*Fuel Quality / Octane Update* The owner's manual for the 2021 Mustang EcoBoost/GT shows 87 octane as minimum recommended. There's a supplement that shows 91 Octane recommended but after digging a bit more that's on the Shelby 500. So the question is, do you need to use a premium fuel? If you've got an EcoBoost/GT/Mach-1.. technically no. But should you? Horsepower/torque specs for all vehicles are based on using a premium 91 octane fuel and you'll absolutely notice a change in performance if you use the higher quality fuel instead. Ford recommends the higher quality fuel for best overall performance, especially in warmer weather. Huge shoutout for Nick for bringing the octane rating to my attention - kzbin.info

Very informative video! Those tires are a downgrade from the michelin pilot sport offered before. I think the PP makes the ride a bit bouncy over our not-so-good-anymore-roads. I wish they listen to their customers and provide the tremec gearbox for all mustangs instead of crappy getrag (but if they hear customers, they wouldn't provide such large gaps on panels throughout the car). Camaro and challengers use tremec, SO much better than the available on the Mustang. Mach1 is the only non-shelby mustang with tremec, but it is too expensive.
@CarsWithSteve3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Pedro! I found that when you add Magneride in it makes a pretty big difference in the overall handling. Agree 100% that the tremec should be standard across the Mustang lineup. It seems like people aren't having the same issues on the getrag D4 as they were on the getrag from the 2011 - 2017 but it is a better driving experience with the tremec!

@CarsWithSteve Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's technically 87 minimum octane. Most Mustang owners I know use 89/91 and love the way it drives in comparison. For the few extra hp/lb-ft of torque it can be hard to justify gas that's 10%+ more expensive

Pretty much every one yeah. All Ford vehicles NA or not have HP/torque ratings based on 93
@jasondearman37432 жыл бұрын
Point was that 87 will not hurt the car. You wont get 460HP but the knock sensors will retard the timing enough to avoid damage to internals. BMW for example can run on 89 despite being turbocharged and will not hurt longebity either. Was told that by a BMW engineer directly.

@@jasondearman3743 figured you meant there wouldn't be any damage using the 87. But the kicker is the Mustang owners manual also points out that the engine may knock lightly with recommended (87) octane. I've heard knocking in GTs running 87 but it went away after a cycle of 89 ran through the car

@carswithsteve any idea if we need the 4g wifi hotspot to do these updates? Buying a 2023 (new) and it's been removed due to semiconductor shortage. What kind of updates would it be doing anyway? @CarsWithSteve Жыл бұрын
Correct about the 4G for hotspot only. You just need to connect over wifi at home and then schedule the updates. It's usually firmware/security and they're fairly sporadic. If you're planning on driving it in the winter where you'll get some snow then adding winter tires and a few bags of salt in the trunk are a good idea. I had a 2013 gt premium and They told me it uses 87 octane. I was using the supreme gasoline 93 octane and it developed a horrible smell. I ended up just trading it in. Higher octane was not for this car. The service people at Ford said that’s what was causing that smell. Now you say it uses that octane?? Ugh. I never been able to get a straight answer about the fuel this uses. The only reason I was putting the higher octane was because I heard about it online that it needed it. Ford people said otherwise. Buyer beware. I was thinking about getting these newer mustangs with V8 again but looks like there is still misinformation about what gas to use. Never-mind! I will just get an EV
@CarsWithSteve3 жыл бұрын
Fuel in the Mustang is an interesting argument. Minimum manufacturers recommendation is just 87 but all their horsepower/torque dynos are achieved using a premium fuel. In the 2013 owner's manual it has the same 87 min recommendation and a premium fuel is recommended for "duty usage". There have been a number of Mustang owners who have commented online and owners in local clubs that have said they use nothing but premium without issue EV may be the way to go - even for distance trips you can route based on charger locations.
