I've had 4 trucks with the 5.3 and they've always done what I needed them to do. I'm sure the 6.2 is more powerful but it's more expensive, requires up level trim which is also more money and requires premium fuel which is More expensive. So unless you "need" the extra power then I'd say the 5.3 is a better choice.

Thanks for the video. The design of the hoods also impacts fuel economy. The Silverado has more aerodynamic forward sloping hood while the Sierra's hood looks like a big block. Wind resistance would be greater on the Sierra and probably lead to worse fuel economy. My dad has a 19 Silverado with the new design and 5.3. When we took the Silverado and Sierra out for test drives, you definitely felt more wind resistance in the Sierra. They both had the 5.3. Our GM dealer also told us that in their internal testing, the Silverado consistently got better fuel economy. Overall, the 5.3 is a good reliable engine. I have one in my 2010 Sierra....after 135 000 km....no issues. It's definitely not a performance engine but I'm happy with it. In my dad's 2019, the truck and motor seem more responsive. I would love to one day try out the 6.2 but it's way out of my price range. Always wished GM would have turned their 4.3 V6 into a twin turbo like the Ford ecoboost. That would interesting to see.

@@703Speed Yes currently driving a 21 1500 Sierra AT4 but only for a cpl more days. Trading it in on a new 2500 AT4 with the 6.6 gas engine because the 6.2 is struggling towing my 6,500lb cargo trailer. The brakes can't handle the weight either and the transmission is getting pretty hot at 189 degrees on level ground. But my 1500 only has the 10spd trans and a 3.23 gear ratio which is the main problem. Trans get really hot if I reverse the trailer too. 1500 trucks really only like pulling around 5,500lbs on a daily basis. Any more than that you need a 2500.
@703Speed
@703Speed 2 жыл бұрын
@@richr909 ah okay, that makes sense. Can you get the 6.2 10 speed with a 3.73? And how much of a difference would that make when pulling 6,500 lbs? Also - I have a video review of a 2022 AT4 with the 6.6 Gas motor if you’d like to check it out! Regardless, good luck with your new truck! Both the 1500 and 2500 AT4 are really sharp looking trucks.
@richr909
@richr909 2 жыл бұрын
@@703Speed If they made a 6.2 with a 10spd trans and a 3.73 gear there would be no reason for anyone to buy the 2500's other than the bed payload difference, which could easily be fixed with a set of rear airbags and the brakes. 2500's have far superior braking force and brake pad life. The 6.2 with 3.73 axle would be the perfect truck and would still get great fuel economy because of the 10spd trans. But for some stupid reason they keep building the 1500's with only a 3.23 and a 3.42 axle ratio. You can't even get the 3.42 axle right now because of the chip shortages from when the Democrats burnt down the chip factory.
@703Speed
@703Speed 2 жыл бұрын
@@richr909 I totally agree, the 6.2 10 speed 3.73 would be perfect. But that is a great point, it would definitely have an affect on the 2500’s. I feel like the chip shortage thing is kinda all BS now, and the powers that be are using the shortage in their favor to manipulate the market and cause a false sense of fear in order to make everything more expensive.

Owners manual on the 6.2 says to use the premium gas whereas the 5.3 doesn't require/recommend it. Sure, these trucks are expensive but filling that big tank with gas on a routine basis is a concern and with premium fuels being so highly priced now, it has to be a factor to consider. If only on that factor, we opted for the 5.3 and its ability to comfortably run the "standard" gas.

Ok so we have the 5.3 that can optimally run 87 octane, then we have a 6.2 that is recommended to otimally run 93 octane. Now while you don't have to run 93 in the 6.2 you can run 87 but performance and mileage drops! So we really need to calculate fuel costs and MPG also! Or is someone going to tell me you get the same MPG in the 6.2 on 87 pinging down the road, versus running the recommended 93!?! I figure 15-20 more bucks a fill up on a 6.2. Thoughts?
@thelank5892
@thelank5892 2 ай бұрын
I do run 87 no noticeable drop in mileage from my past 18 5.3. I run 93 if I tow more then 4-5k lbs. don't really ping at all on either fuel, just the normal Chevy ticks
@PitStopSports
@PitStopSports Ай бұрын
The actual difference in running 87 vs 93 in the 6.2 has to do with pre ignition at compression, (when using 87) causing more carbon residue buildup. There is little to no difference in actual vehicle performance due to the octane difference.

SOOOOOOOOOOOO these are NOT the same trucks. I have a 2021 Denali 6.2 w/ 10sp trans (420hp/460tq) and I tow my boat which is heavy overloaded for a week of camping from San Diego to Lake Havasu Az and have a friend john has with a 2019 Chevrolet 5.3 w/8sp (355hp/385tq) towing his heavy overloaded at the same time every year. There is a lot more to these trucks than 0-60 and HP, I can just effortlessly cruise at 55 not pushing it with my 6.2 pulling my boat, and John's 5.3 has to be placed in manual mode and has to work a lot harder just on the flats. Halfway to AZ we stop and top off our trucks and every time John's truck takes 3-5 gallons more fuel than mine. During the summer temps can reach close to 120 degrees across the desert. John's 5.3 is almost overheating with water temp at 220 and 230 on the oil temp on the flats and even higher if he pushes it on grades and sometimes he shuts off the A/c to help keep it from overheating. My Denali with a 6.2 in drive runs normal water and oil temps the whole trip. On any grade at all the 5.3 has to really work (dropping lower gears) and the 6.2 is just cruising in auto and we are only pulling at 55-60. John said this year his transmission started to shift strangely this year. I drove John's truck halfway last year these are not the same trucks at all. John just this week bought a new 2021 GMC AT4 with a 6.2. So if you're just using your truck around town like a car get the 5.3. If you tow anything get the 6.2 you get better mileage and cruise effortlessly doing it.

Thank you for the reply! I definitely would've liked to do a video with a 5.3 10 speed vs a 6.2 10 speed, but due to vehicle shortages, I didn't really have another option. I could definitely see how much more effortless it would be to tow with the 6.2. No questions. I am kinda surprised though that the 5.3 struggled so much. How heavy was the boat he was pulling? I appreciate you writing this up as it gives the viewers an owners' perspective of both motors put to the test. But, for the people who don't tow, or tow lightly when they do, the 5.3 is a great option for them. Thank you again for your insight!

Had an 08 with a 6.2 that shit out after 270k miles the other day. I’m almost out of college for engineering and will be getting a 21 model truck in the coming weeks before spring semester and I’ll probably end up in a 5.3. While the 6.2 is nice for vehicle get up and go, I was shocked to find out the 5.3’s tow more in the standard axle ratio. Had to look into it more, and found it interesting the 6.2 has 100lb less in towing but 100lb more in GCWR since it’s 200lbs heavier. So GM basically up-charges you for the more “powerful” powertrain, except it’s actually worse unless you spec the truck with a proper axle ratio.

I just purchased a new 2022 Sierra Denali 5.3L. I went with the 5.3L for mpg , cost & honestly was not a huge difference vs the 6.2L. Keep in mind some 5.3L & 6.2L will have dynamic fuel management, you have the DFM noise issue alot of owners complain about & I feel can lag & sacrifice power sometimes since DFM will reduce cylinders by the gas / acceleration you are giving it & it can miss fire & give you issues down the line as well. The 5.3L vs 6.2L= 65hp / 77Torque difference between the two. The 5.3L daily driving is best will save you more by using 87 octane while still having nice sound & power. 6.2L if you have another vehicle, plan on adding bigger wheels, and have extra cash for extra option / gas or just want to show and have fun. Good luck! 👍🏻
