I think the answer to points is pretty easy. Just do it as a waterfall. You do 75-100% full points. 50 - 74% 3/4 points 25-49% 1/2 points 0-24% 1/4 points That seems simple and resolves any issues of a super short race

I stand by the half points. Qualifying matters and has a huge impact on any race. Even if a race couldn’t go ahead at all I’d argue that half points for qualifying is fair since they’ve done ‘half’ the job qualifying. Totally against them using this to justify not refunding though
@jamiesumner3070
@jamiesumner3070 2 жыл бұрын
That's the issue the only reason f1 did the 2 laps and called it a race is because they didnt want to refund the fans who attended. They only awarded half points for this reason, not for propper purposes. Its extremely poor with how f1 have treated those fans in the end.
@acracing6205

Half points should be awarded for completing half the race
@Excludos
@Excludos 2 жыл бұрын
Please stop spreading this myth. They wouldn't have refunded the tickets anyhow. The T&C made that very clear. Not to mention that is the venue's problem, not F1. The two "farce" laps around was just to reward points based on qualifying, which I, like you, think is reasonable (honestly I'd rather see the rules changed to solidify that qualy would reward half points if the race was cancelled, without having to do 2 laps behind safety car)
@jamiesumner3070
@jamiesumner3070 2 жыл бұрын
@@Excludos apart from it was clearly done to stop f1 having to payout for not having the event, Masi said as much on team radio when they did the 2 laps behind safety car. Hamilton, Vetel and Alonso have also confirmed this with how they reacted to the situation. Only 3 drivers who had the balls to speak out on the subject. They rewarded half points, purely for the reason of being able to label it a "race and "event fullfilled" for the business side of things and legal obligations.

I was following a really good weather forecast and there was a window of 0 rain 18:10-18:50 as late as 17:45, the race directors saw the same and that's why they were postponing it. Unfortunately the window disappeared literally as they started anouncing the race will take place.

The scary thing is that if Lando hadn’t crashed yesterday then they probably would’ve have gone racing regardless of what the drivers were saying. I think that Lando’s crash alerted the FIA to the possible risks of racing in those conditions and made them realise that they couldn’t safely allow those cars to race in conditions like that.

I don’t know how this myth about “extraordinary conditions” has started, but NO those were NOT extraordinary conditions. That was pretty normal rain. If F1 has decided that from now on they can not take that kind of rain, they shoudl never come to Spa again. Because the chance of getting similar or even heavier rain is like - what? 20%?
@adityakhaprelap
@adityakhaprelap 2 жыл бұрын
@@arekkusu888 bruh are you for real? Did you see how much water the cars were spraying back? Onboard cameras couldn't even see the red light from the car in front. Other Motorsport events are slower and their cars are much more forgiving to the weather. If they had decided to race yesterday and someone had crashed in eau rouge no one would even know until the red flag dropped with a huge pile up of cars and someone in the hospital fighting for death. Hindsight is always 20/20. And if the Circuit refunded all the money, we won't even see Spa on the calendar next year!

I was there too, it was actually my first gp.. we left at 4am and luckily still managed to get in at 10, but everything turned so ridiculously muddy. I felt like race control really tried to keep us there as long as possible for "an expectional sprint race like never seen before" that they knew wasn't going to happen. In the crowd we all kept on checking the conditions and knew with every delay and the restart it wouldn't take long before they'd red flag it. And ofcourse for driver safety it was crucial to call it quits because we too in the crowd could see the amount of spray was just insane, but they acted as if the whole sky came crashing down with rain while the whole day it was just drizzling most of the time. Ofcourse after hours upon hours this turns to huge puddles, but with the f3 race in the morning and im not 100% sure but with porsche too, they did like 4-5 formation laps to get the track dry and I don't get how they didn't even opt to do that. I wasn't happy with the fact they still handed points out, because it didn't do justice for me and all the fans who attended because we never got to see and actual lap. When you do not hear Spa cheering for Max anymore, you know the day was a total mess. Me and my friends were all Max fans, but honestly at the end of the day we were only happy Russell got his first podium. I'm pretty sure Max and Lewis do not feel like this podium does justice for the day. Very very sad this is how it turned out for my first gp, you just don't wish this to anybody. In short: the crowd kept cheering when the safety car came by as we saw it more often than the drivers self.

