Not that it really matters but the binding in traditional 4wd systems occurs because the front and rear are locked together, not due to the left/right being locked together. Definitely would like to see more auto 4wd on pickups though, sometimes even rain is enough to get the rear tires to light up without any weight in the bed. One of my favorite features of my limited 4Runner is the full time 4WD with a 2 speed transfer case.

One thing I noticed that GM should review, the rear arms and axle are too low for a off road ride, Other than that I think GM starting to take the right path. The Middle East is a big market for cars and specially for SUVs and Trucks. General Motors SUVs and Trucks used to be a fierce competitor with Toyota between 1970s and the beginning of 2000s in the Middle East. I'm here in Feb. 2024... have an old (2012) Yukon SLT 4WD that doesn't have low range but does have an AUTO selection which I've found to be excellent for just about anything. Usually in my commute I just keep it in 2WD but with any inclement weather AUTO is great as it is for light off-roading/camping. For winter months I switch out my 22" rims/tires for a set of 17s I picked up on the cheap with AT/all-weather snow rated tires. But really, they do everything they can to cut cost out of their parts, replacing mechanical lockers with electronic imposters, outsourcing to foreign suppliers, and the thing that suffers is performance, quality, capability, reliability and longevity. The new IRS will take away some of its off road ability that the former solid rear axle was capable of, but I don't think anyone buys a Tahoe to do any serious off roading anyway. i wish they had tested the Z71 as well, the AT tires on Z71 would have been better in this scenario.

Seems the trucks/ SUV's "Auto 4WD" is now going to a clutch style transfer case. I consider that a Heavy Duty AWD system since there are more disc/ plates to give a harder grab vs something like a Subaru's transfer clutch system. Considering today's buyers, the most those two SUVs will see is a Dirt road. If it was anything like the Toyota Sequoia, it'd be a decent system. That runs a torsen center differential, which is lockable & you and run RWD only if you choose to.

The clutch-based full-time 4WD systems have been around for years and haven proven to be reliable and stout. The Magna MP3200-series transfer cases used in GM vehicles is the same system Jeep has used in the no-2WD-mode-available Jeep Grand Cherokee for years. The only caveat with these systems is using Auto 4WD in the sand where there's constant slippage, it will lead to an overtemp condition in the t-case and the computer will disable 4WD and then you're stuck. Running in 4H or 4L instead of 4Auto will prevent that from happening since the clutch ends up fully locked with no slippage. That said, if anyone is unlucky enough to own a Ram 1500 with the BW 44-44 transfer case just plan on not using it off-road very often as even in 4L there have been problems with it not fully locking and also when you turn the engine off it actually disengages the clutch and you'll be in 2WD, even in 4L. The Magna transfer cases stay mechanically fully locked in 4H and 4L so this isn't a problem.

To add to my comment below about the lack of reliability with General Motors and American cars in general, have you ever thought about doing a video that gives an explanation of why American brands are so unreliable compared to Asian counterparts? Your videos are exceptional and very detailed and I am seeing this type of video here and there on automotive review channels that explain this phenomenon.
@mripple3 жыл бұрын
I feel this is a misnomer. My last Asian car was a Mazda Rx-8 with a rotary engine. While it was a super fun car to drive, there were massive reliability issues with the engine not to mention the horrible gas mileage. I am now on my 4th Chevy vehicle since then with over 300,000 miles combined. I have not had a single major issue with any of them. While there can be issues with any vehicle, if you look at the latest automotive reliability surveys, GM actually does quite well.
@NormandyFoye3 жыл бұрын
@@mripple I agree the rotary engine was bad and discontinued for a reason, but that’s only 1 example from an otherwise superior manufacturer of reliable automobiles. And I’m always surprised to see Chevy trucks with Toyota-like high mileage, but I suspect their owners were meticulous with maintenance and probably didn’t “abuse” them beyond intended design. And many of those exceptions were fleet-maintained vehicles as well. I hope GM can maintain the type of upward trajectory that Asian manufacturers have maintained for many years. Unfortunately, it’s very long history of poor management and engineering mean it’s going to take some serious changes become a serious competitor in the market. The math doesn’t care either way.

