far from the tarmac itself. The red flag seemed to serve no other purpose than giving Ham the opportunity to rejoin in p2 instead of last place or a DNF.

But I dont think points should be taken off or move him down the order of finishers, which by the way does the same thing. And like they said in the podcast we see the affects of a 5 second penalty has on most teams. Just because it's a Mercedes or Red Bull doesnt mean they should get worse penalties just because it affects them less. The red flag was necessary and I'm pretty sure it's in the rules, but I may be wrong. If the barriers need to be fixed then yeah red flags. I dont think the 2 penalty points on the licence was fair, it should be more. And btw I am a Hamilton fan and even I found it a bit strange that he was able to win after all that. You do realize "Spain with Rosberg" was way more Rosberg than Lewis. Rosberg completely put Lewis off the track. 2019 Brazil was actually Albon's fault. Albon missed the corner, knew he was going to lose a place and panicked, and drove into Lewis. 2020 Austria was a racing incident at best. Albon had space on the outside and chose to come inside. Lewis was on old tires and did understeer, but there was still room to the outside. The sad thing is, if Albon stayed outside, he almost certainly would have completed the over take in turn 5 as he would have had the inside line for that corner. The incident on Sunday is a racing incident, and if either driver is more to blame it is Max. Just because Max suffered a heavy collision with a tire barrier, doesn't mean it was Lewis's fault. Lewis has no obligation to take a line that will have him touch the inside curb (he wasn't on that curb pretty much all weekend, including in Quali, as it was unsettling the Merc,) his only obligation was to leave space on the outside, which he did. Max, on the other hand, knew Lewis was there on his inside, and still tried to force his way to the inside curb. I still chalk it up as a racing incident.

Throughout the history of F1 “Pole Position” is about who can put together the absolute best lap. Not about who can win a short race. Practice sessions need to be 90 minutes. I think Kimi got a 20 second penalty for the tangle with seb at the very last lap of Austria. The full blame was on kimi for not seeing seb, but this incident, max did leave the required space for a car to go. I don't know, what to make of this, but I am just confused totally.
@NitroGhost124

there's zero excuse for Kimi to not see Seb as he was ahead by considerable margin and turned into him. Max vs Lewis is much more nuanced. I would like to see an analysis of where Hamilton would have apexed (if at all) had his trajectory not been altered from the impact. he may have missed the apex but it might have not been all that much which would mean a minor mistake. Verstappen also made the mistake of turning in the way he did and probably thought he would have been clear of Hamilton (hence the rear touching Hamilton's front). two minor infractions that caused a big incident. the penalty for me probably comes down to the fact that maybe Hamilton shouldn't have pushed aggressively in the first place to end up in the position that they were in and probably should have backed out a bit earlier so the blame is put more on Hamilton. it's definitely not 100% blame on Hamilton, both made mistakes and both decided not to back out

For me it’s a racing incident. First of all, going into the corner they are side by side, Max is trying to keep first place so brakes later and to wide. To try and keep 1st he comes in too early straight into the path of Lewis who can not really do much. What do you expect him to do brake in the middle of the corner and let Max through. Christians Horners comments after the race about Hamilton should have backed out are wrong as Max should also realise where they are in the track so he should have backed out and ‘bided’ his time. They are both experienced drivers and should know where the limit is as well. No racing driver will ever break in the middle of a corner when they are on a good line. Max was going wide and from Hamilton’s point of view he cannot do anything there.

When you are not in the Lewis camp it kind of looked 'off'. I understand him being glad or relieved he got the win, but man it was more luck then anything. 1- crashing into opponent and ending his race because of your misjudgment while his car being relatively intact. 2- being able to fix the car under red flag 3- engine problems for driver in front of you (Lecler) 4- Botas getting ordered to let him pass.

I'm 100% with Alonso on this one, Hamilton couldn't just disappear. Either way, I think people who put this anywhere close to Senna or Schumacher, and think for a second Hamilton was planning a 300 k/h crash expecting his car to survive and Verstappen to quit, are giving way too much credit to Hamilton and should probably check their medication.

I STRONGLY dislike (not hate) Hamilton and I still don't think he did it on purpose. I think it was a racing incident. I don't thing Lewis deserved a penalty at all really. I feel like the penalty was more based on the fact that these were the 2 championship fighters than anything. If this would have happened between any 2 other drivers I think it would have been investigated, and been a racing incident. Also, I think it's less of a mistake by Lewis, and more of a mental game between the two drivers. Max is known for being aggressive and saying "I'm going here, you can either give me room or we can both crash". Lewis has always given room to avoid a crash, but I think that now he's adopting the same ruthless mindset. In this case Max lost out, but these things can go any of 3 ways really.