I’m going to defend the FIA here: Katy, Matt, Tommy-the FIA know the rules; it’s how the rules are applied to factual scenarios that becomes the complication. The regulations are a sort of law, which has significant consequences if misinterpreted and misapplied. What your saw on Sunday was the FIA making sure their application of the rules was correct (re Perez) by checking with the stewards. In the relation to “ignoring the rules”, the FIA has the power to stop the time limit force majeure. It’s literally in the regs. Interpretation of the regs and application to the facts is a fine skill, and my head explodes when “arm chair experts” think they know better than the people who have the responsibility to keep the drivers and fans safe and adjudicate the sport.

I'm still wondering about the tires, haven't found any reactions or feedback on them. I mean the green vs the blue ones, in Q particularly. How come a soaking wet track works with green inters, and does not work with blue ones .. add more rain and all of a sudden, no tire works at all and Lando is in the wall, rightly so, trowing his not-working-blue-tires all over the place. Is there a fundamental problem with the current blue tires ? What situation WOULD work and be good for them then ??
@jakecowley5726
@jakecowley5726 2 жыл бұрын
Martin Brundle explained in the sky sports commentary that it's something to do with the temps. The wets heat up much faster than the inters which is why a lot of them were on the inters rather than wets, the inters are also the faster and more preferable tyre, so if they can go with the inters they will. The wets shift more water than the inters but heat up faster and are slower in terms of pace. However, the problem wasn't so much the tyres but the sheer amount of rain causing the cars to aquaplane, which is less to do with the tyres and more to do with the mass of the cars, being lighter they aquaplane easier and tyre choice only helps so far.

Probably an unpopular opinion but I`ll post it anyway: In my opinion the FIA made the right choice. And I don`t think there would have been really any other viable option. It was far too dangerous to so racing on this day would never have been an option. Of course they could have just cancelled the race but I dont think that would have been fair for all the teams who put in an great effort to have to go home with no reward. So they did the right thing drove those two laps and awarded half points. The only other option I could have imagined was racing on Monday but that would have been almost impossible to accomplish due to the next race already being this weekend and monday being a normal working day in Belgium. Plus a lot of team members already had plans for that monday so not everyone would have been available anyway. Had I been in the same situation and had i been given the same options I‘d have done the same. Of course it‘s sad for the fans on track and in front of the TV but nobody can control the weather. And now i prepare myself for the biggest shitstorm ever

What is the purpose of the full wet tyre? When you can use them there is so much spray, that the visibility is so bad that you can't race and you drive behind the safety car or red flag the race. When the visibility is better and you can race, the full wet is much slower than the inter.

For the decision about delaying the clock at one hour to go until they eventually gave up, that's not part of the F1 regs, but part of the FIA's sporting code that applies to all FIA series, not just F1. It includes things like entry requirements (for drivers, teams and even the racing series themselves), circuit requirements and approval, and universal safety requirements.

You make a good point Tommy about changing the timing of the race. I was at the 2018 MotoGP Grand Prix at Silverstone which was a washout. FIM and Dorna tried to have the race earlier and push the Moto 2 race to later, as the forecast showed it would rain most of the afternoon. Stuck in the stands in the rain for hours waiting, the race got cancelled after several hours. We did get a refund. I had a weekend ticket but my refund was for a small portion of what would have been the percentage of the Sunday’s ticket.

It never should of got to that point. Seb was right that should of been red flagged before that. Lando may think it was his error but the reality is that session should of been red flagged . He walked away from that which frankly was the only result that was important this past weekend.