Not to be ignorant, but the option for messaging seats for driver and passenger are available on the Tahoe.

Why is there not a clear distinction between lane "nudging" and lane "centering"? I agree there can be a huge difference in how these features behave.. one is almost like auto pilot and the other is far from it.

I rented a Chevy Colorado, I believe that had 4 hi (no 4 low) and auto. Like this truck the tires were horrible. I tried the 4 auto when we had 4-6" of snow. I didn't like it at all. Between the engagement, turning, and available traction , it was horrible. I was always a leave it in 2wd until available traction has been defeated, kind of cat. Then, and only then do you swap into 4 wdh. So, I'll probably never use 4wd auto. I'll use 2wd until I need 4wdh. /And then use that until I need 4wdl. I hope everyone is content.

The Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, and the Cadillac Escalade account for 50% of all large SUV sales in the US. GM makes 340,000 of them every year and exports about 80,000 to 31 countries. They’re made in GM’s plant in Arlington, Texas, which is said to be the most profitable assembly plant in the world. We estimate they generate $20 billion in revenue for GM and about $4 billion in profits. Autoline Daily.

I noticed in 4-Low in the Tahoe that traction control turned off. I assume this is why the Tahoe had a more difficult time in 4Low. This is similar to Toyota where you loose Trac when in 4 Low. On TRD vehicles, there is ATrac which is available in 4low.

The traction control behaviour is about what I would expect. 4Auto is nothing special, it just controls the coupling in the transfer case that sends power to the front axle, nothing more. Most of these programs for 4Auto are pretty sophisticated and would be acting as if in 4hi in a situation like that. The reason it looked worse in 4lo is that it turned off traction control it seems.

I think the reason for the Lsd now responsing quickly in 4L is because it turns off the traction , i am not sure if its the main the reason but i think its reason in the middle east the tahoe z71 comes standard with the ELSD like the yukon instead of the MLSD , i tried it in the desert it was okay i mean it did its job , but i kinda wish it had a locker which could have been much easier instead of waiting for the car to spin awhile

The dash on the Yukon Denali is totally different from Chevy shifter is different and you explained auto 4WD totally wrong. Basically it's Rear wheel drive with the front clutches engaged once rear slip is detected the front wheels are engaged. Best visual is coasting a car downhill in first gear and the clutch in let go of the clutch and the wheels will slow the car down

Great review Ryan, and great camera placement! Also a question: as far as I know, in Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra you cannot have the "off-road mode" in 4Lo (I think only normal mode is available in 4Lo), is that also true for the Tahoe as well?
@drivingsports3 жыл бұрын
GMC told us the e-diff acts like a locker specifically in 4Low on this vehicle. We didn’t ask Chevy. (Based on our experience, their PR person would take two weeks to get back to us and then have an unspecific answer.)

I don't know how many of you car guys that I have had to tell this, but Chevrolet does not have an LSD rear differential it is a g80 eaton locking differential!!!!
@drivingsports3 жыл бұрын
The documentation for the vehicle specifically states “mechanical limited slip differential.” Not saying you’re wrong, but we say LSD because that’s what Chevy tells us... and I sure didn’t see any locking action.
@smudge16193 жыл бұрын
No. You are 100% wrong and are misleading people with your constant stating the 2021 Tahoe/GMC has a Eaton Locker. OLDER ones did, but not the new generation. It is NOT A G80 it is a Limited Slip Differential made NEW by American Axle. It is completely new and not an Eaton Locker. It is important you realize this and stop propagating incorrect info which may incorrectly influence a buyer. www.aam.com/media/story/aam-supplies-new-independent-rear-drive-axles-for-gm-full-size-suvs www.motortrend.com/news/2021-chevrolet-tahoe-and-suburban-7-t1-tech-highlights/