For me it's Masi's fault because Q3 should be red flagged in the first place. Yes it is Lando's fault now because the mistake but Masi's should call the Red Flag before and Lando probably on the front row. Also it's like they ignored the performance that Lando did on Q1 and Q2, that's why I'm sad that he's got rated D

Had a chat with my dad (who always gives me good alternate viewpoints to what I see on Twitter and comment sections) while talking about what should be done to Eau Rouge-Raidillon. I mentioned the two schools of thought, which are obviously change up Eau Rouge (which he said isn't possible, with how the water flows right underneath the section, and also the fact that the floods they had at the track recently that caused the mudslides had it flooded from La Source all the way to the top of Raidillon), and then the extension of the crash barriers to stop flinging the cars back onto the track. So, he mentioned the grass on the inside of the corners, and suggested making it a straight, keeping the elevation, which is what he love about Eau Rouge-Raidillon, but eliminating the lateral forces on the car that the current corner gives, which is what generally causes all the recent crashes we've seen. It keeps the feeling of Eau Rouge alive, and would help eliminate more crashes. You can still extend the barriers and run off, but, not to the extent you would have to if you left Eau Rouge-Raidillon as it is. Thoughts?

Possible way to communicate schedule change: have the track or the event (whoever actually distributes the tickets) email everyone who purchased a ticket the night before. Everyone gets a confirmation email after the ticket is purchased, so it should be pretty easy to send out another email to notify everyone that the schedule has been updated.

You giving him too much credit. He just didn’t have that many cameras and microphones on him. And there was no social media. He let a race start in Spa in 1998, and half the field crashed out. He was in charge when the teams couldn’t agree to a tire solution and you had that Indy 2005 debacle. There is plenty more. Imola 2004 we almost lost 3 drivers that day. 2 is waaaay to much. Also having literally millions of people yell at you via social media, and all this exposés on safety. Makes you red flag a race at any accident these days. Is Massie doing a great job? I honestly don’t know. I couldn’t do it, but seeing a poorly written vague rule book, race debacles isn’t a new thing since Whiting left us.

As a McLaren fan I am glad we managed to reovertake Ferrari in the constructors standings but it shouldn’t have happened. It is a disgrace to the sport that they sent the drivers out to do two laps to classify it as a “race” and even contemplated awarding half points for not a single lap of racing is completely farcical. The FIA need to fix these rules NOW and not keep changing rules on the spot in order to excuse charging these fans for watching this “race”. Sorry for the rant

The issue this weekend wasn't aquaplaning, so more extreme tires wouldn't have helped. The main issue is that the cars pull the water upwards with their aero, so there is no visibility no matter the tires. I don't think there is a solution for this sort of weather. It's just not possible to race these cars, when there is enough water to completely kill visibilty... (monaco (or other low speed tracks) might have been able to go ahead in conditions such as these, since speeds are much lower, therefore the needed visibility is lower and the water doesn't get thrown up quite as badly at lower speeds)

On q 4, the tires do push the water outward, the aero creates a sudden drop in pressure behind the car and that is what sucks the water back in. You can actually see it spraying upward behind the defuser.

Purely academic questions: 1. If the race had resumed and the time limit had not been an issue, how long should the race have been? 43 laps (-1 for the double formation lap) or 39 (that plus -1 for each "delayed start" message that were sent out before 15:30)? 2. Had someone in the top 10 set the fastest lap behind the safety car, should he have been awarded half a point for that?

The events and non-events of Sunday’s “race” were unfortunate, but shit happens. Pretty much all sports occasionally have to post-pone or cancel games/ matches/ events due to weather and other circumstances. It sucks, but there is no way to plan and prepare for every single eventuality.

It was a joke. Not only the conditions were atrocious for us fans out there, but because FiA stopped the clocked and dragged it for so long, only meant that we all lost our train connections, had to make alternate plans for accommodations and on top of that we all are going to fall sick. It definitely wasn’t safe for the race to go ahead but that two laps behind safety car was for one and one reason only. The intention of F1 was not to conduct a race but to find some loopholes to not pay us back which pissed me off. If drivers were awarded half the points, we too deserve half of our money back. Look guys, I love F1 but to be honest I am really struggling cause I know it won’t be the same anymore for all of us who were out there.
